Elementary Quantum Mechanics in a Space-time Lattice

Studies of quantum fields and gravity suggest the existence of a minimal length, such as Planck length \cite{Floratos,Kempf}. It is natural to ask how the existence of a minimal length may modify the results in elementary quantum mechanics (QM) problems familiar to us \cite{Gasiorowicz}. In this paper we address a simple problem from elementary non-relativistic quantum mechanics, called "particle in a box", where the usual continuum (1+1)-space-time is supplanted by a space-time lattice. Our lattice consists of a grid of $λ_0 \times τ_0 $ rectangles, where $λ_0$, the lattice parameter, is a fundamental length (say Planck length) and, we take $τ_0$ to be equal to $λ_0/c$. The corresponding Schrodinger equation becomes a difference equation, the solution of which yields the $q$-eigenfunctions and $q$-eigenvalues of the energy operator as a function of $λ_0 $. The $q$-eigenfunctions form an orthonormal set and both $q$-eigenfunctions and $q$-eigenvalues reduce to continuum solutions as $ λ_0 \rightarrow 0 .$ The corrections to eigenvalues because of the assumed lattice is shown to be $O(λ_0^2).$ We then compute the uncertainties in position and momentum, $Δx, Δp$ for the box problem and study the consequent modification of Heisenberg uncertainty relation due to the assumption of space-time lattice, in contrast to modifications suggested by other investigations such as \cite{Floratos}.

Thermostatistics of deformed bosons and fermions

Based on the q-deformed oscillator algebra, we study the behavior of the mean occupation number and its analogies with intermediate statistics and we obtain an expression in terms of an infinite continued fraction, thus clarifying successive approximations. In this framework, we study the thermostatistics of q-deformed bosons and fermions and show that thermodynamics can be built on the formalism of q-calculus. The entire structure of thermodynamics is preserved if ordinary derivatives are replaced by the use of an appropriate Jackson derivative and q-integral. Moreover, we derive the most important thermodynamic functions and we study the q-boson and q-fermion ideal gas in the thermodynamic limit.

Intermediate statistics as a consequence of deformed algebra

We present a formulation of the deformed oscillator algebra which leads to intermediate statistics as a continuous interpolation between the Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. It is deduced that a generalized permutation or exchange symmetry leads to the introduction of the basic number and it is then established that this in turn leads to the deformed algebra of oscillators. We obtain the mean occupation number describing the particles obeying intermediate statistics which thus establishes the interpolating statistics and describe boson like and fermion like particles obeying intermediate statistics. We also obtain an expression for the mean occupation number in terms of an infinite continued fraction, thus clarifying successive approximations.

Free Particle Eigenfunctions of Schrodinger Equation with Quantized Space-time

It is well-known that the coordinate as a continuous variable, consisting of a set of all points between 0 and $L$ contradicts the observability of measurement. In other words there might exist a fundamental length in nature, such as the Planck length $λ_P$, so that it is not possible to measure a position coordinate with accuracy smaller than this fundamental length. It is therefore necessary to investigate the formulation of quantum mechanics using only discrete variables as coordinates. To investigate all of quantum mechanics or any branch of physics from this approach is of course a daunting task and thus it is worthwhile to consider a specific simple problem in order to formulate the basic ideas. In this note we compare the solutions of Schrodinger equation for one-dimensional free particle under the usual space-time continuum with those that are obtained when space-time is assumed to be quantized using a simple model. For this purpose, we replace the derivatives occurring in Schrodinger equation with the corresponding discrete derivatives. We compute the probability density (and the probability current) under the two scenarios; they turn out to be quite different in the two cases. We also obtain the operator identity for the commutator $[p,x]^q$ under the assumption of quantized space-time and contrast it with the usual commutator $[p,x]$.

Interacting particles system revisited in the framework of the q-deformed algebra

We discuss the possibility of interpreting a q-deformed non-interacting system as incorporating the effects of interactions among its particles. This can be accomplished, for instance, in an ensemble of $q$-Bosons by means of the virial expansion of a real gas in powers of the deformed parameter. The lowest order virial coefficient reduces to the case of the standard, non-interacting Bose gas, while the higher order virial coefficients contain effects arising from the interaction. The same picture can be drawn in a quantum mechanical system where it is shown that the q-deformed momentum can be expanded in a series contains high-order powers of the standard quantum phase-space variables. Motivated by this result, we introduce, in the classical framework, a transformation relating the momentum of a free system with the momentum of an interacting system. It is shown that the canonical quantization applied to the interacting system imply a q-deformed quantization for the free system.

