Ca3(Ru1-xCrx)2O7: A new paradigm for spin valves

The spin valve effect is a quantum phenomenon so far only realized in multilayer thin films or heterostructures. Here we report a strong spin valve effect existing in bulk single crystals of Ca3(Ru1-xCrx)2O7 having an anisotropic, bilayered crystal structure. This discovery opens new avenues to understand the underlying physics of spin valves, and fully realize its potential in practical devices.

Non-Fermi-liquid behavior in nearly ferromagnetic metallic SrIrO3 single crystals

We report transport and thermodynamic properties of single-crystal SrIrO3 as a function of temperature T and applied magnetic field H. We find that SrIrO3 is a non-Fermi-liquid metal near a ferromagnetic instability, as characterized by the following properties: (1) small ordered moment but no evidence for long-range order down to 1.7 K; (2) strongly enhanced magnetic susceptibility that diverges as T or T1/2 at low temperatures, depending on the applied field; (3) heat capacity C(T,H) ~ -Tlog T that is readily amplified by low applied fields; (4) a strikingly large Wilson ratio at T< 4K; and (5) a T3/2-dependence of electrical resistivity over the range 1.7 < T < 120 K. A phase diagram based on the data implies SrIrO3 is a rare example of a stoichiometric oxide compound that exhibits non-Fermi-liquid behavior near a quantum critical point (T = 0 and H = 0.23 T).

Exotic Kondo-hole band resistivity and magnetoresistance of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$ alloys

Electrical resistivity measurements of non-magnetic single-crystalline Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$ alloys, $x=0.02$ and 0.1, are reported for temperatures down to 20 mK and magnetic fields up to 18 T. At the lowest temperatures, the resistivity of Ce$_{0.98}$La$_{0.02}$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has a Fermi-liquid-like temperature variation $ρ=ρ_0+A T^2$, but with negative $A$ in small fields. The resistivity has an unusually strong magnetic field dependence for a paramagnetic metal. The 20 mK resistivity increases by 75% between H=0 and 4 T and then decreases by 65% between 4 T and 18 T. Similarly, the $A$ coefficient increases with the field from -77 to 29$ μΩ$cmK$^{-2}$ between H=0 and 7 T and then decreases to 18$ μΩ$cmK$^{-2}$ for 18 T. This nontrivial temperature and field variation is attributed to the existence of a very narrow Kondo-hole band in the hybridization gap, which pins the Fermi energy. Due to disorder the Kondo-hole band has localized states close to the band edges. The resistivity for $x=0.1$ has a qualitatively similar behavior to that of $x=0.02$, but with a larger Kondo-hole band.

Partial antiferromagnetism in spin-chain Sr5Rh4O12, Ca5Ir3O12 and Ca4IrO6 single crystals

We report a structural, thermodynamic and transport study of the newly synthesized Sr5Rh4O12, Ca5Ir3O12 and Ca4IrO6 single crystals. These quasi-one-dimensional insulators consist of a triangular lattice of spin chains running along the c-axis, and are commonly characterized by a partial antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, a small entropy removal associated with the phase transitions and a sizable low-temperature specific heat linearly proportional to temperature. Sr5Rh4O12 is defined by an AFM order below 23 K with strong evidence for an Ising character and two step-like transitions in isothermal magnetization leading to a ferrimagnetic state at 2.4 T and a ferromagnetic state at 4.8 T, respectively. Ca5Ir3O12 and Ca4IrO6 are also antiferromagnetically ordered below 7.8 K and 12 K, respectively, and show an unusually large ratio of the Curie-Weiss temperature to the Neel temperature. In particular, Ca5Ir3O12, which includes both Ir4+ and Ir5+ ions, reveals that only S=1/2 spins of the Ir4+ ions are involved in the magnetic ordering whereas S=3/2 spins of the Ir5+ ions remain disordered. All results suggest the presence of the geometrical frustration that causes incomplete long-range AFM order in these quasi-one-dimensional compounds.

