Energetic Particle Tracing in Optimized Quasisymmetric Stellarator Equilibria

Recent developments in the design of magnetic confinement fusion devices have allowed the construction of exceptionally optimized stellarator configurations. The near-axis expansion in particular has proven to enable the construction of magnetic configurations with good confinement properties while taking only a fraction of the usual computation time to generate optimized magnetic equilibria. However, not much is known about the overall features of fast-particle orbits computed in such analytical, yet simplified, equilibria when compared to those originating from accurate equilibrium solutions. This work aims to assess and demonstrate the potential of the near-axis expansion to provide accurate information on particle orbits and to compute loss fractions in moderate to high aspect ratios. The configurations used here are all scaled to fusion-relevant parameters and approximate quasisymmetry in various degrees. This allows us to understand how deviations from quasisymmetry affect particle orbits and what are their effects on the estimation of the loss fraction. Guiding-center trajectories of fusion-born alpha particles are traced using gyronimo and SIMPLE codes under the NEAT framework, showing good numerical agreement. Discrepancies between near-axis and MHD fields have minor effects on passing particles but significant effects on trapped particles, especially in quasihelically symmetric magnetic fields. Effective expressions were found for estimating orbit widths and passing-trapped separatrix in quasisymmetric near-axis fields. Loss fractions agree in the prompt losses regime but diverge afterward.

Dataset of an EEG-based BCI experiment in Virtual Reality and on a Personal Computer

We describe the experimental procedures for a dataset that we have made publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2605204 in mat (Mathworks, Natick, USA) and csv formats. This dataset contains electroencephalographic recordings on 21 subjects doing a visual P300 experiment on PC (personal computer) and VR (virtual reality). The visual P300 is an event-related potential elicited by a visual stimulation, peaking 240-600 ms after stimulus onset. The experiment was designed in order to compare the use of a P300-based brain-computer interface on a PC and with a virtual reality headset, concerning the physiological, subjective and performance aspects. The brain-computer interface is based on electroencephalography (EEG). EEG were recorded thanks to 16 electrodes. The virtual reality headset consisted of a passive head-mounted display, that is, a head-mounted display which does not include any electronics at the exception of a smartphone. This experiment was carried out at GIPSA-lab (University of Grenoble Alpes, CNRS, Grenoble-INP) in 2018, and promoted by the IHMTEK Company (Interaction Homme-Machine Technologie). The study was approved by the Ethical Committee of the University of Grenoble Alpes (Comit{\'e} d'Ethique pour la Recherche Non-Interventionnelle). Python code for manipulating the data is available at https://github.com/plcrodrigues/py.VR.EEG.2018-GIPSA. The ID of this dataset is VR.EEG.2018-GIPSA.

Dependence of alpha-particle-driven Alfv\'en eigenmode linear stability on device magnetic field strength and consequences for next-generation tokamaks

Recently-proposed tokamak concepts use magnetic fields up to 12 T, far higher than in conventional devices, to reduce size and cost. Theoretical and computational study of trends in plasma behavior with increasing field strength is critical to such proposed devices. This paper considers trends in Alfv\'en eigenmode (AE) stability. Energetic particles, including alphas from D-T fusion, can destabilize AEs, possibly causing loss of alpha heat and damage to the device. AEs are sensitive to device magnetic field via the field dependence of resonances, alpha particle beta, and alpha orbit width. We describe the origin and effect of these dependences analytically and by using recently-developed numerical techniques (Rodrigues et al. 2015 Nucl. Fusion 55 083003). The work suggests high-field machines where fusion-born alphas are sub-Alfv\'enic or nearly sub-Alfv\'enic may partially cut off AE resonances, reducing growth rates of AEs and the energy of alphas interacting with them. High-field burning plasma regimes have non-negligible alpha particle beta and AE drive, but faster slowing down time, provided by high electron density, and higher field strength reduces this drive relative to low-field machines with similar power densities. The toroidal mode number of the most unstable modes will tend to be higher in high magnetic field devices. The work suggests that high magnetic field devices have unique, and potentially advantageous, AE instability properties at both low and high densities.

