Neutron spin structure with polarized deuterons and spectator proton tagging at EIC

The neutron's deep-inelastic structure functions provide essential information for the flavor separation of the nucleon parton densities, the nucleon spin decomposition, and precision studies of QCD phenomena in the flavor-singlet and nonsinglet sectors. Traditional inclusive measurements on nuclear targets are limited by dilution from scattering on protons, Fermi motion and binding effects, final-state interactions, and nuclear shadowing at x << 0.1. An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) would enable next-generation measurements of neutron structure with polarized deuteron beams and detection of forward-moving spectator protons over a wide range of recoil momenta (0 < p_R < several 100 MeV in the nucleus rest frame). The free neutron structure functions could be obtained by extrapolating the measured recoil momentum distributions to the on-shell point. The method eliminates nuclear modifications and can be applied to polarized scattering, as well as to semi-inclusive and exclusive final states. We review the prospects for neutron structure measurements with spectator tagging at EIC, the status of R&D efforts, and the accelerator and detector requirements.

Polarized light ions and spectator nucleon tagging at EIC

An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with suitable forward detection capabilities would enable a unique experimental program of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) from polarized light nuclei (deuterium 2H, helium 3He) with spectator nucleon tagging. Such measurements promise significant advances in several key areas of nuclear physics and QCD: (a) neutron spin structure, by using polarized deuterium and eliminating nuclear effects through on-shell extrapolation in the spectator proton momentum; (b) quark/gluon structure of the bound nucleon at x > 0.1 and the dynamical mechanisms acting on it, by measuring the spectator momentum dependence of nuclear structure functions; (c) coherent effects in QCD, by exploring shadowing in tagged DIS on deuterium at x << 0.1. The JLab MEIC design (CM energy sqrt{s} = 15-50 GeV/nucleon, luminosity ~ 10^{34} cm^{-2} s^{-1}) provides polarized deuterium beams and excellent coverage and resolution for forward spectator tagging. We summarize the physics topics, the detector and beam requirements for spectator tagging, and on-going R&D efforts.

Induced polarization of Λ(1116) in kaon electroproduction

We have measured the induced polarization of the $Λ(1116)$ in the reaction $ep\rightarrow e'K^+Λ$, detecting the scattered $e'$ and $K^+$ in the final state along with the proton from the decay $Λ\rightarrow pπ^-$.The present study used the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), which allowed for a large kinematic acceptance in invariant energy $W$ ($1.6\leq W \leq 2.7$ GeV) and covered the full range of the kaon production angle at an average momentum transfer $Q^2=1.90$ GeV$^2$.In this experiment a 5.50 GeV electron beam was incident upon an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. We have mapped out the $W$ and kaon production angle dependencies of the induced polarization and found striking differences from photoproduction data over most of the kinematic range studied. However, we also found that the induced polarization is essentially $Q^2$ independent in our kinematic domain, suggesting that somewhere below the $Q^2$ covered here there must be a strong $Q^2$ dependence. Along with previously published photo- and electroproduction cross sections and polarization observables, these data are needed for the development of models, such as effective field theories, and as input to coupled-channel analyses that can provide evidence of previously unobserved $s$-channel resonances.

Exclusive $π^0$ electroproduction at $W>2$ GeV with CLAS

Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction ($ep\to e^\prime p^\prime π^0$) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4σ/dtdQ^2dx_Bdϕ_π$ and structure functions $σ_T+εσ_L, σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$ as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector meson rescattering processes is necessary to bring the magnitude of the calculated and measured structure functions into rough agreement. In the handbag framework, there are two independent calculations, both of which appear to roughly explain the magnitude of the structure functions in terms of transversity generalized parton distributions.

Transverse Polarization of $Σ^{+}(1189)$ in Photoproduction on a Hydrogen Target in CLAS

Experimental results on the $Σ^+(1189)$ hyperon transverse polarization in photoproduction on a hydrogen target using the CLAS detector at Jefferson laboratory are presented. The $Σ^+(1189)$ was reconstructed in the exclusive reaction $γ+p\rightarrow K^{0}_{S} + Σ^+(1189)$ via the $Σ^{+} \to p π^{0}$ decay mode. The $K^{0}_S$ was reconstructed in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions with the $π^0$ identified in the missing mass of the detected $pπ^+π^-$ final state. Experimental data were collected in the photon energy range $E_γ$ = 1.0-3.5 GeV ($\sqrt{s}$ range 1.66-2.73 GeV). We observe a large negative polarization of up to 95%. As the mechanism of transverse polarization of hyperons produced in unpolarized photoproduction experiments is still not well understood, these results will help to distinguish between different theoretical models on hyperon production and provide valuable information for the searches of missing baryon resonances.

