Simultaneous study of acoustic and optic phonon scattering of electrons and holes in undoped $\mathrm{GaAs}$/$\mathrm{Al_{x} Ga_{1-x} As}$ heterostructures

The study of phonon coupling in doped semiconductors via electrical transport measurements is challenging due to unwanted temperature-induced effects such as dopant ionisation and parallel conduction. Here, we study phonon scattering in 2D electrons and holes in the $1.6-92.5$K range without the use of extrinsic doping, where both acoustic and longitudinal optic (LO) phonons come into effect. We use undoped GaAs/$\mathrm{Al_{x} Ga_{1-x} As}$ heterostructures and examine the temperature dependence of the sample resistivity, extracting phonon coupling constants and the LO activation energy. Our results are consistent with results obtained through approaches other than transport measurements, and highlight the benefit of this approach for studying electron-phonon and hole-phonon coupling.

Demonstration of an 8D Modulation Format with Reduced Inter-Channel Nonlinearities in a Polarization Multiplexed Coherent System

We demonstrate a polarization-managed 8-dimensional modulation format that is time domain coded to reduce inter-channel nonlinearity. Simulation results show a 2.33 dB improvement in maximum net system margin (NSM) relative to polarization multiplexed (PM)-BPSK, and a 1.0 dB improvement relative to time interleaved return to zero (RZ)-PM-BPSK, for a five channel fill propagating on 20x80 km spans of 90% compensated ELEAF. In contrast to the other modulations considered, the new 8-dimentional (8D) format has negligible sensitivity to the polarization states of the neighboring channels. Laboratory results from High-density WDM (HD-WDM) propagation experiments on a 5000 km dispersion-managed link show a 1 dB improvement in net system margin relative to PM-BPSK.

Pitchfork Bifurcation and Zharov Splitting in Nonlinear Mid-infrared Photothermal Spectroscopy in a liquid crystal using a Quantum Cascade Laser

We report on the mid-infrared nonlinear photothermal spectrum of the neat liquid crystal 4-Octyl-4'-Cyanobiphenyl (8CB) using a tunable Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL). The nonequilibrium steady state characterized by the nonlinear photothermal infrared response undergoes a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation. The bifurcation, observed in heterodyne two-color pump-probe detection, leads to ultrasharp nonlinear infrared spectra similar to those reported in the visible region. A systematic study of the peak splitting as function of absorbed infrared power shows the bifurcation has a critical exponent of 0.5. The surprising observation of an apparently universal critical exponent in a nonequilibrium state is explained using a simple model reminiscent of mean field theory. Apart from the intrinsic interest for nonequilibrium studies, nonlinear photothermal methods lead to a dramatic narrowing of spectral lines, giving rise to a potential new contrast mechanism for the rapidly emerging new field of mid-infrared microspectroscopy using QCLs.

Heat transport of clean spin-ladders coupled to phonons: Umklapp scattering and drag

We study the low-temperature heat transport in clean two-leg spin ladder compounds coupled to three-dimensional phonons. We argue that the very large heat conductivities observed in such systems can be traced back to the existence of approximate symmetries and corresponding weakly violated conservation laws of the effective (gapful) low--energy model, namely pseudo-momenta. Depending on the ratios of spin gaps and Debye energy and on the temperature, the magnetic contribution to the heat conductivity can be positive or negative, and exhibit an activated or anti-activated behavior. In most regimes, the magnetic heat conductivity is dominated by the spin-phonon drag: the excitations of the two subsystems have almost the same drift velocity, and this allows for an estimate of the ratio of the magnetic and phononic contributions to the heat conductivity.

Working Group Report: Neutrino and Astroparticle Physics

This is the report of neutrino and astroparticle physics working group at WHEPP-8. We present the discussions carried out during the workshop on selected topics in the above fields and also indicate progress made subsequently. The neutrino physics subgroup studied the possibilites of constraining neutrino masses, mixing and CPT violation in lepton sector from future experiments. Neutrino mass models in the context of abelian horizontal symmetries, warped extra dimensions and in presence of triplet Higgs were studied. Effect of threshold corrections on radiative magnification of mixing angles was investigated. The astroparticle physics subgroup focused on how various particle physics inputs affect the CMBR fluctuation spectrum, and on brane cosmology. This report also contains an introduction on how to use the publicly available code CMBFAST to calculate the CMBR fluctuations.
