Electroweak precision physics via angular distributions in hadronic $\tau$ decays

Hadronic tau decays provide a unique low-energy laboratory for the charged-current interaction between quarks and leptons. Their use as an electroweak precision sector is, however, limited by nonperturbative QCD dynamics in the resonance region, encoded in hadronic form factors. In this work we show that angular information in two-hadron tau decays can be used to construct observables in which these form factors cancel, leading to first-principles Standard Model predictions up to light-quark-mass and radiative corrections. We derive the fully differential distributions for arbitrary two-pseudoscalar final states, including tau polarization, and extend them to the Weak Effective Field Theory at linear order in new-physics couplings. We then illustrate our strategy with several benchmark observables, for both unpolarized and polarized taus, whose Standard Model predictions can be obtained without modelling the dominant hadronic form factors and which receive characteristic beyond-the-Standard-Model corrections, in particular from tensor currents. These results provide concrete targets for Belle II, polarized-tau proposals such as Chiral Belle, and future high-statistics facilities, including super-tau-charm factories and FCC-ee, to test the electroweak structure of hadronic tau decays.

Beyond Form Factors: Precise Angular Tests in Hadronic $\tau$ Decays

Semileptonic $\tau$ decays mainly proceed via interactions between charged lepton and quark currents. The hadronization of the quark current is intrinsically nonperturbative and generally cannot be addressed analytically. In these proceedings, we propose using symmetry arguments alone to construct clean angular observables, which, within the Standard Model and in the absence of long-distance electromagnetic corrections, remain form-factor independent. These predictions can be experimentally tested, and any observed deviation could signal either effects of physics beyond the Standard Model or provide a clean benchmark for long-distance electromagnetic corrections. We also perform a first estimate of the expected impact of new physics in an EFT framework.

Radially excited pion: electromagnetic form factor and the box contribution to the muon's $g-2$

We investigate the properties of the radially excited charged pion, with a specific focus on its electromagnetic form factor (EFF) and its box contribution to the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) component of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, $a_{\mu}$. Utilizing a coupled non-perturbative framework combining Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations, we first compute the mass and weak decay constant of the pion's first radial excitation. Initial results are provided for the Rainbow-Ladder (RL) approximation, followed by an extended beyond RL (BRL) analysis that incorporates meson cloud effects. Building on our previous work, this analysis demonstrates that an accurate description of the first radial excitation can be achieved without the need for a reparametrization of the interaction kernels. Having demonstrated the effectiveness of the truncation scheme, we proceed to calculate the corresponding EFF, from which we derive the contribution of the pion's first radial excitation to the HLbL component of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, producing $a_{\mu}^{\pi_1-\text{box}}(\text{RL}) = -(2.03 \pm 0.12) \times 10 ^{-13}$, $a_{\mu}^{\pi_1-\text{box}}(\text{BRL}) = -(2.02 \pm 0.10) \times 10 ^{-13}$. Our computation also sets the groundwork for calculating related pole contributions of excited pseudoscalar mesons to $a_{\mu}$.

Exclusive hadronic $\tau$ decays, within $\&$ beyond the Standard Model

Semileptonic exclusive tau decays in the Standard Model are reviewed. As it is well-known, they are a privileged arena to learn about low-energy hadronization. They also allow for a number of clean new physics tests, which have attracted much attention recently, probing scales as high as a few TeV. In light of forthcoming Belle-II data, perspectives on this area are bright.

One-loop determination of $\tau \to \pi (K) \nu_{\tau}[\gamma]$ branching ratios and new physics tests

