Screening Effects in Superfluid Nuclear and Neutron Matter within Brueckner Theory

Effects of medium polarization are studied for $^1S_0$ pairing in neutron and nuclear matter. The screening potential is calculated in the RPA limit, suitably renormalized to cure the low density mechanical instability of nuclear matter. The selfenergy corrections are consistently included resulting in a strong depletion of the Fermi surface. All medium effects are calculated based on the Brueckner theory. The $^1S_0$ gap is determined from the generalized gap equation. The selfenergy corrections always lead to a quenching of the gap, which is enhanced by the screening effect of the pairing potential in neutron matter, whereas it is almost completely compensated by the antiscreening effect in nuclear matter.

Average ground-state energy of finite Fermi systems

Semiclassical theories like the Thomas-Fermi and Wigner-Kirkwood methods give a good description of the smooth average part of the total energy of a Fermi gas in some external potential when the chemical potential is varied. However, in systems with a fixed number of particles N, these methods overbind the actual average of the quantum energy as N is varied. We describe a theory that accounts for this effect. Numerical illustrations are discussed for fermions trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential and in a hard wall cavity, and for self-consistent calculations of atomic nuclei. In the latter case, the influence of deformations on the average behavior of the energy is also considered.

The Nuclear Scissors Mode from Various Aspects

Three methods to describe collective motion, Random Phase Approximation (RPA), Wigner Function Moments (WFM) and the Green's Function (GF) method are compared in detail and their physical content analyzed on an example of a simple model, the harmonic oscillator with quadrupole--quadrupole residual interaction. It is shown that they give identical formulae for eigenfrequencies and transition probabilities of all collective excitations of the model, including the scissors mode, which is the subject of our special attention. The exact relation between the RPA and WFM variables and the respective dynamical equations is established. The transformation of the RPA spectrum into the one of WFM is explained. The very close connection of the WFM method with the GF one is demonstrated. The normalization factor of the ``synthetic'' scissors state and its overlap with physical states are calculated analytically. The orthogonality of the spurious state to all physical states is proved rigorously. A differential equation describing the current lines of RPA modes is established and the current lines of the scissors mode analyzed as a superposition of rotational and irrotational components.

Thomas-Fermi theory for atomic nuclei revisited

The recently developed semiclassical variational Wigner-Kirkwood (VWK) approach is applied to finite nuclei using external potentials and self-consistent mean fields derived from Skyrme interactions and from relativistic mean field theory. VWK consists of the Thomas-Fermi part plus a pure, perturbative hbar^2 correction. In external potentials, VWK passes through the average of the quantal values of the accumulated level density and total energy as a function of the Fermi energy. However, there is a problem of overbinding when the energy per particle is displayed as a function of the particle number. The situation is analyzed comparing spherical and deformed harmonic oscillator potentials. In the self-consistent case, we show for Skyrme forces that VWK binding energies are very close to those obtained from extended Thomas-Fermi functionals of hbar^4 order, pointing to the rapid convergence of the VWK theory. This satisfying result, however, does not cure the overbinding problem, i.e., the semiclassical energies show more binding than they should. This feature is more pronounced in the case of Skyrme forces than with the relativistic mean field approach. However, even in the latter case the shell correction energy for e.g. 208Pb turns out to be only -6 MeV what is about a factor two or three off the generally accepted value. As an ad hoc remedy, increasing the kinetic energy by 2.5%, leads to shell correction energies well acceptable throughout the periodic table. The general importance of the present studies for other finite Fermi systems, self-bound or in external potentials, is pointed out.

Inelastic form factors to alpha particle condensate states in 12C and 16O: what can we learn ?

In order to discuss the spatial extention of the second 0+ state of 12C (Hoyle state), we analyze the inelastic form factor of electron scattering to the Hoyle state, which our 3 alpha condensate wave function reproduces very well like previous 3 alpha RGM/GCM models. The analysis is made by varying the size of the Hoyle state artificially. As a result, we find that only the maximum value of the form factor sensitively depends on its size, while the positions of maximum and minimum are almost unchanged. This size dependence is found to come from a characteristic feature of the transition density from the ground state to the Hoyle state. We further show the theoretical predictions of the inelastic form factor to the second 2+ state of 12C, which was recently observed above the Hoyle state, and of the inelastic form factor to the calculated third 0+ state of 16O, which was conjectured to correspond to the 4 alpha condensed state in previous theoretical work by the present authors.

Boson-Fermion pairing in a Boson-Fermion environment

Propagation of a Boson-Fermion (B-F) pair in a B-F environment is considered. The possibility of formation of stable strongly correlated B-F pairs, embedded in the continuum, is pointed out. The new Fermi gas of correlated B-F pairs shows a strongly modified Fermi surface. The interaction between like particles is neglected in this exploratory study. Various physical situations where our new pairing mechanism could be of importance are invoked.

