Large magnon dichroism and other optical properties of hexagonal ferrite h-Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 with altermagnetic A2 spin ordering

Multiferroic hexagonal h-Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 single crystals with non-collinear spins were studied using the THz and Raman scattering spectroscopies and ellipsometry. Antiferromagnetic resonances, or magnons, were found at about 0.85 THz and 1.2 THz. These magnons harden as temperature increases and disappear above 130 K. This behavior is consistent with the magnetic susceptibility and a phase transition to a previously reported weak ferromagnetic state. A strong dichroism at the resonance with the AFM doublet has been observed at zero external magnetic field using both conventional circular polarization and THz vector vortex beams. This observation is attributed to the strong altermagnetic properties of h-Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 with a broken PT symmetry. The splitting of the magnon doublet in an external magnetic field applied long the c axis yields a g-factor of 3.0 for the Fe3+ ions. Raman spectra of the optical phonons revealed a Fano-type asymmetry due to their interaction with a continuum of polar excitations. Electronic transitions were studied with ellipsometry and the results were compared with the modelled using DFT+eDMFT.

Dynamics of surface electrons in a topological insulator: cyclotron resonance at room temperature

The ability to manipulate the surface states of topological insulators using electric or magnetic fields under ambient conditions is a key step toward their integration into future electronic and optoelectronic devices. Here, we demonstrate - using cyclotron resonance measurements on a tin-doped BiSbTe$_2$S topological insulator - that moderate magnetic fields can quantize massless surface electrons into Landau levels even at room temperature. This finding suggests that surface-state electrons can behave as long-lived quasiparticles at unexpectedly high temperatures.

Infrared ellipsometry study of the charge dynamics in K3p-terphenyl

We report an infrared ellipsometry study of the charge carrier dynamics in polycrystalline Kxp-terphenyl samples with nominal $x=3$, for which signatures of high-temperature superconductivity were previously reported. The infrared spectra are dominated by two Lorentzian bands with maxima around 4 000 cm$^{-1}$ and 12 000 cm$^{-1}$ which, from a comparison with calculations based on a H\"uckel model are assigned to intra-molecular excitations of $\pi$ electrons of the anionic p-terphenyl molecules. The inter-molecular electronic excitations are much weaker and give rise to a Drude peak and a similarly weak Lorentzian band around 220 cm$^{-1}$. A dc resistivity of about 0.3 $\Omega$ cm at 300 K is deduced from the IR data, comparable to values measured by electrical resistivity on a twin sample. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the low-frequency response reveals a gradual decrease of the plasma frequency and the scattering rate of the Drude peak below 300 K that gets anomalously enhanced below 90 K. The corresponding missing spectral weight of the Drude peak appears blue-shifted towards the Lorentz-band at 220 cm$^{-1}$. This characteristic blue-shift signifies an enhanced localization of the charge carriers at low temperatures and contrasts the behavior expected for a bulk superconducting state for which the missing spectral weight would be redshifted to a delta-function at zero frequency that accounts for the loss-free response of the superconducting condensate. Our data might still be compatible with a filamentary superconducting state with a volume fraction well below the percolation limit for which the spatial confinement of the condensate can result in a plasmonic resonance at finite frequency.

Infrared study of the interplay of charge, spin, and lattice excitations in the magnetic topological insulator EuIn$_2$As$_{2}$

We report an infrared spectroscopy study of the axion topological insulator candidate EuIn$_2$As$_2$ for which the Eu moments exhibit an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_N \simeq 18 \mathrm{K}$. The low energy response is composed of a weak Drude peak at the origin, a pronounced infrared-active phonon mode at 185 cm$^{-1}$ and a free carrier plasma edge around 600 cm$^{-1}$. The interband transitions start above 800 cm$^{-1}$ and give rise to a series of weak absorption bands at 5\,000 and 12\,000 cm$^{-1}$ and strong ones at 20\,000, 27\,500 and 32\,000 cm$^{-1}$. The AFM transition gives rise to pronounced anomalies of the charge response in terms of a cusp-like maximum of the free carrier scattering rate around $T_N$ and large magnetic splittings of the interband transitions at 5\,000 and 12\,000 cm$^{-1}$. The phonon mode at 185 cm$^{-1}$ has also an anomalous temperature dependence around $T_N$ which suggests that it couples to the fluctuations of the Eu spins. The combined data provide evidence for a strong interaction amongst the charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom.