Deformed quantum statistics in two-dimensions

It is known from the early work of May in 1964 that ideal Bose gas do not exhibit condensation phenomenon in two dimensions. On the other hand, it is also known that the thermostatistics arising from q-deformed oscillator algebra has no connection with the spatial dimensions of the system. Our recent work concerns the study of important thermodynamic functions such as the entropy, occupation number, internal energy and specific heat in ordinary three spatial dimensions, where we established that such thermostatistics is developed by consistently replacing the ordinary thermodynamic derivatives by the Jackson derivatives. The thermostatistics of q-deformed bosons and fermions in two spatial dimensions is an unresolved question and that is the subject of this investigation. We study the principal thermodynamic functions of both bosons and fermions in the two dimensional q-deformed formalism and we find that, different from the standard case, the specific heat of q-boson and q-fermion ideal gas, at fixed temperature and number of particle, are no longer identical.

Basic-deformed thermostatistics

Starting from the basic-exponential, a q-deformed version of the exponential function established in the framework of the basic-hypergeometric series, we present a possible formulation of a generalized statistical mechanics. In a q-nonuniform lattice we introduce the basic-entropy related to the basic-exponential by means of a q-variational principle. Remarkably, this distribution exhibits a natural cut-off in the energy spectrum. This fact, already encountered in other formulations of generalized statistical mechanics, is expected to be relevant to the applications of the theory to those systems governed by long-range interactions. By employing the q-calculus, it is shown that the standard thermodynamic functional relationships are preserved, mimicking, in this way, the mathematical structure of the ordinary thermostatistics which is recovered in the q=1 limit.

Generalized Heisenberg relation and Quantum Harmonic Oscillators

We study the consequences of the generalized Heisenberg uncertainty relation which admits a minimal uncertainty in length such as the case in a theory of quantum gravity. In particular, the theory of quantum harmonic oscillators arising from such a generalized uncertainty relation is examined. We demonstrate that all the standard properties of the quantum harmonic oscillators prevail when we employ a generalized momentum. We also show that quantum electrodynamics and coherent photon states can be described in the familiar standard manner despite the generalized uncertainty principle.

Classical and quantum q-deformed physical systems

On the basis of the non-commutative q-calculus, we investigate a q-deformation of the classical Poisson bracket in order to formulate a generalized q-deformed dynamics in the classical regime. The obtained q-deformed Poisson bracket appears invariant under the action of the q-symplectic group of transformations. In this framework we introduce the q-deformed Hamilton's equations and we derive the evolution equation for some simple q-deformed mechanical systems governed by a scalar potential dependent only on the coordinate variable. It appears that the q-deformed Hamiltonian, which is the generator of the equation of motion, is generally not conserved in time but, in correspondence, a new constant of motion is generated. Finally, by following the standard canonical quantization rule, we compare the well known q-deformed Heisenberg algebra with the algebra generated by the q-deformed Poisson bracket.

q-deformed Fermions

This is a study of $q$-Fermions arising from a q-deformed algebra of harmonic oscillators. Two distinct algebras will be investigated. Employing the first algebra, the Fock states are constructed for the generalized Fermions obeying Pauli exclusion principle. The distribution function and other thermodynamic properties such as the internal energy and entropy are derived. Another generalization of fermions from a different q-deformed algebra is investigated which deals with q-fermions not obeying the exclusion principle. Fock states are constructed for this system. The basic numbers appropriate for this system are determined as a direct consequence of the algebra. We also establish the Jackson Derivative, which is required for the q-calculus needed to describe these generalized Fermions.

