Direct observation of spatio-temporal dynamics of short electron bunches in storage rings

In recent synchrotron radiation facilities, the use of short (picosecond) electron bunches is a powerful method for producing giant pulses of Terahertz Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (THz CSR). Here we report on the first direct observation of these pulse shapes with a few picoseconds resolution, and of their dynamics over a long time. We thus confirm in a very direct way the theories predicting an interplay between two physical processes. Below a critical bunch charge, we observe a train of identical THz pulses (a broadband Terahertz comb) stemming from the shortness of the electron bunches. Above this threshold, a large part of the emission is dominated by drifting structures, which appear through spontaneous self-organization. These challenging single-shot THz recordings are made possible by using a recently developed photonic time stretch detector with a high sensitivity. The experiment has been realized at the SOLEIL storage ring.

An analysis of the zero energy states in graphene

Using the concept of complex non PT symmetric potential we study creation of zero energy states in graphene by a scalar potential. The admissible range of the potential parameter values for which such states exist has been examined. The situation with respect to the holes has also been investigated.

Study of $^{26}$Mg through 1p pick up reaction $^{27}$Al(d,$^{3}$He)

The even-even nucleus $^{26}$Mg has been studied through the reaction $^{27}$Al(d,$^{3}$He) at 25 MeV beam energy. The spectroscopic factors have been extracted upto 7.50 MeV excitation energy using local, zero range distorted wave Born approximation. The comparison of the spectroscopic factors have been done with previously reported values using the same reaction probe. The extracted spectroscopic factors for different excited states were found to be in good agreement with the previously reported values for the same. The present results were also compared with the predictions from shell model as well as rotational model. The analog states of $^{26}$Al and $^{26}$Mg were found to be in good agreement.

No influence of a N=126 Neutron Shell Closure in Fission Fragment Mass Distributions

Mass distributions of the fragments in the fission of $^{206}$Po and the N=126 neutron shell closed nucleus $^{210}$Po have been measured. No significant deviation of mass distributions has been found between $^{206}$Po and $^{210}$Po, indicating the absence of shell correction at the saddle point in both the nuclei, contrary to the reported angular anisotropy and pre-scission neutron multiplicity results. This new result provides benchmark data to test the new fission dynamical models to study the effect of shell correction on the potential energy surface at saddle point.

Quantum phase transitions of the Dirac oscillator in the Anti-Snyder model

We obtain exact solutions of the (2+1) dimensional Dirac oscillator in a homogeneous magnetic field within the Anti-Snyder modified uncertainty relation characterized by a momentum cut-off ($p\leq p_{\text{max}}=1/ \sqrtβ$). In ordinary quantum mechanics ($β\to 0$) this system is known to have a single left-right chiral quantum phase transition (QPT). We show that a finite momentum cut-off modifies the spectrum introducing additional quantum phase transitions. It is also shown that the presence of momentum cut-off modifies the degeneracy of the states.

Direct Evidence of Washing out of Nuclear Shell Effects

Constraining excitation energy at which nuclear shell effect washes out has important implications on the production of super heavy elements and many other fields of nuclear physics research. We report the fission fragment mass distribution in alpha induced reaction on an actinide target for wide excitation range in close energy interval and show direct evidence that nuclear shell effect washes out at excitation energy ~40 MeV. Calculation shows that second peak of the fission barrier also vanishes around similar excitation energy.

Observing microscopic structures of a relativistic object using a time -stretch strategy

Emission of light by a single electron moving on a curved trajectory (synchrotron radiation) is one of the most well-known fundamental radiation phenomena. However experimental situations are more complex as they involve many electrons, each being exposed to the radiation of its neighbors. This interaction has dramatic consequences, one of the most spectacular being the spontaneous formation of spatial structures inside electrons bunches. This fundamental effect is actively studied as it represents one of the most fundamental limitations in electron accelerators, and at the same time a source of intense terahertz radiation (Coherent Synchrotron Radiation, or CSR). Here we demonstrate the possibility to directly observe the electron bunch microstructures with subpicosecond resolution, in a storage ring accelerator. The principle is to monitor the terahertz pulses emitted by the structures, using a strategy from photonics, time-stretch, consisting in slowing-down the phenomena before recording. This opens the way to unpreceeded possibilities for analyzing and mastering new generation high power coherent synchrotron sources.

Dirac equation with complex potentials

We study $(2+1)$ dimensional Dirac equation with complex scalar and Lorentz scalar potentials. It is shown that the Dirac equation admits exact analytical solutions with real eigenvalues for certain complex potentials while for another class of potentials zero energy solutions can be obtained analytically. For the scalar potential cases, it has also been shown that the {\it effective} Schrödinger-like equations resulting from decoupling the spinor components can be interpreted as exactly solvable energy dependent Schrödinger equations.

Quantum phase transitions of the Dirac oscillator in a minimal length scenario

We obtain exact solutions of the (2+1) dimensional Dirac oscillator in a homogeneous magnetic field within a minimal length ($Δx_0=\hbar \sqrtβ$), or generalised uncertainty principle (GUP) scenario. This system in ordinary quantum mechanics has a single left-right chiral quantum phase transition (QPT). We show that a non zero minimal length turns on a infinite number of quantum phase transitions which accumulate towards the known QPT when $β\to 0$. It is also shown that the presence of the minimal length modifies the degeneracy of the states and that in this case there exist a new class of states which do not survive in the ordinary quantum mechanics limit $β\to 0$.

