Endowing networks with desired symmetries and modular behavior

Symmetries in a network regulate its organization into functional clustered states. Given a generic ensemble of nodes and a desirable cluster (or group of clusters), we exploit the direct connection between the elements of the eigenvector centrality and the graph symmetries to generate a network equipped with the desired cluster(s), with such a synthetical structure being furthermore perfectly reflected in the modular organization of the network's functioning. Our results solve a relevant problem of reverse engineering, and are of generic application in all cases where a desired parallel functioning needs to be blueprinted.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of 3d-4f double perovskite material

Double perovskite-based magnets wherein frustration and competition between emergent degrees of freedom are at play can lead to novel electronic and magnetic phenomena. Herein, we report the electronic structure and magnetic properties of an ordered double perovskite material Ho2CoMnO6. In the double perovskite with general class A2BB'O6, the octahedral B and B'-site has a distinct crystallographic site. The Rietveld refinement of XRD data reveals that Ho2CoMnO6 crystallizes in the monoclinic P21/n space group. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the charge state of cations present in this material. The temperature dependence of magnetization and specific heat exhibit a long-range ferromagnetic ordering at Tc ~ 76 K owing to the presence of super exchange interaction between Co2+ and Mn4+ moments. Furthermore, the magnetization isotherm at 5 K shows a hysteresis curve that confirms ferromagnetic behavior of this double perovskite. We observed a re-entrant glassy state in the intermediate temperature regime, which is attributed to inherent anti-site disorder and competing interactions. A large magnetocaloric effect has been observed much below the ferromagnetic transition temperature. The temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy studies support the presence of spin-phonon coupling and short-range order above Tc in this double perovskite. The stabilization of magnetic ordering and charge states is further analyzed through electronic structure calculations. The latter also infers the compound to be a narrow band gap insulator with the gap arising between the lower and upper Hubbard Co-d subbands. Our results demonstrate that anti-site disorder and complex 3d-4f exchange interactions in the spin-lattice account for the observed electronic and magnetic properties in this promising double perovskite material.

Investigation of spin-phonon coupling and local magnetic properties in magnetoelectric Fe2TeO6

Spin-phonon coupling originated from spin-lattice correlation depends upon different exchange interactions in transition metal oxides containing 3d magnetic ions. Spin-lattice coupling can influence the coupling mechanism in magnetoelectric material. To understand the spin-lattice correlation in inverse trirutile Fe2TeO6 (FTO), magnetic properties and phonon spectra are studied. Signature of short-range magnetic correlation induced by 5/2-5/2 dimeric interaction and magnetic anomaly at 150 K is perceived apart from the familiar sharp transition (TN~210K) corresponding to long-range order by magnetization and heat capacity measurement. The magnetic transitions and the spin dynamics are further locally probed by muon spin resonance ({\mu}SR) measurement in both zero fields (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) mode. Three dynamically distinct temperature regimes; (i) T >TN, (ii) TN>T>150 K, and (iii) T<150 K, are observed. A swift change in spin dynamics is realized at 150K by {\mu}SR, though previous studies suggest long-range antiferromagnetic order. The observation of renormalization of different Raman modes below 210K suggests the existence of spin-phonon coupling in the material. The coupling strength is quantified as in the range 0.1-1.2 cm-1 following the two-spin cluster approximation. We propose that the spin-phonon coupling is mediated by the Fe-O2-Fe interbilayer exchange play a significant role in ME coupling observed in the material.

d5-off-centering induced ferroelectric and magnetoelectric correlations in trirutile-Fe2TeO6

