Fundamentals of Scanning Surface Structuring by Ultrashort Laser Pulses: From Electron Diffusion to Final Morphology

Industrial use of ultrashort-pulse surface structuring would significantly increase by an effective utilization of the average laser powers available currently. However, the unexplained degradation of surfaces processed with numerous pulses at high average laser power makes this difficult. Based on a systematic experimental study, the structure formation underlying such surface degradation was investigated. We presented a hierarchical structural formation model that bridges the gap between laser-induced periodic surface structures and surface degradation. Contrary to expectations based on previous research, we observed less structure formation on titanium for high laser fluences. As a possible reason, enhanced electron diffusion with increasing intensity was investigated within the framework of the two-temperature model. Our findings provide a deeper understanding of the microscopic mechanisms involved in surface structuring with ultrashort pulses.

Influence of an external electric field on the energy dissipation at the initial stage of laser ablation

A density-dependent two-temperature model is applied to describe laser excitation and the following relaxation processes of silicon in an external electric field. Two approaches on how to describe the effects of the external electric field are presented. The first approach avoids the buildup of internal electric fields due to charge separation by assuming ambipolar diffusion and adds an additional carrier-pair current. In the second approach, electrons and holes are treated separately to account for charge separation and the resulting shielding of the external electric field inside the material. The two approaches are compared to experimental results. Both the first approach and the experimental results show similar tendencies for optimization of laser ablation in the external electric field.

Magnetic-field assisted laser ablation of silicon

Understanding and manipulation of the laser processing quality during the ablation of solids have crucial importance from fundamental and industrial perspectives. Here we have studied the effect of external magnetic field on the micro-material processing of silicon by ultrashort laser pulses. It was found experimentally that such a field directed along the laser beam improves the quality and efficiency of the material removal. Additionally, we observe that the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) in a multi-pulse regime is affected by the external magnetic field. Our results open a route towards efficient and controllable ultrafast laser micromachining.

Theory for heating of metals assisted by Surface Plasmon Polaritons

We propose a model accounting for plasmons within a two temperature description, to investigate the role of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) in the energy redistribution between laser excited electrons and the lattice, leading to surface restructuring of the material. This energy transfer can lead to the creation of laser induced surface structures in metals illuminated by an ultrashort laser pulse. The Two Temperature Model + Plasmon (TTM+P) equations are constructed by applying perturbation theory on the energy-, momentum- and density conservation equations of free electrons in metals. We consider three subsystems: the lattice, the thermalized electrons and the SPP, subject to an external laser field irradiation. The interference between the laser and SPP fields leads to spatially modulated energy absorption by the electronic system, and, through electron-phonon collisions, periodically shapes the lattice temperature. A numerical analysis is performed on a 1D model for gold. We show the emergence of a periodic modulation of the lattice temperature, which may contribute to laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS).

Plasmonic nature of periodic surface structures following single laser pulse irradiation

Understanding the mechanisms and controlling the possibilities of surface nanostructuring is of crucial interest from fundamental and practical perspectives. Here we report a direct experimental observation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) formed near a predesigned gold step edge following single-pulse femtosecond laser irradiation. A hybrid atomistic-continuum model fully supports experimental observations. We identify two key components of single-pulse LIPSS formation: excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and material reorganization. Our results lay the foundation towards simple and efficient single laser pulse micromachining.

Influence of surface plasmon polaritons on laser energy absorption and structuring of surfaces

The accurate calculation of laser energy absorption during femto- or picosecond laser pulse experiments is very important for the description of the formation of periodic surface structures. On a rough material surface, a crack or a step edge, ultrashort laser pulses can excite surface plasmon polaritons (SPP), i.e. surface plasmons coupled to a laser-electromagnetic wave. The interference of such plasmon wave and the incoming pulse leads to a periodic modulation of the deposited laser energy on the surface of the sample. In the present work, within the frames of a Two Temperature Model we propose the analytical form of the source term, which takes into account SPP excited at a step edge of a dielectric-metal interface upon irradiation of an ultrashort laser pulse at normal incidence. The influence of the laser pulse parameters on energy absorption is quantified for the example of gold. This result can be used for nanophotonic applications and for the theoretical investigation of the evolution of electronic and lattice temperatures and, therefore, of the formation of surfaces with predestined properties under controlled conditions.

Nonlinear photoionization of transparent solids: a nonperturbative theory obeying selection rules

We provide a nonperturbative theory for photoionization of transparent solids. By applying a particular steepest-descent method, we derive analytical expressions for the photoionization rate within the two-band structure model, which consistently account for the $selection$ $rules$ related to the parity of the number of absorbed photons ($odd$ or $even$). We demonstrate the crucial role of the interference of the transition amplitudes (saddle-points), which in the semi-classical limit, can be interpreted in terms of interfering quantum trajectories. Keldysh's foundational work of laser physics [Sov. Phys. JETP 20, 1307 (1965)] disregarded this interference, resulting in the violation of $selection$ $rules$. We provide an improved Keldysh photoionization theory and show its excellent agreement with measurements for the frequency dependence of the two-photon absorption and nonlinear refractive index coefficients in dielectrics.
