Phonon dynamics in Chromium under pressure: absence of phonon criticality at the approach of the quantum critical point

Fermi surface nesting is key to understanding the origin of the itinerant antiferromagnetic spin density wave in chromium. This magnetic order is accompanied by a charge-density wave, and both density waves disappear above the critical pressure $P_c \approx 10$ GPa at low temperatures, defining a quantum critical point. Whether this pressure-induced quantum phase transition is accompanied by a phonon instability remains an open question. Here, we use inelastic x-ray scattering to track the room-temperature acoustic phonon dispersions at pressures up to $P=15.6$ GPa, well above $P_c$. We focus on the Kohn anomalies near the $H$ and $N$ points of the Brillouin zone, with the $H$ point anomaly lying close to the incommensurate spin-density-wave ordering vector. The phonon branches harden smoothly under pressure, while the positions and wave-vector extents of both anomalies remain essentially unchanged across $P_c$, with no additional critical softening. \textit{Ab initio} calculations likewise show that Fermi surface nesting remains robust above $P_c$. These results indicate that the pressure-induced quantum phase transition is not driven by a phonon instability and support a primarily spin-density-wave-driven mechanism in presence of a robust Kohn anomaly.

Pressure-Driven Structural Transitions without a Displacive Charge-Density Wave in La$_2$SmNi$_2$O$_7$

We investigated the structural properties of bilayer nickelate La$_2$SmNi$_2$O$_7$ as a function of pressure and temperature. At ambient conditions, we show that the material crystallizes as a monoclinic superstructure distinct from the one previously reported and close to the pseudo-orthorhombic structure of pristine La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. No signatures of satellite reflections associated with charge density wave (CDW) ordering are detected at low temperature. Upon compression, a sequence of pressure-induced structural transitions from monoclinic to orthorhombic 15 GPa and then tetragonal 21 GPa symmetry is observed. Within the superconducting dome, the quality of the X-ray diffraction data enables structural refinements enabling theoretical models to understand the emergence of superconductivity.

Magnetic and structural properties of the iron silicide superconductor LaFeSiH

The magnetic and structural properties of the recently discovered pnictogen/chalcogen-free superconductor LaFeSiH ($T_c\simeq10$~K) have been investigated by $^{57}$Fe synchrotron M{ö}ssbauer source (SMS) spectroscopy, x-ray and neutron powder diffraction and $^{29}$Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). No sign of long range magnetic order or local moments has been detected in any of the measurements and LaFeSiH remains tetragonal down to 2 K. The activated temperature dependence of both the NMR Knight shift and the relaxation rate $1/T_1$ is analogous to that observed in strongly overdoped Fe-based superconductors. These results, together with the temperature-independent NMR linewidth, show that LaFeSiH is an homogeneous metal, far from any magnetic or nematic instability, and with similar Fermi surface properties as strongly overdoped iron pnictides. This raises the prospect of enhancing the $T_c$ of LaFeSiH by reducing its carrier concentration through appropriate chemical substitutions. Additional SMS spectroscopy measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 18.8~GPa found no measurable hyperfine field.

Magnetic structure of Cd-doped CeIrIn$_5$

We report the magnetic structure of nominally 10% Cd-doped CeIrIn$_5$, CeIr(In$_{0.9}$Cd$_{0.1}$)$_5$, determined by elastic neutron scattering. Magnetic intensity was observed only at the ordering wave vector $Q_{AF} = (1/2,1/2,1/2)$, commensurate with the crystal lattice. A staggered moment of 0.47(3)$μ_B$ at 1.8 K resides on the Ce ion. The magnetic moments are found to be aligned along the crystallographic $c$ axis. This is further confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data, which suggest the $c$ axis to be the easy magnetic axis. The determined magnetic structure is strikingly different from the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the closely related compound CeRhIn$_5$, in which the magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically aligned within the tetragonal basal plane.

Evidence of nodal superconductivity in LaFeSiH

Unconventional superconductivity has recently been discovered in the first iron-based superconducting silicide LaFeSiH. By using the complementary techniques of muon spin rotation, tunneling diode oscillator and density functional theory, we investigate the magnetic penetration depth and thereby the superconducting gap of this novel high-temperature superconductor. We find that the magnetic penetration depth displays a sub-$T^2$ behavior in the low-temperature regime below $T_c/3$, which evidences a nodal structure of the gap (or a gap with very deep minima). Even if the topology of the computed Fermi surface is compatible with the $s_\pm$-wave case with accidental nodes, its nesting and orbital-content features may eventually result in a $d$-wave state, more unusual for high-temperature superconductors of this class.

