A Cartan-Eilenberg approach to Homotopical Algebra

In this paper we propose an approach to homotopical algebra where the basic ingredient is a category with two classes of distinguished morphisms: strong and weak equivalences. These data determine the cofibrant objects by an extension property analogous to the classical lifting property of projective modules. We define a Cartan-Eilenberg category as a category with strong and weak equivalences such that there is an equivalence between its localization with respect to weak equivalences and the localised category of cofibrant objets with respect to strong equivalences. This equivalence allows us to extend the classical theory of derived additive functors to this non additive setting. The main examples include Quillen model categories and functor categories with a triple, in the last case we find examples in which the class of strong equivalences is not determined by a homotopy relation. Among other applications, we prove the existence of filtered minimal models for \emph{cdg} algebras over a zero-characteristic field and we formulate an acyclic models theorem for non additive functors.

Monoidal functors, acyclic models and chain operads

We prove that for a topological operad $P$ the operad of oriented cubical chains, $C^{ord}_\ast(P)$, and the operad of singular chains, $S_\ast(P)$, are weakly equivalent. As a consequence, $C^{ord}_\ast(P;\mathbb{Q})$ is formal if and only if $S_\ast(P;\mathbb{Q})$ is formal, thus linking together some formality results spread in the literature. The proof is based on an acyclic models theorem for monoidal functors. We give different variants of the acyclic models theorem and apply the contravariant case to study the cohomology theories for simplicial sets defined by $R$-simplicial differential graded algebras.

Moduli Spaces and Formal Operads

Let overline{M}_{g,n} be the moduli space of stable algebraic curves of genus g with n marked points. With the operations which relate the different moduli spaces identifying marked points, the family (overline{M}_{g,n})_{g,n} is a modular operad of projective smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks, overline{M}. In this paper we prove that the modular operad of singular chains C_*(overline{M};Q) is formal; so it is weakly equivalent to the modular operad of its homology H_*(overline{M};Q). As a consequence, the "up to homotopy" algebras of these two operads are the same. To obtain this result we prove a formality theorem for operads analogous to Deligne-Griffiths-Morgan-Sullivan formality theorem, the existence of minimal models of modular operads, and a characterization of formality for operads which shows that formality is independent of the ground field.

Three-party entanglement from positronium

The decay of ortho-positronium into three photons produces a physical realization of a pure state with three-party entanglement. Its quantum correlations are analyzed using recent results on quantum information theory, looking for the final state which has the maximal amount of GHZ-like correlations. This state allows for a statistical dismissal of local realism stronger than the one obtained using any entangled state of two spin one-half particles.

Optimal generalized quantum measurements for arbitrary spin systems

Positive operator valued measurements on a finite number of N identically prepared systems of arbitrary spin J are discussed. Pure states are characterized in terms of Bloch-like vectors restricted by a SU(2 J+1) covariant constraint. This representation allows for a simple description of the equations to be fulfilled by optimal measurements. We explicitly find the minimal POVM for the N=2 case, a rigorous bound for N=3 and set up the analysis for arbitrary N.

Optimal minimal measurements of mixed states

The optimal and minimal measuring strategy is obtained for a two-state system prepared in a mixed state with a probability given by any isotropic a priori distribution. We explicitly construct the specific optimal and minimal generalized measurements, which turn out to be independent of the a priori probability distribution, obtaining the best guesses for the unknown state as well as a closed expression for the maximal mean averaged fidelity. We do this for up to three copies of the unknown state in a way which leads to the generalization to any number of copies, which we then present and prove.

Minimal optimal generalized quantum measurements

Optimal and finite positive operator valued measurements on a finite number $N$ of identically prepared systems have been presented recently. With physical realization in mind we propose here optimal and minimal generalized quantum measurements for two-level systems. We explicitly construct them up to N=7 and verify that they are minimal up to N=5. We finally propose an expression which gives the size of the minimal optimal measurements for arbitrary $N$.

eta-eta' mixing from U_L(3) x U_R(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory

We obtain explicit expressions for the ηand η' masses and decay constants using U_L(3) x U_R(3) chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order in a combined expansion in p^2 and 1/Nc. A numerical fit of the parameters appearing to this order of the expansion is also discussed.

Chiral Effective Lagrangian in the large-Nc limit: the nonet case

A U_L(3) \otimes U_R(3) low-energy effective lagrangian for the nonet of pseudogoldstone bosons that appear in the large-Nc limit of QCD is presented including terms up to four derivatives and explicit symmetry breaking terms up to quadratic in the quark masses. The one-loop renormalization of the couplings is worked out using the heat-kernel technique and dimensional renormalization. The calculation is carried through for U_L(n_l) \otimes U_R(n_l), thus allowing for a generic number n_l of light quark flavours. The crucial advantages that the expansion in powers of 1/N_c bring about are discussed. Special emphasis is put in pointing out what features are at variance with the SU_L \otimes SU_R results when the singlet η' is included in the theory.

Speed of Light in Non--Trivial Vacua

We unify all existing results on the change of the speed of low--energy photons due to modifications of the vacuum, finding that it is given by a universal constant times the quotient of the difference of energy densities between the usual and modified vacua over the mass of the electron to the fourth power. Whether photons move faster or slower than $c$ depends only on the lower or higher energy density of the modified vacuum, respectively. Physically, a higher energy density is characterized by the presence of additional particles (real or virtual) in the vacuum whereas a lower one stems from the absence of some virtual modes. We then carry out a systematic study of the speed of propagation of massless particles for several field theories up to two loops on a thermal vacuum. Only low--energy massless particles corresponding to a massive theory show genuine modifications of their speed while remaining massless. All other modifications are mass-related, or running mass-related. We also develop a formalism for the Casimir vacuum which parallels the thermal one and check that photons travel faster than $c$ between plates.
