Observation of topological transition in high-T$_{c}$ superconductor FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$/SrTiO$_{3}$(001) monolayers

Superconductors with topological surface or edge states have been intensively explored for the prospect of realizing Majorana bound states, which obey non-Abelian statistics and are crucial for topological quantum computation. The traditional routes for making topological insulator/superconductor and semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures suffer fabrication difficulties and can only work at low temperature. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly observe the evolution of a topological transition of band structure nearby the Fermi level in two-dimensional high-T$_{c}$ superconductor FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$/SrTiO$_{3}$(001) monolayers, fully consistent with our theoretical calculations. Furthermore, evidence of edge states is revealed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy with assistance of theoretical calculations. Our study provides a simple and tunable platform for realizing and manipulating Majorana states at high temperature.

Van Hove singularities, chemical pressure and phonons: an angle-resolved photoemission study of KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CsFe$_2$As$_2$

We report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CsFe$_2$As$_2$, revealing the existence of a van Hove singularity affecting the electronic properties. As a result of chemical pressure, we find a stronger three-dimensionality in KFe$_2$As$_2$ than in CsFe$_2$As$_2$, notably for the 3$d_{z^2}$ states responsible for the small three-dimensional hole-like Fermi surface pocket reported by quantum oscillations. Supported by first-principles calculations, our ARPES study shows that the van Hove singularity previously reported in KFe$_2$As$_2$ moves closer to the Fermi level under negative chemical pressure. This observation, which suggests that the large density-of-states accompanying the van Hove singularity contributes to the large Sommerfeld coefficient reported for the AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) series, is also consistent with the evolution of the inelastic scattering revealed by transport under external pressure, thus offering a possible interpretation for the origin of the apparent change in the superconducting order parameter under pressure. We find that the coherent spectral weight decreases exponentially upon increasing temperature with a characteristic temperature $T^*$. We speculate how the low-energy location of the van Hove singularity and the presence of a low-energy peak in the phonon density-of-states can relate to the high-temperature crossover observed in various electronic and thermodynamic quantities.

Observation of a nodal chain with Dirac surface states in TiB2

Topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSMs) are characterized by symmetry-protected band crossings extending along one-dimensional lines in momentum space. The nodal lines exhibit a variety of possible configurations, such as nodal ring, nodal link, nodal chain, and nodal knot. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe nodal rings in the orthogonal kz = 0 and kx = 0 planes of the Brillouin zone in TiB2. The nodal rings connect with each other on the intersecting line {\Gamma}-K of the orthogonal planes, forming a remarkable nodal-chain structure. Furthermore, we observe surface states (SSs) on the (001) cleaved surface, which are consistent with the calculated SSs considering the contribution from both Ti and B terminations. The calculated SSs have novel Dirac-cone-like band structures, which are distinct from the usual drumhead SSs with a single flat band proposed in other TNLSMs.

Spatial-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of Weyl semimetal NbAs

We utilized X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the crystal surface of Weyl semimetal NbAs. XPEEM images present white and black contrast in both the Nb 3d and As 3d core level spectra. Surface-sensitive XPS spectra indicate that the entire surface of the sample contains both surface states of Nb 3d and As 3d, in form of oxides, and bulk states of NbAs. Estimated atomic percentage values nNb/nAs suggest that the surface is Nb-rich and asymmetric for white and black areas.

On the origin of critical nematic fluctuations in pnictide superconductors

We employ polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy to study critical nematic fluctuations in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Au$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ superconductors above and across well separated tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at temperature $T_S(x)$ and the N\'{e}el transition at $T_N(x)$. The static Raman susceptibility in $XY$ symmetry channel increases upon cooling from room temperature following the Curie-Weiss law, with Weiss temperature $T_{\theta}(x)$ several tens of degrees lower than $T_S(x)$. Data reveals a hidden nematic quantum critical point at $x_{c} = 0.031$ when the system becomes superconducting, indicating a direct connection between quantum critical nematic fluctuations and unconventional superconductivity. We attribute the origin of the nematicity to charge quadrupole fluctuations due to electron transfer between the nearly degenerate $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ orbitals.

Anomalous magneto-elastic coupling in Au-doped BaFe2As2

We used polarization-resolved Raman scattering to study magneto-elastic coupling in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Au$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ crystals as a function of light Au-doping, materials for which temperatures of the structural transition ($T_S$) and of the magnetic ordering transition ($T_N$) split. We study the appearance of the $A_g$(As)phonon intensity in the $XY$ scattering geometry that is very weak just below $T_S$, but for which the intensity is significantly enhanced below $T_N$. In addition, the $A_g$(As) phonon shows an asymmetric line shape below $T_N$ and an anomalous linewidth broadening upon Au-doping in the magnetic phase. We demonstrate that the anomalous behavior of the $A_g$(As) phonon mode in the $XY$ scattering geometry can be consistently described by a Fano model involving the $A_g$(As) phonon mode interacting with the $B_{2g}$ symmetry-like magnetic continuum in which the magneto-elastic coupling constant is proportional to the magnetic order parameter.

