Temperature and doping dependence of high-energy kink in cuprates

It is shown that spectral functions within the extended t-J model, evaluated using the finite-temperature diagonalization of small clusters, exhibit the high-energy kink in single-particle dispersion consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission results on hole-doped cuprates. The kink and waterfall-like features persist up to large doping and to temperatures beyond $J$ hence the origin can be generally attributed to strong correlations and incoherent hole propagation at large binding energies. In contrast, our analysis predicts that electron-doped cuprates do not exhibit these phenomena in photoemission.

Fermi surface and pseudogap in electron-doped cuprates

Spectral functions are evaluated numerically within the t-t'-J model as relevant for electron-doped cuprates. The Fermi surface develops from a pocket-like into a large one with doping. The corresponding pseudogap in the nodal direction is well resolved at low doping and vanishes at intermediate doping. Its presence is strongly temperature dependent and thus connected to longer-range antiferromagnetic correlations. Features including double effective band and optical conductivity are consistent with experiments on electron-doped cuprates without invoking the closing of the Mott-Hubbard gap.

Luttinger sum rule for finite systems of correlated electrons

The validity of the Luttinger sum rule is considered for finite systems of interacting electrons, where the Fermi volume is determined by location of zeroes of Green's function. It is shown that the sum rule in the paramagnetic state is evidently violated within the planar t-J model at low doping while for the related Hubbard model, even in the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping, no clearcut exception is found.

Magnetic collective mode in underdoped cuprates: a phenomenological analysis

The dynamical spin susceptibility as relevant for underdoped cuprates is analysed within the memory-function (MeF) approach. A phenomenological damping function combined with a $T$-independent sum rule is used to describe the anomalous normal state and the resonant peak in the superconducting state, in particular its position and its relative intensity to the normal state. The relation with the random-phase approximation is discussed. The MeF method is generalized to the bilayer system in order to compare with inelastic neutron scattering experiments on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ which alows also for a quantitative comparison. In this context the problem of missing integrated spectral intensity within the experimentally accessible energy window is also discussed.

Momentum dependent relaxation rate and pseudogap in doped magnetic insulators

The spectral functions and corresponding self energies are calculated within the planar t-t'-J model as relevant to hole-doped cuprates using the exact diagonalization method at finite temperatures, combined with the averaging over twisted boundary conditions. Results show truncated Fermi surface at low doping and t'<0 in the antinodal region while the self energy reveals weakly k- and doping dependent anomalous relaxation rate |Σ''(k,ω)|~ a+b|ω| for ω<0, consistent with recent ARPES results, and a pseudogap-generating component of Lorentzian form. The latter is well pronounced at low doping and strongly depends on k and t'.

Spin fluctuations in cuprates as the key to high $T_c$

Spin fluctuations represent the lowest established energy scale in cuprates and are crucial for the understanding of anomalous normal state properties and superconductivity in these materials. The memory-function approach to the spin response in the t-J model is described. Combined with numerical results for small systems it is able to explain the anomalous scaling at low doping and the crossover to the Fermi-liquid-like behavior in overdoped systems. Within the superconducting phase the theory reproduces the resonant peak and its peculiar double dispersion. Such spin fluctuations are then used as the input for the theory of superconductivity within the t-J model, where we show that an important role is played also by the next-nearest-neighbour hopping parameter $t'$.

Spin-fluctuation mechanism of superconductivity

Normal and superconducting state spectral properties of cuprates are theoretically described within the extended t-J model. The method is based on the equations of motion for projected fermionic operators and the mode-coupling approximation for the self-energy matrix. The dynamical spin susceptibility at various doping is considered as an input, extracted from experiments. The analysis shows that the onset of superconductivity is dominated by the spin-fluctuation contribution. The coupling to spin fluctuations directly involves the next-nearest-neighbor hopping t', hence Tc shows a pronounced dependence on t'. The latter can offer an explanation for the variation of Tc among different families of hole-doped cuprates. A formula for maximum Tc is given and it is shown that optimum doping, where maximum Tc is reached, is with increasing -t' progresively increased.

Resistivity and optical conductivity of cuprates within the t-J model

The optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ and the d.c. resistivity $ρ(T)$ within the extended t-J model on a square lattice, as relevant to high-$T_c$ cuprates, are reinvestigated using the exact-diagonalization method for small systems, improved by performing a twisted boundary condition averaging. The influence of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$ is also considered. The behaviour of results at intermediate doping is consistent with a marginal-Fermi-liquid scenario and in the case of $t'=0$ for $ω>T$ follows the power law $σ\propto ω^{-ν}$ with $ν\sim 0.65$ consistent with experiments. At low doping $c_h<0.1$ for $T<J$ $σ(ω)$ develops a shoulder at $ω\sim ω^*$, consistent with the observed mid-infrared peak in experiments, accompanied by a shallow dip for $ω< ω^*$. This region is characterized by the resistivity saturation, whereas a more coherent transport appears at $T < T^*$ producing a more pronounced decrease in $ρ(T)$. The behavior of the normalized resistivity $c_h ρ(T)$ is within a factor of 2 quantitatively consistent with experiments in cuprates.

Double dispersion of the magnetic resonant mode in cuprates

The magnetic excitation spectra in the vicinity of the resonant peak, as observed by inelastic neutron scattering in cuprates, are studied within the memory-function approach. It is shown that at intermediate doping the superconducting gap induces a double dispersion of the peak, with an anisotropy rotated between the downward and upward branch. Similar behavior, but with a spin-wave dispersion at higher energies, is obtained for the low-doping case assuming a large pairing pseudogap.