Deep exclusive $π^+$ electroproduction off the proton at CLAS

The exclusive electroproduction of $π^+$ above the resonance region was studied using the $\rm{CEBAF}$ Large Acceptance Spectrometer ($\rm{CLAS}$) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6 GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of $\rm{CLAS}$, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the $γ^* p \to n π^+$ process in 140 ($Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$) bins: $0.16<x_B<0.58$, 1.6 GeV$^2<$$Q^2$$<4.5$ GeV$^2$ and 0.1 GeV$^2<$$-t$$<5.3$ GeV$^2$. For most bins, the statistical accuracy is on the order of a few percent. Differential cross sections are compared to two theoretical models, based either on hadronic (Regge phenomenology) or on partonic (handbag diagram) degrees of freedom. Both can describe the gross features of the data reasonably well, but differ strongly in their ingredients. If the handbag approach can be validated in this kinematical region, our data contain the interesting potential to experimentally access transversity Generalized Parton Distributions.

Measurement of Exclusive $π^0$ Electroproduction Structure Functions and their Relationship to Transversity GPDs

Exclusive $π^0$ electroproduction at a beam energy of 5.75 GeV has been measured with the Jefferson Lab CLAS spectrometer. Differential cross sections were measured at more than 1800 kinematic values in $Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$, and $ϕ_π$, in the $Q^2$ range from 1.0 to 4.6 GeV$^2$,\ $-t$ up to 2 GeV$^2$, and $x_B$ from 0.1 to 0.58. Structure functions $σ_T +εσ_L, σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$ were extracted as functions of $t$ for each of 17 combinations of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data were compared directly with two handbag-based calculations including both longitudinal and transversity GPDs. Inclusion of only longitudinal GPDs very strongly underestimates $σ_T +εσ_L$ and fails to account for $σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$, while inclusion of transversity GPDs brings the calculations into substantially better agreement with the data. There is very strong sensitivity to the relative contributions of nucleon helicity flip and helicity non-flip processes. The results confirm that exclusive $π^0$ electroproduction offers direct experimental access to the transversity GPDs.

Evidence for the Onset of Color Transparency in $ρ^0$ Electroproduction off Nuclei

We have measured the nuclear transparency of the incoherent diffractive $A(e,e'ρ^0)$ process in $^{12}$C and $^{56}$Fe targets relative to $^2$H using a 5 GeV electron beam. The nuclear transparency, the ratio of the produced $ρ^0$'s on a nucleus relative to deuterium, which is sensitive to $ρA$ interaction, was studied as function of the coherence length ($l_c$), a lifetime of the hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon, and the four-momentum transfer squared ($Q^2$). While the transparency for both $^{12}$C and $^{56}$Fe showed no $l_c$ dependence, a significant $Q^2$ dependence was measured, which is consistent with calculations that included the color transparency effects.

Precise Measurements of Beam Spin Asymmetries in Semi-Inclusive $π^0$ production

We present studies of single-spin asymmetries for neutral pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 5.776 GeV polarized electrons from an unpolarized hydrogen target, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. A substantial $\sin ϕ_h$ amplitude has been measured in the distribution of the cross section asymmetry as a function of the azimuthal angle $ϕ_h$ of the produced neutral pion. The dependence of this amplitude on Bjorken $x$ and on the pion transverse momentum is extracted with significantly higher precision than previous data and is compared to model calculations.