Magneto-elastic coupling in Fe-based superconductors

We used polarization-resolved Raman scattering to study the magneto-elastic coupling in the parent compounds of several families of Fe-based superconductors (BaFe2As2, EuFe2As2, NaFeAs, LiFeAs, FeSe and LaFeAsO). We observe an emergent Ag-symmetry As phonon mode in the XY scattering geometry whose intensity is significantly enhanced below the magneto-structural transition only for compounds showing magnetic ordering. We conclude that the small lattice anisotropy is insufficient to induce the in-plane electronic polarizability anisotropy necessary for the observed phonon intensity enhancement, and interpret this enhancement below the Neel temperature in terms of the anisotropy of the magnetic moment and magneto-elastic coupling. We evidence a Fano line- shape in the XY scattering geometry resulting from a strong coupling between the Ag (As) phonon mode and the B2g symmetry-like electronic continuum. Strong electron-phonon coupling may be relevant to superconductivity.

Observation of Open-Orbit Fermi Surface Topology in Extremely Large Magnetoresistance Semimetal MoAs$_2$

While recent advances in band theory and sample growth have expanded the series of extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) semimetals in transition metal dipnictides $TmPn_2$ ($Tm$ = Ta, Nb; $Pn$ = P, As, Sb), the experimental study on their electronic structure and the origin of XMR is still absent. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations and magnetotransport measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on MoAs$_2$, which is isostructural to the $TmPn_2$ family and also exhibits quadratic XMR. We resolve a clear band structure well agreeing with the predictions. Intriguingly, the unambiguously observed Fermi surfaces (FSs) are dominated by an open-orbit topology extending along both the [100] and [001] directions in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone. We further reveal the trivial topological nature of MoAs$_2$ by bulk parity analysis. Based on these results, we examine the proposed XMR mechanisms in other semimetals, and conclusively ascribe the origin of quadratic XMR in MoAs$_2$ to the carriers motion on the FSs with dominant open-orbit topology, innovating in the understanding of quadratic XMR in semimetals.

Three-component fermions with surface Fermi arcs in topological semimetal tungsten carbide

Topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals not only host quasiparticles analogous to the elementary fermionic particles in high-energy physics, but also have nontrivial band topology manifested by exotic Fermi arcs on the surface. Recent advances suggest new types of topological semimetals, in which spatial symmetries protect gapless electronic excitations without high-energy analogy. Here we observe triply-degenerate nodal points (TPs) near the Fermi level of WC, in which the low-energy quasiparticles are described as three-component fermions distinct from Dirac and Weyl fermions. We further observe the surface states whose constant energy contours are pairs of Fermi arcs connecting the surface projection of the TPs, proving the nontrivial topology of the newly identified semimetal state.

Raman study of electron-phonon coupling in thin films of LiTi$_2$O$_4$ spinel oxide superconductor

We performed a Raman scattering study of thin films of LiTi$_2$O$_4$ spinel oxide superconductor. We detected four out of five Raman active modes, with frequencies in good accordance with our first-principles calculations. Three T$_{2g}$ modes show a Fano lineshape from 5 K to 295 K, which suggests an electron-phonon coupling in LiTi$_2$O$_4$. Interestingly, the electron-phonon coupling shows an anomaly across the negative to positive magnetoresistance transition at 50 K, which may be due to the unset of other competing orders. The strength of the electron-phonon interaction estimated from the Allen's formula and the observed lineshape parameters suggests that the three T$_{2g}$ modes contribute little to superconductivity.

Robustness of topological states to lattice instability in non-symmorphic topological insulator KHgSb

We report a polarized Raman scattering study of non-symmorphic topological insulator KHgSb with hourglass-like electronic dispersion. Supported by theoretical calculations, we show that the lattice of the previously assigned space group $P6_3/mmc$ (No. 194) is unstable in KHgSb. While we observe one of two calculated Raman active E$_{2g}$ phonons of space group $P6_3/mmc$ at room temperature, an additional A$_{1g}$ peak appears at 99.5 ~cm$^{-1}$ upon cooling below $T^*$ = 150 K, which suggests a lattice distortion. Several weak peaks associated with two-phonon excitations emerge with this lattice instability. We also show that the sample is very sensitive to high temperature and high laser power, conditions under which it quickly decomposes, leading to the formation of Sb. Our first-principles calculations indicate that space group $P6_3mc$ (No. 186), corresponding to a vertical displacement of the Sb atoms with respect to the Hg atoms that breaks the inversion symmetry, is lower in energy than the presumed $P6_3/mmc$ structure and preserves the glide plane symmetry necessary to the formation of hourglass fermions.

Is BaCr$_2$As$_2$ symmetrical to BaFe$_2$As$_2$ with respect to half $3d$ shell filling?