Pairing Matrix Elements and Pairing Gaps with Bare, Effective and Induced Interactions

The dependence on the single-particle states of the pairing matrix elements of the Gogny force and of the bare low-momentum nucleon-nucleon potential $v_{low-k}$ is studied in the semiclassical approximation for the case of a typical finite, superfluid nucleus ($^{120}$Sn). It is found that the matrix elements of $v_{low-k}$ follow closely those of $v_{Gogny}$ on a wide range of energy values around the Fermi energy $e_F$, those associated with $v_{low-k}$ being less attractive. This result explains the fact that around $e_F$ the pairing gap $Δ_{Gogny}$ associated with the Gogny interaction (and with a density of single-particle levels corresponding to an effective $k$-mass $m_k\approx 0.7 m$) is a factor of about 2 larger than $Δ_{low-k}$,being in agreement with $Δ_{exp}$= 1.4 MeV. The exchange of low-lying collective surface vibrations among pairs of nucleons moving in time-reversal states gives rise to an induced pairing interaction $v_{ind}$ peaked at $e_F$. The interaction $(v_{low-k}+ v_{ind})Z_ω$ arising from the renormalization of the bare nucleon-nucleon potential and of the single-particle motion ($ω-$mass and quasiparticle strength $Z_ω$) due to the particle-vibration coupling leads to a value of the pairing gap at the Fermi energy $Δ_{ren}$ which accounts for the experimental value.

The nuclear scissors mode within two approaches (Wigner function moments versus RPA)

Two complementary methods to describe the collective motion, RPA and Wigner function moments method, are compared on an example of a simple model - harmonic oscillator with quadrupole-quadrupole residual interaction. It is shown that they give identical formulae for eigenfrequencies and transition probabilities of all collective excitations of the model including the scissors mode, which here is the subject of our special attention. The exact relation between the variables of the two methods and the respective dynamical equations is established. The normalization factor of the "synthetic" scissors state and its overlap with physical states are calculated analytically. The orthogonality of the spurious state to all physical states is proved rigorously.

Nuclear Pairing: Surface or Bulk ?

We analyse how the spatial localisation properties of pairing correlations are changing in a major neutron shell of heavy nuclei. It is shown that the radial distribution of the pairing density depends strongly on whether the chemical potential is close to a low or a high angular momentum level and has very little sensitivity to whether the pairing force acts in the surface or in the bulk. The averaged pairing density over one major shell is however rather flat, practically independent of the pairing force. Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for the isotopic chain $^{100-132}$Sn are presented for demonstration purposes.

Resonance states in 12C and alpha-particle condensation

The states with $J^π=0^+$, $2^+$, and $4^+$ of $^{12}$C with excitation energies less than about 15 MeV are investigated with the alpha condensate wave function with spatial deformation and by using the method of ACCC (analytic continuation in the coupling constant) which is necessary for a proper treatment of resonance states. The calculated energy and width of the recently observed $2_2^+$ state are found to be well reproduced. The obtained $2_2^+$ wave function has a large overlap with a single condensate wave function of $3α$ gas-like structure. The density distribution is shown to be almost the same as that of the $0_2^+$ state that is regarded as a $3α$ Bose-condensed state, if the energy of the $2_2^+$ state is scaled down to the same value as the one of the $0_2^+$ state. Furthermore, the kinetic energy, nuclear interaction energy, and Coulomb interaction energy of the calculated $2_2^+$ state are shown to be very similar to those of the $0_2^+$ state. We conclude that the $2_2^+$ state has a structure similar to the $0_2^+$ state of Bose-condensate character with a dilute $3α$ gas-like structure. In addition the resonance states, $0_3^+$, $0_4^+$, $4_2^+$, are also discussed.

Dynamics of few-body states in a medium

Strongly interacting matter such as nuclear or quark matter leads to few-body bound states and correlations of the constituents. As a consequence quantum chromodynamics has a rich phase structure with spontaneous symmetry breaking, superconductivity, condensates of different kinds. All this appears in many astrophysical scenarios. Among them is the formation of hadrns during the early stage of the Universe, the structure of a neutron star, the formation of nuclei during a supernova explosion. Some of these extreme conditions can be simulated in heavy ion colliders. To treat such a hot and dense system we use the Green function formalism of many-body theory. It turns out that a systematic Dyson expansion of the Green functions leads to modified few-body equations that are capable to describe phase transitions, condensates, cluster formation and more. These equations include self energy corrections and Pauli blocking. We apply this method to nonrelativistic and relativistic matter. The latter one is treated on the light front. Because of the medium and the inevitable truncation of space, the few-body dynamics and states depend on the thermodynamic parameters of the medium.

