The role of correlation entropy in nuclear fusion in liquid lithium, indium and mercury

Nuclear fusion cross-sections considerably higher than corresponding theoretical predictions are observed in low-energy experiments with metal matrix targets and accelerated deuteron beams. The cross-section increment is significantly higher for liquid than for solid targets. We propose that the same two-body correlation entropy used in evaluating the metal melting entropy explains the large liquid-solid difference of the effective screening potential that parameterizes the cross-section increment. This approach is applied to the specific case of the $^6$Li(d,$α$)$^4$He reaction, whose measured screening potential liquid-solid difference is $(235 \pm 63)$ eV. Cross sections in the two metals with the highest two-body correlation entropy (In and Hg) have not yet been measured: increments of the cross sections in liquid relative to the ones in solid metals are estimated with the same procedure.

Non-extensive thermostatistics approach to metal melting entropy

A generalized Mott relation of metal melting entropy is derived by means of non-extensive solid and liquid quantum entropy that we calculate from grand partition functions of localized ordered quantum solid and of disordered quantum Boltzmann liquid. For each of the 18 elements considered the entropic parameter $q_m$, depending on particle correlations, is deduced such that a better agreement is obtained between calculated non-extensive metal melting entropy and available experimental data. The non-extensive entropic parameter makes the difference between normal and anomalous metals. Therefore, also those not reported here should belong to one of the two classes. Possible applications to condensed matter, Earth and other solar planets seismology are mentioned.

Nonextensive statistical effects in the hadron to quark-gluon phase transition

We investigate the relativistic equation of state of hadronic matter and quark-gluon plasma at finite temperature and baryon density in the framework of the nonextensive statistical mechanics, characterized by power-law quantum distributions. We study the phase transition from hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma by requiring the Gibbs conditions on the global conservation of baryon number and electric charge fraction. We show that nonextensive statistical effects play a crucial role in the equation of state and in the formation of mixed phase also for small deviations from the standard Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics.

Nonextensive relativistic nuclear and subnuclear equation of state

Following the basic prescriptions of the Tsallis' nonextensive relativistic thermodynamics, we investigate the relevance of nonextensive statistical effects on the relativistic nuclear and subnuclear equation of state. In this framework, we study the first order phase transition from hadronic to quark-gluon plasma phase by requiring the Gibbs conditions on the global conservation of the electric and the baryon charges. The relevance of small deviations from the standard extensive statistics is investigated in the context of intermediate and high energy heavy-ion collisions.

Nuclear problems in astrophysical q-plasmas and environments

Experimental measurements in terrestrial laboratory, space and astrophysical observations of variation and fluctuation of nuclear decay constants, measurements of large enhancements in fusion reaction rate of deuterons implanted in metals and electron capture by nuclei in solar core indicate that these processes depend on the environment where take place and possibly also on the fluctuation of some extensive parameters and eventually on stellar energy production. Electron screening is the first important environment effect. We need to develop a treatment beyond the Debye-Huckel screening approach, commonly adopted within global thermodynamic equilibrium. Advances in the description of these processes can be obtained by means of q-thermostatistics and/or superstatistics for metastable states. This implies to handle without ambiguities the case q<1.

Anomalous enhancements of low-energy fusion rates in plasmas: the role of ion momentum distributions and inhomogeneous screening

Non-resonant fusion cross-sections significantly higher than corresponding theoretical predictions are observed in low-energy experiments with deuterated matrix target. Models based on thermal effects, electron screening, or quantum-effect dispersion relations have been proposed to explain these anomalous results: none of them appears to satisfactory reproduce the experiments. Velocity distributions are fundamental for the reaction rates and deviations from the Maxwellian limit could play a central role in explaining the enhancement. We examine two effects: an increase of the tail of the target Deuteron momentum distribution due to the Galitskii-Yakimets quantum uncertainty effect, which broadens the energy-momentum relation; and spatial fluctuations of the Debye-Hückel radius leading to an effective increase of electron screening. Either effect leads to larger reaction rates especially large at energies below a few keV, reducing the discrepancy between observations and theoretical expectations.

Nuclear electron capture rate in stellar interiors and the case of 7Be

Nuclear electron capture rate from continuum in an astrophysical plasma environment (like solar core) is calculated using a modified Debye-Huckel screening potential and the related non-Gaussian q-distribution of electron momenta. For q=1 the well-known Debye-Huckel results are recovered. The value of q can be derived from the fluctuation of number of particles and temperature inside the Debye sphere. For 7Be continuum electron capture in solar core, we find an increase of 7 -- 10 percent over the rate calculated with standard Debye-Huckel potential. The consequence of this results is a reduction of the same percentage of the SSM 8B solar neutrino flux, leaving unchanged the SSM 7Be flux.

Analytical predictions of non-Gaussian distribution parameters for stellar plasmas

Stimulated by the recent debate on the physical relevance and on the predictivity of q-Gaussian formalism, we present specific analytical expressions for the parameters characterizing non-Gaussian distributions, such as the nonextensive parameter q, expressions that we have proposed for different physical systems, an important example being plasmas in the stellar cores.

