Matrix strings from generalized Yang-Mills theory on arbitrary Riemann surfaces

We quantize pure 2d Yang-Mills theory on an arbitrary Riemann surface in the gauge where the field strength is diagonal. Twisted sectors originate, as in Matrix string theory, from permutations of the eigenvalues around homotopically non-trivial loops. These sectors, that must be discarded in the usual quantization due to divergences occurring when two eigenvalues coincide, can be consistently kept if one modifies the action by introducing a coupling of the field strength to the space-time curvature. This leads to a generalized Yang-Mills theory whose action reduces to the usual one in the limit of zero curvature. After integrating over the non-diagonal components of the gauge fields, the theory becomes a free string theory (sum over unbranched coverings) with a U(1) gauge theory on the world-sheet. This is shown to be equivalent to a lattice theory with a gauge group which is the semi-direct product of S_N and U(1)^N. By using well known results on the statistics of coverings, the partition function on arbitrary Riemann surfaces and the kernel functions on surfaces with boundaries are calculated. Extensions to include branch points and non-abelian groups on the world-sheet are briefly commented upon.

When QCD strings can break

The confining string in presence of dynamical quarks can behave in different ways, depending on the quark masses and on the number N_f N_c of charge species. For light masses and large N_f N_c the creation of quark pairs produces microscopic holes in the world- sheet swept by the string; as a consequence string breaking is invisible in the Wilson loop, while is manifest in operators composed of disjoint sources, as observed in many numerical experiments. Similar arguments apply also to the adjoint string breaking. For larger quark masses it is possible that the string world-sheet undergoes a transition to a tearing phase, characterized by macroscopic holes, which manifest themselves through a visible string breaking effect also in the Wilson loop, as observed in 2+1 D SU(2) gauge theory with two flavors.

Non-perturbative states in the three-dimensional phi^4 theory

We study the spectrum of massive excitations of the three-dimensional phi^4 and Ising models, in the broken-symmetry phase. Using a variational method, we show that the spectrum contains all the 0+ states that one expects from duality with the glueball spectrum of the Z(2) gauge model. From the point of view of continuum phi^4 theory, we show that at least one of the states we find has a non-perturbative origin.

The confining string and its breaking in QCD

We point out that the world sheet swept by the confining string in presence of dynamical quarks can belong to two different phases, depending on the number of charge species and the quark masses. When it lies in the normal phase (as opposed to the tearing one) the string breaking is invisible in the Wilson loop, while is manifest in operators composed of disjoint sources, as observed in many numerical experiments. We work out an explicit formula for the correlator of Polyakov loops at finite temperature, which is then compared with recent lattice data, both in the quenched case and in presence of dynamical quarks. The analysis in the quenched case shows that the free bosonic string model describes accurately the data for distances larger than ~ 0.75 fm. In the unquenched case we derive predictions on the dependence of the static potential on the temperature which are compatible with the lattice data.

Non-perturbative states in the 3D phi^4 theory

We show that the spectrum of the three dimensional phi^4 theory in the broken symmetry phase contains non-perturbative states. We determine the spectrum using a new variational technique based on the introduction of operators corresponding to different length scales. The presence of non-perturbative states accounts for the discrepancy between Monte Carlo and perturbative results for the universal ratio xi/xi_2nd. We introduce and study some universal amplitude ratios related to the overlap of the spin operator with the states of the spectrum. The analysis is performed for the phi^4 theory regularized on a lattice and for the Ising model. This is a nice verification of the fact that universality reaches far beyond critical exponents. Finally, we show that the spectrum of the model, including non-perturbative states, accurately matches the glueball spectrum in the Z(2) gauge model, which is related to the Ising model through a duality transformation.

2D Yang-Mills Theory as a Matrix String Theory

Quantization of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a torus in the gauge where the field strength is diagonal leads to twisted sectors that are completely analogous to the ones that originate long string states in Matrix String Theory. If these sectors are taken into account the partition function is different from the standard one found in the literature and the invariance of the theory under modular transformations of the torus appears to hold in a stronger sense. The twisted sectors are in one-to-one correspondence with the coverings of the torus without branch points, so they define by themselves a string theory. A possible duality between this string theory and the Gross-Taylor string is discussed, and the problems that one encounters in generalizing this approach to interacting strings are pointed out. This talk is based on a previous paper by the same authors, but it contains some new results and a better interpretation of the results already obtained.

Matrix string states in pure 2d Yang Mills theories

We quantize pure 2d Yang-Mills theory on a torus in the gauge where the field strength is diagonal. Because of the topological obstructions to a global smooth diagonalization, we find string-like states in the spectrum similar to the ones introduced by various authors in Matrix string theory. We write explicitly the partition function, which generalizes the one already known in the literature, and we discuss the role of these states in preserving modular invariance. Some speculations are presented about the interpretation of 2d Yang-Mills theory as a Matrix string theory.

