Flux flow and orbital upper critical field in multiband FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ explored by microwave magnetotransport

We measure the flux flow resistivity in FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ epitaxial films using a microwave dual-frequency technique (16 GHz and 27 GHz), in the range 5 K-$T_c$, in static magnetic fields up to 1.2 T. By applying a temperature scaling procedure, we extract from flux flow measurements the temperature dependence of the orbital upper critical field, that shows features of multiband superconductors. The reduced orbital upper critical field is then fitted with a two-band model with strong intraband and weak interband coupling, as expected in 11 Fe-based systems. We derive the vortex viscosity and we estimate the bands-averaged vortex core quasiparticle reduced scattering time within the Bardeen-Stephen framework. Our data suggest that, for our epitaxial FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ films, the quasiparticle scattering rate values are at the upper edge for the dirty regime. Finally, tentative numerical values of the orbital upper critical field and coherence length are provided.

Most stringent bound on electron neutrino mass obtained with a scalable low temperature microcalorimeter array

The determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale remains a fundamental open question in particle physics, with profound implications for both the Standard Model and cosmology. Direct kinematic measurements, independent of model-dependent assumptions, provide the most robust approach to address this challenge. In this Letter, we present the most stringent upper bound on the effective electron neutrino mass ever obtained with a calorimetric measurement of the electron capture decay of $^{163}$Ho. The HOLMES experiment employs an array of ion-implanted transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters, achieving an average energy resolution of 6 eV FWHM with a scalable, multiplexed readout technique. With a total of $7\times10^7$ decay events recorded over two months and a Bayesian statistical analysis, we derive an upper limit of $m_{\beta}<27$ eV/c$^2$ at 90% credibility. These results validate the feasibility of $^{163}$Ho calorimetry for next-generation neutrino mass experiments and demonstrate the potential of a scalable TES-based microcalorimetric technique to push the sensitivity of direct neutrino mass measurements beyond the current state of the art.

Evidence of Nodal Line in the Superconducting Gap Symmetry of Noncentrosymmetric ThCoC$_{2}$

The newly discovered noncentrosymmetric superconductor ThCoC$_{2}$ exhibits numerous unconventional behavior in the field dependent heat capacity data. Here we present the first measurement of the gap symmetry of ThCoC$_{2}$ by muon spin rotation/relaxation $(μ$SR) measurements. Temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth measured using the transverse field $μ$SR measurement reveal the evidence of nodal pairing symmetry. To understand these findings, we carry out the calculations of superconducting pairing eigenvalue and eigenfunction symmetry due to the spin-fluctuation mechanism, by directly implemented the {\it ab-initio} band structures. We find that the system possesses a single Fermi surface with considerable three-dimensionality, and hence a strong nesting along the $k_z$-direction. Such a nesting promotes a superconducting pairing with a $\cos{k_z}$-like symmetry with a prominent nodal line on the $k_z=\pmπ/2$ plane. The result agrees well with the experimental data.

Observation of pseudogap in MgB2

Pseudogap phase in superconductors continues to be an outstanding puzzle that differentiates unconventional superconductors from the conventional ones (BCS-superconductors). Employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy on a highly dense conventional superconductor, MgB2, we discover an interesting scenario. While the spectral evolution close to the Fermi energy is commensurate to BCS descriptions as expected, the spectra in the wider energy range reveal emergence of a pseudogap much above the superconducting transition temperature indicating apparent departure from the BCS scenario. The energy scale of the pseudogap is comparable to the energy of E2g phonon mode responsible for superconductivity in MgB2 and the pseudogap can be attributed to the effect of electron-phonon coupling on the electronic structure. These results reveal a scenario of the emergence of the superconducting gap within an electron-phonon coupling induced pseudogap.

Experimental Evidences for Static Charge Density Waves in Iron Oxy-pnictides

In this Letter we report high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscope analysis of Mn-substituted LaFeAsO samples, demonstrating that a static incommensurate modulated structure develops across the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, whose modulation wave-vector depends on the Mn content. The incommensurate structural distortion is likely originating from a charge-density-wave instability, a periodic modulation of the density of conduction electrons associated with a modulation of the atomic positions. Our results add a new component in the physics of Fe-based superconductors, indicating that the density wave ordering is charge-driven.

Exploring the feasibility of Fe(Se,Te) conductors by ex-situ Powder-in-Tube method

In this work, the feasibility condition of Powder-In-Tube (PIT) processed wires of Fe(Se,Te) superconductor has been investigated. We faced several technical issues that are extensively described and discussed. In particular, we tested different metals and alloys as external sheaths (Cu, Ag, Nb, Ta, Ni, Fe, cupronickel, brass) concluding that the only sheath that does not affect substantially the Fe(Se,Te) phase is Fe. On the other hand, Fe sheath introduces excess iron in the Fe(Se,Te) phase, which affects the superconducting properties; we investigated the effects of the thermal treatments and of the powder composition in order to avoid it. The maximum Jc value obtained in our samples is 4*10^2 A/cm2, comparable to other published values of PIT conductors of the 11 family. We conclude that the fabrication of Fe(Se,Te) wires by PIT method is quite challenging and other approaches should be developed.

