Nernst Sign-Reversal in the Hexatic Vortex Phase of Weakly Disordered a-MoGe Thin Films

The hexatic phase is an intermediate stage in the melting process of a 2D crystal due to topological defects. Recently, this exotic phase was experimentally identified in the vortex lattice of 2D weakly disordered superconducting MoGe by scanning tunneling microscopic measurements. Here we study this vortex state by the Nernst effect, which is an effective and sensitive tool to detect vortex motion, especially in the superconducting fluctuation regime. We find a surprising Nernst sign reversal at the melting transition of the hexatic phase. We propose that they are a consequence of vortex dislocations in the hexatic state which diffuse preferably from the cold to hot.

Universal scaling of the order-parameter distribution in strongly disordered superconductors

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the statistical properties of the inhomogeneous order-parameter distribution (OPD) at the verge of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). We find within two prototype fermionic and bosonic models for disordered superconductors that one can identify a universal rescaling of the OPD. By performing scanning-tunneling microscopy experiments in three samples of NbN with increasing disorder we show that such a rescaling describes also with an excellent accuracy the experimental data. These results can provide a breakthrough in our understanding of the SIT.

Multi-vortex versus interstitial vortices scenario in superconducting antidot arrays

In superconducting thin films, engineered lattice of antidots (holes) act as an array of columnar pinning sites for the vortices and thus lead to vortex matching phenomena at commensurate fields guided by the lattice spacing. The strength and nature of vortex pinning is determined by the geometrical characteristics of the antidot lattice (such as the lattice spacing $a_0$, antidot diameter $d$, lattice symmetry, orientation, etc) along with the characteristic length scales of the superconducting thin films, viz., the coherence length ($\xi$) and the penetration depth ($\lambda$). There are at least two competing scenarios: (i) multiple vortices sit on each of the antidots at a higher matching period, and, (ii) there is nucleation of vortices at the interstitial sites at higher matching periods. Furthermore it is also possible for the nucleated interstitial vortices to reorder under suitable conditions. We present our experimental results on NbN antidot arrays in the light of the above scenarios.

Study of CeNi4Mn by neutron diffraction

We report neutron diffraction measurements on CeNi4Mn, which has recently been identified as a soft ferromagnet (Tc ~ 140 K) with a sizeable spin-transport polarization. Our data show conclusively that the Mn atoms occupy a unique site (4c) in the unit cell, which has the symmetry of the cubic MgCu4Sn-type structure. We infer a moment of 4.6 mu_B on Mn at 17 K, which is oriented ferromagnetically along the {101} plane. The amplitude of the Mn vibrational motion is found to be larger than that of Ce and Ni atoms at all temperatures, thereby lending support to theoretical prediction of rattling phonon modes in this compound.

High spin polarization in the ferromagnetic filled skutterudites KFe4Sb12 and NaFe4Sb12

The spin polarization of ferromagnetic alkali-metal iron antimonides KFe4Sb12 and NaFe4Sb12 is studied by point-contact Andreev reflection using superconducting Nb and Pb tips. From these measurements an intrinsic transport spin polarization Pt of 67% and 60% for the K and Na compound, respectively, is inferred which establishes these materials as a new class of highly spin polarized ferromagnets. The results are in accord with band structure calculations within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) that predict nearly 100% spin polarization in the density of states. We discuss the impact of calculated Fermi velocities and spin fluctuations on Pt.

Anomalous bias dependence of tunnel magnetoresistance in a magnetic tunnel junction

We have fabricated a spin-polarized tunneling device based on half metallic manganites incorporating $Ba_{2}LaNbO_{6}$ as insulating barrier. An anomalous bias dependence of tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) has been observed, the first of its kind in a symmetric electrode tunnel junction with single insulating barrier. The bias dependence of TMR shows an extremely sharp zero bias anomaly, which can be considered as a demonstration of the drastic density of states variation around the Fermi level of the half metal. This serves as a strong evidence for the existence of minority spin tunneling states at the half-metal insulator interface.

