Deep optical spectroscopy of extended Lyman alpha emission around three radio-quiet z=4.5 quasars

We report the first results of a spectroscopic search for Lyman alpha, envelopes around three z=4.5 radio-quiet quasars. Our observational strategy uses the FORS2 spectrograph attached to the UT1 of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in the multi-slit mode. This allows us to observe simultaneously the quasars and several PSF stars. The spectra of the latter are used to remove the point-like quasar from the data, and to unveil the faint underlying Lyman alpha, envelopes associated with the quasars with unprecedented depth. We clearly detect an envelope around two of the three quasars. These envelopes measure respectively 10" and 13" in extent (i.e. 67 kpc and 87 kpc). This is 5 to 10 times larger than predicted by the models of Haiman & Rees (2001) and up to 100 times fainter. Our observations better agree with models involing a clumpy envelope as in Alam & Miralda-Escude (2002) or Chelouche et al. (2008). We find that the brighter quasars also have the brighter envelopes but that the extend of the envelopes does not depend on the quasar luminosity. Although our results are based on only two objects with a detected Lyman alpha, envelope, the quality of the spatial deblending of the spectra lends considerable hope to estimate the luminosity function and surface brightness profiles of high redshift Lyman alpha, envelopes down to F= 2-3 10^{-21} erg/s/cm^2/A. We find that the best strategy to carry out such a project is to obtain both narrow-band images and deep slit-spectra.

Evolution of Magnetic Fields in Stars Across the Upper Main Sequence: II. Observed distribution of the magnetic field geometry

We re-discuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequence magnetic stars using a sample of Ap and Bp stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and definitely determined longitudinal magnetic fields. We confirm our previous results obtained from the study of Ap and Bp stars with accurate measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus and mean quadratic magnetic fields that magnetic stars of mass M < 3 M_sun are concentrated towards the centre of the main-sequence band. In contrast, stars with masses M > 3 M_sun seem to be concentrated closer to the ZAMS. The study of a few known members of nearby open clusters with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes confirms these conclusions. Stronger magnetic fields tend to be found in hotter, younger and more massive stars, as well as in stars with shorter rotation periods. No evidence is found for any loss of angular momentum during the main-sequence life. The magnetic flux remains constant over the stellar life time on the main sequence. An excess of stars with large obliquities beta is detected in both higher and lower mass stars. The obliquity angle distribution as inferred from the distribution of r-values appears random at the time magnetic stars become observable on the H-R diagram. After quite a short time spent on the main sequence, the obliquity angle beta tends to reach values close to either 90 deg or 0 deg for M < 3 M_sun. The evolution of the obliquity angle beta seems to be somewhat different for low and high mass stars. While we find a strong hint for an increase of beta with the elapsed time on the main sequence for stars with M > 3 M_sun, no similar trend is found for stars with M < 3 M_sun. However, the predominance of high values of beta at advanced ages in these stars is notable.

On the co-existence of chemically peculiar Bp stars, slowly pulsating B stars and constant B stars in the same part of the H-R diagram

Aims. In order to better model massive B-type stars, we need to understand the physical processes taking place in slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars, chemically peculiar Bp stars, and non-pulsating normal B stars co-existing in the same part of the H-R diagram. Methods. We carry out a comparative study between samples of confirmed and well-studied SPB stars and a sample of well-studied Bp stars with known periods and magnetic field strengths. We determine their evolutionary state using accurate HIPPARCOS parallaxes and Geneva photometry. We discuss the occurrence and strengths of magnetic fields as well as the occurrence of stellar pulsation among both groups. Further, we make a comparison of Geneva photometric variability for both kinds of stars. Results. The group of Bp stars is significantly younger than the group of SPB stars. Longitudinal magnetic fields in SPB stars are weaker than those of Bp stars, suggesting that the magnetic field strength is an important factor for B type stars to become chemically peculiar. The strongest magnetic fields appear in young Bp stars, indicating a magnetic field decay in stars at advanced ages. Rotation periods of Bp and pulsation periods of SPB stars are of the same order and the behaviour of Geneva photometric variability of some Bp stars cannot be distinguished from the variability of SPB stars, illustrating the difficulty to interpret the observed variability of the order of days for B-type stars. We consider the possibility that pulsation could be responsible for the variability among chemically peculiar stars. In particular, we show that a non-linear pulsation model is not excluded by photometry for the Bp star HD175362.