We present the rare existence of d5 off-centering, weak ferroelectric polarization and demonstrate its correlation with observed magnetoelectric (ME) properties in the G type (TN~210 K) antiferromagnet Fe2TeO6 (FTO) compound. The origin of ferroelectricity (FE) is associated with both lattice and asymmetric electron density distribution around the ion cores. ME coupling is observed in magnetic field-dependent polarization, ME voltage, and magnetostrain measurements. Short-range magnetic ordering due to intrabilayer dimeric exchange coupling via the double oxygen bridged Fe-O1-Fe pathway is proposed to play a dominating role to exhibit the negative nonlinear magnetic field dependent ME behavior at 300 K. Interbilayer exchange via Fe-O2-Fe pathways dominantly determines the hysteretic nonlinear magnetic field dependent ME response below TN. The observed nonlinear ME coupling signifies magnetoelasticity as manifested in the temperature and magnetic field-dependent strain measurement. Hence the rare existence of ferroelectricity and magnetoelectric coupling by d5 ion is presented in FTO.

Emergent antiferromagnetism of YTiO3 in YTiO3-CaTiO3 superlattices

Transport and magnetoresistance measurements are performed on metallic, high-carrier density YTiO3-CaTiO3 superlattices as a probe towards the investigation of an emergent magnetic order of YTiO3. On varying the thickness of YTiO3 while keeping the CaTiO3 layer thickness constant in the superlattices, a low-temperature upturn in sheet-resistance, a non-Fermi liquid-like charge transport and positive magnetoresistance are observed. Analyses of the origin of such effects suggest that a unique antiferromagnetic order is realized in the ultra-thin, epitaxially strained YTiO3 layers, which corroborates well with some recent theoretical predictions in this regard.

Homoclinic bifurcations in low-Prandtl-number Rayleigh-Bénard convection with uniform rotation

We present results of direct numerical simulations on homoclinic gluing and ungluing bifurcations in low-Prandtl-number ($ 0 \leq Pr \leq 0.025 $) Rayleigh-Bénard system rotating slowly and uniformly about a vertical axis. We have performed simulations with \textit{stress-free} top and bottom boundaries for several values of Taylor number ($5 \leq Ta \leq 50$) near the instability onset. We observe a single homoclinic ungluing bifurcation, marked by the spontaneous breaking of a larger limit cycle into two limit cycles with the variation of the reduced Rayleigh number $r$ for smaller values of $Ta (< 25)$. A pair of homoclinic bifurcations, instead of one bifurcation, is observed with variation of $r$ for slightly higher values of $Ta$ ($25 \leq Ta \leq 50$) in the same fluid dynamical system. The variation of the bifurcation threshold with $Ta$ is also investigated. We have also constructed a low-dimensional model which qualitatively captures the dynamics of the system near the homoclinic bifurcations for low rotation rates. The model is used to study the unfolding of bifurcations and the variation of the homoclinic bifurcation threshold with $Pr$.

Mn induced modifications of Ga 3d photoemission from (Ga, Mn)As: evidence for long range effects

Using synchrotron based photoemission, we have investigated the Mn-induced changes in Ga 3d core level spectra from as-grown ${\rm Ga}_{1-x}{\rm Mn}_{x}{\rm As}$. Although Mn is located in Ga substitutional sites, and does therefore not have any Ga nearest neighbours, the impact of Mn on the Ga core level spectra is pronounced even at Mn concentrations in the range of 0.5%. The analysis shows that each Mn atom affects a volume corresponding to a sphere with around 1.4 nm diameter.

Pseudogap behavior in Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$: A photoemission study

The valence band electronic structure of Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ has been investigated across its paramagnetic metallic (PMM) - ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) - antiferromagnetic insulator (AFMI) transition. Using surface sensitive high resolution photoemission we have conclusively demonstrated the presence of a pseudogap of magnitude 80 meV in the near Fermi level electronic spectrum in the PMM and FMM phases and finite intensity at the Fermi level in the charge ordering (CO)-AFMI phase. The pseudogap behavior is explained in terms of the strong electron-phonon interaction and the formation of Jahn Teller (JT) polarons, indicating the charge localizations. The finite intensity at the Fermi level in the insulating phase showed a lack of charge ordering in the surface of the Pr$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ samples.

