Black hole solutions in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity with cubic terms

We study four dimensional non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz type gravity, in the case of an action with terms, cubic in curvature. For special choices of the free parameters of the model, we obtain two new analytic black hole solutions which exhibit the standard Schwarzschild asymptotic behavior in the large distance limit. The effect of cubic terms in the short range behavior of the black hole solutions is discussed.

Non-Linear Sigma Model and asymptotic freedom at the Lifshitz point

We construct the general O(N)-symmetric non-linear sigma model in 2+1 spacetime dimensions at the Lifshitz point with dynamical critical exponent z=2. For a particular choice of the free parameters, the model is asymptotically free with the beta function coinciding to the one for the conventional sigma model in 1+1 dimensions. In this case, the model admits also a simple description in terms of adjoint currents.

Black Hole Solutions in 5D Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We study the full spectrum of spherically symmetric solutions in the five dimensional non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz type gravity theories. For appropriate ranges of the coupling parameters, we have found several classes of solutions which are characterized by an AdS_5, dS_5 or flat large distance asymptotic behaviour, plus the standard 1/r^2 tail of the usual five-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. In addition we have found solutions with an unconventional short or large distance behaviour, and for a special range of the coupling parameters solutions which coincide with black hole solutions of conventional relativistic five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Schwinger-Dyson approach for a Lifshitz-type Yukawa model

We consider a 3+1 dimensional field theory at a Lifshitz point for a dynamical critical exponent z=3, with a scalar and a fermion field coupled via a Yukawa interaction. Using the non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson approach we calculate quantum corrections to the effective action. We demonstrate that a first order derivative kinetic term as well as a mass term for the fermion arise dynamically. This signals the restoration of Lorentz symmetry in the IR regime of the single fermion model, although for theories with more than one fermionic species such a conclusion will require fine-tuning of couplings. The limitations of the model and our approach are discussed.

Anti de Sitter 5D black hole solutions with a self-interacting bulk scalar field: a potential reconstruction approach

We construct asymptotically AdS black hole solutions, with a self-interacting bulk scalar field, in the context of 5D general relativity. As the observable universe is characterized by spatial flatness, we focus to solutions where the horizon of the black hole, and subsequently all 3D hypersurfaces for fixed radial coordinate, have zero spatial curvature. We examine two cases for the black hole scalar hair: a) an exponential decaying scalar field profile and b) an inverse power scalar field profile. The scalar black hole solutions we present in this paper, are characterized by four functions f(r), a(r), phi(r) and V(phi(r)). Only the functions phi(r) and a(r) are determined analytically, while the functions f(r) and V(phi(r)) are expressed semi-analytically, by integral formulas in terms of a(r). We present our numerical results in figures and we study in detail the characteristic properties of our solutions. We also note that the potential we obtain has a non-convex form in agreement with the corresponding "no hair theorem" for AdS space-times.

Neutrino oscillations in a Robertson-Walker Universe with space time foam

In Phys. Rev. D77 (2008) 105001, we have studied decoherence models for flavour oscillations in four-dimensional stochastically fluctuating space times and discussed briefly the sensitivity of current terrestrial and astrophysical neutrino experiments to such models. In this addendum we extend these results to incorporate the effects due to the expansion of the Universe, so that our analysis can be useful in studies of extragalactic high-energy neutrinos, such as those coming from Gamma Ray Bursts at cosmological distances. Unfortunately for some microscopic models of foam, constructed in the string theory framework, we arrive at pessimistic conclusions about the detectability of the decoherence effects via flavour oscillation meaurements.

Asymmetrically Warped Brane Models, Bulk Photons and Lorentz Invariance

We present a brief review of our recent work [1] on asymmetrically warped brane models, where the background metric is characterized by different time and space warp factors. In particular we examine the case of bulk photons and we show that the standard Lorentz invariant dispersion relation is corrected by nonlinear terms which lead to an Energy-dependent speed of light. Stringent constraints on the parameters of our models can be set by comparing the results with recent data from high-energy Gamma-Ray Astrophysics, for instance the MAGIC Telescope.

Bulk photons in Asymmetrically Warped Space-times and Non-trivial Vacuum Refractive Index

We consider asymmetrically warped brane models, or equivalently brane models where the background metric is characterized by different time and space warp factors. The main feature of these models is that 4D Lorentz symmetry is violated for fields which propagate in the bulk, such as gravitons. In this paper we examine the case of bulk photons in asymmetrically warped brane models. Although our results are general, we examine here two specific but characteristic solutions: 1) AdS-Schwarzschild 5D Black Hole solution and 2) AdS-Reissner Nordstrom 5D Black Hole solution. We show that the standard Lorentz invariant dispersion relation for 4D photons is corrected by nonlinear terms which lead to an Energy-dependent speed of light. Specifically, we obtain a sub-luminous Energy-dependent refractive index of the form n_{eff}(ω)=1+c_{G} ω^2, where ωis the energy of the photon, and the factor c_G is always positive and depends on the free parameters of the model. Finally, comparing the results with recent data from the MAGIC Telescope, claiming a delayed arrival of photons from the Active Galactic Nucleus of Mk501, we impose concrete restrictions to the two sets of models examined in this work. We shall also discuss briefly other possible astrophysical constraints on our models.