Infrared study of the multiband low-energy excitations of the topological antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

With infrared spectroscopy we studied the bulk electronic properties of the topological antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ with $T_N \simeq 25~\mathrm{K}$. With the support of band structure calculations, we assign the intra- and interband excitations and determine the band gap of $E_g \approx$ 0.17 eV. We also obtain evidence for two types of conduction bands with light and very heavy carriers. The multiband free carrier response gives rise to an unusually strong increase of the combined plasma frequency, $\omega_{\mathrm{pl}}$, below 300 K. The band reconstruction below $T_N$, yields an additional increase of $\omega_{\mathrm{pl}}$ and a splitting of the transition between the two conduction bands by about 54 meV. Our study thus reveals a complex and strongly temperature dependent multi-band low-energy response that has important implications for the study of the surface states and device applications.

Total angular momentum dichroism of the terahertz vortex beams at the antiferromagnetic resonances

Terahertz vortex beams with different superposition of the orbital angular momentum $l={\pm}1$, ${\pm}2$, ${\pm}3$, and ${\pm}4$ and spin angular momentum ${\sigma}={\pm}1$ were used to study antiferromagnetic (AFM) resonances in TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ single crystals. In both materials we observed a strong vortex beam dichroism for the AFM resonances that are split in external magnetic field. The magnitude of the vortex dichroism is comparable to that for conventional circular dichroism due to ${\sigma}$. The selection rules at the AFM resonances are governed by the total angular momentum of the vortex beam: $j={\sigma}+l$. In particular, for $l={\pm}2$, ${\pm}3$, and ${\pm}4$ the sign of $l$ is shown to dominate over that for conventional circular polarization ${\sigma}$.

Muon spin rotation and infrared spectroscopy study of $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$

The magnetic and superconducting properties of a series of underdoped $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$ (BNFA) single crystals with $0.19 \leq x\leq 0.34$ has been investigated with the complementary muon-spin-rotation ($\mu$SR) and infrared spectroscopy techniques. The focus has been on the different antiferromagnetic states in the underdoped regime and their competition with superconductivity, especially for the ones with a tetragonal crystal structure and a so-called double-$Q$ magnetic order. Besides the collinear state with a spatially inhomogeneous spin-charge-density wave (i-SCDW) order at $x=0.24$ and $0.26$, that was previously identified in BNFA, we obtained evidence for an orthomagnetic state with a "hedgehog"-type spin vortex crystal (SVC) structure at $x=0.32$ and $0.34$. Whereas in the former i-SCDW state the infrared spectra show no sign of a superconducting response down to the lowest measured temperature of about 10K, in the SVC state there is a strong superconducting response similar to the one at optimum doping. The magnetic order is strongly suppressed here in the superconducting state and at $x=0.34$ there is even a partial re-entrance into a paramagnetic state at $T<<T_c$.

Superconductivity-induced transverse plasma mode and phonon anomaly in the $c$-axis response of the bilayer compound RbCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

With infrared spectroscopy we studied the out-of-plane ($c$-axis) response of the iron arsenide superconductor ACa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ (A = Rb,Cs) which has a bilayer structure similar to the high $T_c$ cuprates YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ (Bi2212). In analogy to the cuprates, we observe a superconductivity-induced transverse plasma mode (tPM) and a phonon anomaly that are both signatures of local electric field effects that arise from a large difference between the local conductivities in the intra- and inter-bilayer regions. Using a multilayer model developed for the cuprates, we obtain a good description of the $c$-axis response and derive the local conductivities at $T \simeq T_c$ of $\sigma_1^{\mathrm{bl}}(\omega \rightarrow 0) \simeq$ 1\,000 $\Omega^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$ and $\sigma_1^{\mathrm{int}}(\omega \rightarrow 0) \simeq$ 15 $\Omega^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$, respectively, that are similar to the ones previously found in underdoped YBCO. Different from the cuprates, we find no evidence of a normal state pseudogap in terms of a partial suppression of the low-energy electronic states that sets in already well above $T_c$. There is also no clear sign of an onset of precursor superconducting pairing correlations well above $T_c \simeq$ 30~K. This highlights that the pseudogap and the precursor superconducting pairing well above $T_c$ are unique features of the cuprates with their strong electronic correlations and, for example, not just the result of a strongly anisotropic electronic response due to the layered crystal structure.

