Influence of local structure on magnetic properties of Layered Cobaltites PrBaCo_2O{5+δ}, δ> 0.5

The effect of local structure on the magnetic and transport properties of the layered perovskites has been investigated. The samples PrBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5+δ}$, ($δ$ = 0.80 and 0.67) though crystallize in the same 112 type tetragonal structure have different magnetic ground states. Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy has been employed to explain the changes in magnetic interactions based on the rotation and tilting of CoO polyhedra in these oxygen rich double perovskites.

Effect of Oxygen Content on Magnetic Properties of Layered Cobaltites PrBaCo2O5+δ

The effect of oxygen content on the magnetic properties of the layered perovskites has been investigated. The samples, PrBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5+δ}$ (0.35 $\leq δ\leq$ 0.80) were prepared by sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction and DC magnetization. A detailed magnetic phase diagram for PrBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5+δ}$ is presented. It is found that unlike in the case of heavier rare-earths, ferromagnetic interactions are present at all temperatures below Tc and even in the antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Moreover, in compounds with lower oxygen content, short range ferromagnetic interactions are present even above Tc. This dependence of magnetic properties on oxygen content in these layered perovskites has been linked to the changes in polyhedra around the Co ions.

Structure, Transport and Magnetic properties in La$_{2x}$Sr$_{2-2x}$Co$_{2x}$Ru$_{2-2x}$O$_{6}$

The perovskite solid solutions of the type La$_{2x}$Sr$_{2-2x}$Co$_{2x}$Ru$_{2-2x}$O$_{6}$ with 0.25 $\leq$ x $ \leq $ 0.75 have been investigated for their structural, magnetic and transport properties. All the compounds crystallize in double perovskite structure. The magnetization measurements indicate a complex magnetic ground state with strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Resistivity of the compounds is in confirmation with hopping conduction behaviour though differences are noted especially for $x$ = 0.4 and 0.6. Most importantly, low field (50Oe) magnetization measurements display negative magnetization during the zero field cooled cycle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate presence of Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ and Ru$^{4+}$/Ru$^{5+}$ redox couples in all compositions except $x$ = 0.5. Presence of magnetic ions like Ru$^{4+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ gives rise to additional ferromagnetic (Ru-rich) and antiferromagnetic sublattices and also explains the observed negative magnetization.

Effect of B-site Dopants on Magnetic and Transport Properties of LaSrCoRuO$_6$

Effect of Co, Ru and Cu substitution at B and B' sites on the magnetic and transport properties of LaSrCoRuO$_6$ have been investigated. All the doped compositions crystallize in the monoclinic structure in the space group $P2_1/n$ indicating a double perovskite structure. While the magnetization and conductivity increase in Co and Ru doped compounds, antiferromagnetism is seen to strengthen in the Cu doped samples. These results are explained on the basis of a competition between linear Co-O-Ru-O-Co and perpendicular Co-O-O-Co antiferromagnetic interactions and due to formation of Ru-O-Ru ferromagnetic networks.

Disorder Induced Negative Magnetization in LaSrCoRuO6

This paper reports effect of thermally induced disorder on the magnetic properties of LaSrCoRuO6 double perovskite. While the ordered sample is antiferromagnetic, the disordered sample exhibits negative values of magnetization measured in low applied fields. Isothermal magnetization on this sample shows hysteresis due to presence of ferromagnetic interactions. Based on neutron diffraction and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) studies, these results have been interpreted to be due disorder in site occupancy of Co and Ru leading to octahedral distortions and formation of Ru-O-Ru ferromagnetic linkages. Below 150K these ferromagnetic Ru spins polarize the Co spins in a direction opposite to that of the applied field resulting in observed negative magnetization.

Hybridization Effects in Ni-Mn based Shape Memory Alloys: XAFS Study

Martensitic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys are known to depend up on structural modulations and associated changes in the Fermi surface. These modulations although periodic and spanning over multiple unit cells, involve movement of atoms typically of the order of 0.01A. Therefore X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) is an ideal tool to map both, local atomic movements and changes in density of states (DOS) due to changing hybridization as the system transforms from austenitic to martensitic phase. This paper presents a compilation of our XAFS studies on the Ni-Mn based shape memory alloys. A complete description of the changes in local structure around the constituent metal ions in the following alloy compositions: Ni2+xMn1-xGa, Ni2Mn1.4Sn0.6 and Ni2Mn1.4In0.6 in the austenitic and martensitic phases have been obtained. The results give the new experimental evidence for the crucial hybridization component that influences and leads to structural transition in these Ni-Mn based Heusler alloys.

