Study of quasi-particle dynamics using the optical pulse response of asuperconducting resonator

We study the optical pulse response of a superconducting half-wavelength coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator. We apply a short optical pulse to the center strip of the CPW resonator, where the current distribution shows antinodes or nodes for different resonance modes, and measure the frequency response. We develop a time-dependent variable inductance circuit model with which we can simulate the optical pulse response of the resonator. By fitting this model to experimental data, we extract the temporal kinetic inductance variations, which directly reflect the quasi-particle recombination with time and diffusion in space. We also retrieve the spatial size of the quasi-particle distribution and the quasi-particle diffusion constant. Our study is very useful for the design of photon-counting kinetic inductance detectors, and the method developed in this work provides a useful way to study the quasi-particle dynamics in the superconductor.

Supersymmetry Breaking from a Calabi-Yau Singularity

We conjecture a geometric criterion for determining whether supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in certain string backgrounds. These backgrounds contain wrapped branes at Calabi-Yau singularites with obstructions to deformation of the complex structure. We motivate our conjecture with a particular example: the $Y^{2,1}$ quiver gauge theory corresponding to a cone over the first del Pezzo surface, $dP_1$. This setup can be analyzed using ordinary supersymmetric field theory methods, where we find that gaugino condensation drives a deformation of the chiral ring which has no solutions. We expect this breaking to be a general feature of any theory of branes at a singularity with a smaller number of possible deformations than independent anomaly-free fractional branes.

Dirac Particles in Twisted Tubes

We consider the dynamics of a relativistic Dirac particle constrained to move in the interior of a twisted tube by confining boundary conditions, in the approximation that the curvature of the tube is small and slowly varying. In contrast with the nonrelativistic theory, which predicts that a particle's spin does not change as the particle propagates along the tube, we find that the angular momentum eigenstates of a relativistic spin-1/2 particle may behave nontrivially. For example, a particle with its angular momentum initially polarized in the direction of propagation may acquire a nonzero component of angular momentum in the opposite direction on turning through 2 πradians. Also, the usual nonrelativistic effective potential acquires an additional factor in the relativistic theory.