Optical Signature of a Crossover from Mott- to Slater-type Gap in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$

With optical spectroscopy we provide evidence that the insulator-metal transition in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{4}$ occurs close to a crossover from the Mott- to the Slater-type. The Mott-gap at $x = 0$ persists to high temperature and evolves without an anomaly across the N\'{e}el temperature, $T_N$. Upon Rh-doping, it collapses rather rapidly and vanishes around $x = 0.055$. Notably, just as the Mott-gap vanishes yet another gap appears that is of the Slater-type and develops right below $T_N$. This Slater-gap is only partial and is accompanied by a reduced scattering rate of the remaining free carriers, similar as in the parent compounds of the iron arsenide superconductors.

Infrared spectroscopy study of the in-plane response of YBa2Cu3O6.6 in magnetic fields up to 30 Tesla

With Terahertz and Infrared spectroscopy we studied the in-plane response of an underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6 single crystal with Tc=58(1) K in high magnetic fields up to B=30 Tesla applied along the c-axis. Our goal was to investigate the field-induced suppression of superconductivity and to observe the signatures of the three dimensional (3d) incommensurate copper charge density wave (Cu-CDW) which was previously shown to develop at such high magnetic fields. Our study confirms that a B-field in excess of 20 Tesla gives rise to a full suppression of the macroscopic response of the superconducting condensate. However, it reveals surprisingly weak signatures of the 3d Cu-CDW at high magnetic fields. At 30 Tesla there is only a weak reduction of the spectral weight of the Drude-response (by about 3%) that is accompanied by an enhancement of two narrow electronic modes around 90 and 240 cm-1, that are interpreted in terms of pinned phase modes of the CDW along the a- and b-direction, respectively, and of the so-called mid-infrared (MIR) band. The pinned phased modes and the MIR band are strong features already without magnetic field which suggests that prominent but short-ranged and slowly fluctuating (compared to the picosecond IR-time scale) CDW correlations exist all along, i.e., even at zero magnetic field.

Band-selective clean- and dirty-limit superconductivity with nodeless gaps in the bilayer iron-based superconductor CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$

The optical properties of the new iron-based superconductor CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with $T_c \sim 29$~K have been determined. In the normal state a good description of the low-frequency response is obtained with a superposition of two Drude components of which one has a very low scattering rate (narrow Drude-peak) and the other a rather large one (broad Drude-peak). Well below $T_c \sim 29$~K, a pronounced gap feature is observed which involves a complete suppression of the optical conductivity below $\sim$ 110~cm$^{-1}$ and thus is characteristic of a nodeless superconducting state. The optical response of the broad Drude-component can be described with a dirty-limit Mattis-Bardeen-type response with a single isotropic gap of $2\Delta \simeq 14$~meV. To the contrary, the response of the narrow Drude-component is in the ultra-clean-limit and its entire spectral weight is transferred to the zero-frequency $\delta(\omega)$ function that accounts for the loss-free response of the condensate. These observations provide clear evidence for a band-selective coexistence of clean- and dirty-limit superconductivity with nodeless gaps in CsCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$.

