Unconditional accumulation of nonclassicality in a single-atom mechanical oscillator

We report on the robust experimental accumulation of nonclassicallity of motion of a single trapped ion. The nonclassicality stems from deterministic incoherent modulation of thermal phonon number distribution implemented by a laser excitation of nonlinear coupling between the ion's internal - electronic levels and external - motional states. We demonstrate that the repetitive application of this nonlinear process monotonically accumulates the observable state nonclassicality. The output states converge to a phonon number distribution with high overlap with a particular Fock state and visible quantum non-Gaussian aspects including corresponding negative Wigner function. The resulting oscillator states prove deterministic transition in the hierarchy of quantum non-Gaussianity up to four phonons. This transition is very robust against experimental imperfections and produces increasing entanglement potential.

Violation of Bell's inequalities with pre-amplified homodyne detection

We show that the use of probabilistic noiseless amplification in entangled coherent state-based schemes for the test of quantum non locality provides substantial advantages. The threshold amplitude to falsify a Bell-CHSH non locality test, in fact, is significantly reduced when amplification is embedded into the test itself. Such a beneficial effect holds also in the presence of detection-inefficiency. Our study helps in affirming noiseless amplification as a valuable tool for coherent information processing and the generation of strongly non classical states of bosonic systems.

Generating "squeezed" superpositions of coherent states using photon addition and subtraction

We study how photon addition and subtraction can be used to generate squeezed superpositions of coherent states in free-traveling fields (SSCSs) with high fidelities and large amplitudes. It is shown that an arbitrary $N$-photon subtraction results in the generation of a SSCS with nearly the perfect fidelity ($F>0.999$) regardless of the number of photons subtracted. In this case, the amplitude of the SSCS increases as the number of the subtracted photons gets larger. For example, two-photon subtraction from a squeezed vacuum state of 6.1dB can generate a SSCS of $α=1.26$, while in the case of the four-photon subtraction a SSCS of a larger amplitude $α=1.65$ is obtained under the same condition. When a photon is subtracted from a squeezed vacuum state and another photon is added subsequently, a SSCS with a lower fidelity ($F\approx 0.96$) yet higher amplitude ($α\approx2$) can be generated. We analyze some experimental imperfections including inefficiency of the detector used for the photon subtraction.

Quantum Filtering of Optical Coherent States

We propose and experimentally demonstrate non-destructive and noiseless removal (filtering) of vacuum states from an arbitrary set of coherent states of continuous variable systems. Errors i.e. vacuum states in the quantum information are diagnosed through a weak measurement, and on that basis, probabilistically filtered out. We consider three different filters based on on/off detection phase stabilized and phase randomized homodyne detection. We find that on/off etection, optimal in the ideal theoretical setting, is superior to the homodyne strategy in a practical setting.

On the distillation and purification of phase-diffused squeezed states

Recently it was discovered that non-Gaussian decoherence processes, such as phase-diffusion, can be counteracted by purification and distillation protocols that are solely built on Gaussian operations. Here, we make use of this experimentally highly accessible regime, and provide a detailed experimental and theoretical analysis of several strategies for purification/distillation protocols on phase-diffused squeezed states. Our results provide valuable information for the optimization of such protocols with respect to the choice of the trigger quadrature, the trigger threshold value and the probability of generating a distilled state.

Characterization of the entanglement of two squeezed states

We study a continuous-variable entangled state composed of two states which are squeezed in two opposite quadratures in phase space. Various entanglement conditions are tested for the entangled squeezed state and we study decoherence models for noise, producing a mixed entangled squeezed state. We briefly describe a probabilistic protocol for entanglement swapping based on the use of this class of entangled states and the main features of a general generation scheme.

Reversibility of continuous-variable quantum cloning

We analyze a reversibility of optimal Gaussian $1\to 2$ quantum cloning of a coherent state using only local operations on the clones and classical communication between them and propose a feasible experimental test of this feature. Performing Bell-type homodyne measurement on one clone and anti-clone, an arbitrary unknown input state (not only a coherent state) can be restored in the other clone by applying appropriate local unitary displacement operation. We generalize this concept to a partial LOCC reversal of the cloning and we show that this procedure converts the symmetric cloner to an asymmetric cloner. Further, we discuss a distributed LOCC reversal in optimal $1\to M$ Gaussian cloning of coherent states which transforms it to optimal $1\to M'$ cloning for $M'<M$. Assuming the quantum cloning as a possible eavesdropping attack on quantum communication link, the reversibility can be utilized to improve the security of the link even after the attack.
