Composition and Structure Based GGA Bandgap Prediction Using Machine Learning Approach

This study focuses on developing precise machine learning (ML) regression models for predicting energy bandgap values based on chemical compositions and crystal structures. The primary aim is to match the accuracy of predictions derived from GGA-PBE calculations and validate them through density functional theory (DFT)-based band structure calculations. We assessed eight standalone ML regression models, including AdaBoost, Bagging, CatBoost, LGBM, RF, DT, GB, and XGB. These models were analyzed for their ability to predict GGA-PBE bandgap values across diverse material structures and compositions, using a dataset containing bandgap values for 106,113 compounds. Additionally, we constructed four ensemble models using the stacking method and seven using the bagging method. These ensemble models incorporated RidgeCV and LassoCV to explore if ensemble techniques could enhance prediction accuracy. The dataset was divided into subsets of varying sizes: 10,000, 25,000, 50,000, and 100,000 entries. We determined feature importance through permutation techniques and established a correlation coefficient matrix using the Pearson correlation method. The Random Forest (RF) model emerged as the top performer among standalone models, achieving an R2 value of 0.943 and an RMSE value of 0.504 eV. Bagging regression demonstrated improved performance across different dataset sizes with streamlined feature selection. Ensemble models, particularly bagging, consistently outperformed standalone models, achieving the best R2 value of 0.948 and an RMSE value of 0.479 eV in the test dataset. Using the best-performing model, we predicted bandgap values for new half-Heusler compounds with 18 valence electron counts. These predictions were successfully validated using accurate DFT calculations. DFT calculations indicated that the newly predicted compounds are narrow bandgap semiconductors with dynamic stability.

Accelerating Discovery of Vacancy Ordered 18-Valence Electron Half-Heusler Compounds: A Synergistic Approach of Machine Learning and Density Functional Theory

In this study, we attempted to model vacancy ordered half Heusler compounds with 18 valence electron count (VHH) derived from 19 VEC compounds such as TiNiSb such that the compositions will be Ti0.75NiSb, Zr0.75NiSb and Hf0.75NiSb with semiconducting behavior. The main motivation is that such a vacancy-ordered phase not only introduces semi conductivity but also it disrupts the phonon conducting path in HH alloys and thus reduces the thermal conductivity and as a consequence enhances the thermoelectric figure of merit. In order to predict the formation energy ({\Delta}Hf) from composition and crystal structure we have used 4684 compounds for their {\Delta}Hf values are available in the material project database and trained a machine learning model with R2 value of 0.943. Using this trained model, we have predicted the {\Delta}Hf of a list of VHH. From the predicted database of VHH we have selected Zr0.75NiSb and Hf0.75NiSb to validate the machine learning prediction using accurate DFT calculation. The calculated {\Delta}Hf for these two compounds from DFT calculation are found to be comparable with our ML prediction. The calculated electronic and lattice dynamics properties show that these materials are narrow band gap semiconductors and are dynamically stable as their all-phonon dispersion curves are having positive frequencies. The calculated Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity as well as thermal conductivity, power factor and thermoelectric figure of merit are analyzed.

Suppressing initial capacity fade in Li-rich Li$_5$FeO$_4$ with anionic redox by partial Co substitution

The increasing relevance of energy storage technologies demands high-capacity cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. Recently, Li-rich defect anti-fluorite Li$_5$FeO$_4$ has emerged as a high-capacity cathode material exhibiting simultaneous anionic and cationic redox without significant oxygen release. But suffers from irreversible structural change and capacity fade during cycling. Herein we investigate the suppressed capacity fade reported in Co substituted Li$_5$FeO$_4$ and establish the optimal performance through tuning the concentration and oxidation state of Co. We have substituted Co at the Fe site and carried out a detailed analysis of structural, magnetic, electronic, and electrochemical properties using first-principles density functional theory calculations. The extended stability and suppressed capacity fading are found only in specific compositions depending on the Co/Li concentration and the oxidation state of Co. The reasons behind suppressed capacity fading in Co substituted systems have been unveiled on the basis of bonding analyses and proposed as a strategy to suppress the voltage fading reported in Li-rich materials due to transition metal migration. From the evaluation of thermodynamic stability and electronic structure, Li$_{5.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$O$_4$, Li$_5$Fe$_{0.25}$Co$_{0.75}$O$_4$, and Li$_{4.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$O$_4$ are found to exhibit better electrical conductivity than Li$_5$FeO$_4$. All these systems have voltage in the range of 3 to 5 V and exhibit three dimensional Li diffusion pathway with a diffusion barrier height of around 0.3 eV. From Li$_5$Fe$_{0.25}$Co$_{0.75}$O$_4$, one can delithiate three Li-ions without structural change and oxygen release, therefore expected to acquire a reversible capacity of around 513 mAh/g. Moreover, as in pristine Li$_5$FeO$_4$, the selected Co substituted systems also exhibit simultaneous anionic and cationic redox without significant O2 release.

