Constraints on Kaluza-Klein gravity from Gravity Probe B

Using measurements of geodetic precession from Gravity Probe B, we constrain possible departures from Einstein's General Relativity for a spinning test body in Kaluza-Klein gravity with one additional space dimension. We consider the two known static and spherically symmetric solutions of the 5D field equations (the soliton and canonical metrics) and obtain new limits on the free parameters associated with each. The theory is consistent with observation but must be "close to 4D" in both cases.

Mach, the Universe, and Foundations of Mechanics

Barbour's response to our recent paper on "Mach's principle and higher-dimensional dynamics" describes an approach to Mach's principle in which the universe as a whole is involved in the definition of inertial frames of reference. Moreover, Barbour's theoretical procedure is in agreement with general relativity for a finite universe that is spatially closed. However, we prefer an operational approach that relies ultimately on observational data.

Mach's Principle and Higher-Dimensional Dynamics

We briefly discuss the current status of Mach's principle in general relativity and point out that its last vestige, namely, the gravitomagnetic field associated with rotation, has recently been measured for the earth in the GP-B experiment. Furthermore, in his analysis of the foundations of Newtonian mechanics, Mach provided an operational definition for inertial mass and pointed out that time and space are conceptually distinct from their operational definitions by means of masses. Mach recognized that this circumstance is due to the lack of any a priori connection between the inertial mass of a body and its Newtonian state in space and time. One possible way to improve upon this situation in classical physics is to associate mass with an extra dimension. Indeed, Einstein's theory of gravitation can be locally embedded in a Ricci-flat 5D manifold such that the 4D energy-momentum tensor appears to originate from the existence of the extra dimension. An outline of such a 5D Machian extension of Einstein's general relativity is presented.

Decaying Dark Energy in Higher-Dimensional Gravity

We use data from observational cosmology to put constraints on higher-dimensional extensions of general relativity in which the effective four-dimensional dark-energy density (or cosmological "constant") decays with time. In particular we study the implications of this decaying dark energy for the age of the universe, large-scale structure formation, big-bang nucleosynthesis and the magnitude-redshift relation for Type Ia supernovae. Two of these tests (age and the magnitude-redshift relation) place modest lower limits on the free parameter of the theory, a cosmological length scale L akin to the de Sitter radius. These limits will improve if experimental uncertainties on supernova magnitudes can be reduced around z=1.

Universe Evolution in a 5D Ricci-flat Cosmology

We use Wetterich's parameterization equation of state (EOS) of dark energy to a $5D$ Ricci-flat cosmological solution and we suppose the universe contains three major components: matter, radiation and dark energy. By using the relation between the scale factor and the redshift $z$, we show that the two arbitrary functions contained in the $5D$ solution could be solved out analytically in terms of the variable $z$. Thus the whole $5D$ solution could be constructed uniquely if the current values of the three density parameters $Ω_{m0}$, ${Ω_{r0}}$, $Ω_{x0}$, the EOS $w_{0}$%, and the bending parameter $b$ contained in the EOS are all known. Furthermore, we find that all the evolutions of the mass density $Ω_{m} $, the radiation density ${Ω_{r}}$, the dark energy density $Ω_{x}$, and the deceleration parameter $q$ depend on the bending parameter $b$ sensitively. Therefore it is deserved to study observational constraints on the bending parameter $b$.

An exact self-similar solution for an expanding ball of radiation

We give an exact solution of the $5D$ Einstein equations which in 4D can be interpreted as a spherically symmetric dissipative distribution of matter, with heat flux, whose effective density and pressure are nonstatic, nonuniform, and satisfy the equation of state of radiation. The matter satisfies the usual energy and thermodynamic conditions. The energy density and temperature are related by the Stefan-Boltzmann law. The solution admits a homothetic Killing vector in $5D$, which induces the existence of self-similar symmetry in 4D, where the line element as well as the dimensionless matter quantities are invariant under a simple "scaling" group.