We calculate the ratios $R_{\tau / P}\equiv \Gamma \left( \tau \to P \nu_{\tau}[\gamma] \right) / \Gamma \left(P\to \mu \nu_{\mu}[\gamma]\right)$ ($P=\pi,K$) at one loop following a large-$N_C$ expansion where Chiral Perturbation Theory is enlarged by including the lightest resonances and respecting the short-distance behavior dictated by QCD. We find $\delta R_{\tau/\pi}=(0.18\pm 0.57 )\%$ and $\delta R_{\tau/K}=(0.97\pm 0.58 )\%$, where the uncertainties are induced fundamentally by the counterterms. We test the lepton universality, obtaining $\left|g_\tau/g_\mu\right|_\pi=0.9964\pm 0.0038$ and $\left|g_\tau/g_\mu\right|_K=0.9857\pm 0.0078$, and analyze the CKM unitarity, getting results at $2.1\sigma$ and $1.5\sigma$ from unitarity via $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|$ and $|V_{us}|$, respectively. We also update the search for non-standard interactions in $\tau$ decays. As a by-product, we report the theoretical radiative corrections to the $\tau \to P \nu_{\tau}[\gamma]$ decay rates: $\delta_{\tau \pi} = -(0.24 \pm 0.56) \%$ and $\delta_{\tau K} = -(0.15 \pm 0.57) \%$.} \maketitle

Radiative corrections to $\tau \to \pi (K) \nu_\tau [\gamma]$: a reliable new physics test

The ratios $R_{\tau/P}\equiv \Gamma(\tau \to P \nu_\tau [\gamma]) / \Gamma(P \to\mu \nu_\mu[\gamma])$ ($P=\pi, K$) provide sensitive tests of lepton universality $\left|g_\tau/g_\mu\right|=1$ and are a useful tool for new physics searches. The radiative corrections to $R_{\tau/P}$ are computed following a large-$N_C$ expansion to deal with hadronic effects: Chiral Perturbation Theory is enlarged by including the lightest multiplets of spin-one heavy states such that the relevant Green functions are well-behaved at high energies. We find $\delta R_{\tau/\pi}=(0.18\pm 0.57 )\%$ and $\delta R_{\tau/K}=(0.97\pm 0.58 )\%$, which imply $\left|g_\tau/g_\mu\right|_\pi=0.9964\pm 0.0038$ and $\left|g_\tau/g_\mu\right|_K=0.9857\pm 0.0078$, compatible with and at $1.8\sigma$ of lepton universality, respectively. We test unitarity and bind non-standard effective interactions with the $\tau \to P \nu_\tau [\gamma]$ decays.

Lepton-pair production in di-pion $\tau$ lepton decays

We study the $\tau^- \to \nu_{\tau} \pi^{-}\pi^{0}\ell^{+}\ell^{-}$ ($\ell=e,\,\mu$) decays, which are $O(\alpha^2)$-suppressed with respect to the dominant di-pion tau decay channel. Both the inner-bremsstrahlung and the structure- (and model-)dependent contributions are considered. In the $\ell=e$ case, structure-dependent effects are $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ in the decay rate, yielding a clean prediction of its branching ratio, $2.3\times10^{-5}$, measurable with BaBar or Belle(-II) data. For $\ell=\mu$, both contributions have similar magnitude and we get a branching fraction of $(1.6\pm0.3)\times10^{-7}$, reachable by the end of Belle-II operation. These decays allow to study the dynamics of strong interactions with simultaneous weak and electromagnetic probes; their knowledge will contribute to reducing backgrounds in lepton flavor/number violating searches.

New $\tau$-based evaluation of the hadronic contribution to the vacuum polarization piece of the muon anomalous magnetic moment

We revisit the isospin-breaking and electromagnetic corrections to the decay $\tau^-\to\pi^-\pi^0\nu_\tau$, which allow its use as input in the two-pion contribution to the (leading order) hadronic vacuum polarization part of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We extend a previous resonance chiral Lagrangian analysis, which included those operators saturating the next-to-leading order chiral low energy constants, by including the contributions of the next subleading terms. As a result, we improve agreement between the two-pion tau decay and $e^+e^-$ data and reduce the discrepancy between experiment and the SM prediction of $a_\mu$ (using $\tau$ input).

Effects of heavy Majorana neutrinos on lepton flavor violating processes

The observation of lepton flavor violating processes at colliders could be a clear signal of a non-minimal neutrino sector. We define a 5-parameter model with a pair of TeV fermion singlets and arbitrary mixings with the three active neutrino flavors. Then we analyze several flavor violating transitions ($\ell\to \ell^{\prime}\gamma,\,\ell^{\prime}\ell^{\prime\prime}\bar{\ell}^{\prime\prime\prime}$ or $\mu-e$ conversions in nuclei) and $Z\to\bar{\ell}\,\ell^{\prime}$ decays induced by the presence of heavy neutrinos. In particular, we calculate all the one-loop contributions to these processes and present their analytic expressions. We focus on the genuine effects of the heavy Majorana masses, comparing the results in that case with the ones obtained when the two heavy neutrinos define a Dirac field. Finally, we use our results to update the bounds on the heavy-light mixings in the neutrino sector.

