Dynamical neutron-star tides: The signature of a mode resonance

Motivated by future opportunities in gravitational-wave astronomy and the ongoing effort to constrain physics under extreme conditions, we consider the signature of individual mode resonances excited during the inspiral of binary systems involving neutron stars. Specifically, we quantify how each resonant mode contributes to the effective (frequency-dependent) tidal deformability. The resonant solution is shown to be accurately represented by a new closed-form approximation, which sheds light on the involved phenomenology, and which should be useful for the development of precise waveform models and future parameter extraction efforts.

The phenomenology of dynamical neutron star tides

We introduce a phenomenological, physically motivated, model for the effective tidal deformability of a neutron star, adding the frequency dependence (associated with the star's fundamental mode of oscillation) that comes into play during the late stages of the binary inspiral. Testing the model against alternative descriptions, we demonstrate that it provides an accurate representation of the dynamical tide up to close to merger. The simplicity of the prescription makes it an attractive alternative for a gravitational-wave data analysis implementation, facilitating an inexpensive construction of a large number of templates covering the relevant parameter space.

The sum of Love: Exploring the effective tidal deformability of neutron stars

Finite size effects come into play during the late stages of neutron star binary inspiral, with the tidal deformability of the supranuclear density matter leaving an imprint on the gravitational-wave signal. As demonstrated in the case of GW170817, this leads to a constraint on the neutron star radius (and hence the equation of state). A deeper understanding of the tidal response requires an analysis of both the state and composition of matter. While these aspects may not have dramatic impact, they could lead to systematic effects that need to be kept in mind as the observational data become more precise. As a step in this direction we explore the role of the composition of matter, which is likely to remain "frozen" during the late stages of binary inspiral. We provide the first in-depth analysis of the problem, including estimates of how composition impacts on the effective tidal deformability. The results provide improved insight into how aspects of physics that tend to be "ignored" impact on binary neutron star gravitational-wave signals.

The g-mode spectrum of reactive neutron star cores

We discuss the impact of nuclear reactions on the spectrum of gravity g-modes of a mature neutron star, demonstrating the anticipated disappearance of these modes when the timescale associated with the oscillations is longer than that of nuclear reactions. This is the expected result, but different aspects of the demonstration may be relevant for related problems in neutron star astrophysics. In particular, we develop the framework required for an explicit implementation of finite-time nuclear reactions in neutron star oscillation problems and demonstrate how this formulation connects with the usual bulk viscosity prescription. We also discuss implications of the absence of very high order g-modes for problems of astrophysical relevance.