Comprehensive evaluation of the linear stability of Alfv\'en eigenmodes driven by alpha particles in an ITER baseline scenario

The linear stability of Alfv\'en eigenmodes in the presence of fusion-born alpha particles is thoroughly assessed for two variants of an ITER baseline scenario, which differ significantly in their core and pedestal temperatures. A systematic approach is used that considers all possible eigenmodes for a given magnetic equilibrium and determines their growth rates due to alpha-particle drive and Landau damping on fuel ions, helium ashes and electrons. This extensive stability study is efficiently conducted through the use of a specialized workflow that profits from the performance of the hybrid MHD drift-kinetic code $\mbox{CASTOR-K}$ (Borba D. and Kerner W. 1999 J. Comput. Phys. ${\bf 153}$ 101; Nabais F. ${\it et\,al}$ 2015 Plasma Sci. Technol. ${\bf 17}$ 89), which can rapidly evaluate the linear growth rate of an eigenmode. It is found that the fastest growing instabilities in the aforementioned ITER scenario are core-localized, low-shear toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmodes. The largest growth-rates occur in the scenario variant with higher core temperatures, which has the highest alpha-particle density and density gradient, for eigenmodes with toroidal mode numbers $n\approx30$. Although these eigenmodes suffer significant radiative damping, which is also evaluated, their growth rates remain larger than those of the most unstable eigenmodes found in the variant of the ITER baseline scenario with lower core temperatures, which have $n\approx15$ and are not affected by radiative damping.

Testing CCQE and 2p2h models in the NEUT neutrino interaction generator with published datasets from the MiniBooNE and MINERvA experiments

The MiniBooNE large axial mass anomaly has prompted a great deal of theoretical work on sophisticated Charged Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) neutrino interaction models in recent years. As the dominant interaction mode at T2K energies, and the signal process in oscillation analyses, it is important for the T2K experiment to include realistic CCQE cross section uncertainties in T2K analyses. To this end, T2K's Neutrino Interaction Working Group has implemented a number of recent models in NEUT, T2K's primary neutrino interaction event generator. In this paper, we give an overview of the models implemented, and present fits to published muon neutrino and muon antineutrino CCQE cross section measurements from the MiniBooNE and MINERvA experiments. The results of the fits are used to select a default cross section model for future T2K analyses, and to constrain the cross section uncertainties of the model. We find a model consisting of a modified relativistic Fermi gas model and multinucleon interactions most consistently describes the available data.

Sensitivity of alpha-particle-driven Alfven eigenmodes to q-profile variation in ITER scenarios

A perturbative hybrid ideal-MHD/drift-kinetic approach to assess the stability of alpha-particle-driven Alfven eigenmodes in burning plasmas is used to show that certain foreseen ITER scenarios, namely the Ip = 15 MA baseline scenario with very low and broad core magnetic shear, are sensitive to small changes in the background magnetic equilibrium. Slight variations (of the order of 1%) of the safety-factor value on axis are seen to cause large changes in the growth rate, toroidal mode number, and radial location of the most unstable eigenmodes found. The observed sensitivity is shown to proceed from the very low magnetic shear values attained throughout the plasma core, raising issues about reliable predictions of alpha-particle transport in burning plasmas.

A systematic approach to the linear-stability assessment of Alfv\'en eigenmodes in the presence of fusion-born alpha particles for ITER-like equilibria

A systematic approach to assess the linear stability of Alfv\'en eigenmodes in the presence of fusion-born alpha particles is described. Because experimental results for ITER are not available yet, it is not known beforehand which Alfv\'en eigenmodes will interact more intensively with the alpha-particle population. Therefore, the number of modes that need to be considered in stability assessments becomes quite large and care must be exercised when choosing the numerical tools to work with, which must be fast and efficient. In the presented approach, all possible eigenmodes are first found after intensively scanning a suitable frequency range. Each solution found is then tested to find if its discretization over the radial grid in use is adequate. Finally, the interaction between the identified eigenmodes and the alpha-particle population is evaluated with the drift-kinetic code CASTOR-K, in order to assess their growth rates and hence their linear stability. The described approach enables one to single out the most unstable eigenmodes in a given scenario, which can then be handled with more specialized tools. This selection capability eases the task of evaluating alpha-particle interactions with Alfv\'en eigenmodes, either for ITER scenarios or for any other kind of scenario planning.
