Homogeneous hydrodynamics of a collisional model of confined granular gases

The hydrodynamic equation governing the homogeneous time evolution of the temperature in a model of confined granular gas is studied by means of the Enskog equation. The existence of a normal solution of the kinetic equation is assumed as a condition for hydrodynamics. Dimensional analysis implies a scaling of the distribution function that is used to determine it in the first Sonine approximation, with a coefficient that evolves in time through its dependence on the temperature. The theoretical predictions are compared with numerical results obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo method, and a good agreement is found. The relevance of the normal homogeneous distribution function to derive inhomogeneous hydrodynamic equations, for instance using the Champan-Enskog algorithm, is indicated.

Memory effects in the relaxation of a confined granular gas

The accuracy of a model to describe the horizontal dynamics of a confined quasi-two-dimensional system of inelastic hard spheres is discussed by comparing its predictions for the relaxation of the temperature in an homogenous system with molecular dynamics simulation results for the original system. A reasonably good agreement is found. Next, the model is used to investigate the peculiarities of the nonlinear evolution of the temperature when the parameter controlling the energy injection is instantaneously changed while the system was relaxing. This can be considered as a non-equilibrium generalization of the Kovacs effect. It is shown that, in the low density limit, the effect can be accurately described by using a simple kinetic theory based on the first Sonine approximation for the one-particle distribution function. Some possible experimental implications are indicated.

The homogeneous steady state of a confined granular gas

The non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and kinetic theory for a model of a confined quasi-two-dimensional gas of inelastic hard spheres is presented. The dynamics of the particles includes an effective mechanism to transfer the energy injected in the vertical direction to the horizontal degrees of freedom. The Enskog approximation is formulated and used as the basis to investigate the temperature and the distribution function of the steady state eventually reached by the system. An exact scaling of the distribution function of the system having implications on the form of its moments is pointed out. The theoretical predictions are compared with numerical results obtained by a particle simulation method, and a good agreement is found.

Rheological effects in the linear response and spontaneous fluctuations of a sheared granular gas

The decay of a small homogeneous perturbation of the temperature of a dilute granular gas in the steady uniform shear flow state is investigated. Using kinetic theory based on the inelastic Boltzmann equation, a closed equation for the decay of the perturbation is derived. The equation involves the generalized shear viscosity of the gas in the time-dependent shear flow state, and therefore it predicts relevant rheological effects beyond the quasi-elastic limit. A good agreement is found when comparing the theory with molecular dynamics simulation results. Moreover, the Onsager postulate on the regression of fluctuations is fulfilled.

Linear hydrodynamics for driven granular gases

We study the dynamics of a granular gas heated by the stochastic thermostat. From a Boltzmann description, we derive the hydrodynamic equations for small perturbations around the stationary state that is reached in the long time limit. Transport coefficients are identified as Green-Kubo formulas obtaining explicit expressions as a function of the inelasticity and the spacial dimension.

Internal energy fluctuations of a granular gas under steady uniform shear flow

The stochastic properties of the total internal energy of a dilute granular gas in the steady uniform shear flow state are investigated. A recent theory formulated for fluctuations about the homogeneous cooling state is extended by analogy with molecular systems. The theoretical predictions are compared with molecular dynamics simulation results. Good agreement is found in the limit of weak inelasticity, while systematic and relevant discrepancies are observed when the inelasticity increases. The origin of this behavior is discussed.

Universal reference state in a driven homogeneous granular gas

We study the dynamics of a homogeneous granular gas heated by a stochastic thermostat, in the low density limit. It is found that, before reaching the stationary regime, the system quickly "forgets" the initial condition and then evolves through a universal state that does not only depend on the dimensionless velocity, but also on the instantaneous temperature, suitably renormalized by its steady state value. We find excellent agreement between the theoretical predictions at Boltzmann equation level for the one-particle distribution function, and Direct Monte Carlo simulations. We conclude that at variance with the homogeneous cooling phenomenology, the velocity statistics should not be envisioned as a single-parameter, but as a two-parameter scaling form, keeping track of the distance to stationarity.

Entropy of continuous mixtures and the measure problem

In its continuous version, the entropy functional measuring the information content of a given probability density may be plagued by a "measure" problem that results from improper weighting of phase space. This issue is addressed considering a generic collision process whereby a large number of particles/agents randomly and repeatedly interact in pairs, with prescribed conservation law(s). We find a sufficient condition under which the stationary single particle distribution function maximizes an entropy-like functional, that is free of the measure problem. This condition amounts to a factorization property of the Jacobian associated to the binary collision law, from which the proper weighting of phase space directly follows.

Fluctuating Navier-Stokes equations for inelastic hard spheres or disks

Starting from the fluctuating Boltzmann equation for smooth inelastic hard spheres or disks, closed equations for the fluctuating hydrodynamic fields to Navier-Stokes order are derived. This requires to derive constitutive relations for both the fluctuating fluxes and the correlations of the random forces. The former are identified as having the same form as the macroscopic average fluxes and involving the same transport coefficients. On the other hand, the random force terms exhibit two peculiarities as compared with their elastic limit for molecular systems. Firstly, they are not white, but have some finite relaxation time. Secondly, their amplitude is not determined by the macroscopic transport coefficients, but involves new coefficients.