A simple method to produce almost perfect graphene on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

A simple and effective stepwise-method has been developed to remove defects from the top graphene layers of highly orientated pyrolytic graphite. Using a combination of ozone exposure and moderately high temperature we have shown that a defect-rich graphite surface can be modified to generate a graphene-like surface containing a negligible amount of oxygen, hydrogen and sp3 carbon. We report definitive x-ray photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis after each stage of the process, suggest a mechanism by which the modification occurs and propose it as a route towards the preparation or manipulation of pristine graphene samples.

Near Fermi level Electronic Structure of Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$: Photoemission Study

In this study, we report the observation of a pseudogap associated with the insulator-metal transition in compositions of Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ system with no charge ordering. Our valence band photoemission study shows that the observed shifts in the near Fermi level density of states are abrupt at the Curie transtion and occur over an energy scale of $\sim$ 1 eV, strongly suggesting that the charge-ordering gap observed earlier in other manganites and the pseudogap observed here may indeed have same origin. These results could be understood within the framework of models based on electronic phase separation where it has been shown that the pseudogap is a generic feature of the mixed-phase compositions. Also, our band structure calculations on Pr$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ show the possible existence of half-metallicity in this system.

Pseudogap behavior of phase-separated Sm$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ : A comparative photoemission study with double exchange

Using valence band photoemission we have demonstrated the presence of a pseudogap in the near Fermi level electronic spectrum of some of the mixed phase compositions of Sm$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ system. The pseudogap was found to grow in size over a large region of the phase diagram of this system, finally leading to a metal-insulator transition. We have made a study comparing the near Fermi level behaviors of this system to those of a canonical double exchange system, namely, La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$. This study intends to highlight one of the important differences between the phase separated and double exchange colossal magnetoresistance systems in the nature of their energy gaps across the metal-insulator transitions. These differences could be ascribed to the distortions in the MnO$_6$ octahedra of their structures that regulate the localization of charge carriers. We have discussed our results from the point of view of models based on the idea of phase separation.

Half Metallicity in Pr$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$: A first Principle study

In this communication we present a first principle study of Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ with $x = 0.25$. While the parent compounds of this system are antiferromagnetic insulators with different structural and magnetic ground states, the $x = 0.25$ is in the colossal magnetoresistance regime of the Pr$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ phase diagram [C. Martin, A. Maignan, M. Hervieu, B. Raveau, Phys. Rev. B 60 (1999) 12191]. Our band structure calculations for the end-point compounds matches well with the existing theoretical and experimental results [C. Martin, A. Maignan, M. Hervieu, B. Raveau, Phys. Rev. B 60 (1999) 12191; Rune Sondena, P. Ravindran, Svein Stolen, Tor Grande, Michael Hanfland, Phys. Rev. B 74 (2006) 144102]. Interestingly, our calculations show that the Pr$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ has a half-metallic character with a huge band gap of 2.8 eV in the minority band. We believe this result would fuel further interest in some of these special compositions of colossal magnetoresistive manganites as they could be potential candidates for spintronic devices. We discuss the half-metallicity of the Pr$_{0.75}$Sr$_{0.25}$MnO$_3$ in the light of changes in the orbital hybridization as a result of Sr doping in PrMnO$_3$. Further, we highlight the importance of half-metallicity for a consolidated understanding of colossal magnetoresistance effect.

Electronic structure of Pr$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ near the Fermi level studied by ultraviolet photoelectron and x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We have investigated the temperature-dependent changes in the near-$E$$_F$ occupied and unoccupied states of Pr$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ which shows the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The temperature-dependent changes in the charge and orbital degrees of freedom and associated changes in the Mn 3$d$ - O 2$p$ hybridization result in varied O 2$p$ contributions to the valence band. A quantitative estimate of the charge transfer energy ($E$$_{CT}$) shows a larger value compared to the earlier reported estimates. The charge localization causing the large $E$$_{CT}$ is discussed in terms of different models including the electronic phase separation.