VLT/GIRAFFE spectroscopic observations of the metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052E

We present two-dimensional spectroscopy of the extremely metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0335-052E aiming to studyphysical conditions, element abundances and kinematical properties of the ionised gas in this galaxy. Observations were obtained in the spectral range 3620-9400A with the imaging spectrograph GIRAFFE installed on the UT2 of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). These observations are the first ones carried out so far with GIRAFFE in the ARGUS mode which allows to obtain simultaneously 308 spectra covering a 11.4"x7.3" region. We produced images of SBS 0335-052E in the continuum and in emission lines of different stages of excitation. We find that while the maximum of emission in the majority of lines, including the strong lines Hbeta 4861A, Halpha 6563A, [OIII] 4363,5007A, [OII] 3726,3729A, coincides with the youngest south-eastern star clusters 1 and 2, the emission of HeII 4686A line is offset to the more evolved north-west clusters 4,5. This suggests that hard ionising radiation responsible for the HeII 4686A emission is not related to the most massive youngest stars, but rather is connected with fast radiative shocks. This conclusion is supported by the kinematical properties of the ionised gas from the different emission lines as the velocity dispersion in the HeII 4686A line is systematically higher, by ~50%-100%, than that in other lines. The variations of the emission line profiles suggest the presence of an ionised gas outflow in the direction perpendicular to the galaxy disk. (abridged)

Evolution of magnetic fields in stars across the upper main sequence: I. Catalogue of magnetic field measurements with FORS1 at the VLT

To properly understand the physics of Ap and Bp stars it is particularly important to identify the origin of their magnetic fields. For that, an accurate knowledge of the evolutionary state of stars that have a measured magnetic field is an important diagnostic. Previous results based on a small and possibly biased sample suggest that the distribution of magnetic stars with mass below 3 M_sun in the H-R diagram differs from that of normal stars in the same mass range (Hubrig et al. 2000). In contrast, higher mass magnetic Bp stars may well occupy the whole main-sequence width (Hubrig, Schoeller & North 2005). In order to rediscuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequence magnetic stars, we define a larger and bias-free sample of Ap and Bp stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and reliably determined longitudinal magnetic fields. We used FORS1 at the VLT in its spectropolarimetric mode to measure the magnetic field in chemically peculiar stars where it was unknown or poorly known as yet. In this first paper we present our results of the mean longitudinal magnetic field measurements in 136 stars. Our sample consists of 105 Ap and Bp stars, two PGa stars, 17 HgMn stars, three normal stars, and nine SPB stars. A magnetic field was for the first time detected in 57 Ap and Bp stars, in four HgMn stars, one PGa star, one normal B-type star and four SPB stars.

Does rotation of B stars depend on metallicity? preliminary results from GIRAFFE spectra

We show the vsini distribution of main sequence B stars in sites of various metallicities, in the absolute magnitude range -3.34 < Mv < -2.17. These include Galactic stars in the field measured by Abt et al. (2002), members of the h & chi Per open clusters measured by North et al. (2004), and five fields in the SMC and LMC measured at ESO Paranal with the FLAMES-GIRAFFE spectrograph, within the Geneva-Lausanne guaranteed time. Following the suggestion by Maeder et al. (1999), we do find a higher rate of rapid rotators in the Magellanic Clouds than in the Galaxy, but the vsini distribution is the same in the LMC and in the SMC in spite of their very different metallicities.

AO Velorum: a young quadruple system with a ZAMS eclipsing BpSi primary

Using recent spectroscopic observations, we show that the triple system AO Vel with an eclipsing BpSi primary is in fact a remarkable quadruple system formed by two double-lined spectroscopic binaries with components close to the ZAMS. All available data have been reanalyzed to derive proper orbital parameters for both binary systems and to calculate absolute parameters of the eclipsing system. For the first time, direct determination of the radius and the mass have been obtained for a BpSi star. The study of the physical parameters of this unique system is especially important since it can be used as a test of evolutionary models for very young stars of intermediate mass.

HD 178892 - a cool Ap star with extremely strong magnetic field

We report a discovery of the Zeeman resolved spectral lines, corresponding to the extremely large magnetic field modulus =17.5 kG, in the cool Ap star HD 178892. The mean longitudinal field of this star reaches 7.5 kG, and its rotational modulation implies the strength of the dipolar magnetic component Bp>=23 kG. We have revised rotation period of the star using the All Sky Automated Survey photometry and determined P=8.2478 d. Rotation phases of the magnetic and photometric maxima of the star coincide with each other. We obtained Geneva photometric observation of HD 178892 and estimated Teff=7700+/-250 K using photometry and the hydrogen Balmer lines. Preliminary abundance analysis reveals abundance pattern typical of rapidly oscillating Ap stars.

Binaries with total eclipses in the LMC: potential targets for spectroscopy

35 Eclipsing binaries presenting unambiguous total eclipses were selected from a subsample of the list of Wyrzykowski et al. (2003). The photometric elements are given for the I curve in DiA photometry, as well as approximate Teff and masses of the components. The interest of these systems is stressed in view of future spectroscopic observations.

Lithium in field Am and normal A-F-type stars

Preliminary abundances of lithium and a few other elements have been obtained for 31 field Am stars with good Hipparcos parallaxes, as well as for 36 normal A and F stars. Radial and projected rotational velocities were determined as well. We examine the Li abundance as a function of the stellar parameters: for normal stars, it is clearly bimodal for Teff < 7500 K, while Am-Fm stars are all somewhat Li-deficient in this range. The most Li-deficient stars - either Am or normal - tend to be at least slightly evolved, but the reverse is not true.

