Mind the gap

In this summary of the application of Dyson-Schwinger equations to the theory and phenomenology of hadrons, some deductions following from a nonperturbative, symmetry-preserving truncation are highlighted, notable amongst which are results for pseudoscalar mesons. We also describe inferences from the gap equation relating to the radius of convergence of a chiral expansion, applications to heavy-light and heavy-heavy mesons, and quantitative estimates of the contribution of quark orbital angular momentum in pseudoscalar mesons; and recapitulate upon studies of nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

Hadron Physics and the Dyson--Schwinger Equations of QCD

We use the Bethe-Salpeter equation in rainbow-ladder truncation to calculate the ground state mesons from the chiral limit to bottomonium, with an effective interaction that was previously fitted to the chiral condensate and pion decay constant. Our results are in reasonable agreement with the data, as are the vector and pseudoscalar decay constants. The meson mass differences tend to become constant in the heavy-quark limit. We also present calculations for the pion and rho electromagnetic form factors, and for the single-quark form factors of the η_c and J/ψ.

Schwinger functions and light-quark bound states, and sigma terms

We explore the viability of using solely spacelike information about a Schwinger function to extract properties of bound states. In a concrete example it is not possible to determine properties of states with masses \gsim 1.2 GeV. Modern Dyson-Schwinger equation methods supply a well-constrained tool that provide access to hadron masses and σ-terms. We report values of the latter for a range of hadrons. Of interest is analysis relating to a u,d scalar meson, which is compatible with a picture of the lightest 0^{++} as a bound state of a dressed-quark and -antiquark supplemented by a material pion cloud. A constituent-quark σ-term is defined, which affords a means for assessing the flavour-dependence of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

QCD modeling of hadron physics

We review recent developments in the understanding of meson properties as solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in rainbow-ladder truncation. Included are recent results for the pseudoscalar and vector meson masses and leptonic decay constants, ranging from pions up to c\bar{c} bound states; extrapolation to b\bar{b} states is explored. We also present a new and improved calculation of F_π(Q^2) and an analysis of the πγγtransition form factor for both π(140) and π(1330). Lattice-QCD results for propagators and the quark-gluon vertex are analyzed, and the effects of quark-gluon vertex dressing and the three-gluon coupling upon meson masses are considered.

Electromagnetic properties of ground and excited state pseudoscalar mesons

The axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity places constraints on particular properties of every pseudoscalar meson. For example, in the chiral limit all pseudoscalar mesons, except the Goldstone mode, decouple from the axial-vector current. Nevertheless, all neutral pseudoscalar mesons couple to two photons. The strength of the π_n^0 γγcoupling, where n=0 denotes the Goldstone mode, is affected by the Abelian anomaly's continuum contribution. The effect is material for n \neq 0. The γ* π_n γ* transition form factor, T_{π_n}(Q^2), is nonzero for all n, and T_{π_n}(Q^2) \approx (4π^2/3) (f_{π_n}/Q^2) at large Q^2. For all pseudoscalars but the Goldstone mode, this leading contribution vanishes in the chiral limit. In this instance the ultraviolet power-law behaviour is 1/Q^4 for n \neq 0, and we find numerically T_{π_1}(Q^2) \simeq (4π^2/3) (-<\bar q q>/Q^4). This subleading power-law behaviour is always present. In general its coefficient is not simply related to f_{π_n}. The properties of n \neq 0 pseudoscalar mesons are sensitive to the pointwise behaviour of the long-range piece of the interaction between light-quarks.

Diquark properties and their role in hadrons

Diquark correlations are important in baryons, which can be modeled as quark-diquark bound states. In addition, diquarks could play a role in non-standard hadrons such as tetraquarks and pentaquarks. Here, we obtain properties of these diquarks from the corresponding bound state equation, using a model for the effective quark-quark interaction that has proved successful in the light meson sector. Subsequently, we use the same model to estimate the masses of the lightest diquark-diquark and diquark-antidiquark states.