Dark Matter and Background Light

Progress in observational cosmology over the past five years has established that the Universe is dominated dynamically by dark matter and dark energy. Both these new and apparently independent forms of matter-energy have properties that are inconsistent with anything in the existing standard model of particle physics, and it appears that the latter must be extended. We review what is known about dark matter and energy from their impact on the light of the night sky. Most of the candidates that have been proposed so far are not perfectly black, but decay into or otherwise interact with photons in characteristic ways that can be accurately modelled and compared with observational data. We show how experimental limits on the intensity of cosmic background radiation in the microwave, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, x-ray and gamma-ray bands put strong limits on decaying vacuum energy, light axions, neutrinos, unstable weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs) and objects like black holes. Our conclusion is that the dark matter is most likely to be WIMPs if conventional cosmology holds; or higher-dimensional sources if spacetime needs to be extended.

No ghost state of Gauss-Bonnet interaction in warped backgrounds

A general solution to the Einstein field equations with Gauss-Bonnet(GB) term in the $AdS_5$ bulk background implies that the GB coupling $α$ can take either sign (+ or -), though a positive $α$ will be more meaningful. By considering linearized gravity with the GB term in the Randall-Sundrum(RS) a singular 3-brane model, we study the gravitational interactions between matter sources localized on the brane. With a correctly defined boundary condition on the brane, we find a smooth behavior of graviton propagator and hence the zero-mode solution as a 4d massless graviton localized on the brane with correct momentum and tensor structures. The coupling $α$ modifies the graviton propagators both on the brane and in the bulk. The issue on ghost state of the GB term is resolved, and we find that there is no real ghost (negative norm) state of the GB term in the RS single brane picture. The latter condition leads to a consistency in the coupling between the brane matter and the bulk gravity. We also elucidate about the possibilities for behavior of a test particle on the brane and in the bulk.

Gravitational conformal invariance and coupling constants in Kaluza-Klein theory

We introduce a generalized gravitational conformal invariance in the context of non-compactified 5D Kaluza-Klein theory. It is done by assuming the 4D metric to be dependent on the extra non-compactified dimension. It is then shown that the conformal invariance in 5D is broken by taking an absolute cosmological scale $R_0$ over which the 4D metric is assumed to be dependent weakly on the 5th dimension. This is equivalent to Deser's model for the breakdown of the conformal invariance in 4D by taking a constant cosmological mass term $μ^2\sim R_0^{-2}$ in the theory. We set the scalar field to its background cosmological value leading to Einstein equation with the gravitational constant $G_N$ and a small cosmological constant. A dual Einstein equation is also introduced in which the matter is coupled to the higher dimensional geometry by the coupling $G_N^{-1}$. Relevant interpretations of the results are also discussed.

Quantum cosmology of 5D non-compactified Kaluza-Klein theory

We study the quantum cosmology of a five dimensional non-compactified Kaluza-Klein theory where the 4D metric depends on the fifth coordinate, $x^4\equiv l$. This model is effectively equivalent to a 4D non-minimally coupled dilaton field in addition to matter generated on hypersurfaces l=constant by the extra coordinate dependence in the four-dimensional metric. We show that the Vilenkin wave function of the universe is more convenient for this model as it predicts a new-born 4D universe on the $l\simeq0$ constant hypersurface.

The big bang as a higher-dimensional shock wave

We give an exact solution of the five-dimensional field equations which describes a shock wave moving in time and the extra (Kaluza-Klein) coordinate. The matter in four-dimensional spacetime is a cosmology with good physical properties. The solution suggests to us that the 4D big bang was a 5D shock wave.

Possible Wormhole Solutions in (4+1) Gravity

We extend previous analyses of soliton solutions in (4+1) gravity to new ranges of their defining parameters. The geometry, as studied using invariants, has the topology of wormholes found in (3+1) gravity. In the induced-matter picture, the fluid does not satisfy the strong energy conditions, but its gravitational mass is positive. We infer the possible existance of (4+1) wormholes which, compared to their (3+1) counterparts, are less exotic.

Kaluza-Klein Gravity

We review higher-dimensional unified theories from the general relativity, rather than the particle physics side. Three distinct approaches to the subject are identified and contrasted: compactified, projective and noncompactified. We discuss the cosmological and astrophysical implications of extra dimensions, and conclude that none of the three approaches can be ruled out on observational grounds at the present time.
