Hyperfine Coherence in the Presence of Spontaneous Photon Scattering

The coherence of a hyperfine-state superposition of a trapped $^{9}$Be$^+$ ion in the presence of off-resonant light is experimentally studied. It is shown that Rayleigh elastic scattering of photons that does not change state populations also does not affect coherence. Coherence times exceeding the average scattering time of 19 photons are observed. This result implies that, with sufficient control over its parameters, laser light can be used to manipulate hyperfine-state superpositions with very little decoherence.

Nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory of a strongly correlated system

We present a generalized dynamical mean-field approach for the nonequilibrium physics of a strongly correlated system in the presence of a time-dependent external field. The Keldysh Green's function formalism is used to study the nonequilibrium problem. We derive a closed set of self-consistency equations in the case of a driving field with frequency Omega and wave vector q. We present numerical results for the local frequency-dependent Green's function and the self-energy for different values of the field amplitude in the case of a uniform external field using the iterated perturbation theory. In addition, an expression for the frequency-dependent optical conductivity of the Hubbard model with a driving external field is derived.

Measurement of the 1s-2s energy interval in muonium

The 1s-2s interval has been measured in the muonium ({$μ^+e^-$}) atom by Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy. The frequency separation of the states was determined to be 2 455 528 941.0(9.8) MHz in good agreement with quantum electrodynamics. The muon-electron mass ratio can be extracted and is found to be 206.768 38(17). The result may be interpreted as measurement of the muon-electron charge ratio as $-1- 1.1(2.1)\cdot 10^{-9}$.

The Phase Diagram of 2 flavour QCD with improved Actions

It has been proposed, that the chiral continuum limit of 2-flavour QCD with Wilson fermions is brought about by a phase in which flavour and parity symmetry are broken spontaneously at finite lattice spacing. At finite temperature this phase should retract from the weak coupling limit to form 5 cusps. This scenario is studied with tree level Symanzik improved actions for both gauge and fermion fields on lattices of size $8^3\times 4$ and $12^2\times 24\times 4$.

Passing through the `chiral limit' in quenched QCD with Wilson fermions

We investigate the limit of vanishing quark mass in quenched lattice QCD with unimproved Wilson fermions at $β=6.0$. Exploiting the correlations of propagators at different time slices we extract pion masses extremely close to the `chiral limit', despite the presence of `exceptional configurations'. With this at hand, the existence of quenched chiral logarithms can be demonstrated, provided, finite size effects are small. With reference to the phase diagram proposed by Aoki also the range $κ> κ_c$ is investigated. The width of a potential parity-flavor violating phase can, if at all, hardly be resolved.

Finite Temperature Phase Diagram of QCD with improved Wilson Fermions

We present results of an ongoing study of two flavour QCD with Wilson fermions at finite temperature. We have used tree level Symanzik improvement in both the gauge and fermion part of the action. The phase diagram was previously determined on an $8^3 \times 4$ lattice and the existence of Aoki's phase demonstrated. On our current lattice of $12^2 \times 24 \times 4$ we have extended the set of observables and studied chiral and thermal properties at light quark masses.

Hadron masses in qQCD with Wilson fermions near the chiral limit

In quenched lattice QCD with standard Wilson fermions the quark propagator is computed very close to the chiral limit in the zero-temperature case. Starting from our experience with lattice QED we employ a modified statistical method in order to estimate reliably hadron masses.

Finite Temperature Phase Diagramm of QCD with improved Wilson fermions

We present first results of a study of two flavour QCD with Wilson fermions at finite temperature. We have used tree level Symanzik improvement in both the gauge and fermion part of the action. In a first step we explore the phase diagramm on an $8^3 \times 4$ lattice, with particular emphasis on checking Aoki's conjecture with an improved action.