Contribution of neutral pseudoscalar mesons to $a_\mu^{HLbL}$ within a Schwinger-Dyson equations approach to QCD

A continuum approach to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), based upon Schwinger-Dyson (SD) and Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equations, is employed to provide a tightly constrained prediction for the $\gamma^{*} \gamma^{*} \rightarrow \{ \pi^0, \eta, \eta', \eta_c, \eta_b \}$ transition form factors (TFFs) and their corresponding pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) piece of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon ($a_\mu$). This work relies on a practical and well-tested quark-photon vertex Ansatz approach to evaluate the TFFs for arbitrary space-like photon virtualities, in the impulse approximation. The numerical results are parametrized meticulously, ensuring a reliable evaluation of the HLbL contributions to $a_\mu$. We obtain: $a_{\mu}^{\pi^0-\textrm{pole}} = (6.14 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-10}$, $a_{\mu}^{\eta-\textrm{pole}} = (1.47 \pm 0.19) \times 10^{-10}$, $a_{\mu}^{\eta'-\textrm{pole}} = (1.36 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-10}$, yielding a total value of $a_{\mu}^{\pi^0+\eta+\eta'-\textrm{pole}} = (8.97 \pm 0.48) \times 10^{-10}$, compatible with contemporary determinations. Notably, we find that $a_{\mu}^{\eta_c+\eta_b-\textrm{pole}} \approx a_{\mu}^{\eta_c-\textrm{pole}} = (0.09 \pm 0.01) \times 10^{-10}$, which might not be negligible once the percent precision in the computation of the light pseudoscalars is reached.

The Belle II Physics Book

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

Flavor violating leptonic decays of $\tau$ and $\mu$ leptons in the Standard Model with massive neutrinos

We have revisited the computations of the flavor violating leptonic decays of the $\tau$ and $\mu$ leptons into three lighter charged leptons in the Standard Model with non-vanishing neutrino masses. We were driven by a claimed unnaturally large branching ratio predicted for the $\tau^-\to \mu^- \ell^+ \ell^-$ ($\ell=\mu, e$) decays \cite{Pham:1998fq}, which was at odds with the corresponding predictions for the $\mu^-\to e^- e^-e^+$ processes \cite{Petcov:1976ff}. In contrast with the prediction in \cite{Pham:1998fq}, our results are strongly suppressed and in good agreement with the approximation done in ref.~\cite{Petcov:1976ff}, where masses and momenta of the external particles were neglected in order to deal with the loop integrals. However, as a result of keeping external momenta and masses in the computation of the dominant penguin and box diagrams- we even find slightly smaller branching fractions. Therefore, we confirm that any future observation of such processes would be an unambiguous manifestation of new physics beyond the Standard Model

Effective-field theory analysis of the $\tau^-\to \pi^-\pi^0\nu_\tau$ decays

We perform an effective field theory analysis of the $\tau^- \to \pi^- \pi^0 \nu_\tau$ decays, that includes the most general interactions between Standard Model fields up to dimension six, assuming left-handed neutrinos. We constrain as much as possible the necessary Standard Model hadronic input using chiral symmetry, dispersion relations, data and asymptotic QCD properties. As a result, we set precise (competitive with low-energy and LHC measurements) bounds on (non-standard) charged current tensor interactions, finding a very small preference for their presence, according to Belle data. Belle-II near future measurements can thus be very useful in either confirming or further restricting new physics tensor current contributions to these decays. For this, the spectrum in the di-pion invariant mass turns out to be particularly promising. Distributions in the angle defined by the $\tau^-$ and $\pi^-$ momenta can also be helpful if measured with less than $10\%$ accuracy, both for non-standard scalar and tensor interactions.