Magnetic anisotropy and geometrical frustration in the Ising spin-chain system Sr5Rh4O12

A structural and thermodynamic study of the newly synthesized single crystal Sr5Rh4O12 is reported. Sr5Rh4O12 consists of a triangular lattice of spin chains running along the c-axis. It is antiferromagnetically ordered below 23 K with the intrachain and interchain coupling being ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM), respectively. There is strong evidence for an Ising character in the interaction and geometrical frustration that causes incomplete long-range AFM order. The isothermal magnetization exhibits two step-like transitions leading to a ferrimagnetic state at 2.4 T and a FM state at 4.8 T, respectively. Sr5Rh4O12 is a unique frustrated spin-chain system ever found in 4d and 5d based materials without a presence of an incomplete 3d-electron shell.

Possible quantum criticality and coexistence of spontaneous ferromagnetism and field-induced metamagnetism in triple-layered Sr4Ru3O10

A thermodynamic and transport study of Sr4Ru3O10 as a function of temperature and magnetic field are presented. The central results include a growing specific heat C with increasing field B, a divergent magnetic contribution to C/T at low temperatures, an abrupt jump and a peak in C/T at 2.90 T and 7 T for B||ab-plane and B||c-axis, respectively, and corresponding changes in the low T power laws of the resistivity. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that the quantum fluctuations occur in a system that shows both intralayer metamagnetism and interlayer spontaneous ferromagnetism, a feature characteristically different from all other systems involving quantum criticality.

Borderline magnetism in Sr4Ru3O10: Impact of dilute La and Ca doping on itinerant ferromagnetism and metamagnetism

An investigation of La and Ca doped Sr4Ru3O10, featuring a coexistence of interlayer ferromagnetism and intralayer metamagnetism, is presented. La doping readily changes magnetism between ferromagnetism and metamagnetism by tuning the density of states. It also results in different Curie temperatures for the c-axis and the basal plane, highlighting a rare spin-orbit coupling with the crystal field states. In contrast, Ca doping enhances the c-axis ferromagnetism and the magnetic anisotropy. La doping also induces a dimensional crossover in the interlayer transport whereas Ca doping exhibits a tunneling magnetoresistance and an extraordinary T3/2-dependence of the resisitivity. The drastic changes caused by the dilute doping demonstrate a rare borderline magnetism that is delicately linked to the interplay of the density of states and spin-orbit coupling.

Observation of oscillatory magnetoresistance periodic in 1/B and B in Ca3Ru2O7

We report magnetoresistance oscillations in high magnetic fields, B, up to 45 T and over a wide range of temperature in the Mott-like system Ca3Ru2O7. For B rotating within the ac-plane, slow and strong Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations periodic in 1/B are observed for T≤1.5 K in the presence of metamagnetism. These oscillations are highly angular dependent and intimately correlated with the spin-polarization of the ferromagnetic state. For B||[110], oscillations are also observed but periodic in B (rather than 1/B) which persist up to 15 K. While the SdH oscillations are a manifestation of the presence of small Fermi surface (FS) pockets in the Mott-like system, the B-periodic oscillations, an exotic quantum phenomenon, may be a result of anomalous coupling of the magnetic field to the t2g-orbitals that makes the extremal cross-section of the FS field-dependent.

Colossal Magnetoresistance by Avoiding a Ferromagnetic State in the Mott System Ca3Ru2O7

Transport and magnetic studies of Ca3Ru2O7 for temperatures ranging from 0.4 K to 56 K and magnetic fields, B, up to 45 T leads to strikingly different behavior when the field is applied along the different crystal axes. A ferromagnetic (FM) state with full spin polarization is achieved for B||a-axis, but colossal magnetoresistance is realized only for B||b-axis. For B||c-axis, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed and followed by a less resistive state than for B||a. Hence, in contrast to standard colossal magnetoresistive materials, the FM phase is the least favorable for electron hopping. These properties together with highly unusual spin-charge-lattice coupling near the Mott transition (48 K) are driven by the orbital degrees of freedom.

