Extending the GKZ limit without breaking Lorentz Invariance

A scenario is presented on how to shift the predicted cutoff in the cosmic ray spectrum at 10**20 eV, called the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin limit (GKZ), to larger energies without breaking the Lorentz invariance. The formulation is based on a pseudo-complex extension of standard field theory. The dispersion relation of particles can be changed, leading to a modification of the GKZ limit. Maximal shifts are determined.

Modelling Pentaquark and Heptaquark States

A schematic model for hadronic states, based on constituent quarks and antiquarks and gluon pairs, is discussed. The phenomenological interaction between quarks and gluons is QCD motivated. The obtained hadronic spectrum leads to the identification of nucleon and $Δ$ resonances and to pentaquark and heptaquark states. The predicted lowest pentaquark state ($J^π = {1/2}^-$) lies at the energy of 1.5 GeV and it is associated to the observed $Θ^+(1540)$ state. For heptaquarks ($J^π = {1/2}^+, {3/2}^+$) the model predicts the lowest state at 2.5 GeV.

A schematic model for QCD. III : Hadronic states

The hadronic spectrum obtained in the framework of a QCD-inspired schematic model, is presented. The model is the extension of a previous version, whose basic degrees of freedom are constituent quarks and antiquarks, and gluons. The interaction between quarks and gluons is a phenomenological interaction and its parameters are fixed from data. The classification of the states, in terms of quark and antiquark and gluon configurations is based on symmetry considerations, and it is independent of the chosen interaction. Following this procedure, nucleon and $Δ$ resonances are identified, as well as various penta- and hepta-quarks states. The lowest pentaquarks state is predicted at 1.5 GeV and it has negative parity, while the lowest hepta-quarks state has positive parity and its energy is of the order of 2.5 GeV.

A schematic model for QCD I: Low energy meson states

A simple model for QCD is presented, which is able to reproduce the meson spectrum at low energy. The model is a Lipkin type model for quarks coupled to gluons. The basic building blocks are pairs of quark-antiquarks coupled to a definite flavor and spin. These pairs are coupled to pairs of gluons with spin zero. The multiplicity problem, which dictates that a given experimental state can be described in various manners, is removed when a particle-mixing interaction is turned on. In this first paper of a series we concentrates on the discussion of meson states at low energy, the so-called zero temperature limit of the theory. The treatment of baryonic states is indicated, also.

A schematic model for QCD II: finite temperature regime

A schematic model for QCD, developed in a previous paper, is applied to calculate meson properties in the high temperature (up to 0.5 GeV) regime. It is a Lipkin model for quark-antiquark pairs coupled to gluon pairs of spin zero. The partition function is constructed with the obtained meson spectrum and several thermodynamical observables are calculated, like: the energy density, heat capacity, as well as relative production rates of mesons and absolute production rates for pions and kaons. The model predictions show a qualitative agreement with data. Based on these results we advocate the use of the model as a toy model for QCD.

A schematic model for QCD at finite temperature

The simplest version of a class of toy models for QCD is presented. It is a Lipkin-type model, for the quark-antiquark sector, and, for the gluon sector, gluon pairs with spin zero are treated as elementary bosons. The model restricts to mesons with spin zero and to few baryonic states. The corresponding energy spectrum is discussed. We show that ground state correlations are essential to describe physical properties of the spectrum at low energies. Phase transitions are described in an effective manner, by using coherent states. The appearance of a Goldstone boson for large values of the interaction strength is discussed, as related to a collective state. The formalism is extended to consider finite temperatures. The partition function is calculated, in an approximate way, showing the convenience of the use of coherent states. The energy density, heat capacity and transitions from the hadronic phase to the quark-gluon plasma are calculated.

Bound States from Regge Trajectories in a Scalar Model

The calculation of bound state properties using renormalization group techniques to compute the corresponding Regge trajectories is presented. In particular, we investigate the bound states in different charge sectors of a scalar theory with interaction (phi^dagger phi chi). The resulting bound state spectrum is surprisingly rich. Where possible we compare and contrast with known results of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation and, in the non-relativistic limit, with the corresponding Schr"odinger equation.

Molecular Collective Vibrations in the Ternary Neutronless Fission of $^{252}$Cf

Based on a recent experimental finding which may suggest the existence of a tri-nuclear molecular structure before the cold ternary fragmentation of $^{252}$Cf takes place, we solved the eigenvalue problem of a certain class of vibrations which are very likely to occur in these molecules. These oscillations are the result of the joined action of rotations of the heavier fragments and the transversal vibrations of the lighter spherical cluster with respect to the fission axis. In the calculation of the interaction between the heavier fragments we took into account higher multipole deformations, including the hexadecupole one, and introduced a repulsive nuclear part to insure the creation of a potential pocket in which a few molecular states can be accommodated. The possibility to observe the de-excitation of such states is discussed in connection with the molecular life-time.