Classical q-deformed dynamics

On the basis of the quantum q-oscillator algebra in the framework of quantum groups and non-commutative q-differential calculus, we investigate a possible q-deformation of the classical Poisson bracket in order to extend a generalized q-deformed dynamics in the classical regime. In this framework, classical q-deformed kinetic equations, Kramers and Fokker-Planck equations, are also studied. q-deformed structures and generalized thermodynamics

On the basis of the recently proposed formalism [A. Lavagno and P.N. Swamy, Phys. Rev. E 65, 036101 (2002)], we show that the realization of the thermostatistics of q-deformed algebra can be built on the formalism of q-calculus. It is found that the entire structure of thermodynamics is preserved if we use an appropriate Jackson derivative instead of the ordinary thermodynamic derivative. Furthermore, in analogy with the quantum q-oscillator algebra, we also investigate a possible q-deformation of the classical Poisson bracket in order to extend a generalized q-deformed dynamics in the classical regime.

Interpolating statistics realized as Deformed Harmonic Oscillators

The idea that a system obeying interpolating statistics can be described by a deformed oscillator algebra has been an outstanding issue. This original concept introduced long ago by Greenberg is the motivation for this investigation. We establish that a q-deformed algebra can be used to describe the statistics of particles (anyons) interpolating continuously between Bose and Fermi statistics, i.e., fractional statistics. We show that the generalized intermediate statistics splits into the Boson-like and Fermion-like regimes, each described by a unique oscillator algebra. The B-anyon thermostatistics is described by employing the q-calculus based on the Jackson derivative but the F-anyons are described by ordinary derivatives of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic functions of both B-anyons and F-anyons are determined and examined.

Transverse Radiation realized as Deformed Harmonic Oscillators

We present a theory of quantized radiation fields described in terms of q-deformed harmonic oscillators. The creation and annihilation operators satisfy deformed commutation relations and the Fock space of states is constructed in this formalism in terms of basic numbers familiar from the theory of quantum groups. Expressions for the Hamiltonian and momentum arising from deformed Heisenberg relations are obtained and their consequences investigated. The energy momentum properties of the vacuum state are studied. The commutation relation for the fields is shown to involve polarization sums more intricate than those encountered in standard quantum electrodynamics, thus requiring explicit representations of polarization vectors. The electric field commutation rules are investigated under simplifying assumptions of polarization states, and the commutator in the deformed theory in this case is shown to be reminiscent of the coordinate-momentum uncertainty relation in the theory of q-deformed quantum oscillators.

Detailed Balance and Intermediate Statistics

We present a theory of particles, obeying intermediate statistics ("anyons"), interpolating between Bosons and Fermions, based on the principle of Detailed Balance. It is demonstrated that the scattering probabilities of identical particles can be expressed in terms of the basic numbers, which arise naturally and logically in this theory. A transcendental equation determining the distribution function of anyons is obtained in terms of the statistics parameter, whose limiting values 0 and 1 correspond to Bosons and Fermions respectively. The distribution function is determined as a power series involving the Boltzmann factor and the statistics parameter and we also express the distribution function as an infinite continued fraction. The last form enables one to develop approximate forms for the distribution function, with the first approximant agreeing with our earlier investigation.

Deformed Heisenberg algebra: origin of q-calculus

The intimate connection between q-deformed Heisenberg uncertainty relation and the Jackson derivative based on q-basic numbers has been noted in the literature. The purpose of this work is to establish this connection in a clear and self-consistent formulation and to show explicitly how the Jackson derivative arises naturally. We utilize a holomorphic representation to arrive at the correct algebra to describe q-deformed bosons. We investigate the algebra of q-fermions and point out how different it is from the theory of q-bosons. We show that the holomorphic representation for q-fermions is indeed feasible in the framework of the theory of generalized fermions. We also examine several different q-algebras in the context of the modified Heisenberg equation of motion.

Generalized thermodynamics of q-deformed bosons and fermions

We study the thermostatistics of q-deformed bosons and fermions obeying the symmetric algebra and show that it can be built on the formalism of q-calculus. The entire structure of thermodynamics is preserved if ordinary derivatives are replaced by an appropriate Jackson derivative. In this framework, we derive the most important thermodynamic functions describing the q-boson and q-fermion ideal gases in the thermodynamic limit. We also investigate the semi-classical limit and the low temperature regime and demonstrate that the nature of the q-deformation gives rise to pure quantum statistical effects stronger than undeformed boson and fermion particles.
