Resistivity of Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si single crystals: Evidence for quantum critical behavior

Resistivity measurements have been made on Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si single crystals between 2 and 300K for $x$ = 0, 0.05, 0.08, 0.12 and 0.15. Fe doping is found to depress the magnetic ordering temperature from 30K for $x$ = 0 to below 2K for $x$ = 0.15. Although Fe doping results in a large increase of the low-temperature residual resistivity, the temperature dependence of the resistivity above the magnetic transition remains practically unaffected by increasing Fe content. An analysis of the temperature derivative of the resistivity provides strong evidence for the existence of a non-Fermi-liquid ground state near $x$ = 0.15 and thus for a quantum critical point tuned by Fe content.

Importance of In-Plane Anisotropy in the Quasi Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnet BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$

The phase diagram of the quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is studied by specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and magnetization for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to $\mathbf{c}$. At $μ_0H^{*}\simeq1.5$ T, a crossover to a high-field state, where $T_N(H)$ increases linearly, arises from a competition of intrinsic and field-induced in-plane anisotropies. The pressure dependences of $T_N$ and $H^{*}$ are interpreted using the picture of a pressure-induced in-plane anisotropy. Even at zero field and ambient pressure, in-plane anisotropy cannot be neglected, which implies deviations from pure Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior.

Thermal expansion of the quasi two-dimensional magnetic layered compound BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ under magnetic fields along c-axis

The quasi two-dimensional magnetic BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is studied by using high-resolution thermal expansion in magnetic fields up to 10 T applied along the c-axis. A slight increase of about 1 % of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_N$ is observed at 10 T. Positive and negative pressure dependencies of $T_N$, respectively, are inferred from the thermal expansion $α(T)$ for pressures applied along the $a$- and $c$-axes.

LiBC - A prevented superconductor

We have investigated the lattice dynamics of LiBC. Experimental Raman and inelastic neutron scattering results are confronted with density functional calculations. The excellent agreement between experiment and theory indicates that we have attained a high level of understanding for LiBC, which by its structure is closely related to superconducting MgB2 We will show that annealing of the sample is insufficient to cause Li deficiency and thus produce the expected superconductivity.

Excitation spectrum of hydrogen adsorbed to carbon nanotubes

We have studied the microscopic dynamics of hydrogen adsorbed to bundles of single walled carbon nanotubes using inelastic neutron scattering. Evidence is obtained for much higher storage capacities in chemically treated compared to as prepared material. This indicates an additional adsorption layer inside the tubes. Well pronounced excitations in the H2 spectrum at low energies confirm this conclusion. The desorption of hydrogen is monitored in real time as a function of temperature. Hydrogen storage is highly stable below 150 K in agreement with the harmonic evolution of the hydrogen spectrum, which indicates a strong binding potential. Above 200 K hydrogen can be released in a controlled way by simple heating. The excitation spectrum changes significantly during the release. Remnants of hydrogen persist up to 400 K.

Electronic structure of single-crystalline Mg(x)Al(1-x)B(2)

Polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the B 1s edge of single-crystalline Mg(x)Al(1-x)B(2) reveals a strongly anisotropic electronic structure near the Fermi energy. Comparing spectra for superconducting compounds (x=0.9, 1.0) with those for the non-superconductor x=0.0 gives direct evidence on the importance of an in-plane spectral feature crossing E_F for the superconducting properties of the diborides. Good agreement is found with the projected B 2p density of states from LDA band structure calculations.

The oxygen isotope effect in the ab-plane reflectance of underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}

We have measured the effect of oxygen isotope substitution on the ab-plane reflectance of underdoped YBCO. The frequency shift of the transverse optic phonons due to the substitution of O-16 by O-18 yields an isotope effect of the expected magnitude for copper-oxygen stretching modes with alpha=0.5 +- 0.1. The reflectance shoulder at 400 - 500 cm^-1 shows a much smaller exponent of alpha=0.1 +- 0.1 in the normal state and alpha=0.23+- 0.1 in the superconducting state. These observations suggest that the shoulder is of electronic origin and not due to a phonon mode as has been suggested recently.

Pressure Effect and Specific Heat of RBa2Cu3Ox at Distinct Charge Carrier Concentrations: Possible Influence of Stripes

In YBa2Cu3Ox, distinct features are found in the pressure dependence of the transition temperature, dTc/dp, and in DeltaCp*Tc, where DeltaCp is the jump in the specific heat at Tc: dTc/dp becomes zero when DeltaCp*Tc is maximal, whereas dTc/dp has a peak at lower oxygen contents where DeltaCp*Tc vanishes. Substituting Nd for Y and doping with Ca leads to a shift of these specific oxygen contents, since oxygen order and hole doping by Ca influences the hole content nh in the CuO2 planes. Calculating nh from the parabolic Tc(nh) behavior, the features coalesce for all samples at nh=0.11 and nh=0.175, irrespective of substitution and doping. Hence, this behavior seems to reflect an intrinsic property of the CuO2 planes. Analyzing our results we obtain different mechanisms in three doping regions: Tc changes in the optimally doped and overdoped region are mainly caused by charge transfer. In the slightly underdoped region an increasing contribution to dTc/dp is obtained when well ordered CuO chain fragments serve as pinning centers for stripes. This behavior is supported by our results on Zn doped NdBa2Cu3Ox and is responsible for the well known dTc/dp peak observed in YBa2Cu3Ox at x=6.7. Going to a hole content below nh=0.11 our results point to a crossover from an underdoped superconductor to a doped antiferromagnet, changing completely the physics of these materials.