First principle studies on electronic and thermoelectric properties of Fe$_{2}$TiSn based multinary Heusler alloys

The alloys with 8/18/24 valence electron count (VEC) are promising candidates for efficient energy conversion and refrigeration applications at low as well as high temperatures. The full potential linearized augmented plane wave method as implemented in WIEN2k code was used to investigate electronic structure and TE transport properties with the PBE$-$GGA and TB$-$mBJ exchange potentials and Boltzmann transport theory. The calculated single crystal elastic constants, phonon dispersion and phonon density of states confirm that these systems are mechanically and dynamically stable. The TE transport properties is calculated by including the lattice part of thermal conductivity ($κ_{L}$) obtained from two methods one from the calculated elastic properties calculation ($κ^{elastic}_{L}$) and the other from phonon dispersion curve ($κ^{phonon}_{L}$). The strong phonon$-$phonon scattering by large mass difference/strain fluctuation of isovalent/aliovalent substitution at Ti/Sn sites of Fe$_{2}$TiSn reduces the lattice thermal conductivity which results in high \textit{ZT} value of 0.81 at 900\,K for Fe$_{2}$Sc$_{0.25}$Ti$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.25}$Al$_{0.5}$Bi$_{0.5}$. The comparative analysis of TE transport properties using the band structures calculated with the PBE$-$GGA and TB$-$mBJ functional shows that the \textit{ZT} value obtained from TB$-$mBJ scheme is found to be significantly higher than that based on PBE$-$GGA. The calculated relatively low lattice thermal conductivity and high \textit{ZT} values suggest that isovalent/aliovalent substituted Fe$_{2}$TiSn are promising candidates for medium to high temperature waste heat recovery.

First principle design of new thermoelectrics from TiNiSn based pentanary alloys based on 18 valence electron rule

In this study, we have reported electronic structure, lattice dynamics, and thermoelectric (TE) transport properties of a new family of pentanary substituted TiNiSn systems using the 18 valence electron count (VEC) rule. From our calculated band structures and density of states, we show that by preserving the 18 VEC through aliovalent substitutions at the Ti site of TiNiSn semiconducting behavior can be achieved, and hence one can tune the band structure and band gap to maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) value. Two approaches have been used for calculating the lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_{L}$), one by fully solving the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport (LBTE) equation from first$-$principles anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations implemented in Phono3py code and other using Slack's equation with calculated Debye temperature and Grüneisen parameter using the calculated elastic constant values. The calculated $κ_{L}$ values decrease from parent TiNiSn to pentanary substituted TiNiSn systems as expected due to fluctuation in atomic mass. The calculated $κ_{L}$ for Hf containing systems La$_{0.25}$Hf$_{0.5}$V$_{0.25}$NiSn and non Hf containing system La$_{0.25}$Zr$_{0.5}$V$_{0.25}$NiSn calculated from Phono3py (Slack's equation) are found to be 0.37 (1.04) and 0.16 (0.95) W/mK, at 550\,K, respectively and the corresponding ZT value are found to be 0.54 (0.4) and 0.77 (0.53). Among the considered systems, the calculated phonon spectra and heat capacity show that La$_{0.25}$Hf$_{0.5}$V$_{0.25}$NiSn has more optical$-$acoustic band mixing which creates more phonon$-$phonon scattering and hence lower the $κ_{L}$ value and maximizing the ZT. Based on the calculated results we conclude that one can design high-efficiency thermoelectric materials by considering the 18 VEC rule with aliovalent substitution.

