The transience and persistence of high optical polarization state in beamed radio quasars

We examine the long-term stability (on decade-like time scales) of optical `high polarization' (HP) state with $p_{opt}$ $> 3\%$, which commonly occurs in flat-spectrum (i.e., beamed) radio quasars (FSRQs) and is a prominent marker of blazar state. Using this clue, roughly a quarter of the FSRQ population has been reported to undergo HP $\leftrightarrow$ non-HP state transition on year-like time scales. This work examines the extent to which HP (i.e., blazar) state can endure in a FSRQ, despite these `frequent' state transitions. This is the first attempt to verify, using purely opto-polarimetric data for a much enlarged sample of blazars, the recent curious finding that blazar state in individual quasars persists for {\it at least} a few decades, despite its changing/swinging observed fairly commonly on year-like time scales. The present analysis is based on a well-defined sample of 83 radio quasars, extracted from the opto-polarimetric survey RoboPol (2013-17), for which old opto-polarimetric data taken prior to 1990 could be found in the literature. By a source-wise comparison of these two datasets of the same observable ($p_{opt}$), we find that $\sim$ 90% of the 63 quasars found in blazar state in our RoboPol sample, were also observed to be in that state about 3 decades before. On the other hand, within the RoboPol survey itself, we find that roughly a quarter of the blazars in our sample migrated to the other polarization state on year-like time scales, by crossing the customary $p_{opt}$ = 3% threshold. Evidently, these relatively frequent transitions (in either direction) do not curtail the propensity of a radio quasar to retain its blazar (i.e., HP) state for at least a few decades. The observed transitions/swings of polarization state are probably manifestation of transient processes, like ejections of synchrotron plasma blobs (VLBI radio knots) from the active nucleus.

Intranight optical variability of low-mass Active Galactic Nuclei: A Pointer to blazar-like activity

This study aims to characterise, for the first time, intranight optical variability (INOV) of low-mass active galactic nuclei (LMAGN) which host a black hole (BH) of mass $M_{BH} \sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$, i.e., even less massive than the Galactic centre black hole Sgr A* and 2-3 orders of magnitude below the supermassive black holes (SMBH, $M_{BH}$ $\sim$ $10^8 - 10^9 M_{\odot}$) which are believed to power quasars. Thus, LMAGN are a crucial subclass of AGN filling the wide gap between SMBH and stellar-mass BHs of Galactic X-ray binaries. We have carried out a 36-session campaign of intranight optical monitoring of a well-defined, representative sample of 12 LMAGNs already detected in X-ray and radio bands. This set of LMAGN is found to exhibit INOV at a level statistically comparable to that observed for blazars (M$_{BH} \gtrsim$ 10$^{8-9}$ M$_{\odot}$) and for the $γ$-ray detected Narrow-line Seyfert1 galaxies (M$_{BH}\sim 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$) which, too, are believed to have relativistic jets. This indicates that the blazar-level activity can even be sustained by central engines with black holes near the upper limit for Intermediate Mass Black Holes ($M_{BH}$ $\sim$ $10^3 - 10^6 M_{\odot}$).

Intranight variability of UV emission from powerful blazars

We report the first study to characterise intranight variability of the blazar class from the perspective of (rest-frame) UV emission. For this, we carried out intranight optical monitoring of 14 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) located at high redshifts (1.5 < $z$ < 3.7), in 42 sessions of median duration $\sim$ 5.4 hr. These sources were grouped into two samples distinguished by published fractional optical polarisation: (i) nine low-polarisation sources with $p_{opt} < 3\%$ and (ii) five high-polarisation sources. Unexpectedly, a high duty cycle (DC $\sim$ 30$\%$) is found for intranight variability (with amplitude $ψ> 3\%$) of the low-polarisation sources. This DC is a few times higher than that reported for low-polarisation FSRQs located at moderate redshifts ($z$ $\sim$ 0.7) and hence typically monitored in the rest-frame blue-optical. Further, we found no evidence for an increased intranight variability of UV emission with polarisation, in contrast to the strong correlation found for intranight variability of optical emission. We briefly discuss this in the context of an existing scenario which posits that the nonthermal UV emission of blazars arises from a relativistic particle population different from that radiating up to near-infrared/optical frequencies.

Photometric variability of the pre-main sequence stars towards the Sh 2-190 region

We present the results from our time-series imaging data taken with the 1.3m Devasthal fast optical telescope and 0.81m Tenagara telescope in $V$, $R_{c}$, $I_{c}$ bands covering an area of $\sim18^\prime.4\times 18^\prime.4$ towards the star-forming region Sh 2-190. This photometric data helped us to explore the nature of the variability of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. We have identified 85 PMS variables, i.e., 37 Class II and 48 Class III sources. Forty-five of the PMS variables are showing periodicity in their light curves. We show that the stars with thicker discs and envelopes rotate slower and exhibit larger photometric variations compared to their disc-less counterparts. This result suggests that rotation of the PMS stars is regulated by the presence of circumstellar discs. We also found that the period of the stars show a decreasing trend with increasing mass in the range of $\sim$0.5-2.5 M$_\odot$. Our result indicates that most of the variability in Class II sources is ascribed to the presence of thick disc, while the presence of cool spots on the stellar surface causes the brightness variation in Class III sources. X-ray activities in the PMS stars were found to be at the saturation level reported for the main sequence (MS) stars. The younger counterparts of the PMS variables are showing less X-ray activity hinting towards a less significant role of a stellar disc in X-ray generation.