Collective Modes of Tri-Nuclear Molecules

A geometrical model for tri-nuclear molecules is presented. An analytical solution is obtained provided the nuclei, which are taken to be prolately deformed, are connected in line to each other. Furthermore, the tri-nuclear molecule is composed of two heavy and one light cluster, the later sandwiched between the two heavy clusters. A basis is constructed in which Hamiltonians of more general configurations can be diagonalized. In the calculation of the interaction between the clusters higher multipole deformations are taken into account, including the hexadecupole one. A repulsive nuclear core is introduced in the potential in order to insure a quasi-stable configuration of the system. The model is applied to three nuclear molecules, namely $^{96}$Sr + $^{10}$Be + $^{146}$Ba, $^{108}$Mo + $^{10}$Be + $^{134}$Te and $^{112}$Ru + $^{10}$Be + $^{130}$Sn.

Glueball Spectrum from an Effective Hamiltonian

Using simple and general arguments we propose an effective Hamiltonian for the description of low-energy pure QCD. The Hamiltonian is a function of spatially constant collective modes. Its eigenstates can be organized into bands classified by the irreducible representations of an O(8) group. The latter also determine parity and charge conjugation of the states. The energy spectrum agrees well with the glueball spectrum as measured on the lattice, and in particular the level ordering with respect to spin is naturally explained.

Quantum Field Theory in the Limit x << 1

The asymptotic high momentum behaviour of quantum field theories with cubic interactions is investigated using renormalization group techniques in the asymmetric limit x << 1. Particular emphasis is paid to theories with interactions involving more than one field where it is found that a matrix renormalization is necessary. Asymptotic scaling forms, in agreement with Regge theory, are derived for the elastic two-particle scattering amplitude and verified in one-loop renormalization group improved perturbation theory, corresponding to the summation of leading logs to all orders. We give explicit forms for the Regge trajectories of different scalar theories in this approximation and determine the signatures.

H2+ ion in strong magnetic field: a variational study

Using a single trial function we perform an accurate calculation of the ground state $1σ_g$ of the hydrogenic molecular ion $H^+_2$ in a constant uniform magnetic field ranging $0-10^{13}$ G. We show that this trial function also makes it possible to study the negative parity ground state $1σ_u$. We obtain that over the whole range of magnetic fields studied, the calculated binding energies are in most cases larger than binding energies obtained previously by other authors using different methods.

Regge Behaviour from an Environmentally Friendly Renormalization Group

The asymptotic behaviour of cubic field theories is investigated in the Regge limit using the techniques of environmentally friendly renormalization, environmentally friendly in the present context meaning asymmetric in its momentum dependence. In particular we consider the crossover between large and small energies at fixed momentum transfer for a model scalar theory of the type phi^2 psi. The asymptotic forms of the crossover scaling functions are exhibited for all two particle scattering processes in this channel to one loop in a renormalization group improved perturbation theory.

Boson Mapping in Field Theory

A boson mapping of pair field operators is presented. The mapping preserves all hermiticity properties and the Poisson bracket relations between fields and momenta. The most practical application of the boson mapping is to field theories which exhibit bound states of pairs of fields. As a concrete application we consider, in the low energy limit, the Wick-Cutkosky model with equal mass for the charged fields.

Double beta decay of $^{100}Mo$: the deformed limit

The double beta decay of $^{100}Mo$ to the ground state and excited states of $^{100}Ru$ is analysed in the context of the pseudo SU(3) scheme. The results of this deformed limit are compared with the vibrational one based on the QRPA formalism. Consistency between the deformed limit and the experimental information is found for various $ββ$ transitions, although, in this approximation some energies and B(E2) intensities cannot reproduced.

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in Heavy Deformed Nuclei

The zero neutrino mode of the double beta decay in heavy deformed nuclei is investigated in the framework of the pseudo SU(3) model, which has provided an accurate description of collective nuclear structure and predicted half-lives for the two neutrino mode in good agreement with experiments. In the case of $^{238}U$ the calculated zero neutrino half-life is at least three orders of magnitude greater than the two neutrino one, giving strong support of the identification of the radiochemically determined half-life as being the two neutrino double beta decay. For $^{150}Nd$ the zero neutrino matrix elements are of the order of magnitude of, but lesser than, those evaluated using the QRPA. This result confirms that different nuclear models produce similar zero neutrino matrix elements, contrary to the two neutrino case. Using these pseudo SU(3) results and the upper limit for the neutrino mass we estimate the $ββ_{0ν}$ half-lives for six nuclei. An upper limit for majoron coupling constant is extracted from the experimental data.