Extended RPA with ground-state correlations in a solvable model

The ground states and excited states of the Lipkin model hamiltonian are calculated using a new theoretical approach which has been derived from an extended time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory known as the time-dependent density-matrix theory (TDDM). TDDM enables us to calculate correlated ground states, and its small amplitude limit (STDDM), which is a version of extended RPA theories based on a correlated ground state, can be used to calculate excited states. It is found that this TDDM plus STDDM approach gives much better results for both the ground states and the excited states than the Hartree-Fock ground state plus RPA approach.

Atomic Bose-Fermi mixed condensates with Boson-Fermion quasi-bound cluster states

The boson-fermion atomic bound states (composite fermion) and their roles for the phase structures are studied in a bose-fermi mixed condensate of atomic gas in finite temperature and density. The two-body scattering equation is formulated for a boson-fermion pair in the mixed condensate with the Yamaguchi-type potential. By solving the equation, we evaluate the binding energy of a composite fermion, and show that it has small T-dependence in the physical region, because of the cancellation of the boson- and fermion- statistical factors in the equation. We also calculate the phase structure of the BF mixed condensate under the equilibrium B+F -> BF, and discuss the role of the composite fermions: the competitions between the degenerate state of the composite fermions and the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of isolated bosons. The criterion for the BEC realization is obtained from the algebraically-derived phase diagrams at T=0.

Self Consistent Random Phase Approximation and the restoration of symmetries within the three-level Lipkin model

We show that it is possible to restore the symmetry associated with the Goldstone mode within the Self Consistent Random Phase Approximation (SCRPA) applied to the three-level Lipkin model. We determine one and two-body densities as very convergent expansions in terms of the generators of the RPA basis. We show that SCRPA excitations correspond to the heads of some rotational bands in the exact spectrum. It turns out that the SCRPA eigenmodes for N=2 coincide with exact solutions, given by the diagonalisation procedure.

Low densities in nuclear and neutron matters and in the nuclear surface

Nuclear and neutron matters are investigated in the low density region, well below the nuclear saturation density. Microscopic calculations, based on the Bethe-Brueckner approach with a few realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials, are compared with the predictions of a set of phenomenological effective interactions, mostly employed in nuclear structure studies. An energy functional is constructed on the basis of the microscopic bulk EoS and applied to a selection of nuclei throughout the mass table. The results provide a microscopic basis for a link between nuclear surface behaviour and neutron EoS previously observed with phenomenological effective forces. Possible effects of pairing on asymmetric nuclear matter are also analyzed in detail. The results are expected to illuminate the physical mechanisms which determine the behaviour of the surface density tail in exotic nuclei.

Extended RPA with ground-state correlations

We propose a time-independent method for finding a correlated ground state of an extended time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory, known as the time-dependent density-matrix theory (TDDM). The correlated ground state is used to formulate the small amplitude limit of TDDM (STDDM) which is a version of extended RPA theories with ground-state correlations. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method, we calculate the ground state of 22O and study the first 2+ state and its two-phonon states using STDDM.

Light clusters in nuclear matter of finite temperature

We investigate properties and the distribution of light nuclei (A<4) in symmetric nuclear matter of finite temperature within a microscopic framework. For this purpose we have solved few-body Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas type equations for quasi-nucleons that include self-energy corrections and Pauli blocking in a systematic way. In a statistical model we find a significant influence in the composition of nuclear matter if medium effects are included in the microscopic calculation of nuclei. If multiplicities are frozen out at a certain time (or volume), we expect significant consequences for the formation of light fragments in a heavy ion collision. As a consequence of the systematic inclusion of medium effects the ordering of multiplicities becomes opposite to the law of mass action of ideal components. This is necessary to explain the large abundance of $α$-particles in a heavy ion collision that are otherwise largely suppressed in an ideal equilibrium scenario.

Spin degrees of freedom and flattening of the spectra of single-particle excitations in strongly correlated Fermi systems

The impact of long-range spin-spin correlations on the structure of a flat portion in single-particle spectra $ξ(p)$, which emerges beyond the point, where the Landau state loses its stability, is studied. We supplement the well-known Nozieres model of a Fermi system with limited scalar long-range forces by a similar long-range spin-dependent term and calculate the spectra versus its strength $g$. It is found that Nozieres results hold as long as $g>0$. However, with $g$ changing its sign, the spontaneous magnetization is shown to arise at any nonzero $g$. The increase of the strength $|g|$ is demonstrated to result in shrinkage of the domain in momentum space, occupied by the flat portion of $ξ(p)$, and, eventually, in its vanishing.
