Density-Functional Theory of Quantum Freezing: Sensitivity to Liquid-State Structure and Statistics

Density-functional theory is applied to compute the ground-state energies of quantum hard-sphere solids. The modified weighted-density approximation is used to map both the Bose and the Fermi solid onto a corresponding uniform Bose liquid, assuming negligible exchange for the Fermi solid. The required liquid-state input data are obtained from a paired phonon analysis and the Feynman approximation, connecting the static structure factor and the linear response function. The Fermi liquid is treated by the Wu-Feenberg cluster expansion, which approximately accounts for the effects of antisymmetry. Liquid-solid transitions for both systems are obtained with no adjustment of input data. Limited quantitative agreement with simulation indicates a need for further improvement of the liquid-state input through practical alternatives to the Feynman approximation.

Quantum Fluctuations Driven Orientational Disordering: A Finite-Size Scaling Study

The orientational ordering transition is investigated in the quantum generalization of the anisotropic-planar-rotor model in the low temperature regime. The phase diagram of the model is first analyzed within the mean-field approximation. This predicts at $T=0$ a phase transition from the ordered to the disordered state when the strength of quantum fluctuations, characterized by the rotational constant $Θ$, exceeds a critical value $Θ_{\rm c}^{MF}$. As a function of temperature, mean-field theory predicts a range of values of $Θ$ where the system develops long-range order upon cooling, but enters again into a disordered state at sufficiently low temperatures (reentrance). The model is further studied by means of path integral Monte Carlo simulations in combination with finite-size scaling techniques, concentrating on the region of parameter space where reentrance is predicted to occur. The phase diagram determined from the simulations does not seem to exhibit reentrant behavior; at intermediate temperatures a pronounced increase of short-range order is observed rather than a genuine long-range order.

Tricritical universality in a two-dimensional spin fluid

Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the tricritical point properties of a 2d spin fluid. Measurements of the scaling operator distributions are employed in conjunction with a finite-size scaling analysis to locate the tricritical point and determine the directions of the relevant scaling fields and their associated tricritical exponents. The scaling operator distributions and exponents are shown to match quantitatively those of the 2d Blume-Capel model, confirming that both models belong to the same universality class. Mean-field calculations of the tricritical point properties are also compared with the simulation measurements.

Irreversible Multilayer Adsorption

Random sequential adsorption (RSA) models have been studied due to their relevance to deposition processes on surfaces. The depositing particles are represented by hard-core extended objects; they are not allowed to overlap. Numerical Monte Carlo studies and analytical considerations are reported for 1D and 2D models of multilayer adsorption processes. Deposition without screening is investigated, in certain models the density may actually increase away from the substrate. Analytical studies of the late stage coverage behavior show the crossover from exponential time dependence for the lattice case to the power law behavior in the continuum deposition. 2D lattice and continuum simulations rule out some "exact" conjectures for the jamming coverage. For the deposition of dimers on a 1D lattice with diffusional relaxation we find that the limiting coverage (100%) is approached according to the ~1/t**0.5 power-law preceded, for fast diffusion, by the mean-field crossover regime with the intermediate ~1/t behavior. In case of k-mer deposition (k>3) with diffusion the void fraction decreases according to the power-law t**[-1/(k-1)]. In the case of RSA of lattice hard squares in 2D with diffusional relaxation the approach to the full coverage is ~t**(-0.5).

Collective Effects in Random Sequential Adsorption of Diffusing Hard Squares

We study by Monte Carlo computer simulations random sequential adsorption (RSA) with diffusional relaxation, of lattice hard squares in two dimensions. While for RSA without diffusion the coverage approaches its maximum jamming value (large-time fractional coverage) exponentially, added diffusion allows the deposition process to proceed to the full coverage. The approach to the full coverage is consistent with the t**(-1/2) power law reminiscent of the equilibrium cluster coarsening in models with nonconserved order-parameter dynamics.