Critical correlators of three-dimensional gauge theories at finite temperature: exact results from universality

According to the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture, a three-dimensional gauge theory undergoing a continuous deconfinement transition is in the same universality class as a two-dimensional statistical model with order parameter taking values in the center of the gauge group. This allows us to use conformal field theory techniques to evaluate exactly various correlation functions at the critical point. In particular, we show that the plaquette operator of the gauge theory is mapped into the energy operator of the dimensionally reduced model. The plaquette expectation value in presence of static sources for three-dimensional SU(2) and SU(3) theories at the deconfinement temperature can be exactly evaluated, providing some new insight about the structure of the color flux tube in mesons and baryons.

Critical behavior of 3D SU(2) gauge theory at finite temperature: exact results from universality

We show that universality arguments, namely the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture, allow one to obtain exact results on the critical behavior of 3D SU(2) gauge theory at the finite temperature deconfinement transition, through a mapping into the 2D Ising model. In particular, we consider the finite-size scaling behavior of the plaquette operator, which can be mapped into the energy operator of the 2D Ising model. We obtain exact predictions for the dependence of the plaquette expectation value on the size and shape of the lattice and we compare them to Monte Carlo results, finding complete agreement. We discuss the application of this method to the computation of more general correlators of the plaquette operator at criticality, and its relevance to the study of the color flux tube structure.

Interaction effects in the spectrum of the three-dimensional Ising model

The two-point correlation functions of statistical models show in general both poles and cuts in momentum space. The former correspond to the spectrum of massive excitations of the model, while the latter originate from interaction effects, namely creation and annihilation of virtual pairs of excitations. We discuss the effect of such interactions on the long distance behavior of correlation functions in configuration space, focusing on certain time-slice operators which are commonly used to extract the spectrum. For the 3D Ising model in the scaling region of the broken-symmetry phase, a one-loop calculation shows that the interaction effects on time-slice correlations is non negligible for distances up to a few times the correlation length, and should therefore be taken into account when analysing Monte Carlo data.

Spectrum of the gauge Ising model in three dimensions

We present a high precision Monte Carlo study of the spectrum of the Ising gauge theory in three dimensions in the confining phase. Using state of the art Monte Carlo techniques we are able to accurately determine up to three masses in a single channel. We compare our results with the SU(2) spectrum and with the prediction of the Isgur-Paton model. Our data strongly support the conjecture that the glueball spectrum is described by some type of flux tube model. We also compare the spectrum with some recent results for the correlation length in the 3d spin Ising model. This analysis sheds light on some nontrivial features of the duality transformation.

The Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture for the plaquette operator

According to the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture, a (d+1)-dimensional pure gauge theory undergoing a continuous deconfinement transition is in the same universality class as a d-dimensional statistical model with order parameter taking values in the center of the gauge group. We show that the plaquette operator of the gauge theory is mapped into the energy operator of the statistical model. For d=2, this identification allows us to use conformal field theory techniques to evaluate exactly the correlation functions of the plaquette operator at the critical point. In particular, we can evaluate exactly the plaquette expectation value in presence of static sources, which gives some new insight in the structure of the color flux tube in mesons and baryons.

String Effects in the Wilson Loop: a high precision numerical test

We test numerically the effective string description of the infrared limit of lattice gauge theories in the confining regime. We consider the 3d Z(2) lattice gauge theory, and we define ratios of Wilson loops such that the predictions of the effective string theory do not contain any adjustable parameters. In this way we are able to obtain a degree of accuracy high enough to show unambiguously that the flux--tube fluctuations are described, in the infrared limit, by an effective bosonic string theory.

Quantum fluctuations of the color flux tube

The quantum fluctuations of the flux tube joining two static sources in the confining phase of a lattice gauge theory are described by an effective string theory. The predictions of the latter for ratios of Wilson loops of equal perimeter do not contain any free parameters, and can be computed exactly for large Wilson loops. We compare these predictions with numerical results in 3D $Z_2$ gauge theory, finding complete agreement.

Finite Size Effects in Fluid Interfaces

It is shown that finite size effects in the free energy of a rough interface of the 3D Ising and three--state Potts models are well described by the capillary wave model at {\em two--loop} order. The agreement between theoretical predictions and Monte Carlo simulations strongly supports the idea of the universality of this description of order--order interfaces in 3D statistical systems above the roughening temperature.

Critical Boundary Conditions for the Effective String

Gauge systems in the confining phase induce constraints at the boundaries of the effective string, which rule out the ordinary bosonic string even with short distance modifications. Allowing topological excitations, corresponding to winding around the colour flux tube, produces at the quantum level a universal free fermion string with a boundary phase nu=1/4. This coincides with a model proposed some time ago in order to fit Monte Carlo data of 3D and 4D Lattice gauge systems better. A universal value of the thickness of the colour flux tube is predicted.