Modified Debye-Huckel Electron Shielding and Penetration Factor

Screened potential, modified by non standard electron cloud distributions responsible for the shielding effect on fusion of reacting nuclei in astrophysical plasmas, is derived. The case of clouds with depleted tails in space coordinates is discussed. The modified screened potential is obtained both from statistical mechanics arguments based on fluctuations of the inverse of the Debye-Huckel radius and from the solution of a Bernoulli equation used in generalized statistical mechanics. Plots and tables useful in evaluating penetration probability at any energy are provided.

Retour sur les lingots de plomb de Comacchio (Ferrara, Italie) en passant par l'archeometrie et l'epigraphie

Up to now the origin of 102 lead ingots of the Comacchio (Ferrara, Italy) relict, found in 1981, has been difficult to solve and different hypothesis have been proposed. Recently 20 representative ingots have been analysed at the European JRC Laboratory of Ispra(Italy) and the lead isotope signature determined. From the performed results we may suggest the ores of Cartagena-Mazarron or Sierra Almagrera (Sud-East of Spain) be the probable lead origin of ingots. Archaeological examination and epigraphic arguments indicate Cartagena-Mazarron as the most probable of the two mine regions. The role of different persons, whose names are reported on the ingots, is discussed under a commercial point of view. We try to understand the commercial travel of the ship and the presence of the ingots in the Nord Adriatic sea.

Nonextensive Interpretation Of Radiative Recombination In Electron Cooling

An interest for the low-energy range of the nonextensive distribution function arises from the study of radiative recombination in electron cooling devices in particle accelerators, whose experimentally measured reaction rates are much above the theoretical prediction. The use of generalized distributions, that differ from the Maxwellian in the low energy part (due to subdiffusion between electron and ion bunches), may account for the observed rate enhancement. In this work, we consider the isotropic distribution function and we propose a possible experiment for verifying the existence of a cut-off in the generalized momentum distribution, by measuring the spectrum of the X-rays emitted from radiative recombination reactions.

Nonextensive statistical effects on nuclear astrophysics and many-body problems

Density and temperature conditions in many stellar core (like the solar core) imply the presence of nonideal plasma effects with memory and long-range interactions between particles. This aspect suggests the possibility that the stellar core could not be in a global thermodynamical equilibrium but satisfies the conditions of a metastable state with a stationary (nonextensive) power law distribution function among ions. The order of magnitude of the deviation from the standard Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution can be derived microscopically by considering the presence of random electrical microfields in the stellar plasma. We show that such a nonextensive statistical effect can be very relevant in many nuclear astrophysical problems.

Metastable and stable equilibrium states of stellar electron-nuclear plasmas

By minimizing free energy density, we show that the stellar core of a hydrogen burning star is not in a global thermodynamical equilibrium unless density, temperature, mass and composition assume given values. The core (as the solar interior) may be viewed more appropriately as a metastable state with very long lifetime. Slightly non-extensive distribution function could be the natural distribution for a weakly non-ideal plasma like a stellar core and represents a more appropriate approximation to this system than a Maxwellian distribution, without affecting bulk properties of stars.

Quantum-tail effect in low energy d+d reaction in deuterated metals

The Bochum experimental enhancement of the d+d fusion rate in a deuterated metal matrix at low incident energies is explained by the quantum broadening of the momentum-energy dispersion relation and consequent modification of the high-momentum tail of the distribution function from an exponential to a power-law.

Results of numerical simulations of fusion rate d(d,p)t, for low-energy deuteron beam, colliding with deuterated metallic matrix (Raiola et al. Phys. Lett.B 547 (2002) 193 and Eur. Phys J. A 13 (2002) 377) confirm analytical estimate given in Coraddu et al. nucl-th/0401043, taking into account quantum tails in the momentum distribution function of target particles, and predict an enhanced astrophysical factor in the 1 keV region in qualitative agreement with experiments.

Temperature dependence of modified CNO nuclear reaction rates in dense stellar plasmas

We study the dependence of the CNO nuclear reaction rates on temperature, in the range of $10^7÷10^8$ K, the typical range of temperature evolution from a Sun-like star towards a white dwarf. We show that the temperature dependence of the CNO nuclear reaction rates is strongly affected by the presence of non-extensive statistical effects in the dense stellar core. A very small deviation from the Maxwell-Boltzmann particle distribution implies a relevant enhancement of the CNO reaction rate and could explain the presence of heavier elements (e.g. Fe, Mg) in the final composition of a white dwarf core. Such a behavior is consistent with the recent experimental upper limit to the fraction of energy that the Sun produces via the CNO fusion cycle.

Nonextensive statistical effects on the relativistic nuclear equation of state

Following the basic prescriptions of the Tsallis' nonextensive thermodynamics, we study the relativistic nonextensive thermodynamics and the equation of state for a perfect gas at the equilibrium. The obtained results are used to study the relativistic nuclear equation of state in the hadronic and in the quark-gluon plasma phase. We show that small deviations from the standard extensive statistics imply remarkable effects into the shape of the equation of state.