Temperature-driven Topological Phase Transition and Intermediate Dirac Semimetal Phase in ZrTe$_5$

We present an infrared spectroscopy study of ZrTe$_5$, which confirms a recent theoretical proposal that this material exhibits a temperature-driven topological quantum phase transition from a weak to a strong topological insulating state with an intermediate Dirac semimetal state around $T_p \simeq$ 138K. Our study details the temperature evolution of the energy gap in the bulk electronic structure. We found that the energy gap closes around $T_p$ where the optical response exhibits characteristic signatures of a Dirac semimetal state, i.e. a linear frequency-dependent optical conductivity extrapolating to the origin (after subtracting a weak Drude response). This finding allows us to reconcile previous diverging reports about the topological nature of ZrTe$_5$ in terms of a variation of $T_p$ that depends on the crystal growth condition.

Scaling of the Fano effect of the in-plane Fe-As phonon and the superconducting critical temperature in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

By means of infrared spectroscopy we determine the temperature-doping phase diagram of the Fano effect for the in-plane Fe-As stretching mode in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. The Fano parameter $1/q^2$, which is a measure of the phonon coupling to the electronic particle-hole continuum, shows a remarkable sensitivity to the magnetic/structural orderings at low temperatures. More strikingly, at elevated temperatures in the paramagnetic/tetragonal state we find a linear correlation between $1/q^2$ and the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$. Based on theoretical calculations and symmetry considerations, we identify the relevant interband transitions that are coupled to the Fe-As mode. In particular, we show that a sizable $xy$ orbital component at the Fermi level is fundamental for the Fano effect and possibly also for the superconducting pairing.

Optical study of Dirac fermions and related phonon anomalies in antiferromagnetic compound CaFeAsF

We performed optical studies on CaFeAsF single crystals, a parent compound of the 1111-type iron-based superconductors that undergoes a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic at $T_s$ = 121 K and a magnetic one to a spin density wave (SDW) state at $T_N$ = 110 K. In the low temperature optical conductivity spectrum, after the subtraction of a narrow Drude peak, we observe a pronounced singularity around 300 cm$^{-1}$ that separates two regions of quasilinear conductivity. We outline that these characteristic absorption features are signatures of Dirac fermions, similar to what was previously reported for the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system [1]. In support of this interpretation, we show that for the latter system this singular feature disappears rapidly upon electron and hole doping, as expected if it arises from a van Hove singularity in-between two Dirac cones. Finally, we show that one of the infrared-active phonon modes (the Fe-As mode at 250 cm$^{-1}$) develops a strongly asymmetric line shape in the SDW state and note that this behaviour can be explained in terms of a strong coupling with the Dirac fermions.

Superconductivity and charge carrier localization in ultrathin $\mathbf{{La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4}/{La_2CuO_4}}$ bilayers

$\mathrm{La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4}$/$\mathrm{La_2CuO_4}$ (LSCO15/LCO) bilayers with a precisely controlled thickness of N unit cells (UCs) of the former and M UCs of the latter ([LSCO15\_N/LCO\_M]) were grown on (001)-oriented {\slao} (SLAO) substrates with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). X-ray diffraction and reciprocal space map (RSM) studies confirmed the epitaxial growth of the bilayers and showed that a [LSCO15\_2/LCO\_2] bilayer is fully strained, whereas a [LSCO15\_2/LCO\_7] bilayer is already partially relaxed. The \textit{in situ} monitoring of the growth with reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) revealed that the gas environment during deposition has a surprisingly strong effect on the growth mode and thus on the amount of disorder in the first UC of LSCO15 (or the first two monolayers of LSCO15 containing one $\mathrm{CuO_2}$ plane each). For samples grown in pure $\mathrm{N_2O}$ gas (growth type-B), the first LSCO15 UC next to the SLAO substrate is strongly disordered. This disorder is strongly reduced if the growth is performed in a mixture of $\mathrm{N_2O}$ and $\mathrm{O_2}$ gas (growth type-A). Electric transport measurements confirmed that the first UC of LSCO15 next to the SLAO substrate is highly resistive and shows no sign of superconductivity for growth type-B, whereas it is superconducting for growth type-A. Furthermore, we found, rather surprisingly, that the conductivity of the LSCO15 UC next to the LCO capping layer strongly depends on the thickness of the latter. A LCO capping layer with 7~UCs leads to a strong localization of the charge carriers in the adjacent LSCO15 UC and suppresses superconductivity. The magneto-transport data suggest a similarity with the case of weakly hole doped LSCO single crystals that are in a so-called {"{cluster-spin-glass state}"}