Evolution of magnetic fields in stars across the upper main sequence

To properly understand the physics of upper main sequence stars it is particularly important to identify the origin of their magnetic fields. Recently, we confirmed that magnetic fields appear in Ap stars of mass below 3 M_sun only if they have already completed at least approximately 30% of their main-sequence lifetime. The absence of stars with strong magnetic fields close to the ZAMS might be seen as an argument against the fossil field theories. Here we present the results of our recent magnetic survey with FORS1 at the VLT in polarimetric mode of a sample of A, B and Herbig Ae stars with previously undetected magnetic fields and briefly discuss their significance for our understanding of the origin of the magnetic fields in intermediate mass stars.

Magnetic fields of B and Herbig Ae stars measured with FORS1 at the VLT

We present the results of a magnetic survey with FORS1 in polarimetric mode of a sample of B and Herbig Ae stars with previously undetected magnetic fields. For the first time a mean longitudinal magnetic field at a level higher than 3 sigma has been detected in one normal B star, two HgMn stars, one PGa star and four SPB stars. The observations of the three Herbig Ae stars (also known as Vega-like stars) reveal a definite longitudinal magnetic field in the star HD139614 at 4.8 sigma level: =-450+-93 G. This is the largest magnetic field ever diagnosed for a Herbig Ae star. A hint of a magnetic field is found in the other two stars, HD144432 and HD144668, for which magnetic fields are measured at the ~1.6 sigma and ~2.5 sigma level respectively.

Evolution of Magnetic Fields in Stars Across the Upper Main Sequence: Results from Recent Measurements with FORS 1 at the VLT

We rediscuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequence magnetic stars using a sample of Ap and Bp stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and definitely determined longitudinal magnetic fields. FORS1 at the VLT in spectropolarimetric mode has been used to carry out a systematic search for magnetic fields in chemically peculiar stars whose magnetic field has never been studied before. We confirm our previous results obtained from the study of Ap and Bp stars with accurate measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus and mean quadratic magnetic fields that the distribution of the magnetic stars of mass below 3 M_o differs significantly from that of normal stars in the same temperature range. Normal A stars occupy the whole width of the main sequence, without a gap, whereas magnetic stars are concentrated towards the centre of the main-sequence band. We show that, in contrast, higher mass magnetic Bp stars may well occupy the whole main-sequence width.

A purely geometric distance to the binary star Atlas, a member of the Pleiades

We present radial velocity and new interferometric measurements of the double star Atlas, which permit, with the addition of published interferometric data, to precisely derive the orbital parameters of the binary system and the masses of the components. The derived semi-major axis, compared with its measured angular size, allows to determine a distance to Atlas of 132+-4 pc in a purely geometrical way. Under the assumption that the location of Atlas is representative of the average distance of the cluster, we confirm the distance value generally obtained through main sequence fitting, in contradiction with the early Hipparcos result (118.3+-3.5 pc).

Palomar 13: a velocity dispersion inflated by binaries ?

Recently, combining radial velocities from Keck/HIRES echelle spectra with published proper motion membership probabilities, Cote et al (2002) observed a sample of 21 stars, probable members of Palomar 13, a globular cluster in the Galactic halo. Their projected velocity dispersion sigma_p = 2.2 +/-0.4 km/s gives a mass-to-light ratio M/L_V = 40 +24/-17, about one order of magnitude larger than the usual estimate for globular clusters. We present here radial velocities measured from three different CCD frames of commissioning observations obtained with the new ESO/VLT instrument FLAMES (Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph). From these data, now publicly available, we measure the homogeneous radial velocities of eight probable members of this globular cluster. A new projected velocity dispersion sigma_p = 0.6-0.9 +/-0.3 km/s implies Palomar 13 mass-to-light ratio M/L_V = 3-7, similar to the usual value for globular clusters. We discuss briefly the two most obvious reasons for the previous unusual mass-to-light ratio finding: binaries, now clearly detected, and more homogeneous data from the multi-fibre FLAMES spectrograph.

Stellar abundance patterns. What is the possible level of completeness today ?

We discuss the way of increasing of the number of chemical elements, investigated in stellar spectra. We can reach it by using spectrum synthesis method, new atomic data and observation of stellar spectra with resolution comparable to solar spectral atlases. We show two examples of this kind researches. The first is the implementation of new atomic data to well known Przybylski's star. We show that the number of spectral lines, which can be identificated in the spectrum of this star can be significantly higher. The second example is the investigation of zeta Cyg. We found the abundances of 51 elements in the atmosphere of this mild barium star.

The spectrum of the roAp star HD 101065(Przybylski's star) in the Li I 6708 A spectral region

We carried out a detailed analysis of spectra of the unique roAp star HD 101065 (Przybylski's star) near the resonance doublet Li I 6708 A, using a most complete line list including all possible transitions between REE levels of NIST database. Our model calculations were performed under two assumptions: blend of Li and REE lines, and blend of REE lines only. They prove that Li lines are present in the range 6707.72-6708.02 AA, and that the resulting Li abundance is 3.1 dex (in the scale log N(H) = 12.0, while the isotopic ratio 6Li/7Li is near to 0.3.