Evidence of gap anisotropy in superconducting YNi2B2C using directional point contact spectroscopy

We present a study of the anisotropy in the superconducting energy gap in a single crystal of YNi2B2C (Tc~14.6K) using directional point contact spectroscopy. The superconducting energy gap at 2.7K, when measured for I||c, is 4.5 times larger than that for I||a. The energy gaps in the two directions also have different temperature dependences. Our results support a scenario with s+g like symmetry.

The role of critical current on point contact Andreev Reflection spectrum between a normal metal and a superconductor

The point contact spectrum between a normal metal and a superconductor often shows unexpected sharp dips in the conductance at voltage values larger than the superconducting energy gap. These dips are not predicted in the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwizk (BTK) theory, commonly used to analyse these contacts. We present here a systematic study of these dips in a variety of contacts between different combinations of a superconductor and a normal metal. From the correlation between the characteristics of these dips with the contact area, we can surmise that such dips are caused by the contact not being in the ballistic limit. An analysis of the possible errors introduced while analysing such a spectrum with the standard BTK model is also presented.

Photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy study of electron-doped colossal magnetoresistance manganite: La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 film

The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent. A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d $\to$ 4f absorption edge, suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions in LCeMO. The measured Mn 3d PES/XAS spectra for LCeMO agrees reasonably well with the calculated Mn 3d PDOS using the LSDA+U method. The LSDA+U calculation predicts a half-metallic ground state for LCeMO.

Transport spin polarisation in SrRuO3 measured through Point Contact Andreev reflection

We report a study in which Andreev reflection using a Nb point contact is used to measure the transport spin polarisation of the 4d itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3. By performing the study in high quality thin films with residual resistivities less than 7micro-ohm-cm, we ensure that the study is done in the ballistic limit, a regime which is difficult to reach in oxide ferromagnets. The degree of transport spin polarisation that we find is comparable to that of the hole doped rare-earth manganites. We conclude that the large transport spin polarisation results mainly from a difference in the Fermi velocities between the majority and minority spin channels in this material.

Observation of minority spin character of the new electron doped manganite La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 from tunneling magnetoresistance

We report the magnetotransport characteristics of a trilayer ferromagnetic tunnel junction build of an electron doped manganite (La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3) and a hole doped manganite (La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3). At low temperatures the junction exhibits a large positive tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), irrespective of the bias voltage. At intermediate temperatures below T_C the sign of the TMR is dependent on the bias voltage across the junction. The magnetoresistive characteristics of the junction strongly suggest that La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 is a minority spin carrier ferromagnet with a high degree of spin polarization, i.e. a transport half metal.

Direct observation of electron doping in La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 using x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We report on a X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) study on a thin film of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3, a manganite which was previously only speculated to be an electron doped system. The measurements clearly show that the cerium is in the Ce(IV) valence state and that the manganese is present in a mixture of Mn2+ and Mn3+ valence states. These data unambiguously demonstrate that La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 is an electron doped colossal magnetoresistive manganite, a finding that may open up new opportunities both for device applications as well as for further basic research towards a better modelling of the colossal magnetoresistance phenomenon in these materials.

A 'p-n' diode with hole and electron-doped lanthanum manganite

The hole-doped manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and the electron-doped manganite La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 undergo an insulator to metal transition at around 250 K, above which both behave as a polaronic semiconductor. We have successfully fabricated an epitaxial trilayer (La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/SrTiO3/La0.7Ce0.3MnO3), where SrTiO3 is an insulator. At room temperature, i.e. in the semiconducting regime, it exhibits asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics akin to a p-n diode. The observed asymmetry in the I-V characteristics disappears at low temperatures where both the manganite layers are metallic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of such a p-n diode, using the polaronic semiconducting regime of doped manganites.