Breakdown of hydrodynamics in the inelastic Maxwell model of granular gases

Both the right and left eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the linearized homogeneous Boltzmann equation for inelastic Maxwell molecules corresponding to the hydrodynamic modes are calculated. Also, some non-hydrodynamic modes are identified. It is shown that below a critical value of the parameter characterizing the inelasticity, one of the kinetic modes decays slower than one of the hydrodynamic ones. As a consequence, a closed hydrodynamic description does not exist in that regime. Some implications of this behavior on the formally computed Navier-Stokes transport coefficients are discussed.

Fluctuating hydrodynamics for driven granular gases

We study a granular gas heated by a stochastic thermostat in the dilute limit. Starting from the kinetic equations governing the evolution of the correlation functions, a Boltzmann-Langevin equation is constructed. The spectrum of the corresponding linearized Boltzmann-Fokker-Planck operator is analyzed, and the equation for the fluctuating transverse velocity is derived in the hydrodynamic limit. The noise term (Langevin force) is thus known microscopically and contains two terms: one coming from the thermostat and the other from the fluctuating pressure tensor. At variance with the free cooling situation, the noise is found to be white and its amplitude is evaluated.

Fluctuating hydrodynamics for dilute granular gases

Starting from the kinetic equations for the fluctuations and correlations of a dilute gas of inelastic hard spheres or disks, a Boltzmann-Langevin equation for the one-particle distribution function of the homogeneous cooling state is constructed. This equation is the linear Boltzmann equation with a fluctuating white noise term. Balance equations for the fluctuating hydrodynamic fields are derived. New fluctuating forces appear as compared with the elastic limit. The particular case of the transverse velocity field is investigated in detail. Its fluctuations can be described by means of a Langevin equation, but exhibiting two main differences with the Landau-Lifshitz theory: the noise is not white, and its second moment is not determined by the shear viscosity. This shows that the fluctuation-dissipation relations for molecular fluids do not straightforwardly carry over to inelastic gases. The theoretical predictions are shown to be in good agreement with molecular dynamics simulation results.

Energy fluctuations in a randomly driven granular fluid

We study the behavior of the energy fluctuations in the stationary state of a uniformly heated granular gas. The equation for the one-time two-particle correlation function is derived and the hydrodynamic eigenvalues are identified. Explicit predictions are subsequently worked out for energy fluctuations. The results explain Monte Carlo numerical data reported in previous studies (P. Visco et al, European Physical Journal B 51, 377 (2006)).

Brownian motion under annihilation dynamics

The behavior of a heavy tagged intruder immersed in a bath of particles evolving under ballistic annihilation dynamics is investigated. The Fokker-Planck equation for this system is derived and the peculiarities of the corresponding diffusive behavior are worked out. In the long time limit, the intruder velocity distribution function approaches a Gaussian form, but with a different temperature from its bath counterpart. As a consequence of the continuous decay of particles in the bath, the mean squared displacement increases exponentially in the collision per particle time scale. Analytical results are finally successfully tested against Monte Carlo numerical simulations.

Breakdown of fluctuation-dissipation relations in granular gases

A numerical molecular dynamics experiment measuring the two-time correlation function of the transversal velocity field in the homogeneous cooling state of a granular gas is reported. By measuring the decay rate and the amplitude of the correlations, the accuracy of the Landau-Langevin equation of fluctuating hydrodynamics is checked. The results indicate that although a Langevin approach can be valid, the fluctuation-dissipation relation must be modified, since the viscosity parameter appearing in it differs from the usual hydrodynamic shear viscosity.

Dynamics of Annihilation II: Fluctuations of Global Quantities

We develop a theory for fluctuations and correlations in a gas evolving under ballistic annihilation dynamics. Starting from the hierarchy of equations governing the evolution of microscopic densities in phase space, we subsequently restrict to a regime of spatial homogeneity, and obtain explicit predictions for the fluctuations and time correlation of the total number of particles, total linear momentum and total kinetic energy. Cross-correlations between these quantities are worked out as well. These predictions are successfully tested against Molecular Dynamics and Monte-Carlo simulations. This provides strong support for the theoretical approach developed, including the hydrodynamic treatment of the spectrum of the linearized Boltzmann operator. This article is a companion paper to arXiv:0801.2299 and makes use of the spectral analysis reported there.

Dynamics of Annihilation I : Linearized Boltzmann Equation and Hydrodynamics

We study the non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of a system of freely moving particles, in which binary encounters lead either to an elastic collision or to the disappearance of the pair. Such a system of {\em ballistic annihilation} therefore constantly looses particles. The dynamics of perturbations around the free decay regime is investigated from the spectral properties of the linearized Boltzmann operator, that characterize linear excitations on all time scales. The linearized Boltzmann equation is solved in the hydrodynamic limit by a projection technique, which yields the evolution equations for the relevant coarse-grained fields and expressions for the transport coefficients. We finally present the results of Molecular Dynamics simulations that validate the theoretical predictions.

Scaling and aging in the homogeneous cooling state of a granular fluid of hard particles

The presence of the aging phenomenon in the homogeneous cooling state (HCS) of a granular fluid composed of inelastic hard spheres or disks is investigated. As a consequence of the scaling property of the $N$-particle distribution function, it is obtained that the decay of the normalized two-time correlation functions slows down as the time elapsed since the beginning of the measurement increases. This result is confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations for the particular case of the total energy of the system. The agreement is also quantitative in the low density limit, for which an explicit analytical form of the time correlation function has been derived. The reported results also provide support for the existence of the HCS as a solution of the N-particle Liouville equation.