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaCr$_2$As$_2$, which has the same crystal structure as BaFe$_2$As$_2$, a parent compound of Fe-based superconductors. We determine the Fermi surface of this material and its band dispersion over 5 eV of binding energy. Very moderate band renormalization (1.35) is observed for only two bands. We attribute this small renormalization to enhanced direct exchange as compared to Fe in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and to a larger contribution of the $e_g$ orbitals in the composition of the bands forming the Fermi surface, leading to an effective valence count that is reduced by Fe $d$ - As $p$ hybridization.

Evidence of topological insulator state in the semimetal LaBi

By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations, we performed a systematic investigation on the electronic structure of LaBi, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR), and is theoretically predicted to possess band anticrossing with nontrivial topological properties. Here, the observations of the Fermi-surface topology and band dispersions are similar to previous studies on LaSb [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 127204 (2016)], a topologically trivial XMR semimetal, except the existence of a band inversion along the $\Gamma$-$X$ direction, with one massless and one gapped Dirac-like surface state at the $X$ and $\Gamma$ points, respectively. The odd number of massless Dirac cones suggests that LaBi is analogous to the time-reversal $Z_2$ nontrivial topological insulator. These findings open up a new series for exploring novel topological states and investigating their evolution from the perspective of topological phase transition within the family of rare-earth monopnictides.

Experimental Observation of Three-Component 'New Fermions' in Topological Semimetal MoP

Condensed matter systems can host quasiparticle excitations that are analogues to elementary particles such as Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac fermions. Recent advances in band theory have expanded the classification of fermions in crystals, and revealed crystal symmetry-protected electron excitations that have no high-energy counterparts. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate the existence of a triply degenerate point in the electronic structure of MoP crystal, where the quasiparticle excitations are beyond the Majorana-Weyl-Dirac classification. Furthermore, we observe pairs of Weyl points in the bulk electronic structure coexisting with the 'new fermions', thus introducing a platform for studying the interplay between different types of fermions.

ARPES observation of Mn-pnictide hybridization and negligible band structure renormalization in BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which are isostructural to the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ of the 122 family of ferropnictide superconductors. We show the existence of a strongly $k_z$-dependent band gap with a minimum at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with their semiconducting properties. Despite the half-filling of the electronic 3$d$ shell, we show that the band structure in these materials is almost not renormalized from the Kohn-Sham bands of density functional theory. Our photon energy dependent study provides evidence for Mn-pnictide hybridization, which may play a role in tuning the electronic correlations in these compounds.

Superconductivity and electronic fluctuations in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ studied by Raman scattering

Using polarization-resolved electronic Raman scattering we study under-doped, optimally-doped and over-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ samples in the normal and superconducting states. We show that low-energy nematic fluctuations are universal for all studied doping range. In the superconducting state, we observe two distinct superconducting pair breaking peaks corresponding to one large and one small superconducting gaps. In addition, we detect a collective mode below the superconducting transition in the B$_{2g}$ channel and determine the evolution of its binding energy with doping. Possible scenarios are proposed to explain the origin of the in-gap collective mode. In the superconducting state of the under-doped regime, we detect a re-entrance transition below which the spectral background changes and the collective mode vanishes.

Collective excitations of dynamic Fermi surface deformations in BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.5}$P$_{0.5}$)$_2$

We use electronic Raman scattering to study the low-energy excitations in BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.5}$P$_{0.5}$)$_2$ ($T_c \approx 16$ K) samples. In addition to a superconducting pair breaking peak (2$\Delta=6.7$ meV) in the A$_{1g}$ channel with a linear tail towards zero energy, suggesting a nodal gap structure, we detect spectral features associated to Pomeranchuk oscillations in the A$_{1g}$, B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ channels. We argue that the small Fermi energy of the system is an essential condition for these Pomeranchuk oscillations to be underdamped. The Pomeranchuk oscillations have the same frequencies in the B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ channels, which we explain by the mixing of these symmetries resulting from the removal of the $\sigma_v$ and $\sigma_v$ symmetry planes due to a large As/P disorder. Interestingly, we show that the temperature at which the peaks corresponding to the Pomeranchuk oscillations get underdamped is consistent with the non-Fermi liquid to Femi liquid crossover determined by transport, suggesting that the Pomeranchuk instability plays an important role in the low-energy physics of the Fe-based superconductors.

Orbital-differentiated coherence-incoherence crossover identified by photoemission spectroscopy in LiFeAs

In the iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), orbital differentiation is an important phenomenon, whereby correlations stronger on the dxy orbital than on the dxz/yz orbital yield quasi-particles with dxy} orbital character having larger mass renormalization and abnormal temperature evolution. However, the physical origin of this orbital differentiation is debated between the Hund's coupling induced unbinding of spin and orbital degrees of freedom and the Hubbard interaction instigated orbital selective Mott transition. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to identify an orbital-dependent correlation-induced quasi-particle (QP) anomaly in LiFeAs. The excellent agreement between our photoemission measurements and first-principles many-body theory calculations shows that the orbital-differentiated QP lifetime anomalies in LiFeAs are controlled by the Hund's coupling.