Metamagnetism stabilized giant magnetoelectric coupling in ferroelectric \textit{x}BaTiO${_3}$-(1-\textit{x})BiCoO${_3}$ solid solution

In order to establish the correlation between the magnetoelectric coupling and magnetic instability, we have studied the structural, magnetic, and ferroelectric properties of \textit{x}BaTiO${_3}$-(1-\textit{x})BiCoO${_3}$ as a function of BaTiO$_3$ concentration ($x$) and volume. The $G-$type antiferromagnetic ordering is found to be energetically favorable for $x<$ 0.45 and higher concentrations stabilize with nonmagnetic states. We observe metamagnetic spin state transitions associated with paraelectric to ferrolectric transitions as a function of volume and $x$ using synchrotron diffraction and computational studies, indicating a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Specifically for $x=$ 0.33 composition, a pressure induced high spin (HS) to low spin (LS) transition occurs when the volume is compressed below 5\%. Our orbital$-$projected density of states show a HS state for Co$^{3+}$ in the ferroelectric ground state for $x<$ 0.45 and the corresponding paraelectric phase is stable in the nonmagnetic state due to the stabilization of LS state as evident from our fixed$-$spin$-$moment calculations and magnetic measurements. High values of spontaneous ferroelectric polarizations are predicted for lower $x$ values which inversely vary with $x$ because of the reduction of tetragonality ($c/a$) with increase in $x$. Moreover, we find that the HS$-$LS transition point and magnetoelectric coupling strength can be varied by $x$.

Theoretical Investigation on the Effect of multinary Isoelectronic Substitution on TiCoSb based half-Heusler alloys

To understand the effect of isoelectronic substitution on thermoelectric properties of TiCoSb based half - Heusler (HH) alloys, we have systematically studied the transport properties with substitution of Zr at Ti and Bi at Sb sites. The electronic structure of TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) and parent TiCoSb are investigated using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method and the thermoelectric transport properties are calculated on the basis of semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The band analysis of the calculated band structures reveal that TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x has semiconducting behavior with indirect band gap at x = 0.25, 0.5 concentration and direct band gap behavior at x = 0.75 concentration. The TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) compounds show smaller band gap values as compared to the pure TiCoSb. The d electrons of Ti/Zr and Co dominate the electronic transport properties of TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x system. All these systems follow the empirical rule of 18 valence-electron content to bring semiconductivity in HH alloys. The isoelectronic substitution in TiCoSb can tune the band structure by shifting the Fermi level. This provides us lot of possibilities to get the desired band gap values for designing thermoelectrics with high efficiency. In this study we have showed that the isoelectronic substitution at both Ti and Sb site of TiCoSb has very small effect for increasing the ZT values and one should go for isoelectronic substitution at any one sites of TiCoSb HH alloys alone to improve ZT.

A First Principle Study on Iron Substituted LiNi(BO3) to use as Cathode Material for Li-ion Batteries

In this work, the structural stability and the electronic properties of LiNiBO 3 and LiFe x Ni (1-x) BO 3 are studied using first principle calculations based on density functional theory. The calculated structural parameters are in good agreement with the available theoretical data. The most stable phases of the Fe substituted systems are predicted from the formation energy hull generated using the cluster expansion method. The 66% of Fe substitution at the Ni site gives the most stable structure among all the Fe substituted systems. The bonding mechanisms of the considered systems are discussed based on the density of states (DOS) and charge density plot. The detailed analysis of the stability, electronic structure, and the bonding mechanisms suggests that the systems can be a promising cathode material for Li ion battery applications.

Phosphorene-AsP Heterostructure as a Potential Excitonic Solar Cell Material - A First Principles Study

Solar energy conversion to produce electricity using photovoltaics is an emerging area in alternative energy research. Herein, we report on the basis of density functional calculations, phosphorene/AsP heterostructure could be a promising material for excitonic solar cells (XSCs). Our HSE06 functional calculations show that the band gap of both phosphorene and AsP fall exactly into the optimum value range according to XSCs requirement. The calculated effective mass of electrons and holes show anisotropic in nature with effective masses along $Γ$-X direction is lower than the $Γ$-Y direction and hence the charge transport will be faster along $Γ$-X direction. The wide energy range of light absorption confirms the potential use of these materials for solar cell applications. Interestingly, phosphorene and AsP monolayer forms a type-II band alignment which will enhance the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and hence the recombination rate will be lower which can further improve its photo-conversion efficiency if one use it in XSCs.

