Characterization of spatial Schmidt modes in high-gain SU(1,1) interferometers

Multimode quantum light has promising applications in many areas of physics, such as quantum communications and quantum computing. However, its multimode nature also makes it challenging to measure its properties. Recently [Optica Quantum 3, 36 (2025)], a technique for the simultaneous measurement of squeezing of multiple broadband modes based on a phase-sensitive amplification approach was experimentally implemented using a setup that effectively corresponds to an SU(1,1) interferometer. Here, we aim to provide a complete theoretical analysis of the modal structure of SU(1,1) interferometers (generally unbalanced) and a detailed theoretical formal derivation of the framework for this technique. Utilizing the joint Schmidt decomposition of the transfer functions, we investigate the shape and phase profiles of the modes of the SU(1,1) interferometer and its components [parametric down-conversion (PDC) sections] for different parametric gain regimes. We discover a complicated interplay between the PDC modes and the modes of the entire interferometer, and analyze it by using their overlap coefficients as a similarity measure. Finally, we develop a rigorous processing method for the aforementioned multimode squeezing measurement technique and discuss necessary approximations to make this method experimentally feasible.

Amplified quantum non-demolition measurements of optical quadratures using quadratic nonlinearity

Quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement is a special technique that allows to evade quantum back-action. In this paper, we propose a new QND measurement scheme of the optical field quadratures based on the non-degenerate optical parametric amplifier. We show that for a proper set of parameters, this scheme can realize a new type of QND measurement, where the quadrature of interest is amplified, but still does not subject to any back action.

Schmidt modes carrying orbital angular momentum generated by cascaded systems pumped with Laguerre-Gaussian beams

Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) modes are an important resource used in various branches of quantum science and technology due to their unique helical structure and countably infinite basis. Generating light that simultaneously carries high-order orbital angular momenta and exhibits quantum correlations is a challenging task. In this work, we present a theoretical approach to the generation of correlated Schmidt modes carrying OAM via parametric down-conversion (PDC) in cascaded nonlinear systems (nonlinear interferometers) pumped by Laguerre-Gaussian beams. We demonstrate how the number of generated modes and their population can be controlled by varying the pump parameters, the gain of the PDC process and the distance between the crystals. We investigate the angular displacement sensitivity of these interferometers and demonstrate that it can overcome the classical shot noise limit.

Phase sensitivity of spatially broadband high-gain SU(1,1) interferometers

Nonlinear interferometers are promising tools for quantum metrology, as they are characterized by an improved phase sensitivity scaling compared to linear interferometers operating with classical light. However, the multimodeness of the light generated in these interferometers results in the destruction of their phase sensitivity, requiring advanced interferometric configurations for multimode light. Moreover, in contrast to the single-mode case, time-ordering effects play an important role for the high-gain regime in the multimode scenario and must be taken into account for a correct estimation of the phase sensitivity. In this work, we present a theoretical description of spatially multimode SU(1,1) interferometers operating at low and high parametric gains. Our approach is based on a step-by-step solution of a system of integro-differential equations for each nonlinear interaction region. We focus on interferometers with diffraction compensation, where focusing elements such as a parabolic mirror are used to compensate for the divergence of the light. We investigate plane-wave and Gaussian pumping and show that for any parametric gain, there exists a region of phases for which the phase sensitivity surpasses the standard shot-noise scaling and discuss the regimes where it approaches the Heisenberg scale. Finally, we arrive at insightful analytical expressions for the phase sensitivity that are valid for both low and high parametric gain and demonstrate how it depends on the number of spatial modes of the system.

Quantum optical coherence: From linear to nonlinear interferometers

Interferometers provide a highly sensitive means to investigate and exploit the coherence properties of light in metrology applications. However, interferometers come in various forms and exploit different properties of the optical states within. In this paper, we introduce a classification scheme that characterizes any interferometer based on the number of involved nonlinear elements by studying their influence on single-photon and photon-pair states. Several examples of specific interferometers from these more general classes are discussed, and the theory describing the expected first-order and second-order coherence measurements for single-photon and single-photon-pair input states is summarized and compared. These theoretical predictions are then tested in an innovative experimental setup that is easily able to switch between implementing an interferometer consisting of only one or two nonlinear elements. The resulting singles and coincidence rates are measured in both configurations and the results are seen to fit well with the presented theory. The measured results of coherence are tied back to the presented classification scheme, revealing that our experimental design can be useful in gaining insight into the properties of the various interferometeric setups containing different degrees of nonlinearity.