High density THz frequency comb produced by coherent synchrotron radiation

Frequency combs (FC) have radically changed the landscape of frequency metrology and high-resolution spectroscopy investigations extending tremendously the achievable resolution while increasing signal to noise ratio. Initially developed in the visible and near-IR spectral regions, the use of FC has been expanded to mid-IR, extreme ultra-violet and X-ray. Significant effort is presently dedicated to the generation of FC at THz frequencies. One solution based on converting a stabilized optical frequency comb using a photoconductive terahertz emitter, remains hampered by the low available THz power. Another approach is based on active mode locked THz quantum-cascade-lasers providing intense FC over a relatively limited spectral extension. Alternatively, here we show that dense powerful THz FC is generated over one decade of frequency by coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). In this mode, the entire ring behaves in a similar fashion to a THz resonator wherein electron bunches emit powerful THz pulses quasi-synchronously. This FC presents unprecedented spectral characteristics and opens new perspectives for metrology investigations.

Moment evolution across the ferromagnetic phase transition of giant magnetocaloric (Mn,Fe)2(P,Si,B) compounds

A strong electronic reconstruction resulting in a quenching of the Fe magnetic moments has recently been predicted to be at the origin of the giant magnetocaloric effect displayed by Fe2Pbased materials. To verify this scenario, X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism experiments have been carried out at the L edges of Mn and Fe for two typical compositions of the (Mn,Fe)2(P,Si,B) system. The dichroic absorption spectra of Mn and Fe have been measured element specific in the vicinity of the first-order ferromagnetic transition. The experimental spectra are compared with first-principle calculations and charge-transfer multiplet simulations in order to derive the magnetic moments. Even though signatures of a metamagnetic behaviour are observed either as a function of the temperature or the magnetic field, the similarity of the Mn and Fe moment evolution suggests that the quenching of the Fe moment is weaker than previously predicted.

Quantum phase transitions in the noncommutative Dirac Oscillator

We study the (2+1) dimensional Dirac oscillator in a homogeneous magnetic field in the non-commutative plane. It is shown that the effect of non-commutativity is twofold: $i$) momentum non commuting coordinates simply shift the critical value ($B_{\text{cr}}$) of the magnetic field at which the well known left-right chiral quantum phase transition takes place (in the commuting phase); $ii$) non-commutativity in the space coordinates induces a new critical value of the magnetic field, $B_{\text{cr}}^*$, where there is a second quantum phase transition (right-left), --this critical point disappears in the commutative limit--. The change in chirality associated with the magnitude of the magnetic field is examined in detail for both critical points. The phase transitions are described in terms of the magnetisation of the system. Possible applications to the physics of silicene and graphene are briefly discussed.

Electron localization and possible phase separation in the absence of a charge density wave in single-phase 1T-VS$_2$

We report on a systematic study of the structural, magnetic and transport properties of high-purity 1T-VS$_2$ powder samples prepared under high pressure. The results differ notably from those previously obtained by de-intercalating Li from LiVS$_2$. First, no Charge Density Wave (CDW) is found by transmission electron microscopy down to 94 K. Though, \textit{ab initio} phonon calculations unveil a latent CDW instability driven by an acoustic phonon softening at the wave vector ${\bf q}_{CDW} \approx$ (0.21,0.21,0) previously reported in de-intercalated samples. A further indication of latent lattice instability is given by an anomalous expansion of the V-S bond distance at low temperature. Second, infrared optical absorption and electrical resistivity measurements give evidence of non metallic properties, consistent with the observation of no CDW phase. On the other hand, magnetic susceptibility and NMR data suggest the coexistence of localized moments with metallic carriers, in agreement with \textit{ab initio} band structure calculations. This discrepancy is reconciled by a picture of electron localization induced by disorder or electronic correlations leading to a phase separation of metallic and non-metallic domains in the nm scale. We conclude that 1T-VS$_2$ is at the verge of a CDW transition and suggest that residual electronic doping in Li de-intercalated samples stabilizes a uniform CDW phase with metallic properties.

Lattice and spin excitations in multiferroic h-YMnO3

We used Raman and terahertz spectroscopies to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations and their cross-coupling in the hexagonal YMnO3 multiferroic. Two phonon modes are strongly affected by the magnetic order. Magnon excitations have been identified thanks to comparison with neutron measurements and spin wave calculations but no electromagnon has been observed. In addition, we evidenced two additional Raman active peaks. We have compared this observation with the anti-crossing between magnon and acoustic phonon branches measured by neutron. These optical measurements underly the unusual strong spin-phonon coupling.

Localized exact solutions of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger equation with space and time modulated nonlinearities

Using canonical transformations we obtain localized (in space) exact solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with space and time modulated nonlinearity and in the presence of an external potential depending on space and time. In particular we obtain exact solutions of NLSE in the presence of a number of non Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric external potentials.

LaAlO3 stoichiometry found key to electron liquid formation at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces

Emergent phenomena, including superconductivity and magnetism, found in the two-dimensional electron liquid (2-DEL) at the interface between the insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 distinguish this rich system from conventional two-dimensional electron gases at compound semiconductor interfaces. The origin of this 2-DEL, however, is highly debated with focus on the role of defects in the SrTiO3 while the LaAlO3 has been assumed perfect. Our experiments and first principles calculations show that the cation stoichiometry of the nominal LaAlO3 layer is key to 2-DEL formation: only Al-rich LaAlO3 results in a 2-DEL. While extrinsic defects including oxygen deficiency are known to render LaAlO3/SrTiO3 samples conducting, our results show that in the absence of such extrinsic defects, an interface 2-DEL can form. Its origin is consistent with an intrinsic electronic reconstruction occurring to counteract a polarization catastrophe. This work provides a roadmap for identifying other interfaces where emergent behaviors await discovery.
