The measurement, fitting and interpretation of the radial distributions of Heavy-Light mesons calculated on a lattice with dynamical fermions

In our earlier work, the charge and matter radial distributions of heavy-light mesons were measured on a 16^3 times 24 lattice with a lattice spacing of a = 0.17 fm and a light quark mass about that of the strange quark. Several major improvements have now been made: 1) Dynamical fermions are used with a approximately 0.14 fm; 2) More gauge configurations are included (78 vs 20); 3) Off-axis, in addition to on-axis, insertions are made; 4) The data analysis is much more complete. In particular, distributions involving excited states are extracted.

The radial distributions of a heavy-light meson on a lattice

In an earlier work, the charge (vector) and matter (scalar) radial distributions of heavy-light mesons were measured in the quenched approximation on a 16^3 times 24 lattice with a quark-gluon coupling of 5.7, a lattice spacing of 0.17 fm, and a hopping parameter corresponding to a light quark mass about that of the strange quark. Several improvements are now made: 1) The configurations are generated using dynamical fermions with a quark-gluon coupling of 5.2 (a lattice spacing of 0.14 fm); 2) Many more gauge configurations are included (78 compared with the earlier 20); 3) The distributions at many off-axis, in addition to on-axis, points are measured; 4) The data-analysis is much more complete. In particular, distributions involving excited states are extracted. The exponential decay of the charge and matter distributions can be described by mesons of mass 0.9+-0.1 and 1.5+-0.1 GeV respectively - values that are consistent with those of vector and scalar qqbar-states calculated directly with the same lattice parameters.

The Charge and Matter radial distributions of Heavy-Light mesons calculated on a lattice with dynamical fermions

A knowledge of the radial distributions of quarks inside hadrons could lead to a better understanding of the QCD description of these hadrons and possibly suggest forms for phenomenological models. As a step in this direction, in an earlier work, the charge (vector) and matter (scalar) radial distributions of heavy-light mesons were measured in the quenched approximation on a 16^3x24 lattice with a lattice spacing of 'a' approx. 0.17 fm, and a hopping parameter corresponding to a light quark mass about that of the strange quark. Here several improvements are now made: 1) The configurations are generated using dynamical fermions with a approx 0.14 fm; 2) Many more gauge configurations areincluded; 3) The distributions at many off-axis, in addition to on-axis, points are measured; 4) The data analysis is much more complete. In particular, distributions involving excited states are extracted. The exponential decay of the charge and matter distributions can be described by mesons of mass 0.9 +- 0.1 and 1.5 +- 0.1 GeV respectively -- values that are consistent with those of vector and scalar $q\bar{q}$-states calculated directly with the same lattice parameters.

Hybrid meson decay from the lattice

We discuss the allowed decays of a hybrid meson in the heavy quark limit. We deduce that an important decay will be into a heavy quark non-hybrid state and a light quark meson, in other words, the de-excitation of an excited gluonic string by emission of a light quark-antiquark pair. We discuss the study of hadronic decays from the lattice in the heavy quark limit and apply this approach to explore the transitions from a spin-exotic hybrid to $χ_b η$ and $χ_b S$ where $S$ is a scalar meson. We obtain a signal for the transition emitting a scalar meson and we discuss the phenomenological implications.

Radial Correlations between two quarks

In nuclear many-body problems the short-range correlation between two nucleons is well described by the corresponding correlation in the {two}-body problem. Therefore, as a first step in any attempt at an analogous description of many-quark systems, it is necessary to know the two-quark correlation. With this in mind, we study the light quark distribution in a heavy-light meson with a static heavy quark. The charge and matter radial distributions of these heavy-light mesons are measured on a lattice with a light quark mass about that of the strange quark. Both distributions can be well fitted upto r approx 0.7 fm with the exponential form w_i^2(r), where w_i(r)=A exp(-r/r_i). For the charge(c) and matter(m) distributions r_c approx 0.32(2) fm and r_m \approx 0.24(2) fm. We also discuss the normalisation of the total charge (defined to be unity in the continuum limit) and matter integrated over all space, finding 1.30(5) and 0.4(1) respectively for a lattice spacing approx 0.17 fm.

The Charge and Matter radial distributions of Heavy-Light mesons calculated on a lattice

For a heavy-light meson with a static heavy quark, we can explore the light quark distribution. The charge and matter radial distributions of these heavy-light mesons are measured on a 16^3 * 24 lattice at beta=5.7 and a hopping parameter corresponding to a light quark mass about that of the strange quark. Both distributions can be well fitted up to 4 lattice spacings (r approx 0.7 fm) with the exponential form w_i^2(r), where w_i(r)=A exp(-r/r_i). For the charge(c) and matter(m) distributions r_c approx 0.32(2) fm and r_m approx 0.24(2) fm. We also discuss the normalisation of the total charge and matter integrated over all space, finding 1.30(5) and 0.4(1) respectively.