Infrared ellipsometry study of the photo-generated charge carriers at the (001) and (110) surfaces of SrTiO$_3$ crystals and the interface of corresponding LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures

With infrared (IR) ellipsometry and DC resistance measurements we investigated the photo-doping at the (001) and (110) surfaces of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) single crystals and at the corresponding interfaces of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LAO/STO) heterostructures. In the bare STO crystals we find that the photo-generated charge carriers, which accumulate near the (001) surface, have a similar depth profile and sheet carrier concentration as the confined electrons that were previously observed in LAO/STO (001) heterostructures. A large fraction of these photo-generated charge carriers persist at low temperature at the STO (001) surface even after the UV light has been switched off again. These persistent charge carriers seem to originate from oxygen vacancies that are trapped at the structural domain boundaries which develop below the so-called antiferrodistortive transition at T* = 105 K. This is most evident from a corresponding photo-doping study of the DC transport in STO (110) crystals for which the concentration of these domain boundaries can be modified by applying a weak uniaxial stress. The oxygen vacancies and their trapping by defects are also the source of the electrons that are confined to the interface of LAO/STO (110) heterostructures which likely do not have a polar discontinuity as in LAO/STO (001). In the former, the trapping and clustering of the oxygen vacancies also has a strong influence on the anisotropy of the charge carrier mobility. We show that this anisotropy can be readily varied and even inverted by various means, such as a gentle thermal treatment, UV irradiation, or even a weak uniaxial stress. Our experiments suggest that extended defects, which develop over long time periods (of weeks to months), can strongly influence the response of the confined charge carriers at the LAO/STO (110) interface.

Muon spin rotation and infrared spectroscopy study of magnetism and superconductivity in Ba$ _{1-x} $K$ _{x} $Fe$ _{2} $As$ _{2} $

Using muon spin rotation and infrared spectroscopy we study the relation between magnetism and superconductivity in Ba$ _{1-x} $K$ _{x} $Fe$ _{2} $As$ _{2} $ single crystals from the underdoped to the slightly overdoped regime. We find that the Fe magnetic moment is only moderately suppressed in most of the underdoped region where it decreases more slowly than the N\'{e}el-temperature, $ T^{\mathrm{N}} $. This applies for both the total Fe moment obtained from muon spin rotation and for the itinerant component that is deduced from the spectral weight of the spin-density-wave pair breaking peak in the infrared response. In the moderately underdoped region, superconducting and static magnetic orders co-exist on the nano-scale and compete for the same electronic states. The static magnetic moment disappears rather sharply near optimal doping, however, in the slightly overdoped region there is still an enhancement or slowing down of spin fluctuations in the superconducting state. Similar to the gap magnitude reported from specific heat measurements, the superconducting condensate density is nearly constant in the optimally- and slightly overdoped region, but exhibits a rather pronounced decrease on the underdoped side. Several of these observations are similar to the phenomenology in the electron doped counterpart Ba(Fe$ _{1-y} $Co$ _{y} $)$ _{2} $As$ _{2} $.

Anisotropy of the infrared-active phonon modes in the mono-domain state of tetragonal SrTiO3 (110)

With infrared and terahertz ellipsometry we investigated the anisotropy of the infrared active phonon modes in SrTiO3 (110) single crystals in the tetragonal state below the so-called antiferrodistortive transition at T* = 105 K. In particular, we show that the anisotropy of the oscillator strength of the so-called R-mode, which becomes weakly infrared active below T*, is a valuable indicator for the orientation of the structural domains. Our results reveal that a mono-domain state with the tetragonal axis (c-axis) parallel to the [001] direction can be created by applying a moderate uniaxial stress of about 2.3 MPa along the [1-10] direction (with a mechanical clamp). The resulting, intrinsic splitting of the infrared-active phonon modes is reported.
