Accretion Disk Line Emission in AGN: A Devil's Advocacy

We review the evidence for AGN optical and X-ray broad line emission from an accretion disk. We argue that there is little, if any, statistical evidence to support this assertion. The inconsistency is strongest for the rare class of Balmer profiles that show double peaks. The line profiles predicted by a simple illuminated disk model are often incompatible with the observations. We suggest that the Fe Kalpha line in Seyfert 1 galaxies, where a broad line is most often and most strongly detected, is actually a composite of two lines both with Gaussian profiles; one narrow/unshifted and the other broad/redshifted.

Disk Models for MCG-06-30-15: The Variability Challenge

Recent observations have shown that the Fe Kalpha line profile of the Seyfert~1 galaxy MCG-06-30-15 is strongly variable. We attempt accretion disk model fits to the Fa Kalpha line profiles in a high, low and medium continuum luminosity phase of this source. During the monitoring by Iwasawa et al. (1996) a broad red-shifted component remained reasonably constant while a narrower component at $\approx$ 6.4 keV strongly responded to continuum changes. Physically consistent fits are possible if the index xi of the power-law emissivity changes from 0.7 (high phase) to 3.0 (low phase). The shape of the red-shifted component at low phase is crucial to the disk model interpretation. We suggest that the actual shape may be a broad redshifted Gaussian. Three lines of evidence support the interpretation of the Fe Kalpha line as multicomponent, beyond the lack of correlation in the response to continuum changes of the red and blue components in MCG -06-30-15. (1) We show that the strong concentration of narrow peak centroids at 6.4 keV is inconsistent with expectations of a random distribution of disk orientations. (2) The average Fe Kalpha profile for a sample of 16 mostly Seyfert~1's suggests a natural decomposition into two Gaussians one unshifted/narrow and the other redshifted/broad. (3) Evidence for emission in excess to the expectation of disk models on the high energy side of the Fe Kalpha profile is both a challenge for low inclination disk models and support for the two component decomposition.

On the Origin of Broad Fe K alpha and Hi H alpha Lines in AGN

We examine the properties of the Fe emission lines that arise near 6.4 keV in the ASCA spectra of AGN. Our emphasis is on the Seyfert 1 galaxies where broad and apparently complex Fe K alpha emission is observed. We consider various origins for the line but focus on the pros and cons for line emitting accretion disk models. We develop a simple model of an illuminated disk capable of producing both X-ray and optical lines from a disk. The model is able to reproduce the observed Fe K alpha FWHM ratio as well as the radii of maximum emissivity implied by the profile redshifts. The overall profile shapes however do not fit well the predictions of our disk illumination model nor do we derive always consistent disk inclinations for the two lines. We conclude that the evidence for and against an accretion disk origin for the Fe K alpha emission is equal at best. The bulk of the data requires a very disparate set of line fits which shed little light on a coherent physical model. We briefly consider alternatives to disk emission models and show that a simple bicone model can reproduce the FE line profiles equally well.

Balmer Line Variations in the Radio-Loud AGN PG 1512+370

We present spectroscopic observations of the quasar PG~1512+370, covering the Hbeta line spectral range and collected at moderate resolution (2-7 A FWHM) from 1988 to 1996. The observations show that the blue wing of the Hbeta broad profile component has changed significantly in flux and shape between 1988 and 1990 and between 1995 and 1996. A displaced blue peak on the Hbeta profile, visible in 1988, but not in the 1990-1995 spectra, is revealed again in one of the spectra obtained in 1996. The blue peak (in both the 1988 and 1996 spectra) is centered at Delta v_r ~ -3000 +/- 500 km/s from the rest frame defined by the narrow component of Hbeta, and the OIII lambda4959,5007 lines. We discuss several conflicting interpretations of the data. We find that the variability of the Hbeta blue wing is consistent with Balmer line emission from regions whose motion is predominantly radial, if variations of the blue wing are a response to continuum changes. Alternatively, we note that observed Hbeta line profile variations are consistent with a variable line component as in a ``binary black hole'' scenario. More frequent observations of Hbeta are needed to distinguish among these hypotheses.

On the Difference Between Radio Quiet and Radio Loud AGN

A systematic difference in alignment between the central black hole spin and the angular momentum of the accreting gas may help explain several differences found in the optical and UV HST spectra of radio loud and radio quiet AGN.