Flexible source of correlated photons based on LNOI rib waveguides

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) has a great potential for photonic integrated circuits, providing substantial versatility in design of various integrated components. To properly use these components in the implementation of different quantum protocols, photons with different properties are required. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate a flexible source of correlated photons built on the LNOI waveguide of a special geometry. This source is based on the parametric down-conversion (PDC) process, in which the signal and idler photons are generated at the telecom wavelength and have different spatial profiles and polarizations, but the same group velocities. Such features facilitate electro-optical manipulations with photons and, at the same time, do not require an additional compensation for the time delay. We show how the spectral properties of the generated photons and the number of their frequency modes can be controlled depending on the pump characteristics and the waveguide length. Finally, we discuss a special regime, in which narrowband light with strong frequency correlations is generated at the telecom wavelength.

Steady states of $Λ$-type three-level systems excited by quantum light in lossy cavities

The interaction between quantum light and matter is being intensively studied for systems that are enclosed in high-$Q$ cavities which strongly enhance the light-matter coupling. However, for many applications, cavities with lower $Q$-factors are preferred due to the increased spectral width of the cavity mode. Here, we investigate the interaction between quantum light and matter represented by a $Λ$-type three-level system in lossy cavities, assuming that cavity losses are the dominant loss mechanism. We demonstrate that cavity losses lead to non-trivial steady states of the electronic occupations that can be controlled by the loss rate and the initial statistics of the quantum fields. The mechanism of formation of such steady states can be understood on the basis of the equations of motion. Analytical expressions for steady states and their numerical simulations are presented and discussed.

Bright correlated twin-beam generation and radiation shaping in high-gain parametric down-conversion with anisotropy

Uniaxial anisotropy in nonlinear birefringent crystals limits the efficiency of nonlinear optical interactions and breaks the spatial symmetry of light generated in the parametric down-conversion (PDC) process. Therefore, this effect is usually undesirable and must be compensated for. However, high gain may be used to overcome the destructive role of anisotropy and instead to use it for the generation of bright two-mode correlated twin-beams. In this work, we provide a rigorous theoretical description of the spatial properties of bright squeezed light in the presence of strong anisotropy. We investigate a single-crystal and a two-crystal configuration and demonstrate the generation of bright correlated twin-beams in such systems at high gain due to anisotropy. We explore the mode structure of the generated light and show how anisotropy, together with crystal spacing, can be used for radiation shaping.

Dark-state and loss-induced phenomena in the quantum-optical regime of $Λ$-type three-level systems

The interaction of matter with quantum light leads to phenomena which cannot be explained by semiclassical approaches. Of particular interest are states with broad photon number distributions which allow processes with high-order Fock states. Here, we analyze a Jaynes-Cummings-type model with three electronic levels which is excited by quantum light. As quantum light we consider coherent and squeezed states. In our simulations we include several loss mechanisms, namely, dephasing, cavity, and radiative losses which are relevant in real systems. We demonstrate that losses allow one to control the population of electronic levels and may induce coherent population trapping, as well as lead to a redistribution of the photon statistics among the quantum fields and even to a transfer of the photon statistics from one field to another. Moreover, we introduce and analyze a novel quantity, the quantum polarization, and demonstrate its fundamental difference compared to the classical polarization. Using the quantum polarization and the third level population, we investigate electromagnetically induced transparency in the presence of quantum light and show its special features for the case of squeezed light. Finally, quantum correlations between fields are studied and analyzed in the presence of different types of losses.

Generating two-mode squeezing with multimode measurement-induced nonlinearity

Measurement-induced nonclassical effects in a two-mode interferometer are investigated theoretically using numerical simulations and analytical results. We demonstrate that for certain parameters measurements within the interferometer lead to the occurrence of two-mode squeezing. The results strongly depend on the detection probability, the phase inside the interferometer, and the choice of the input states. The appropriate parameters for maximized squeezing are obtained. We analyze the influence of losses and confirm that the predicted effects are within reach of current experimental techniques.

Spatial entanglement and state engineering via four-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

The phenomenon of entanglement is the basis of quantum information and quantum communication processes. Entangled systems with a large number of photons are of great interest at present because they provide a platform for streaming technologies based on photonics. In this paper we present a device which operates with four-photons and based on the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference. The presented device allows to maximize the degree of spatial entanglement and generate the highly entangled four-dimensional Bell states. Furthermore, the use of the interferometer in different regimes leads to fast interference fringes in the coincidence probability with period of oscillations twice smaller than the pump wavelength. We have a good agreement between theoretical simulations and experimental results.