Near-threshold Photoproduction of Phi Mesons from Deuterium

We report the first measurement of the differential cross section on $ϕ$-meson photoproduction from deuterium near the production threshold for a proton using the CLAS detector and a tagged-photon beam in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurement was carried out by a triple coincidence detection of a proton, $K^+$ and $K^-$ near the theoretical production threshold of 1.57 GeV. The extracted differential cross sections $\frac{dσ}{dt}$ for the initial photon energy from 1.65-1.75 GeV are consistent with predictions based on a quasifree mechanism. This experiment establishes a baseline for a future experimental search for an exotic $ϕ$-N bound state from heavier nuclear targets utilizing subthreshold/near-threshold production of $ϕ$ mesons.

Tensor Correlations Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n

We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum, $p_{tot}$. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is very small at low $p_{tot}$ and rises to approximately 0.5 at large $p_{tot}$. This shows the dominance of tensor over central correlations at this relative momentum.

Measurement of Single and Double Spin Asymmetries in Deep Inelastic Pion Electroproduction with a Longitudinally Polarized Target

We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). A significant non-zero $\sin2ϕ$ single spin asymmetry was also observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton. The azimuthal modulations of single spin asymmetries have been measured over a wide kinematic range.

Semi-inclusive and exclusive measurements with EIC: The advantages of lower energies

Exploring the nucleon's sea quark and gluon structure is a prime objective of a future electron-ion collider (EIC). Many of the key questions require accurate differential semi-inclusive (spin/flavor decomposition, orbital motion) and exclusive (spatial distributions of quarks/gluons) DIS measurements in the region 0.01 < x < 0.3 and Q^2 ~ few 10 GeV^2. Such measurements could ideally be performed with a high-luminosity collider of moderate CM energy, s ~ 10^3 GeV^2, and relatively symmetric configuration, e.g. E_e/E_p = 5/30-60 GeV. Specific examples are presented, showing the advantages of this setup (angular/energy distribution of final-state particles, large-x coverage) compared to typical high-energy colliders.

Light-ion production in the interaction of 96 MeV neutrons with carbon

Double-differential cross sections for light-ion (p, d, t, 3He and alpha) production in carbon induced by 96 MeV neutrons have been measured at eight laboratory angles from 20 degrees to 160 degrees in steps of 20 degrees. Experimental techniques are presented as well as procedures for data taking and data reduction. Deduced energy-differential, angle-differential and production cross sections are reported. Experimental cross sections are compared with theoretical reaction model calculations and experimental data in the literature. The measured particle data show marked discrepancies from the results of the model calculations in spectral shape and magnitude. The measured production cross sections for protons, deuterons, tritons, 3He, and alpha particles support the trends suggested by data at lower energies.

Measurement of the Absolute Differential Cross Section for np Elastic Scattering at 194 MeV

A tagged medium-energy neutron beam has been used in a precise measurement of the absolute differential cross section for np back-scattering. The results resolve significant discrepancies within the np database concerning the angular dependence in this regime. The experiment has determined the absolute normalization with 1.5% uncertainty, suitable to verify constraints of supposedly comparable precision that arise from the rest of the database in partial wave analyses. The analysis procedures, especially those associated with evaluation of systematic errors in the experiment, are described in detail so that systematic uncertainties may be included in a reasonable way in subsequent partial wave analysis fits incorporating the present results.

Light-ion production in the interaction of 96 MeV neutrons with oxygen

Double-differential cross sections for light-ion (p, d, t, He-3 and alpha) production in oxygen, induced by 96 MeV neutrons are reported. Energy spectra are measured at eight laboratory angles from 20 degrees to 160 degrees in steps of 20 degrees. Procedures for data taking and data reduction are presented. Deduced energy-differential and production cross sections are reported. Experimental cross sections are compared to theoretical reaction model calculations and experimental data at lower neutron energies in the literature. The measured proton data agree reasonably well with the results of the model calculations, whereas the agreement for the other particles is less convincing. The measured production cross sections for protons, deuterons, tritons and alpha particles support the trends suggested by data at lower energies.

Measurement of the Absolute np Scattering Differential Cross Section at 194 MeV

We describe a double-scattering experiment with a novel tagged neutron beam to measure differential cross sections for np back-scattering to better than 2% absolute precision. The measurement focuses on angles and energies where the cross section magnitude and angle-dependence constrain the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant, but existing data show serious discrepancies among themselves and with energy-dependent partial wave analyses (PWA). The present results are in good accord with the PWA, but deviate systematically from other recent measurements.