Magnetoelectric Properties of Pb Free Bi2FeTiO6: A Theoretical Investigation

The structural, electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb free double perovskite multiferroic Bi2FeTiO6 are investigated using density functional theory within the general gradient approximation (GGA) method. Our structural optimization using total energy calculations for different potential structures show a minimum energy for a non-centrosymmetric rhombohedral structure with R3 space group. Bi2FeTiO6 is found to be an antiferromagnetic insulator with C-type magnetic ordering with bandgap value of 0.3 eV. The calculated magnetic moment of 3.52 μ_B at Fe site shows the high spin arrangement of 3d electrons which is also confirmed by our orbital projected density of states analysis. We have analyzed the characteristics of bonding present between the constituents of Bi2FeTiO6 with the help of calculated partial density of states and Born effective charges. The ground state of the nearest centrosymmetric structure is found to be a G-type antiferromagnet with half metallicity showing that by the application of external electric field we can not only get a polarized state but also change the magnetic ordering and electronic structure in the present compound indicating strong magnetoelectric coupling. The cation sites the coexistence of Bi 6s lone pair (bring disproportionate charge distribution) and Ti4+ d0 ions which brings covalency produces off-center displacement and favors a non-centrosymmetric ground state and thus ferroelectricity. Our Berry phase calculation gives a polarization of 48 \muCcm-2 for Bi2FeTiO6.

Effect of multinary substitution on electronic and transport properties of TiCoSb based half-Heusler alloys

The electronic structures of TixZrx/2CoPbxTex, TixZrx/2Hfx/2CoPbxTex (x = 0.5), and the parent compound TiCoSb were investigated using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The thermoelectric transport properties of these alloys are calculated on the basis of semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. From the band structure calculations we show that the substitution of Zr,Hf in the Ti site and Pb and Te in the Sb site lower the band gap value and also change the indirect band (IB) gap of TiCoSb to the direct band (DB) gap. The calculated band gap of TiCoSb, TixZrx/2CoPbxTex, and TixZrx/2Hfx/2CoPbxTex are 1.04 eV (IB), 0.92 eV (DB), and 0.93 eV (DB), respectively. All these alloys follow the empirical rule of 18 valence-electron content which is essential for bringing semiconductivity in half Heusler alloys. It is shown that the substitution of Hf at the Ti site improve the ZT value (~1.05) at room temperature, whereas there is no significant difference in ZT is found at higher temperature. Based on the calculated thermoelectric transport properties, we conclude that the appropriate concentration of Hf substitution can further improve the thermoelectric performance of TixZrx/2Hfx/2CoPbxTex.

Theoretical Investigation of the Magnetoelectric Properties of Bi2NiTiO6

We report the first principle investigations on the structural, electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of a Pb free double perovskite multiferroic Bi2NiTiO6 using density functional theory within the general gradient approximation (GGA) and GGA+U method. Our results show that Bi2NiTiO6 will be an insulator with G-type magnetic ordering in its ground state with Ni2+ in a high spin state and a spin moment of 1.74μ_B. The paraelectric phase stabilizes in nonmagnetic state with Ni2+ in low spin configuration showing that spin state transition plays an important role in strong magnetoelectric coupling in Bi2NiTiO6. The bonding characteristics of the constituents are analyzed with the help of partial density of states and Born effective charges. The presence of Ti ions at Ni sites suppresses the disproportionation observed in case of BiNiO3 and results in a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. The coexistence of Bi 6s lone pair and Ti4+ d0 ions which brings covalency produces a polarization of 32 \muCcm-2.

Prediction of Magnetoelectric behavior in Bi2MnTiO6

We present results from ab initio calculations based on density functional theory for bismuth-based double perovskite Bi2MnTiO6. Using total energy calculation with stress and force minimization we have predicted the equilibrium crystal structure for Bi2MnTiO6 considering potential structures into the calculation. We have predicted that the ground state of Bi2MnTiO6 will be a noncentrosymmetric rhombohedral structure with space group R3c. Our spin polarized calculation for different possible collinear magnetic configurations we found that Bi2MnTiO6 will be an insulator with G-type antiferromagnetic ordering in its ground state. The coexistence of both stereochemically active Bi-6s lone pair and the Ti4+ with d0-ness which bring covalency results in the stabilization of noncentrosymmetric structure and thus ferroelectricity. Our orbital projected density of states plot shows that the Mn2+ in Bi2MnTiO6 will be at high spin state with a spin moment of 4.28 μB. Hence Bi2MnTiO6 is predicted to be a magnetoelectric material.