Gradual transition from insulator to semimetal of Ca$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$B$_{6}$ with increasing Eu concentration

The local environment of Eu$^{2+}$ ($4f^{7}$, $S=7/2$) in Ca$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$B$_{6}$ ($0.003\leqslant x\leqslant 1.00$) is investigated by means of electron spin resonance (ESR). For $x\lesssim 0.003$ the spectra show resolved \textit{fine} and \textit{hyperfine} structures due to the cubic crystal \textit{electric} field and nuclear \textit{hyperfine} field, respectively. The resonances have Lorentzian line shape, indicating an \textit{insulating} environment for the Eu$^{2+}$ ions. For $0.003\lesssim x\lesssim 0.07$, as $x$ increases, the ESR lines broaden due to local distortions caused by the Eu/Ca ions substitution. For $0.07\lesssim x\lesssim 0.30$, the lines broaden further and the spectra gradually change from Lorentzian to Dysonian resonances, suggesting a coexistence of both \textit{insulating} and \textit{metallic} environments for the Eu$^{2+}$ ions. In contrast to Ca$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$, the \textit{fine} structure is still observable up to $x\approx 0.15$. For $x\gtrsim 0.30 $ the \textit{fine} and \textit{hyperfine} structures are no longer observed, the line width increases, and the line shape is purely Dysonian anticipating the \textit{semimetallic} character of EuB$_{6}$. This broadening is attributed to a spin-flip scattering relaxation process due to the exchange interaction between conduction and Eu$^{2+}$ $4f$ electrons. High field ESR measurements for $x\gtrsim 0.15$ reveal smaller and anisotropic line widths, which are attributed to magnetic polarons and Fermi surface effects, respectively.

Magnetic field-tuned quantum critical point in CeAuSb_2

Transport, magnetic and thermal properties at high magnetic fields (H) and low temperatures (T) of the heavy fermion compound CeAuSb_2 are reported. At H=0 this layered system exhibits antiferromagnetic order below T_N = 6 K. Applying B along the inter-plane direction, leads to a continuous suppression of T_N and a quantum critical point at H_c ~ 5.4 T. Although it exhibits Fermi liquid behavior within the Neel phase, in the paramagnetic state the fluctuations associated with H_c give rise to unconventional behavior in the resistivity (sub-linear in T) and to a TlnT dependence in the magnetic contribution to the specific heat. For H > H_c and low T the electrical resistivity exhibits an unusual T^3-dependence.

From itinerant ferromagnetism to insulating antiferromagnetism: A magnetic and transport study of single crystal SrRu1-xMnxO3

We report results of a magnetic and transport study of SrRu1-xMnxO3, i.e., Mn doped SrRuO3. The Mn doping drives the system from the itinerant ferromagnetic state (TC=165 K for x=0) through a quantum critical point at xc=0.39 to an insulating antiferromagnetic state. The onset of antiferromagnetism is abrupt with a Neel temperature increasing from 205 K for x=0.44 to 250 K for x=0.59. Accompanying this quantum phase transition is a drastic change in resistivity by as much as 8 orders of magnitude as a function of x at low temperatures. The critical composition xc=0.39 sharply separates the two distinct ground states, namely the ferromagnetic metal from the antiferromagnetic insulator.

Orbitally-driven Behavior: Mott Transition, Quantum Oscillations and Colossal Magnetoresistance in Bilayered Ca3Ru2O7

We report recent transport and thermodynamic experiments over a wide range of temperatures for the Mott-like system Ca3Ru2O7 at high magnetic fields, B, up to 30 T. This work reveals a rich and highly anisotropic phase diagram, where applying B along the a-, b-, and c-axis leads to vastly different behavior. A fully spin-polarized state via a first order metamagnetic transition is obtained for B||a, and colossal magnetoresistance is seen for B||b, and quantum oscillations in the resistivity are observed for B||c, respectively. The interplay of the lattice, orbital and spin degrees of freedom are believed to give rise to this strongly anisotropic behavior.