Spin-fluctuation mechanism of superconductivity in cuprates

The theory of superconductivity within the t-J model, as relevant for cuprates, is developed. It is based on the equations of motion for projected fermionic operators and the mode-coupling approximation for the self-energy matrix. The dynamical spin susceptibility at various doping is considered as an input, extracted from experiments. The analysis shows that the superconductivity onset is dominated by the spin-fluctuation contribution. We show that T_c is limited by the spin-fluctuation scale $Γ$ and shows a pronounced dependence on the next-nearest-neighbor hopping t'. The latter can offer an explanation for the variation of T_c among different families of cuprates.

Scaling of the magnetic response in doped antiferromagnets

A theory of the anomalous $ω/T$ scaling of the dynamic magnetic response in cuprates at low doping is presented. It is based on the memory function representation of the dynamical spin suceptibility in a doped antiferromagnet where the damping of the collective mode is constant and large, whereas the equal-time spin correlations saturate at low $T$. Exact diagonalization results within the t-J model are shown to support assumptions. Consequences, both for the scaling function and the normalization amplitude, are well in agreement with neutron scattering results.

Thermoelectric power in one-dimensional Hubbard model

The thermoelectric power S is studied within the one-dimensional Hubbard model using the linear response theory and the numerical exact-diagonalization method for small systems. While both the diagonal and off-diagonal dynamical correlation functions of particle and energy current are singular within the model even at temperature T>0, S behaves regularly as a function of frequency $ω$ and T. Dependence on the electron density n below the half-filling reveals a change of sign of S at n_0=0.73+/-0.07 due to strong correlations, in the whole T range considered. Approaching half-filling S is hole-like and can become large for U>>t although decreasing with T.

Anomalous scaling of conductivity in integrable fermion systems

We analyze the high-temperature conductivity in one-dimensional integrable models of interacting fermions: the t-V model (anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain) and the Hubbard model, at half-filling in the regime corresponding to insulating ground state. A microcanonical Lanczos method study for finite size systems reveals anomalously large finite-size effects at low frequencies while a frequency-moment analysis indicates a finite d.c. conductivity. This phenomenon also appears in a prototype integrable quantum system of impenetrable particles, representing a strong-coupling limit of both models. In the thermodynamic limit, the two results could converge to a finite d.c. conductivity rather than an ideal conductor or insulator scenario.

Magnetic response of nonmagnetic impurities in cuprates

A theory of the local magnetic response of a nonmagnetic impurity in a doped antiferromagnet, as relevant to the normal state in cuprates, is presented. It is based on the assumption of the overdamped collective mode in the bulk system and on the evidence, that equal-time spin correlations are only weakly renormalized in the vicinity of the impurity. The theory relates the Kondo-like behavior of the local susceptibility to the anomalous temperature dependence of the bulk magnetic susceptibility, where the observed increase of the Kondo temperature with doping reflects the crossover to the Fermi liquid regime and the spatial distribution of the magnetization is given by bulk antiferromagnetic correlations.

Crossover to non-Fermi-liquid spin dynamics in cuprates

The antiferromagnetic spin correlation function $S_{\bf Q}$, the staggered spin susceptibility $χ_{\bf Q}$ and the energy scale $ω_{FL}=S_{\bf Q}/χ_{\bf Q}$ are studied numerically within the t-J model and the Hubbard model, as relevant to cuprates. It is shown that $ω_{FL}$, related to the onset of the non-Fermi-liquid spin response at $T>ω_{FL}$, is very low in the regime below the 'optimum' hole doping $c_h < c_h^* \sim 0.16$, while it shows a steep increase in the overdoped regime. A quantitative analysis of NMR spin-spin relaxation-rate $1/T_{2G}$ for various cuprates reveals a similar behavior, indicating on a sharp, but continuous, crossover between a Fermi-liquid and a non-Fermi-liquid behavior as a function of doping.

Thermodynamic and thermoelectric properties of high-temperature cuprate superconductors in the stripe phase

We examine the thermodynamic and thermoelectric properties in the stripe phase of high-Tc cuprates, by using the finite-temperature Lanczos technique for the t-J model with a potential that stabilizes vertical charge stripes. When the stripe potential is turned on, the entropy is suppressed as a consequence of the formation of one-dimensional charge stripes accompanied by an enhancement of antiferromagnetic spin correlation in the spin domains. The stripe formation leads also to weak temperature dependence of the chemical potential, leading to the suppression of the thermoelectric power. The suppression of the entropy and thermoelectric power is consistent with experimental data in the stripe phase of La_{1.6-x}Nd_{0.4}Sr_xCuO_4.

Transport in one dimensional quantum systems

In this Chapter, we present recent theoretical developments on the finite temperature transport of one dimensional electronic and magnetic quantum systems as described by a variety of prototype models. In particular, we discuss the unconventional transport and dynamic - spin, electrical, thermal - properties implied by the integrability of models as the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain or Hubbard. Furthermore, we address the implication of these developments to experimental studies and theoretical descriptions by low energy effective theories.

Finite Temperature Dynamical Correlations using the Microcanonical Ensemble and the Lanczos Algorithm

We show how to generalise the zero temperature Lanczos method for calculating dynamical correlation functions to finite temperatures. The key is the microcanonical ensemble, which allows us to replace the involved canonical ensemble with a single appropriately chosen state; in the thermodynamic limit it provides the same physics as the canonical ensemble but with the evaluation of a single expectation value. We can employ the same system sizes as for zero temperature, but whereas the statistical fluctuations present in small systems are prohibitive, the spectra of the largest system sizes are surprisingly smooth. We investigate, as a test case, the spin conductivity of the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg model and in particular we present a comparison of spectra obtained by the canonical and microcanonical ensemble methods.