Te Doped Indium (II) Selenide Photocatalyst for Water Splitting: A First Principles Study

Graphene like 2D materials have attracted tremendous attention in the field of photocatalytic water splitting. Indium Selenide (InSe) is one such potential material. Here, we report the effect of Tellurium on InSe monolayer for the photocatalytic water splitting by means of density functional calculations. The calculated bandgaps fall within the visible region of the solar spectrum indicating these materials could absorb a significant amount of solar light. Density of states calculations show that the covalent character is present between the atoms which is typical for the layered system. The band alignment with respect to redox potentials show that Te doped InSe is more favorable for the hydrogen reduction reaction than the pristine InSe monolayer. Our overall results show that Te substitution improves the photocatalytic water splitting ability in InSe monolayer.

Structural Phase Stability in Fluorinated Calcium Hydride

In order to improve the hydrogen storage properties of calcium hydride (CaH2), we have tuned its thermodynamical properties through fluorination. Using ab-initio total energy calculations based on density functional theory, the structural stability, electronic structure and chemical bonding of CaH2-xFx systems are investigated. The phase transition of fluorinated systems from orthorhombic to cubic structure has been observed at 18% fluorine doped CaH2. The phase stability analysis shows that CaH2-xFx systems are highly stable and the stability is directly correlating with their ionicity. Density of states (DOS) plot reveals that CaH2-xFx systems are insulators. Partial DOS and charge density analyses conclude that these systems are governed by ionic bonding. Our results show that H closer to F can be removed more easily than that far away from F and this is due to disproportionation induced in the bonding interaction by fluorination.

Electronic and magnetic structures of hole doped trilayer La(4-x)Sr(x)Ni3O8 from first principles calculations

The magnetic and electronic properties of trilayer La4Ni3O8, similar to hole doped cuprates, are investigated by performing full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method-based spin-polarized calculations with LDA and GGA functionals including Hubbard U parameters to account for strong correlation effects. Based on these calculations, we found that La4Ni3O8 is a C-type antiferromagnetic (C-AFM) Mott insulator in agreement with previous experimental and theoretical observations. Our calculations suggest that Ni1+ and Ni2+ ions are found to be in high spin state with an average valency of +1.33. Intermediate band gap states are originated from dz2 electrons of both types of Ni ions after including the strong correlation effects. In order to understand the role of hole doping on electronic structure, phase stability, and magnetic properties of La4Ni3O8, similar calculations have been performed for La(4-x)Sr(x)Ni3O8 as a function of x, using the supercell approach. We have found that the hole doping brings insulator-to-metal transition without changing the C-AFM ordering though the magnetic moment is enhanced at both Ni sites. Moreover, these Ni atoms are always in an average valence state irrespective of hole doping or volume change. So the electronic properties of hole doped La4Ni3O8 can not be compared with hole doped cuprates which are high Tc.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation on Structural, Electronic and Magnetic Properties of layered Mn5O8

We have investigated the crystal, electronic, and magnetic structure of Mn5O8 by means of state of-the-art density functional theory calculations and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements. This compound stabilizes in the monoclinic structure with space group C2/m where the Mn ions are in the distorted octahedral and trigonal prismatic coordination with oxygen atoms. The calculated structural parameters based on total energy calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with low temperature NPD measurements when we accounted correct magnetic structure and Coulomb correlation effect into the computation. Bond strength analysis based on crystal orbital Hamiltonian population between constituents indicating strong anisotropy in the bonding behavior which results in layered nature of its crystal structure. Using fully relativistic generalized-gradient approximation with Hubbard U (GGA+U) we found that the magnetic ordering in Mn5O8 is A-type antiferromagnetic and the direction of easy axis is [1 0 0] in agreement with susceptibility and NPD measurements. However, the calculation without the inclusion of HubbardU leads to ferrimagnetic half metal as ground state contradictory to experimental findings, indicating the presence of strong Coulomb correlation effect in this material. The GGA calculations without Coulomb correction effect itself is sufficient to reproduce our experimentally observed magnetic moments in various Mn sites.

Understanding H-defect complexes in ZnO

From state-of-the-art density-functional calculations using hybrid functionals we show that, persistent $n$-type conductivity in ZnO is due to defect complexes formed between H with intrinsic and extrinsic defects. H exhibits cationic, anionic, and electrically-inactive character on interacting with defects in ZnO. The electrically-inactive molecular hydrogen can contribute to $n$-type conductivity in ZnO by activating deep donor levels into shallow levels. By calculating local vibrational mode frequencies, we have identified origins of many H-related Raman and infra-red frequencies and thus confirmed the amphoteric behavior of H.