Pseudoscalar and vector mesons as q\bar{q} bound states

Two-body bound states such as mesons are described by solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We discuss recent results for the pseudoscalar and vector meson masses and leptonic decay constants, ranging from pions up to c\bar{c} bound states. Our results are in good agreement with data. Essential in these calculation is a momentum-dependent quark mass function, which evolves from a constituent-quark mass in the infrared region to a current-quark mass in the perturbative region. In addition to the mass spectrum, we review the electromagnetic form factors of the light mesons. Electromagnetic current conservation is manifest and the influence of intermediate vector mesons is incorporated self-consistently. The results for the pion form factor are in excellent agreement with experiment.

Analytic structure of the Landau gauge gluon propagator

The results of different non-perturbative studies agree on a power law as the infrared behavior of the Landau gauge gluon propagator. This propagator violates positivity and thus indicates the absence of the transverse gluons from the physical spectrum, i.e. gluon confinement. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed capturing all of its features. We comment also on related investigations for the Landau gauge quark propagator.

Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Unquenched ${QED}_3$

We investigate dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in unquenched ${QED}_3$ using the coupled set of Dyson--Schwinger equations for the fermion and photon propagators. For the fermion-photon interaction we employ an ansatz which satisfies its Ward--Green--Takahashi identity. We present self-consistent analytical solutions in the infrared as well as numerical results for all momenta. In Landau gauge, we find a phase transition at a critical number of flavours of $N_f^{\mathrm crit} \approx 4$. In the chirally symmetric phase the infrared behaviour of the propagators is described by power laws with interrelated exponents. For $N_f=1$ and $N_f=2$ we find small values for the chiral condensate in accordance with bounds from recent lattice calculations. We investigate the Dyson--Schwinger equations in other linear covariant gauges as well. A comparison of their solutions to the accordingly transformed Landau gauge solutions shows that the quenched solutions are approximately gauge covariant, but reveals a significant amount of violation of gauge covariance for the unquenched solutions.

Analytic structure of the gluon and quark propagators in Landau gauge QCD

In Landau gauge QCD the infrared behavior of the propagator of transverse gluons can be analytically determined to be a power law from Dyson-Schwinger equations. This propagator clearly shows positivity violation, indicating the absence of the transverse gluons from the physical spectrum, i.e. gluon confinement. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed capturing all important features. We provide arguments that the Landau gauge quark propagator possesses a singularity on the real timelike axis. For this propagator we find a positive definite Schwinger function.

Analytic properties of the Landau gauge gluon and quark propagators

We explore the analytic structure of the gluon and quark propagators of Landau gauge QCD from numerical solutions of the coupled system of renormalized Dyson--Schwinger equations and from fits to lattice data. We find sizable negative norm contributions in the transverse gluon propagator indicating the absence of the transverse gluon from the physical spectrum. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed. For the quark propagator we find evidence for a mass-like singularity on the real timelike momentum axis, with a mass of 350 to 500 MeV. Within the employed Green's functions approach we identify a crucial term in the quark-gluon vertex that leads to a positive definite Schwinger function for the quark propagator.

Dyson-Schwinger equations: a tool for hadron physics

Dyson-Schwinger equations furnish a Poincare' covariant framework within which to study hadrons. A particular feature is the existence of a nonperturbative, symmetry preserving truncation that enables the proof of exact results. The gap equation reveals that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is tied to the long-range behaviour of the strong interaction, which is thereby constrained by observables, and the pion is precisely understood, and seen to exist simultaneously as a Goldstone mode and a bound state of strongly dressed quarks. The systematic error associated with the simplest truncation has been quantified, and it underpins a one-parameter model efficacious in describing an extensive body of mesonic phenomena. Incipient applications to baryons have brought successes and encountered challenges familiar from early studies of mesons, and promise a covariant field theory upon which to base an understanding of contemporary large momentum transfer data.