Local atomic arrangement and martensitic transformation in Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{35}$In$_{15}$: An EXAFS Study

Heusler alloys that undergo martensitic transformation in ferromagnetic state are of increasing scientific and technological interest. These alloys show large magnetic field induced strains upon martensitic phase change thus making it a potential candidate for magneto-mechanical actuation. The crystal structure of martensite is an important factor that affects both the magnetic anisotropy and mechanical properties of such materials. Moreover, the local chemical arrangement of constituent atoms is vital in determining the overall physical properties. Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{35}$In$_{15}$ is one such ferromagnetic shape memory alloy that displays exotic properties like large magnetoresistance at moderate field values. In this work, we present the extended x-ray absorption fine-structure measurements (EXAFS) on the bulk Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{35}$In$_{15}$ which reveal the local structural change that occurs upon phase transformation. The change in the bond lengths between different atomic species helps in understanding the type of hybridization which is an important factor in driving such Ni-Mn based systems towards martensitic transformation.

Factors influencing the Martensitic interactions in Ni50Mn35Sn15: An EXAFS study

Extended x-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements have been carried out on Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{35}$Sn$_{15}$ in the austenitic and martensitic phase. The temperatures associated with structural and magnetic phase transformations are obtained from magnetization measurements. The system orders ferromagnetically below 319 K while the structural phase transition occurs at T$_M$ $\sim$ 200 K. EXAFS measurements have been carried out at Mn and Ni K-edges and changes associated with respect to the local structure of these absorbing atoms are compared. Significant changes in the nearest neighbour interactions are seen as the system transits to the low temperature martensitic phase. EXAFS provides evidence for local structural distortion even in the cubic phase that is not seen from the x-ray diffraction studies. The results obtained are understood in terms of changing hybridization between the constituent atoms that influence the electronic structure at the Fermi level, associated with the austenitic-to-martensitic transition.

Local Atomic Structure of Martensitic Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga: An EXAFS Study

The local atomic structure of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga with 0 $\le$ $x$ $\le$ 0.16 alloys was explored using Mn and Ga K-edge Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurement. Inorder to study the atomic re-arrangements that occur upon martensitic transformation, room temperature and low temperature EXAFS were recorded. The changes occurring in the L2$_1$ unit cell and the bond lengths obtained from the analysis enables us to determine the modulation amplitudes over which the constituent atoms move giving rise to shuffling of the atomic planes in the modulated structure. The EXAFS analysis also suggests the changes in hybridization of Ga-$p$ and Ni-$d$ orbitals associated with the local symmetry breaking upon undergoing martensitic transition.

Composition and temperature dependence of the thermoelectric power of Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga alloys

The thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements have been carried out to investigate the changes in the electronic structure associated with the intermartensitic and martensitic transitions in Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga (0 $\le$ x $\le$ 0.19). The samples have been characterized by a.c. magnetic susceptibility measurements. The correlation between the TEP and the microstructural changes sensitive to the increasing Ni content in Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga has been investigated. The changes in the density of states as reflected in the temperature variation of the TEP are consistent with the conclusions drawn from the Jahn-Teller mechanism of lattice distortion.

Mechanism for modulated structures in Ni-Mn-Ga: An EXAFS Study

The local atomic structure of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys was explored using Mn and Ga K-edge extended X-ray fine structure (EXAFS) measurement. The changes occuring in the L1$_0$ sub-cell of the martensitic unit cell and the bond lengths obtained from the analysis enables us to propose a scheme for the structural distortions responsible for the modulations and shuffling of the atomic planes in the martensitic phase of Ni-Mn-Ga system. The EXAFS analysis also suggests the changes in hybridization of Ga-$p$ and Ni-$d$ orbitals associated with the local symmetry breaking upon undergoing martensitic transition.

Low Temperature Neutron Diffraction Study of MnTe

Investigation of transport and magnetic properties of MnTe at low temperatures sInvestigation of transport and magnetic properties of MnTe at low temperatures showed anomalies like negative coefficient of resistance below 100K and a sharp rise in susceptibility at around 83K similar to a ferromagnetic transition. Low temperature powder neutron diffraction experiments were therefore carried out to understand the underlying phenomena responsible for such anomalous behavior. Our study indicates that the rise in susceptibility at low temperatures is due to strengthening of ferromagnetic interaction within the plane over the inter plane antiferromagnetic interactions.

Inelastic Neutron scattering in CeSi_{2-x}Ga_x ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compounds

Inelastic neutron scattering investigation on ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compounds belonging to CeSi_{2-x}Ga_{x}, x = 0.7, 1.0 and 1.3, system is reported. The thermal evolution of the quasielastic response shows that the Kondo interactions dominate over the RKKY interactions with increase in Ga concentration from 0.7 to 1.3. This is related to the increase in k-f hybridization with increasing Ga concentration. The high energy response indicates the ground state to be split by crystal field in all three compounds. Using the experimental results we have calculated the crystal field parameters in all three compounds studied here.