Variable stars in the Sh 2-170 HII region

We present multi-epoch deep ($\sim$20 mag) $I_{c}$~band photometric monitoring of the Sh 2-170 star-forming region to understand the variability properties of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. We report identification of 47 periodic and 24 non-periodic variable stars with periods and amplitudes ranging from $\sim$4 hrs to 18 days and from $\sim$0.1 to 2.0 mag, respectively. We have further classified 49 variables as PMS stars (17 Class\,{\sc ii} and 32 Class\,{\sc iii}) and 17 as main-sequence (MS)/field star variables. A larger fraction of MS/field variables (88\%) show periodic variability as compared to the PMS variables (59\%). The ages and masses of the PMS variable stars are found to be comparable with those of T-Tauri stars. Their variability amplitudes show an increasing trend with the near-IR/mid-IR excess. The period distribution of the PMS variables shows two peaks, one near $\sim$1.5 days and the other near $\sim$4.5 days. It is found that the younger stars with thicker discs and envelopes seem to rotate slower than their older counterparts. These properties of the PMS variables support the disc-locking mechanism. Both the period and amplitude of PMS stars show decrease with increasing mass probably due to the effective dispersal of circumstellar discs in massive stars. Our results favour the notion that cool spots on weak line T-Tauri stars are responsible for most of their variations, while hot spots on classical T-Tauri stars resulting from variable mass accretion from an inner disc contribute to their larger amplitudes and irregular behaviours.

Generalised Split Octonions and their transformation in SO(7) symmetry

Generators of SO(8) group have been described by using direct product of the Gamma matrices and the Pauli Sigma matrices. We have obtained these generators in terms of generalized split octonion also. These generators have been used to describe the rotational transformation of vectors for SO(7) symmetry group.

Octonion and Split Octonion Representation of SO(8) Symmetry

The 8 $\times$ 8 matrix representation of SO(8) Symmetry has been defined by using the direct product of Pauli matrices and Gamma matrices. These 8 $\times$ 8 matrices are being used to describe the rotations in SO(8) symmetry. The comparison of 8$\times$8 matrices with octonions has also been shown. The transformations of SO(8) symmetry are represented with the help of Octonions and split Octonions spinors.

Quaternion-Octonion Unitary Symmetries and Analogous Casimir Operators

An attempt has been made to investigate the global SU(2) and SU(3) unitary flavor symmetries systematically in terms of quaternion and octonion respectively. It is shown that these symmetries are suitably handled with quaternions and octonions in order to obtain their generators, commutation rules and symmetry properties. Accordingly, Casimir operators for SU(2)and SU(3) flavor symmetries are also constructed for the proper testing of these symmetries in terms of quaternions and octonions.

Octonion Quantum Chromodynamics

Starting with the usual definitions of octonions, an attempt has been made to establish the relations between octonion basis elements and Gell-Mann λmatrices of SU(3)symmetry on comparing the multiplication tables for Gell-Mann λmatrices of SU(3)symmetry and octonion basis elements. Consequently, the quantum chromo dynamics (QCD) has been reformulated and it is shown that the theory of strong interactions could be explained better in terms of non-associative octonion algebra. Further, the octonion automorphism group SU(3) has been suitably handled with split basis of octonion algebra showing that the SU(3)_{C}gauge theory of colored quarks carries two real gauge fields which are responsible for the existence of two gauge potentials respectively associated with electric charge and magnetic monopole and supports well the idea that the colored quarks are dyons.

Quaternion Octonion Reformulation of Grand Unified Theories

In this paper, Grand Unified theories are discussed in terms of quaternions and octonions by using the relation between quaternion basis elements with Pauli matrices and Octonions with Gell Mann λmatrices. Connection between the unitary groups of GUTs and the normed division algebra has been established to re-describe the SU(5)gauge group. We have thus described the SU(5)gauge group and its subgroup SU(3)_{C}\times SU(2)_{L}\times U(1) by using quaternion and octonion basis elements. As such the connection between U(1) gauge group and complex number, SU(2) gauge group and quaternions and SU(3) and octonions is established. It is concluded that the division algebra approach to the the theory of unification of fundamental interactions as the case of GUTs leads to the consequences towards the new understanding of these theories which incorporate the existence of magnetic monopole and dyon.