Magneto Seebeck effect in REFeAsO (RE=rare earth) compounds: probing the magnon drag scenario

We investigate Seebeck effect in REFeAsO (RE=rare earth)compounds as a function of temperature and magnetic field up to 30T. The Seebeck curves are characterized by a broad negative bump around 50K, which is sample dependent and strongly enhanced by the application of a magnetic field. A model for the temperature and field dependence of the magnon drag contribution to the Seebeck effect by antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuation is developed. It accounts for the magnitude and scaling properties of such bump feature in our experimental data. This analysis allows to extract precious information on the coupling between electrons and AFM spin fluctuations in these parent compound systems, with implications on the pairing mechanism of the related superconducting compounds.

Magnetic compensation phenomenon by Nd doping in spin surplus Sm based ferromagnetic intermetallic SmScGe

The magnetization compensation phenomenon is observed for Sm1-xNdxScGe at x = 0.09 at a temperature near 90 K in a small applied magnetic field, which establishes the spin surplus status of magnetic moment of Sm in the host matrix. We also noted that the sample profiles in QD SQUID magnetometer become asymmetric in some situations indicating significant contributions from multiple moments higher than the dipole moment. We have successfully accounted for them using a fitting procedure involving the higher order magnetic moments.

Self-magnetic compensation and Exchange Bias in ferromagnetic Samarium systems

For Sm(3+) ions in a vast majority of metallic systems, the following interesting scenario has been conjured up for long, namely, a magnetic lattice of tiny self (spin-orbital) compensated 4f-moments exchange coupled (and phase reversed) to the polarization in the conduction band. We report here the identification of a self-compensation behavior in a variety of ferromagnetic Sm intermetallics via the fingerprint of a shift in the magnetic hysteresis (M-H) loop from the origin. Such an attribute, designated as exchange bias in the context of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic multilayers, accords these compounds a potential for niche applications in spintronics. We also present results on magnetic compensation behavior on small Gd doping (2.5 atomic percent) in one of the Sm ferromagnets (viz. SmCu(4)Pd). The doped system responds like a pseudo-ferrimagnet and it displays a characteristic left-shifted linear M-H plot for an antiferromagnet.

Magnetic properties of EuPtSi$_3$ single crystals

Single crystals of EuPtSi$_3$, which crystallize in the BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been grown by high temperature solution growth method using molten Sn as the solvent. EuPtSi$_3$ which lacks the inversion symmetry and has only one Eu site in the unit cell is found to be an antiferromagnet with two successive magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 17 K and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 16 K, as inferred from magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer measurements. The isothermal magnetization data for $H \parallel$ [001] reveal a metamagnetic transition at a critical field $H_{\rm c}$ = 1 T. The magnetization saturates to a moment value of 6.43 $μ_{\rm B}$/Eu above 5.9 T (9.2 T) for $H \parallel $ [001] ([100]), indicating that these fields are spin-flip fields for the divalent Eu moments along the two axes. The origin of this anisotropic behaviour is discussed. A magnetic (H, T) phase diagram has been constructed from the temperature dependence of isothermal magnetization data. The reduced jump in the heat capacity at $T_{\rm N1}$ indicates a transition to an incommensurate, amplitude modulated antiferromagnetic structure. The shape of the hyperfine field split Mössbauer spectrum at $T_{\rm N1}$ provides additional support for the proposed nature of this magnetic transition.

Magnetic Anisotropy in Single Crystalline CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$

We have grown the single crystals of LaAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ and CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ by high temperature solution method and report on the anisotropic magnetic behavior of CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ . The compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic structure with space group \textit {Pnma}. LaAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ shows a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior. CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ do not order down to 1.8 K. The easy axis of magnetization for CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ is along [010] direction. The magnetization data is analyzed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) model.

New Samarium and Neodymium based admixed ferromagnets with near zero net magnetization and tunable exchange bias field

Rare earth based intermetallics, SmScGe and NdScGe, are shown to exhibit near zero net magnetization with substitutions of 6 to 9 atomic percent of Nd and 25 atomic percent of Gd, respectively. The notion of magnetic compensation in them is also elucidated by the crossover of zero magnetization axis at low magnetic fields (less than 103 Oe) and field-induced reversal in the orientation of the magnetic moments of the dissimilar rare earth ions at higher magnetic fields. These magnetically ordered materials with no net magnetization and appreciable conduction electron polarization display an attribute of an exchange bias field, which can be tuned. The attractively high magnetic ordering temperatures of about 270 K, underscore the importance of these materials for potential applications in spintronics.