Neutrino oscillations in a stochastic model for space-time foam

We study decoherence models for flavour oscillations in four-dimensional stochastically fluctuating space times and discuss briefly the sensitivity of current neutrino experiments to such models. We pay emphasis on demonstrating the model dependence of the associated decoherence-induced damping coefficients in front of the oscillatory terms in the respective transition probabilities between flavours. Within the context of specific models of foam, involving point-like D-branes and leading to decoherence-induced damping which is inversely proportional to the neutrino energies, we also argue that future limits on the relevant decoherence parameters coming from TeV astrophysical neutrinos, to be observed in ICE-CUBE, are not far from theoretically expected values with Planck mass suppression. Ultra high energy neutrinos from Gamma Ray Bursts at cosmological distances can also exhibit in principle sensitivity to such effects.

Graviton localization and Newton's law for brane models with a non-minimally coupled bulk scalar field

Brane world models with a non-minimally coupled bulk scalar field have been studied recently. In this paper we consider metric fluctuations around an arbitrary gravity-scalar background solution, and we show that the corresponding spectrum includes a localized zero mode which strongly depends on the profile of the background scalar field. For a special class of solutions, with a warp factor of the RS form, we solve the linearized Einstein equations, for a point-like mass source on the brane, by using the brane bending formalism. We see that general relativity on the brane is recovered only if we impose restrictions on the parameter space of the models under consideration.

Gauss-Bonnet gravity, brane world models, and non-minimal coupling

We study the case of brane world models with an additional Gauss-Bonnet term in the presence of a bulk scalar field which interacts non-minimally with gravity, via a possible interaction term of the form $-1/2 ξR ϕ^2$. The Einstein equations and the junction conditions on the brane are formulated, in the case of the bulk scalar field. Static solutions of this model are obtained by solving numerically the Einstein equations with the appropriate boundary conditions on the brane. Finally, we present graphically and comment these solutions for several values of the free parameters of the model.

Brane world scenario in the presence of a non-minimally coupled bulk scalar field

We present our recent work on brane world models with a non-minimally coupled scalar field. In [9] we examined the stability of these models against scalar field perturbations and we discussed possible physical implications, while in [10] we developed a numerical approach for the solution of the Einstein equations with the non-minimally coupled scalar field.

Second Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario with a nonminimally coupled bulk scalar field

In our previous work of Ref. [5] we studied the stability of the RS2-model with a nonminimally coupled bulk scalar field $ϕ$, and we found that in appropriate regions of $ξ$ the standard RS2-vacuum becomes unstable. The question that arises is whether there exist other new static stable solutions where the system can relax. In this work, by solving numerically the Einstein equations with the appropriate boundary conditions on the brane, we find that depending on the value of the nonminimal coupling $ξ$, this model possesses three classes of new static solutions with different characteristics. We also examine what happens when the fine tuning of the RS2-model is violated, and we obtain that these three classes of solutions are preserved in appropriate regions of the parameter space of the problem. The stability properties and possible physical implications of these new solutions are discussed in the main part of this paper. Especially in the case where $ξ=ξ_c$ ($ξ_c$ is the five dimensional conformal coupling) and the fine tuning is violated, we obtain a physically interesting static stable solution.

Gravity-induced instability and gauge field localization

The spectrum of a massless bulk scalar field Φ, with a possible interaction term of the form -ξR Φ^{2}, is investigated in the case of RS-geometry [1]. We show that the zero mode for ξ=0, turns into a tachyon mode, in the case of a nonzero negative value of ξ(ξ<0). As we see, the existence of the tachyon mode destabilizes the Φ=0 vacuum, against a new stable vacuum with nonzero Φnear the brane, and zero in the bulk. By using this result, we can construct a simple model for the gauge field localization, according to the philosophy of Dvali and Shifman (Higgs phase on the brane, confinement in the bulk).

Extra-Dimensions effects on the fermion-induced quantum energy in the presence of a constant magnetic field

We consider a U(1) gauge field theory with fermion fields (or with scalar fields) that live in a space with $δ$ extra compact dimensions, and we compute the fermion-induced quantum energy in the presence of a constant magnetic field, which is directed towards the x_3 axis. Our motivation is to study the effect of extra dimensions on the asymptotic behavior of the quantum energy in the strong field limit (eB>>M^{2}), where M=1/R. We see that the weak logarithmic growth of the quantum energy for four dimensions, is modified by a rapid power growth in the case of the extra dimensions.

Effective potential analysis for 5D SU(2) gauge theories at finite temperature and radius

We calculate the one loop effective potential for a 5D SU(2) gauge field theory at finite temperature $T=1/β$ and radius R=1/M. This calculation is performed, for the first time, in the case of background fields with two constant components $A^{3}_{y}$ (directed towards the compact extra dimension with radius R) and $A^{3}_τ$ (directed towards the compact Euclidean time with radius $β$). This model possesses two discrete symmetries known as Z_{M}(2) and Z_{T}(2). The corresponding phase diagram is presented in Ref. 4. However the arguments which lead to this diagram are mainly qualitative. We present a detailed analysis, from our point of view, for this phase diagram, and we support our arguments performing lattice simulations for a simple phenomenological model with two scalar fields interacting through the previously calculated potential.