Pictor A: A New Double-Peaked Emission Line Quasar

We obtained a new spectrum for the radio galaxy Pictor~A in December 1993. Comparison with previous data obtained in 1983 and 1987 shows that the broad component of the Balmer lines has increased considerably in strength and complexity. The Balmer lines now show a boxy, double peaked profile with FWZI$\sim$24000 \kms. Although the 1993 H\a\ profile is reminiscent of Arp~102B, accretion disk models face immediate difficulty because (1) the redshifted peak in the profile is considerably stronger than the blue one, and (2) the red and blue peaks varied at different epochs. The latter finding strongly favors a predominance of radial motion. We argue that Pictor~A, and the rare objects with similar extremely broad emission line profiles, are better understood if the orientation is such that the gas is predominantly moving along the line of sight (i.e.\ a geometrical extremum).

Multiple High-Velocity Emission-Line Systems in the E+S Pair CPG 29

A detailed study of the mixed-morphology galaxy pair CPG 29 (Arp 119, VV 347) shows spectacular spectroscopic peculiarities in the southern (spiral) component (Mkn 984) including a spatially resolved region, roughly aligned along the minor axis of the galaxy, with multiple emission-line components redshifted by as much as 1300 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the LINER nucleus. Strong [OI]\l6300 and [SII]ł\l6716,6731 emission suggest shock ionization. The rest of the galaxy's disk is spectroscopically undistinguished, with emission lines characteristic of disk H II regions and, in large part, ordered rotation. We discuss the following four possible explanations for the morphological and spectroscopic peculiarities in the spiral: (1) a super--wind scenario, supported by the high FIR luminosity of the spiral, and by emission line activity similar to that observed in FIR strong galaxies; (2) motion of the spiral through a hot, relatively dense intergalactic medium, possibly associated with the elliptical, that could affect the star formation rate and create a brightened disk rim; (3) a faint companion in direct collision with the disk, at $Δv_r \sim 1000$ \kms, that would straightforwardly explain the existence of the different redshift systems; (4) a pole on collision by the elliptical, that could produce the disturbed morphology and other properties of the spiral. The elliptical/spiral pole--on collision explains the high velocity line emitting regions as tidally stripped gas, and accounts for the presence of gas ionized by moterate velocity shocks. The morphology of Mrk 984 is consistent

Photometric and H$α$ observations of LSI+61303: detection of a $\sim$26 day V and JHK band modulation

We present new optical and infrared photometric observations and high resolution H$α$ spectra of the periodic radio star \lsi. The optical photometric data set covers the time interval 1985-1993 and amounts to about a hundred nights. A period of $\sim$26 days is found in the V band. The infrared data also present evidence for a similar periodicity, but with higher amplitude of variation (0\rmag 2). The spectroscopic observations include 16 intermediate and high dispersion spectra of \lsi\ collected between January 1989 and February 1993. The H$α$ emission line profile and its variations are analyzed. Several emission line parameters -- among them the H$α$ EW and the width of the H$α$ red hump -- change strongly at or close to radio maximum, and may exhibit periodic variability. We also observe a significant change in the peak separation. The H$α$ profile of \lsi\ does not seem peculiar for a Be star. However, several of the observed variations of the H$α$ profile can probably be associated with the presence of the compact, secondary star.

The Peculiar Balmer Line Profiles of OQ 208

We present spectrophotometric observations of the Broad Line Radio Galaxy OQ 208 (Mrk 668, 1404+286) obtained between 1985 and 1991. We show that the Balmer line fluxes and profile shapes undergo remarkable changes. The ratio of intensities between the broad and narrow components of Hbeta increased monotonically from 15 in 1985 to 40 in 1991. The peak of the broad components of Hbeta and Halpha were known to be strongly displaced to the red. We have discovered a correlation between the amplitude of the broad peak displacement and the luminosity of Hbeta, in the sense that the displacement is larger when the line luminosity is higher. We suggest that the observations are not compatible with either a binary Broad Line Region model or one involving ballistic acceleration of the line emitting gas. Radiative acceleration of a system of outflowing clouds readily explains the correlation between line shift and luminosity as well as the peculiar line profiles. Furthermore, it seems that most or all of the Balmer emission originates from the inward face of the clouds. Theoretical line profiles suggest that the observed Hbeta profile is best fit assuming the contribution of an ensemble which might be spherical or confined in a thick disk in addition to a component emitted in a thin shell contained in a cone of half opening angle 12 degrees seen along its axis.