Experimental confirmation of the low B isotope coefficient in MgB2

Recent investigations have shown that the first proposed explanations of the disagreement between experimental and theoretical value of isotope coefficient in MgB2 need to be reconsidered. Considering that in samples with residual resistivity of few mu-Ohm cm critical temperature variations produced by disorder effects can be comparable with variations due to the isotopic effect, we adopt a procedure in evaluating the B isotope coefficient which take account of these effects, obtaining a value which is in agreement with previous results and then confirming that there is something still unclear in the physics of MgB2.

Synthesis, crystal structure, microstructure, transport and magnetic properties of SmFeAsO and SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07)

SmFeAsO and the isostructural superconducting SmFeAs(O0.93F0.07) samples were prepared. Characterization by means of Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data, scanning electron microscope observation, transmission electron microscope analysis, resistivity and magnetization measurements were carried out. Sintering treatment strongly improves the grain connectivity, but, on the other hand, induces a competition between the thermodynamic stability of the oxy-pnictide and Sm2O3, hence worsening the purity of the sample. In the pristine sample both magnetization and resistivity measurements clearly indicate that two different sources of magnetism are present: the former related to Fe ordering at 140 K and the latter due to the Sm ions that orders antiferromagnetically at low temperature. The feature at 140 K disappears in the F-substituted sample and, at low temperatures a superconducting transition appears. The magnetoresistivity curves of the F-substituted sample probably indicates very high critical field values.

Study of CeNi4Mn by neutron diffraction

We report neutron diffraction measurements on CeNi4Mn, which has recently been identified as a soft ferromagnet (Tc ~ 140 K) with a sizeable spin-transport polarization. Our data show conclusively that the Mn atoms occupy a unique site (4c) in the unit cell, which has the symmetry of the cubic MgCu4Sn-type structure. We infer a moment of 4.6 mu_B on Mn at 17 K, which is oriented ferromagnetically along the {101} plane. The amplitude of the Mn vibrational motion is found to be larger than that of Ce and Ni atoms at all temperatures, thereby lending support to theoretical prediction of rattling phonon modes in this compound.

Point-contact spectroscopy in neutron-irradiated Mg^{11}B_2

We report on recent results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in Mg^{11}B_2 polycrystals irradiated at different neutron fluences up to 1.4 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}. The point contacts were made by putting a small drop of Ag paint -- acting as the counterelectrode -- on the cleaved surface of the samples. The gap amplitudes were extracted from the experimental conductance curves, showing Andreev-reflection features, through a two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk fit and reported as a function of the Andreev critical temperature of the junctions, TcA. The resulting Delta_sigma(TcA) and Delta_pi(TcA) curves show a clear merging of the gaps when TcA ~ 9K that perfectly confirms the findings of specific-heat measurements in the same samples. Anomalous contacts with TcA > Tc (being Tc the bulk critical temperature) were often obtained, particularly in samples irradiated at very high fluences. Their fit gave a different dependence of Delta_pi on TcA. The possible origin of these contacts is discussed in terms of local current-induced annealing and/or nanoscale inhomogeneities observed by STM in the most irradiated samples.

Effects of neutron irradiation on polycrystalline Mg11B2

We studied the influence of the disorder introduced in polycrystalline MgB2 samples by neutron irradiation. To circumvent self shielding effects due to the strong interaction between thermal neutrons and 10B we employed isotopically enriched 11B which contains 40 times less 10B than natural B. The comparison of electrical and structural properties of different series of samples irradiated in different neutron sources, also using Cd shields, allowed us to conclude that, despite the low 10B content, the main damage mechanisms are caused by thermal neutrons, whereas fast neutrons play a minor role. Irradiation leads to an improvement in both upper critical field and critical current density for an exposure level in the range 1-2x1018 cm-2. With increasing fluence the superconducting properties are depressed. An in-depth analysis of the critical field and current density behaviour has been carried out to identify what scattering and pinning mechanisms come into play. Finally the correlation between some characteristic lengths and the transition widths is analysed.

Microwave Harmonic Emission in MgB2 Superconductor: Comparison with YBaCuO

We report results of microwave second-harmonic generation in ceramic samples of MgB2, prepared by different methods. The SH signal has been investigated as a function of the temperature and the static magnetic field. The results are discussed in the framework of models reported in the literature. We show that the peculiarities of the SH signal are related to the specific properties of the sample. A comparison with the results obtained in ceramic and crystalline YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) shows that the second-harmonic emission in MgB2 is weaker than that observed in ceramic YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7).