The Effects of Chemical Doping and Hydrostatic Pressure on Tc of Y(1-y)CayBa2Cu3Ox and NdBa2Cu3Ox Single Crystals

We studied Tc of YBa2Cu3Ox (Y123), Y0.89Ca0.11Ba2Cu3Ox (YCa123) and NdBa2Cu3Ox (Nd123) single crystals with various oxygen contents x. Compared to Tc(x) of Y123 the Tc(x) curves of YCa123 are shifted to lower oxygen contents and the maximum transition temperature Tc,max decreases with increasing Ca content whereas in Nd123 Tc(x) is shifted to higher oxygen contents and Tc,max is increased. According to the universal parabolic Tc(nh) behavior the differences in Tc(x)of Y123, YCa123 and Nd123 can be ascribed to different hole concentrations nh in the CuO2 planes caused by doping via changes in chemistry or structure. In order to study the influence of structural changes on Tc we examined the hydrostatic pressure effect dTc/dp (p up to 0.6 GPa). In the underdoped region, at nh=0.11, the examined compounds show a peak in dTc/dp which is very pronounced for systems with well ordered CuO chains. As this peak occurs at the same nh in all investigated systems it is not caused by oxygen ordering, but its origins might be found in a strong influence of lattice deformations on the electronic structure.

Compressibility and thermal expansion of YBa2Cu3Ox

The linear compressibilities and the thermal expansion of an untwinned, nearly optimal doped YBa2Cu3O6.94 single crystal were measured along the three crystallographic axes with a high-resolution dilatometer mounted in a high-pressure cell. The measurements were performed in a temperature range from 50 K to 320 K under hydrostatic gas pressure of maximal 0.65 GPa. At a temperature of 300 K the measured bulk modulus is reduced and shows a very strong enhancement under increasing pressure due to pressure-induced oxygen ordering. This ordering process can also be related to a glass transition seen in the thermal expansion above 225 K. At lower temperatures, when oxygen ordering is frozen, the bulk modulus is increased and shows a significantly reduced enhancement under pressure. This pressure dependence, however, is still anomalous high, probably caused by bonds of extremely different compressibilities within the unit cell. The widely spread literature data of the bulk modulus can be explained by this high pressure dependence.

Calorimetric Investigation of NdBa2Cu3Ox Single Crystals

The specific heat of Nd(Y)Ba2Cu3Ox single crystals without substitution of Nd for Ba has been measured for various oxygen contents. In comparison with YBa2Cu3Ox, the maximum attainable transition temperature of the crystals is about 4 K higher and shifted from x = 6.92 to x = 7.0, the highest possible oxygen content. In spite of the difference in the Tc(x) dependences, the jump in the specific heat DeltaC/Tc in both systems increases continuously being maximum at x = 7.0. Bond valence sum calculations based on neutron diffraction data point to a retarded generation of holes with increasing oxygen content in the Nd system and a different hole distribution between the chains and the planes in comparison to YBa2Cu3Ox accounting for the different behaviour of both systems.

The Effect of Chemical Doping and Hydrostatic Pressure on Tc of Y1-yCayBa2Cu3Ox Single Crystals

We performed susceptibility measurements on Y1-yCayBa2Cu3Ox single crystals under high He pressure. For each Ca content various samples with different oxygen contents have been prepared to probe the influence of Ca on Tc(x), dTc/dp(x) and Tc,max. Starting from the parabolic Tc(nh) behavior we calculated nh values from Tc and Tc,max for each sample. It is shown that in the overdoped region dTc/dp can be described by a pressure induced charge transfer with dnh/dp = 3.7E-3 [1/GPa] and a dTc,max/dp value of 0.8 K/GPa, irrespective of the Ca content. In the underdoped region additional pressure effects lead to a peak in dTc/dp at approximately 0.11 holes/CuO2 plane. However, with increasing Ca content this peak is strongly depressed. This is explained in terms of an increasing disorder in the CuO chain system due to doping. Deviations in dTc/dp at very low nh values can be assigned to the ortho II ordering in the CuO chain system.

In-Plane and Out-of-Plane Optical Properties of NdBa2Cu3Ox Single Crystals close to x = 7.0

We present results of reflectivity measurements with E parallel to c and E perpendicular to c on NdBa2Cu3Ox (Nd123) single crystals close to full oxygen doping. Along the c-axis the optical conductivity shows a well developed absorption band around 450 cm^-1 at all temperatures. The in-plane optical properties are dominated by crystal-field excitations at low energies, a prominent step at 400 cm^-1 and a weaker feature between 500 - 550 cm^-1. A comparison of the c-axis optical conductivity and the in-plane scattering rate with neutron scattering derived spin susceptibility spectra suggests that the in-plane and out-of-plane anomalies are caused by the same mechanism, probably electron--spin scattering.
