Force Plate Monitoring of Human Hemodynamics

We show that the recoils of the body caused by cardiac motion and blood circulation provide a noninvasive method capable to display the motions of the heart muscle and the propagation of the pulse wave along aorta and its branches. The results are compared with the data obtained invasively during a heart catheterization. We show that the described noninvasive method is able to determine the moment of a particular heart movement or the time when the pulse wave reaches certain morphological structure.

Headway statistics of public transport in Mexican cities

We present a cellular automaton simulating the behavior of public bus transport in several Mexican cities. The headway statistics obtained from the model is compared to the measured time intervals between subsequent bus arrivals to a given bus stop and to a spacing distribution resulting from a random matrix theory.

Conductance of Open Quantum Billiards and Classical Trajectories

We analyse the transport phenomena of 2D quantum billiards with convex boundary of different shape. The quantum mechanical analysis is performed by means of the poles of the S-matrix while the classical analysis is based on the motion of a free particle inside the cavity along trajectories with a different number of bounces at the boundary. The value of the conductance depends on the manner the leads are attached to the cavity. The Fourier transform of the transmission amplitudes is compared with the length of the classical paths. There is good agreement between classical and quantum mechanical results when the conductance is achieved mainly by special short-lived states such as whispering gallery modes (WGM) and bouncing ball modes (BBM). In these cases, also the localization of the wave functions agrees with the picture of the classical paths. The S-matrix is calculated classically and compared with the transmission coefficients of the quantum mechanical calculations for five modes in each lead. The number of modes coupled to the special states is effectively reduced.

Whispering gallery modes in open quantum billiards

The poles of the S-matrix and the wave functions of open 2D quantum billiards with convex boundary of different shape are calculated by the method of complex scaling. Two leads are attached to the cavities. The conductance of the cavities is calculated at energies with one, two and three open channels in each lead. Bands of overlapping resonance states appear which are localized along the convex boundary of the cavities and contribute coherently to the conductance. These bands correspond to the whispering gallery modes appearing in the classical calculations.

Comment on "Models of Intermediate Spectral Statistics"

In [1] it was proposed, that the nearest-neighbor distribution $P(s)$ of the spectrum of the Bohr-Mottelson model is similar to the semi-Poisson distribution. We show however, that $P(s)$ of this model differs considerably in many aspects from semi-Poisson. In addition we give an asymptotic formula for $P(s)$ as $s \to 0$, which gives $P'(0) = π\sqrt{3}/2$ for the slope at $s=0$. This is different not only from the GOE case but also from the semi-Poisson prediction that leads to $P'(0) = 4$

Two-component model of a spin-polarized transport

Effect of the spin-involved interaction of electrons with impurity atoms or defects to the transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas is described by using a simplifying two-component model. Components representing spin-up and spin-down states are supposed to be coupled at a discrete set of points within a conduction channel. The used limit of the short-range interaction allows to solve the relevant scattering problem exactly. By varying the model parameters different transport regimes of two-terminal devices with ferromagnetic contacts can be described. In a quasi-ballistic regime the resulting difference between conductances for the parallel and antiparallel orientation of the contact magnetization changes its sign as a function of the length of the conduction channel if appropriate model parameters are chosen. The effect is in agreement with recent experimental observations.

Spectroscopic studies in open quantum systems

The spectroscopic properties of an open quantum system are determined by the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of an effective Hamiltonian H consisting of the Hamiltonian H_0 of the corresponding closed system and a non-Hermitian correction term W arising from the interaction via the continuum of decay channels. The eigenvalues E_R of H are complex. They are the poles of the S-matrix and provide both the energies and widths of the states. We illustrate the interplay between Re(H) and Im(H) by means of the different interference phenomena between two neighboured resonance states. Level repulsion along the real axis appears if the interaction is caused mainly by Re(H) while a bifurcation of the widths appears if the interaction occurs mainly due to Im(H). We then calculate the poles of the S-matrix and the corresponding wavefunctions for a rectangular microwave resonator with a scatter as a function of the area of the resonator as well as of the degree of opening to a guide. The calculations are performed by using the method of exterior complex scaling. Re(W) and Im(W) cause changes in the structure of the wavefunctions which are permanent, as a rule. At full opening to the lead, short-lived collective states are formed together with long-lived trapped states. The wavefunctions of the short-lived states at full opening to the lead are very different from those at small opening. The resonance picture obtained from the microwave resonator shows all the characteristic features known from the study of many-body systems in spite of the absence of two-body forces. The poles of the S-matrix determine the conductance of the resonator. Effects arising from the interplay between resonance trapping and level repulsion along the real axis are not involved in the statistical theory.

Interfering resonances in a quantum billiard

We present a method for numerically obtaining the positions, widths and wavefunctions of resonance states in a two dimensional billiard connected to a waveguide. For a rectangular billiard, we study the dynamics of three resonance poles lying separated from the other ones. As a function of increasing coupling strength between the waveguide and the billiard two of the states become trapped while the width of the third one continues to increase for all coupling strengths. This behavior of the resonance poles is reflected in the time delay function which can be studied experimentally.

Topologically induced vortex magnetance of a quantum device

We consider resonant vortices around nodal points of the wavefunction in electron transport through a mesoscopic device. With a suitable choice of the device geometry, the dominating role is played by single vortices of a preferred orientation. To characterize strength of the resulting magnetic moment we have introduced a magnetance, the quantity defined in analogy with the device conductance. Its basic properties and possible experimental detection are discussed.

Distribution of the wave function inside chaotic partially open systems

We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the distribution of the wavefunction inside a partially open chaotic timereversal symmetric system displays significant deviations from the Porter Thomas distribution. We give arguments which show that this distribution resembles the distribution which is expected to be found in closed chaotic systems with broken time reversal symmetry.