Penetration depth study of the type-I superconductor PdTe2

Superconductivity in the topological non-trivial Dirac semimetal PdTe$_2$ was recently shown to be type-I. We here report measurements of the relative magnetic penetration depth, $ Δλ$, on several single crystals using a high precision tunnel diode oscillator technique. The temperature variation $Δλ(T)$ follows an exponential function for $T/T_c < 0.4$, consistent with a fully-gapped superconducting state and weak or moderately coupling superconductivity. By fitting the data we extract a $λ(0)$-value of $\sim 500$~nm. The normalized superfluid density is in good agreement with the computed curve for a type-I superconductor with nonlocal electrodynamics. Small steps are observed in $Δλ(T)$, which possibly relates to a locally lower $T_c$ due to defects in the single crystalline sample. single crystalline sample.

Magnetic and thermodynamic properties of Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ single crystals

We present a detailed study of the phase diagram of copper intercalated TiSe$_2$ single crystals, combining local Hall-probe magnetometry, tunnel diode oscillator technique (TDO), specific-heat, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. A series of the Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ samples from three different sources with various copper content $x$ and superconducting critical temperatures $T_c$ have been investigated. We first show that the vortex penetration mechanism is dominated by geometrical barriers enabling a precise determination of the lower critical field, $H_{c1}$. We then show that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density deduced from magnetic measurements (both $H_{c1}$ and TDO techniques) clearly suggests the existence of a small energy gap in the system, with a coupling strength $2Δ_s \sim [2.4-2.8]k_BT_c$, regardless of the copper content, in puzzling contradiction with specific heat measurements which can be well described by one single large gap $2Δ_l \sim [3.7-3.9]k_BT_c$. Finally, our measurements reveal a non-trivial doping dependence of the condensation energy, which remains to be understood.

Determination of the magnetic structure of CePt$_2$In$_7$ by means of neutron diffraction

The magnetic structure of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CePt$_2$In$_7$ is determined using neutron diffraction. We find a magnetic wave vector $\mathbf{q}_M = (1/2,1/2,1/2)$, which is temperature independent up to $T_N =$ 5.5 K. A staggered moment of 0.45(1)$μ_B$ at 2 K resides on the Ce ion. The nearest-neighbor moments in the tetragonal basal plane are aligned antiferromagnetically. The moments rotate by 90$^\circ$ from one CeIn$_3$ plane to another along the $c$ axis. A much weaker satellite peak with an incommensurate magnetic wave vector $\mathbf{q}_M = (1/2,1/2,0.47)$ seems to develop at low temperature. However, the experimental data available so far are not sufficient to draw a definitive conclusion about the possible co-existence of commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures in this material.

Experimental consequences at high temperatures of quantum critical points

We study the Cr_(1-x) Re_x phase diagram finding that its phase transition temperature towards an antiferromagnetic order T_N follows a quantum [(x_c-x)/x_c ]^ψ law, with ψ=1/2, from the quantum critical point (QCP) at x_c=0.25 up to T_N=600K. We compare this system to others in order to understand why this elemental material is affected by the QCP up to such unusually high temperatures. We determine a general criterion for the crossover, as function of an external parameter such as concentration, from the region controlled solely by thermal fluctuations to that where quantum effects become observable. The properties of materials with low coherence lengths will thus be altered far away from the QCP.

Amplitude `Higgs' mode in 2H-NbSe2 Superconductor

We report experimental evidences for the observation of the superconducting amplitude mode, so-called `Higgs' mode in the charge density wave superconductor 2H-NbSe2 using Raman scattering. By comparing 2H-NbSe2 and its iso-structural partner 2H-NbS2 which shows superconductivity but lacks the charge density wave order, we demonstrate that the superconducting mode in 2H-NbSe2 owes its spectral weight to the presence of the coexisting charge density wave order. In addition, temperature dependent measurements in 2H-NbSe2 show a full spectral weight transfer from the charge density wave mode to the superconducting mode upon entering the superconducting phase. Both observations are fully consistent with a superconducting amplitude mode or Higgs mode.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of layers of superconducting 2H-TaSe$_\textbf{2}$: Evidence for a zero bias anomaly in single layers

We report a characterization of surfaces of the dichalcogenide TaSe$_2$ using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) at 150 mK. When the top layer has the 2H structure and the layer immediately below the 1T structure, we find a singular spatial dependence of the tunneling conductance below 1 K, changing from a zero bias peak on top of Se atoms to a gap in between Se atoms. The zero bias peak is additionally modulated by the commensurate $3a_0 \times 3a_0$ charge density wave of 2H-TaSe$_2$. Multilayers of 2H-TaSe$_2$ show a spatially homogeneous superconducting gap with a critical temperature also of 1 K. We discuss possible origins for the peculiar tunneling conductance in single layers.