Facets of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking

The gap equation is a cornerstone in understanding dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and may also provide clues to confinement. A symmetry-preserving truncation of its kernel enables proofs of important results and the development of an efficacious phenomenology. We describe a model of the kernel that yields: a momentum-dependent dressed-quark propagator in fair agreement with quenched lattice-QCD results; and chiral limit values: f_pi= 68 MeV and = -(190 MeV)^3. It is compared with models inferred from studies of the gauge sector.

Strong Decays of Light Vector Mesons

The vector meson strong decays rho-->pi pi, phi-->KK, and K^star-->pi K are studied within a covariant approach based on the ladder-rainbow truncation of the QCD Dyson--Schwinger equation for the quark propagator and the Bethe--Salpeter equation for the mesons. The model preserves the one-loop behavior of QCD in the ultraviolet, has two infrared parameters, and implements quark confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. The 3-point decay amplitudes are described in impulse approximation. The Bethe--Salpeter study motivates a method for estimating the masses for heavier mesons within this model without continuing the propagators into the complex plane. We test the accuracy via the rho, phi and K^{star} masses and then produce estimates of the model results for the a_1 and b_1 masses as well as the mass of the proposed exotic vector pi_1(1400).

Effective masses of diquarks

We study meson and diquark bound states using the rainbow-ladder truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. The infrared strength of the rainbow-ladder kernel is described by two parameters. The ultraviolet behavior is fixed by the one-loop renormalization group behavior of QCD, which ensures the correct asymptotic behavior of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes and brings important qualitative benefits. The diquark with the lowest mass is the scalar, followed by the axialvector and pseudoscalar diquark. This ordering can be anticipated from the meson sector.

Electromagnetic Transition Form Factors of Light Mesons

We study selected meson transition processes and associated form factors within a model of QCD based on the Dyson--Schwinger equations truncated to ladder-rainbow level. The infrared structure of the ladder-rainbow kernel is described by two parameters; the ultraviolet behavior is fixed by the one-loop renormalization group behavior of QCD. The work is restricted to the u and d quark sector and allows a Poincare'-covariant study of the radiative decays: rho -> pi + gamma, omega -> pi + gamma, and pi^0 -> gamma + gamma. Particular attention is paid to the form factors for the associated transitions: gamma^* + pi^0 -> gamma, gamma^* + pi^0 -> gamma^*, gamma^* + pi -> rho and gamma^* + rho -> pi. The latter two processes are of interest as contributors to meson electroproduction from hadronic targets away from the s-channel resonance region. We use the present QCD model to explore limitations to the assumption that coupling to a t-channel virtual qbar-q correlation can be modeled as meson exchange.

Electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions of light mesons

The ladder-rainbow truncation of the set of Dyson-Schwinger equations is used to study a variety of electroweak and strong processes involving light mesons. The parameters in the effective interaction are constrained by the chiral condensate and f_π; the current quark masses are fitted to m_πand m_K. The obtained electromagnetic form factors are in good agreement with the data. Also the weak K_{l3} decay and the radiative and strong decays of the vector mesons agree reasonably well with the data. Finally, we indicate how processes such as π-πscattering can be described within this framework as well.

Finite T meson correlations and quark deconfinement

Finite temperature spatial $\bar q q$ correlation modes in the $π$ and $ρ$ channels are studied with the rainbow-ladder truncated quark Dyson-Schwinger equation and Bethe-Salpeter equation in the Matsubara formalism. To retain the finite range of the effective interaction while facilitating summation over fermion Matsubara modes necessary to ensure continuity at {T=0}, a separable kernel is used. The model is fixed by {T=0} properties and it implements dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement. Above and below the deconfinement and chiral restoration transitions, we study $M_π(T)$, $f_π(T)$ and the 3-space transverse and longitudinal masses $M_ρ^T(T)$ and $M_ρ^L(T)$. For the $ρ$ mode we also study the strong and electromagnetic partial widths to determine the $T$-dependence that is generated by the quark content. The $ρ\to ππ$ width decreases sharply just above the chiral restoration transition leaving the $ρ$ with only its narrow {$e^+ e^-$} width. We discuss improvements needed by this model, especially in regard to the high $T$ behavior of the masses where we compare to lattice QCD simulations.