Peak effect in a superconducting DyBa2Cu3O7-y film at microwave frequencies

We report the observation of a peak in the microwave (9.55 GHz) surface resistance in an epitaxial DyBa2Cu3O7-y superconducting film in magnetic fields (parallel to the c axis) ranging between 0.2 to 0.9 Tesla. Such a peak is absent in the measurements done in zero-field. The temperature and field dependence of the peak suggests that this peak could be associated with the peak effect phenomenon reflecting the order-disorder transformation in the flux-line lattice. A strong dependence of this peak effect at frequencies close to the depinning frequency of the flux line lattice is observed.

Peak effect in laser ablated DyBa2Cu3O7-d films at microwave frequencies at subcritical currents

In this paper we report the observation of a peak in the microwave surface resistance (at frequencies ~10GHz) of laser ablated DyBa2Cu3O7-d films in magnetic field ranging from 2 to 9kOe (||c) close to the superconducting transition temperature (Tc(H)). The exact nature of peak is sample dependent but it follows a general behaviour. The peak shifts to lower temperature when the magnetic field is increased. It has strong frequency dependence and the peak is pronounced at frequencies close to the depinning frequency of the flux line lattice. From the observed temperature and field dependence we argue that this peak is associated with the order disorder transition of the flux line lattice close to Tc(H).

Critical current of a superconductor measured via injection of spin polarized carriers

In this paper we report a direct evidence of the suppression of critical current due to pair-breaking in a superconducting micro-bridge when the measurement is carried out by injecting spin polarised carriers instead of normal electrons. A thin layer of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 was used as the source of spin polarised carriers. The micro-bridge was formed on the DyBa2Cu3O7-d thin film by photo-lithographic techniques. The design of our spin-injection device allowed us to inject spin-polarised carriers from the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 layer directly to the DyBa2Cu3O7- d micro-bridge (without any insulating buffer layer) making it possible to measure the critical current when polarised electrons alone are injected into the superconductor. Our results confirm the role of polarised carriers in breaking the Cooper pairs in the superconductor.

Transport and Magnetic properties of laser ablated La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 films on LaAlO3: Effect of oxygen pressure, sample thickness and co-doping with Ca

La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 is a relatively new addition in the family of colossal magnetoresistive manganites where the cerium ion is believed to be in the Ce4+ state. In this paper we report an extensive study the magnetotransport properties of laser ablated La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 films on LaAlO3 with variation in ambient oxygen pressure during growth and film thickness. We observe that the transport and magnetic properties of the film depend on the interplay between oxygen pressure, surface morphology, film thickness and epitaxial strain. The films were characterized by x-ray diffraction on a 4-circle x-ray goniometer. We observe an increase in the metal-insulator transition temperature with decreasing oxygen pressure. This is in direct contrast with the oxygen pressure dependence of La0.7Ca-0.3MnO-3 films suggesting the electron doped nature of the La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 system. With decreasing film thickness we observe an increase in the metal-insulator transition temperature. This is associated with a compression of the unit cell in the a-b plane due to epitaxial strain. When the system is co-doped with 50% Ca at the Ce site the system (La0.7Ca0.15Ce0.15MnO3) is driven into a insulating state suggesting that the electrons generated by Ce4+ is compensated by the holes generated by Ca2+ valence thus making the average valence at the rare-earth site 3+ as in the parent material LaMnO3.

Critical behaviour in $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3$

We have studied the critical behaviour in $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3}$ near the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition temperature. We have analysed our dc magnetisation data near the transition temperature with the help of modified Arrott plots, Kouvel-Fisher method. We have determined the critical temperature $T_c$ and the critical exponents, $β$ and $γ$. With these values of $T_c$, $β$ and $γ$, we plot $M/(1-T/T_c)^β$ vs $H/(1-T/T_c)^γ$. All the data collapse on one of the two curves. This suggests that the data below and above $T_c$ obeys scaling, following a single equation of state.