Pseudoscalar pole light-by-light contributions to the muon $(g-2)$ in Resonance Chiral Theory

We have studied the $P\to\gamma^\star\gamma^\star$ transition form-factors ($P=\pi^0,\eta,\eta'$) within a chiral invariant framework that allows us to relate the three form-factors and evaluate the corresponding contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_\mu$, through pseudoscalar pole contributions. We use a chiral invariant Lagrangian to describe the interactions between the pseudo-Goldstones from the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the massive meson resonances. We will consider just the lightest vector and pseudoscalar resonance multiplets. Photon interactions and flavor breaking effects are accounted for in this covariant framework. This article studies the most general corrections of order $m_P^2$ within this setting. Requiring short-distance constraints fixes most of the parameters entering the form-factors, consistent with previous determinations. The remaining ones are obtained from a fit of these form-factors to experimental measurements in the space-like ($q^2\le0$) region of photon momenta. The combination of data, chiral symmetry relations between form-factors and high-energy constraints allows us to determine with improved precision the on-shell $P$-pole contribution to the Hadronic Light-by-Light scattering of the muon anomalous magnetic moment: we obtain $a_{\mu}^{P,HLbL}=(8.47\pm 0.16)\cdot10^{-10}$ for our best fit. This result was obtained excluding BaBar $\pi^0$ data, which our analysis finds in conflict with the remaining experimental inputs. This study also allows us to determine the parameters describing the $\eta-\eta'$ system in the two-mixing angle scheme and their correlations. Finally, a preliminary rough estimate of the impact of loop corrections ($1/N_C$) and higher vector multiplets (asym) enlarges the uncertainty up to $a_\mu^{P,HLbL} = (8.47\pm 0.16_{\rm sta}\pm0.09_{1/N_C}{}^{+0.5}_{-0.0}{}_{\rm asym})\cdot 10^{-10}$.

Effective-field theory analysis of the $\tau^- \to \eta^{(\prime)} \pi^- \nu_\tau$ decays

The rare $\tau^- \to \eta^{(\prime)} \pi^- \nu_\tau$ decays, which are suppressed by $G$-parity in the Standard Model (SM), can be sensitive to the effects of new interactions. We study the sensitivity of different observables of these decays in the framework of an effective field theory that includes the most general interactions between SM fields up to dimension six, assuming massless neutrinos. Owing to the strong suppression of the SM isospin breaking amplitudes, we find that the different observables would allow to set constraints on scalar interactions that are stronger than those coming from other low-energy observables.

G-parity breaking in $τ^- \to η^{(\prime)} π^- ν_τ$ decays induced by the $η^{(\prime)}γγ$ form factor

Breaking of G-parity or new weak (second class) currents can be responsible for $τ^- \to η^{(\prime)} π^- ν_τ$ decays. Forthcoming measurements of $τ$ lepton properties at the Belle II experiment will be able to measure this decay channel for the first time. Isolating new physics contributions from the measured rates will require a careful evaluation of G-parity breaking contributions. Here we evaluate the one-loop contribution to $τ^- \to η^{(\prime)} π^- ν_τ$ decays induced by the emission of two virtual photons and its later conversion into an $η^{(\prime)}$ meson. As expected, this contribution is very small and may be relevant only for new physics searches contributing at the $10^{-4}$ level to the decay rate of $τ^- \to η^{(\prime)} π^- ν_τ$ .

$τ^-\toη^{(\prime)}π^-ν_τγ$ decays as backgrounds in the search for second class currents

Observation of $τ^-\toη^{(\prime)}π^-ν_τ$ decays at Belle-II would indicate either a manifestation of isospin symmetry breaking or genuine second class currents (SCC) effects. The corresponding radiative $τ^-\toη^{(\prime)}π^-ν_τγ$ decay channels are not suppressed by $G$-parity considerations and may represent a serious background in searches of SCC in the former. We compute the observables associated to these radiative decays using Resonance Chiral Lagrangians and conclude that vetoing photons with $E_γ>100$ MeV should get rid of this background in the Belle-II environment searching for the $τ^-\toηπ^-ν_τ$ channel. Similar considerations hold inconclusive for decays involving the $η^\prime$ given the theory uncertainties in the prediction of the $τ^-\toη^\primeπ^-ν_τ$ branching ratio. Still, additional kinematics-based cuts should be able to suppress this background in the $η^\prime$ case to a negligible level.