Magnetization and Magnetotransport of LnBaCo2O5.5 (Ln=Gd, Eu) Single Crystals

The magnetization, resistivity and magnetoresistance (MR) of single crystals of GdBaCo2O5.5 and EuBaCo2O5.5 are measured over a wide range of dc magnetic fields (up to 30 T) and temperature. In LnBaCo2O5.5 (Ln=Gd, Eu), the Co-ions are trivalent and can exist in three spin states, namely, the S=0 low spin state (LS), the S= 1 intermediate spin state (IS) and the S=2 high spin state (HS). We confirm that GdBaCo2O5.5 and EuBaCo2O5.5 have a metal-insulator transition accompanied by a spin-state transition at TMI >> 365 and 335 K, respectively. The data suggest an equal ratio of LS (S=0) and IS (S=1) Co3+ ions below TMI, with no indication of additional spin state transitions. The low field magnetization shows a transition to a highly anisotropic ferromagnetic phase at 270 K, followed by another magnetic transition to an antiferromagnetic phase at a slightly lower temperature. The magnetization data are suggestive of weak correlations between the Gd-spins but no clear signature of ordering is seen for T > 2 K. Significant anisotropy between the a-b plane and c axis was observed in magnetic and magnetotransport properties for both compounds. For GdBaCo2O5.5, the resistivity and MR data imply a strong correlation between the spin-order and charge carriers. For EuBaCo2O5.5, the magnetic phase diagram is very similar to its Gd counterpart, but the low-T MR with current flow in the ab plane is positive rather than negative as for Gd. The magnitude and the hysteresis of the MR for EuBaCo2O5.5 decrease with increasing temperature, and at higher T the MR changes sign and becomes negative. The difference in the behavior of both compounds may arise from a small valence admixture in the nonmagnetic Eu ions, i.e. a valence slightly less than 3+.

First order transition from correlated electron semiconductor to ferromagnetic metal in single crystalline FeSi1-xGex

The phase diagram of FeSi1-xGex, obtained from magnetic, thermal and transport measurements on single crystals, shows a first-order transition from a correlated electron semiconductor to a ferromagnetic metal at a critical concentration, x ~ 0.25. The gap of the insulating phase strongly decreases with x. The specific heat coefficient appears to track the density of states of a Kondo insulator. The phase diagram is consistent with a correlation induced insulator-metal transition in conjunction with disorder on the Si/Ge ligand site.

Intersite coupling effects in a Kondo lattice

The La dilution of the Kondo lattice CeCoIn_5 is studied. The scaling laws found for the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat reveal two well-separated energy scales, corresponding to the single impurity Kondo temperature T_K and an intersite spin-liquid temperature T^*. The Ce-dilute alloy has the expected Fermi liquid ground state, while the specific heat and resistivity in the dense Kondo regime exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior, which scales with T^*. These observations indicate that the screening of the magnetic moments in the lattice involves antiferromagnetic intersite correlations with a larger energy scale in comparison with the Kondo impurity case.

Exact Solution of Heisenberg-liquid models with long-range coupling

We present the exact solution of two Heisenberg-liquid models of particles with arbitrary spin $S$ interacting via a hyperbolic long-range potential. In one model the spin-spin coupling has the simple antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange form, while for the other model the interaction is of the ferromagnetic Babujian-Takhatajan type. It is found that the Bethe ansatz equations of these models have a similar structure to that of the Babujian-Takhatajan spin chain. We also conjecture the integrability of a third new spin-lattice model with long-range interaction.

Coqblin-Schrieffer impurity in a singular metal

A Coqblin-Schrieffer impurity of spin $S$ coupled to the boundary of an open SU(N)-invariant $t-J$ chain with $N = 2S+2$ is studied. The model is integrable as a function of one coupling parameter $v$ for arbitrary spin and band filling. The system is coupled to a reservoir of electrons and as a function of the chemical potential the host chain has a critical point corresponding to the van Hove singularity of the empty band of charges. In the neighborhood of this critical point we study the low temperature properties of the impurity as a function of $v$. For constant chemical potential we obtain two critical coupling values $v_1=-1/2$ and $v_2=0$ separating phases in which the impurity spin is completely compensated (Kondo effect), partially screened (undercompensated impurity) or decoupled from the chain (free spin). The partial compensation occurs as a consequence of a thermally {\it activated Kondo effect} in the region $v_1 < v < v_2$. The possible realization of such a {\it finite temperature Kondo effect} in narrow-gap semiconductors is discussed.