Properties of bright squeezed vacuum at increasing brightness

Bright squeezed vacuum (BSV) is a non-classical macroscopic state of light, which can be generated through high-gain parametric down-conversion or four-wave mixing. Although BSV is an important tool in quantum optics and has a lot of applications, its theoretical description is still not complete. In particular, the existing description in terms of Schmidt modes fails to explain the spectral broadening observed in experiment as the mean number of photons increases. On the other hand, the semi-classical description accounting for the broadening does not allow to decouple the intermodal photon-number correlations. In this work, we present a new generalized theoretical approach to describe the spatial properties of BSV. This approach is based on exchanging the $(\textbf{k},t)$ and $(ω,z)$ representations and solving a system of integro-differential equations. Our approach predicts correctly the dynamics of the Schmidt modes and the broadening of the spectrum with the increase in the BSV mean photon number due to a stronger pumping. Moreover, the model succesfully describes various properties of a widely used experimental configuration with two crystals and an air gap between them, namely an SU(1,1) interferometer. In particular, it predicts the narrowing of the intensity distribution, the reduction and shift of the side lobes, and the decline in the interference visibility as the mean photon number increases due to stronger pumping. The presented experimental results confirm the validity of the new approach. The model can be easily extended to the case of frequency spectrum, frequency Schmidt modes and other experimental configurations.

The multimode four-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

The two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference is a pure quantum effect which indicates the degree of indistinguishability of photons. The four-photon HOM interference exhibits richer dynamics in comparison to the two-photon interference and simultaneously is more sensitive to the input photon states. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally an explicit dependency of the four-photon interference to the number of temporal modes, created in the process of parametric down-conversion. Moreover, we exploit the splitting ratio of the beam splitter to manipulate the interference between bunching and antibunching. Our results reveal that the temporal mode structure (multimodeness) of the quantum states shapes many-particle interference.

Toolbox for the design of $LiNbO_3$-based passive and active integrated quantum circuits

We present and discuss perspectives of current developments on advanced quantum optical circuits monolithically integrated in the lithium niobate platform. A set of basic components comprising photon pair sources based on parametric down conversion (PDC), passive routing elements and active electro-optically controllable switches and polarisation converters are building blocks of a toolbox which is the basis for a broad range of diverse quantum circuits. We review the state-of-the-art of these components and provide models that properly describe their performance in quantum circuits. As an example for applications of these models we discuss design issues for a circuit providing on-chip two-photon interference. The circuit comprises a PDC section for photon pair generation followed by an actively controllable modified Mach-Zehnder structure for observing Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference. The performance of such a chip is simulated theoretically by taking even imperfections of the properties of the individual components into account.

Modified Two-Photon Interference Achieved by the Manipulation of Entanglement

In this theoretical study we demonstrate that entangled states are able to significantly extend the functionality of Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometers. By generating a coherent superposition of parametric-down-conversion photons and spatial entanglement in the input channel, the coincidence probability measured at the output changes from a typical HOM-type dip (photon bunching) into much richer patterns including an anti-bunching peak and rapid oscillation fringes with twice the optical frequency. The considered system should be realizable on a single chip using current waveguide technology in the $LiNbO_3$ platform.

Bright squeezed vacuum in a nonlinear interferometer: frequency/temporal Schmidt-mode description

Control over the spectral properties of the bright squeezed vacuum (BSV), a highly multimode non-classical macroscopic state of light that can be generated through high-gain parametric down conversion, is crucial for many applications. In particular, in several recent experiments BSV is generated in a strongly pumped SU(1,1) interferometer to achieve phase supersensitivity, perform broadband homodyne detection, or tailor the frequency spectrum of squeezed light. In this work, we present an analytical approach to the theoretical description of BSV in the frequency domain based on the Bloch-Messiah reduction and the Schmidt-mode formalism. As a special case we consider a strongly pumped SU(1,1) interferometer. We show that different moments of the radiation at its output depend on the phase, dispersion and the parametric gain in a nontrivial way, thereby providing additional insights on the capabilities of nonlinear interferometers. In particular, a dramatic change in the spectrum occurs as the parametric gain increases.

Projective filtering of a single spatial radiation eigenmode

Lossless filtering of a single coherent (Schmidt) mode from spatially multimode radiation is a problem crucial for optics in general and for quantum optics in particular. It becomes especially important in the case of nonclassical light that is fragile to optical losses. An example is bright squeezed vacuum generated via high-gain parametric down conversion or four-wave mixing. Its highly multiphoton and multimode structure offers a huge increase in the information capacity provided that each mode can be addressed separately. However, the nonclassical signature of bright squeezed vacuum, photon-number correlations, are highly susceptible to losses. Here we demonstrate lossless filtering of a single spatial Schmidt mode by projecting the spatial spectrum of bright squeezed vacuum on the eigenmode of a single-mode fiber. Moreover, we show that the first Schmidt mode can be captured by simply maximizing the fiber-coupled intensity. Importantly, the projection operation does not affect the targeted mode and leaves it usable for further applications.

Direct Schmidt number measurement of high-gain parametric down conversion

In this work we estimate the transverse Schmidt number for the bipartite bright squeezed vacuum state by means of second-order intensity correlation function measurement. Assuming that the number of modes is equal in both beams we determine the Schmidt number considering only one of the subsystems. The obtained results demonstrate that this approach is equally efficient over the whole propagation of the state from the near field to the far field regions of its emitter.
