Spectra of heavy-light and heavy-heavy mesons containing charm quarks, including higher spin states for $N_f=2+ 1$

We study the spectra of heavy-light and heavy-heavy mesons containing charm quarks, including higher spin states. We use two sets of $N_f = 2 + 1$ gauge configurations, one set from QCDSF using the SLiNC action, and the other configurations from the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration, using the HEX smeared clover action. To extract information about the excited states, we choose a suitable basis of operators to implement the variational method.

Finite temperature phase transition with two flavors of improved Wilson fermions

The critical temperature is computed for N_f = 2 dynamical flavors of nonperturbatively improved Wilson fermions. The new simulations are performed on lattices 40^3 x 14 with lattice spacing and pion mass about 0.08 fm and 200 MeV, respectively. We find the deconfinement and chiral phase transitions to coincide within numerical precision. Our results are in broad agreement with a second order phase transition in the chiral limit. The critical temperature at the physical quark mass is found to be T_c = 172(3)(6) MeV.

Accelerating the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm

An algorithm for separating the high- and low-frequency molecular dynamics modes in Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations of gauge theories with dynamical fermions is presented. The separation is based on splitting the pseudo-fermion action into two parts, as was initially proposed by Hasenbusch. We propose to introduce different evolution time-scales for each part. We test our proposal in realistic simulations of two-flavor O(a) improved Wilson fermions. A speed-up of more than a factor of three compared to the standard HMC algorithm is observed in a typical run.

Finite Size Effects in Nucleon Masses in Dynamical QCD

For lattice calculations with light dynamical quarks, finite size effects have become an important aspect. We study finite size effects in nucleon masses on N_f=2 dynamical lattices of 1-2 fm. Predictions for the finite size effects are obtained in one-loop chiral perturbation theory.

Progress towards a lattice determination of (moments of) nucleon structure functions

Using unimproved and non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions, results are given for the three lowest moments of unpolarised nucleon structure functions. Renormalisation, chiral extrapolation and the continuum limit of the matrix elements are briefly discussed. The simulations are performed for both quenched and two flavours of unquenched fermions. No obvious sign of deviation from linearity in the chiral extrapolations are found. (This is most clearly seen in our quenched unimproved data, which extends to lighter quark mass.) Possible quenching effects also seem to be small. The lowest moment thus remains too large, so it seems to be necessary to reach smaller quark masses in numerical simulations.

The Polarized Structure Function g_2: A Lattice Study Revisited

A recent lattice calculation of the spin-dependent structure function g_2 is revisited. It has been recognized that the twist-three operator, which gives rise to d_2, mixes non-perturbatively with operators of lower dimensions under renormalization. This changes the results substantially.

Higher-twist contributions to the Structure Functions coming from 4-fermion operators

We evaluate the contribution of a class of higher-twist operators to the lowest moment of the Structure Functions, by computing appropriate matrix elements of six four-fermion operators in the quenched approximation. Their perturbative renormalization constants and mixing coefficients are calculated in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme of dimensional regularization, using codes written in the algebraic manipulation computer language FORM.

Resolving Exceptional Configurations in Quenched Lattice QCD

Quenched lattice QCD calculations with Wilson-type fermions at small quark masses are impeded by exceptional configurations. We show how this problem can be resolved in a practicable way without changing the physics in the chiral limit.

$O(a)$ Improvement for Quenched Wilson Fermions

We briefly describe some of our recent results for the mass spectrum and matrix elements using $O(a)$ improved fermions for quenched QCD. Where possible a comparison is made between improved and Wilson fermions.

Resolution of the Landau pole problem in QED

We present new numerical results for the renormalized mass and coupling in non-compact lattice QED with staggered fermions. Implications for the continuum limit and the role of the Landau pole are discussed.

Is there a Landau Pole Problem in QED?

We investigate a lattice version of QED by numerical simulations. For the renormalized charge and mass we find results which are consistent with the renormalized charge vanishing in the continuum limit. A detailed study of the relation between bare and renormalized quantities reveals that the Landau pole lies in a region of parameter space which is made inaccessible by spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.

Perturbative Renormalization of Improved Lattice Operators

We derive bases of improved operators for all bilinear quark currents up to spin two (including the operators measuring the first moment of DIS Structure Functions), and compute their one-loop renormalization constants for arbitrary coefficients of the improvement terms. We have thus control over O(a) corrections, and for a suitable choice of improvement coefficients we are only left with errors of O(a^2).

Local bilinear operators on the lattice and their perturbative renormalisation including O(a) effects

Some basic concepts are discussed to derive renormalisation factors of local lattice operators relevant to deep inelastic structure functions and to other measurable quantities. These $Z$ factors can be used to relate matrix elements measured by lattice techniques to their continuum counterparts. We discuss the $O(a)$ improvement of point and one-link lattice quark operators. Suitable bases of improved operators are derived. Tadpole improvement is applied to get more reliable perturbative results.

Spin Structure Functions from Lattice QCD

We report on new results of the spin dependent structure functions $g_1$ and $h_1$ of the nucleon. An attempt is made to convert the moments, which is what one computes on the lattice, to quark distribution functions.

New results for non-perturbative order(a) improvement in light hadrons

We have results from light hadron simulations in quenched QCD at beta=6.0 and 6.2 using non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert fermions in an effort to remove all order(a) effects. From looking at hadron masses and splittings and the RG-invariant quark masses (where we have one point at beta=5.7) we suggest this is plausible even with the limited data set. The interpretation of the decay constants appears to be less clear.
