Fermi 1D quantum gas: Luttinger liquid approach and spin-charge separation

We discuss the properties of quasi-1D quantum gases of fermionic atoms using the Luttinger liquid theory, including the presence of an optical lattice and of a longitudinal trapping potential. We analyze in particular the nature and manifestations of spin-charge separation, where in the case of atoms ``spin'' and ``charge'' refers to two internal atomic states and the atomic mass density, respectively.

Spin-charge separation in ultra-cold quantum gases

We investigate the physical properties of quasi-1D quantum gases of fermion atoms confined in harmonic traps. Using the fact that for a homogeneous gas, the low energy properties are exactly described by a Luttinger model, we analyze the nature and manifestations of the spin-charge separation. Finally we discuss the necessary physical conditions and experimental limitations confronting possible experimental implementations.

Surface modes and critical velocity in trapped Bose-condensates

We propose the novel mechanism leading to superfluidity breakdown in dilute Bose-condensed gases. We discuss the properties and highlight the role played by surface excitations in trapped condensates. We show that the critical velocity measured in recent experiments is nothing else but the critical velocity associated with the spontaneous creation of surface modes. The latter turns out to be larger than that found by the analysis of a superflow stability with respect to vortex nucleation.

Dissipative dynamics of vortex arrays in trapped Bose-condensed gases: neutron stars physics on $μ$K scale

We develop a theory of dissipative dynamics of large vortex arrays in trapped Bose-condensed gases. We show that in a static trap the interaction of the vortex array with thermal excitations leads to a non-exponential decay of the vortex structure, and the characteristic lifetime depends on the initial density of vortices. Drawing an analogy with physics of pulsar glitches, we propose an experiment which employs the heating of the thermal cloud in the course of the decay of the vortex array as a tool for a non-destructive study of the vortex dynamics.

Critical velocity in cylindrical Bose-Einstein condensates

We describe a dramatic decrease of the critical velocity in elongated cylindrical Bose-Einstein condensates which originates from the non-uniform character of the radial density profile. We discuss this mechanism with respect to recent measurements at MIT.

Dissipative dynamics of vortex arrays in anisotropic traps

We discuss the dissipative dynamics of vortex arrays in trapped Bose-condensed gases and analyze the lifetime of the vortices as a function of trap anisotropy and the temperature. In particular, we distinguish the two regimes of the dissipative dynamics, depending on the relative strength of the mutual friction between the vortices and the thermal component, and the friction of the thermal particles on the trap anisotropy. We study the effects of heating of the thermal cloud by the escaping vortices on the dynamics of the system.

Dissipative dynamics of a vortex state in a trapped Bose-condensed gas

We discuss dissipative dynamics of a vortex state in a trapped Bose-condensed gas at finite temperature and draw a scenario of decay of this state in a static trap. The interaction of the vortex with the thermal cloud transfers energy from the vortex to the cloud and induces the motion of the vortex core to the border of the condensate. Once the vortex reaches the border, it immediately decays through the creation of excitations. We calculate the characteristic life-time of a vortex state and address the question of how the dissipative dynamics of vortices can be studied experimentally.

Dissipative dynamics of a kink state in a Bose-condensed gas

We develop a theory of dissipative dynamics of a kink state in a finite-temperature Bose-condensed gas. We find that due to the interaction with the thermal cloud the kink state accelerates towards the velocity of sound and continuously transforms to the ground-state condensate. We calculate the life-time of a kink state in a trapped gas and discuss possible experimental implications.

Dynamics of two interacting Bose-Einstein condensates

We analize the dynamics of two trapped interacting Bose-Einstein condensates and indentify two regimes for the evolution: the regime of slow periodic oscillations and the regime of strong non-linear mixing leading to the damping of the relative motion of the condensates. We compare our predictions with an experiment recently performed at JILA.

Finite Temperature Perturbation Theory for a Spatially Inhomogeneous Bose-condensed Gas

We develop a finite temperature perturbation theory (beyond the mean field) for a Bose-condensed gas and calculate temperature-dependent damping rates and energy shifts for Bogolyubov excitations of any energy. The theory is generalized for the case of excitations in a spatially inhomogeneous (trapped) Bose-condensed gas, where we emphasize the principal importance of inhomogeneouty of the condensate density profile and develop the method of calculating the self-energy functions. The use of the theory is demonstrated by calculating the damping rates and energy shifts of low-energy quasiclassical excitations, i.e. the quasiclassical excitations with energies much smaller than the mean field interaction between particles. In this case the boundary region of the condensate plays a crucial role, and the result for the damping rates and energy shifts is completely different from that in spatially homogeneous gases. We also analyze the frequency shifts and damping of sound waves in cylindrical Bose condensates and discuss the role of damping in the recent MIT experiment on the sound propagation.

Damping of low-energy excitations of a trapped Bose condensate at finite temperatures

We present the theory of damping of low-energy excitations of a trapped Bose condensate at finite temperatures, where the damping is provided by the interaction of these excitations with the thermal excitations. We emphasize the key role of stochastization in the behavior of the thermal excitations for damping in non-spherical traps. The damping rates of the lowest excitations, following from our theory, are in fair agreement with the data of recent JILA and MIT experiments. The damping of quasiclassical excitations is determined by the condensate boundary region, and the result for the damping rate is drastically different from that in a spatially homogeneous gas.

Formation of antihydrogen atoms in an ultra-cold positron-antiproton plasma

We discuss the formation of antihydrogen atoms ($\bar{\rm H}$) in an ultra-cold positron-antiproton plasma. For positron densities $n_p\agt 10^8$ cm$^{-3}$ the characteristic formation time of stable $\bar{H}$ is determined by collisional relaxation of highly excited atoms produced in the process of 3-body Thompson recombination. Relying on the mechanisms of ``replacement collisions'' and ``transverse collisional drift'' we find a bottleneck in the relaxation kinetics and analyze the physical consequences of this phenomenon.

Influence of nearly resonant light on the scattering length in low-temperature atomic gases

We develop the idea of manipulating the scattering length $a$ in low-temperature atomic gases by using nearly resonant light. As found, if the incident light is close to resonance with one of the bound $p$ levels of electronically excited molecule, then virtual radiative transitions of a pair of interacting atoms to this level can significantly change the value and even reverse the sign of $a$. The decay of the gas due to photon recoil, resulting from the scattering of light by single atoms, and due to photoassociation can be minimized by selecting the frequency detuning and the Rabi frequency. Our calculations show the feasibility of optical manipulations of trapped Bose condensates through a light-induced change in the mean field interaction between atoms, which is illustrated for $^7$Li.

Three-body recombination of ultra-cold atoms to a weakly bound $s$ level

We discuss three-body recombination of ultra-cold atoms to a weakly bound $s$ level. In this case, characterized by large and positive scattering length $a$ for pair interaction, we find a repulsive effective potential for three-body collisions, which strongly reduces the recombination probability and makes simple Jastrow-like approaches absolutely inadequate. In the zero temperature limit we obtain a universal relation, independent of the detailed shape of the interaction potential, for the (event) rate constant of three-body recombination: $α_{\rm rec}=3.9\hbar a^4/m$, where $m$ is the atom mass.