Quaternion-Octonion SU(3) Flavor Symmetry

Starting with the quaternionic formulation of isospin SU(2) group, we have derived the relations for different components of isospin with quark states. Extending this formalism to the case of SU(3) group we have considered the theory of octonion variables. Accordingly, the octonion splitting of SU(3) group have been reconsidered and various commutation relations for SU(3) group and its shift operators are also derived and verified for different iso-spin multiplets i.e. I, U and V- spins. Generalization of Schwinger-Zwanziger Dyon to Quaternion

Postulating the existence of magnetic monopole in electromagnetism and Heavisidian monopoles in gravitational interactions, a unified theory of gravi-electromagnetism has been developed on generalizing the Schwinger-Zwanziger formulation of dyon to quaternion in simple and consistent manner. Starting with the four Lorentz like forces on different charges, we have generalized the Schwinger-Zwanziger quantization parameters in order to obtain the angular momentum for unified fields of dyons and gravito-dyons (i.e. Gravi-electromagnetism). Taking the unified charge as quaternion, we have reformulated manifestly covariant and consistent theory for the dynamics of four charges namely electric, magnetic, gravitational and Heavisidian associated with gravi electromagnetism. Octonionic Reformulation of Vector Analysis

According to celebrated Hurwitz theorem, there exists four division algebras consisting of R (real numbers), C (complex numbers), H (quaternions) and O (octonions). Keeping in view the utility of octonion variable we have tried to extend the three dimensional vector analysis to seven dimensional one. Starting with the scalar and vector product in seven dimensions, we have redefined the gradient, divergence and curl in seven dimension. It is shown that the identity n(n-1)(n-3)(n-7)=0 is satisfied only for 0, 1, 3 and 7 dimensional vectors. We have tried to write all the vector inequalities and formulas in terms of seven dimensions and it is shown that same formulas loose their meaning in seven dimensions due to non-associativity of octonions. The vector formulas are retained only if we put certain restrictions on octonions and split octonions.

Generalized Split-Octonion Electrodynamics

Starting with the usual definitions of octonions and split octonions in terms of Zorn vector matrix realization, we have made an attempt to write the consistent form of generalized Maxwell's equations in presence of electric and magnetic charges (dyons). We have thus written the generalized potential, generalized field, and generalized current of dyons in terms of split octonions and accordingly the split octonion forms of generalized Dirac Maxwell's equations are obtained in compact and consistent manner. This theory reproduces the dynamic of electric (magnetic) in the absence of magnetic (electric) charges.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Presence of Electric and Magnetic Charges

Starting with the definition of quaternion gauge theory, we have undertaken the study of SU(2)_{e}\times SU(2)_{m}\times U(1)_{e}\times U(1)_{m} in terms of the simultaneous existence of electric and magnetic charges along with their Yang - Mills counterparts. As such, we have developed the gauge theory in terms of four coupling constants associated with four - gauge symmetry SU(2)_{e}\times SU(2)_{m}\times U(1)_{e}\times U(1)_{m}. Accordingly, we have made an attempt to obtain the abelian and non - Abelian gauge structures for the particles carrying simultaneously the electric and magnetic charges (namely dyons). Starting from the Lagrangian density of two SU(2)\times U(1) gauge theories responsible for the existence of electric and magnetic charges, we have discussed the consistent theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking and Higgs mechanism in order to generate the masses. From the symmetry breaking, we have generated the two electromagnetic fields, the two massive vector W^{\pm} and Z^{0} bosons fields and the Higgs scalar fields.

Quaternion Octonion Reformulation of Quantum Chromodynamics

We have made an attempt to develop the quaternionic formulation of Yang - Mill's field equations and octonion reformulation of quantum chromo dynamics (QCD). Starting with the Lagrangian density, we have discussed the field equations of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge fields for both cases of global and local gauge symmetries. It has been shown that the three quaternion units explain the structure of Yang- Mill's field while the seven octonion units provide the consistent structure of SU(3)_{C} gauge symmetry of quantum chromo dynamics.

Magnetohydrodynamics in Presence of Electric and Magnetic charges

Starting with the generalized electromagnetic field equations of dyons, we have discussed the theory of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of plasma for particles carrying simultaneously the electric and magnetic charges (namely dyons). It is shown that the resultant system supports the electromagnetic duality of dyons. Consequently the frequency of dyonic plasma has been obtained and it is emphasized that there is a different plasma frequency for each species depending on wave number k. For k to be real, only those generalized electromagnetic waves are allowed to pass, for which the usual frequency is greater than the plasma frequency (i.e. ω>ω_{p}). It is shown that the plasma frequency sets the lower cuts for the frequencies of electromagnetic radiation that can pass through a plasma . Accordingly the ohm's law has been reestablished to derive the plasma oscillation equation as well as the magetohydrodynamic wave equation and the energy of dyons in unique and consistent manner.

Generalized Gravi-Electromagnetism

A self consistant and manifestly covariant theory for the dynamics of four charges (masses) (namely electric, magnetic, gravitational, Heavisidian) has been developed in simple, compact and consistent manner. Starting with an invariant Lagrangian density and its quaternionic representation, we have obtained the consistent field equation for the dynamics of four charges. It has been shown that the present reformulation reproduces the dynamics of individual charges (masses) in the absence of other charge (masses) as well as the generalized theory of dyons (gravito - dyons) in the absence gravito - dyons (dyons). key words: dyons, gravito - dyons, quaternion PACS NO: 14.80Hv