The radial wavefunctions of a heavy-light meson calculated on a lattice

A brief review is given of attempts to understand the energies of four-quark systems calculated on a lattice in terms of nuclear-physics-inspired many-body techniques involving interquark potentials. Results are given for the next stage of this study where the wavefunctions of heavy-light mesons are also calculated on a lattice.

String breaking on a lattice

String breaking is a non-perturbative long-distance feature of QCD that is involved in for example meson decays. A mixing analysis of lattice operators at zero temperature gives the level splitting and mixing energy between the broken and unbroken string states.

String breaking in zero-temperature lattice QCD

The crossing from a static quark-antiquark system to a system of two static-light mesons when the separation of the static quarks is increased is calculated in zero-temperature lattice QCD. The mixing of these two states is extracted from the lattice operators. We also discuss the breaking of an excited string of a hybrid meson.

A variational fit to the lattice energy of two heavy-light mesons

Recent lattice calculations on the interaction energy of two heavy-light mesons (Q^2\bar{q}^2) are interpreted in terms of the potential of the corresponding single heavy-light meson (Q\bar{q}). This model leads to a large overestimate of the binding compared with the lattice data -- unless the basic Q\bar{q} potential is modified to become a four-quark potential.

Interactions of heavy-light mesons

The potential between static-light mesons forming a meson-meson or a meson-antimeson system is calculated in quenched and unquenched SU(3) gauge theory. We use the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action and statistical estimators of light quark propagators with maximal variance reduction. The dependence of the potentials on the light quark spin and isospin and the effect of meson exchange is investigated. Our main motivation is exploration of bound states of two mesons and string breaking. The latter also involves the two-quark potential and the correlation between two-quark and two-meson states.

Two heavy-light mesons on a lattice

The potential between two heavy-light mesons as a function of the heavy quark separation is calculated in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD. We study the case of heavy-light mesons with a static heavy quark and light quarks of mass close to the strange quark mass. We explore the case of light quarks with the same and with different flavours, classified according to the light quark isospin. We evaluate the appropriate light quark exchange contributions and explore the spin-dependence of the interaction. Comparison is made with meson exchange.

Four-quark systems

In order to understand the binding of four static quarks, flux distributions corresponding to these binding energies are studied in quenched SU(2) and also related to a model for the energies. The potential relevant to string breaking between two heavy-light mesons is measured in quenched SU(3) using stochastic estimates of light quark propagators with the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action.

An interquark potential model for multi-quark systems

A potential model for four interacting quarks is constructed in SU(2) from six basis states -- the three partitions into quark pairs, where the gluon field is either in its ground state or first excited state. With four independent parameters to describe the interactions connecting these basis states, it is possible to fit 100 pieces of data -- the ground and first excited states of configurations from six different four-quark geometries calculated on a 16^3*32 lattice.

Four-quark flux distribution and binding in lattice SU(2)

The full spatial distribution of the color fields of two and four static quarks is measured in lattice SU(2) field theory at separations up to 1 fm at beta=2.4. The four-quark case is equivalent to a qbar q qbar q system in SU(2) and is relevant to meson-meson interactions. By subtracting two-body flux tubes from the four-quark distribution we isolate the flux contribution connected with the four-body binding energy. This contribution is further studied using a model for the binding energies. Lattice sum rules for two and four quarks are used to verify the results.

A model for multi-quark systems

As a step towards understanding multi-quark systems abundant in nature we construct a model that reproduces the binding energies of static four-quark systems. These energies have been calculated using SU(2) lattice gauge theory for a set of six different geometries representative of the general case. The model is based on ground and excited state two-body potentials and multi-quark interaction terms.

Flux-tube Structure, Sum Rules and Beta-functions in SU(2)

Action and energy flux-tube profiles are computed, in SU(2) with beta=2.4,2.5, for two quarks up to 1 fm apart and for which the colour fields are in their ground state (A_1g) and the first (E_u) and higher (A'_1g) excited gluonic states. When these profiles are integrated over all space, a scaling comparison is made between the beta=2.4 and 2.5 data. Using sum rules, these integrated forms also permit an estimate to be made of generalised beta-functions giving b(2.4)=-0.312(15), b(2.5)=-0.323(9), f(2.4)=0.65(1) and f(2.5)=0.68(1). When the profiles are integrated only over planes transverse to the interquark line and assuming underlying string features, scaling comparisons are again made near the centres of the interquark line for the largest interquark distances. For the A'_{1g} case, some of the profiles exhibit a 'dip-like' structure characteristic of the Isgur-Paton model.
