Spinodal decomposition: An alternate mechanism of phase conversion

The scenario of homogeneous nucleation is investigated for a first order quark-hadron phase transition in a rapidly expanding background of quark gluon plasma. It is found that significant supercooling is possible before hadronization begins. This study also suggests that spinodal decomposition competes with nucleation and may provide an alternative mechanism for phase conversion.

Non-perturbative effects in a rapidly expanding quark-gluon plasma

Within first-order phase transitions, we investigate the pre-transitional effects due to the nonperturbative, large-amplitude thermal fluctuations which can promote phase mixing before the critical temperature is reached from above. In contrast with the cosmological quark-hadron transition, we find that the rapid cooling typical of the RHIC and LHC experiments and the fact that the quark-gluon plasma is chemically unsaturated suppress the role of non-perturbative effects at current collider energies. Significant supercooling is possible in a (nearly) homogeneous state of quark gluon plasma.

Glauber model for heavy ion collisions from low energies to high energies

The Glauber model is extensively applied to heavy ion collision for describing a number of interaction processes over a wide range of energies from near the Coulomb barrier to higher energies. The model gives the nucleus-nucleus interaction in terms of interaction between the constituent nucleons with a given density distribution. The model is a semiclassical model picturing the nuclear collision in the impact parameter representation where the nuclei move along the collision direction in a straight path. In these lectures we derive this model and discuss its applications in variety of problems in nuclear and high energy physics.

Nucleation versus Spinodal decomposition in a first order quark hadron phase transition

We investigate the scenario of homogeneous nucleation for a first order quark-hadron phase transition in a rapidly expanding background of quark gluon plasma. Using an improved preexponential factor for homogeneous nucleation rate, we solve a set of coupled equations to study the hadronization and the hydrodynamical evolution of the matter. It is found that significant supercooling is possible before hadronization begins. This study also suggests that spinodal decomposition competes with nucleation and may provide an alternative mechanism for phase conversion particularly if the transition is strong enough and the medium is nonviscous. For weak enough transition, the phase conversion may still proceed via homogeneous nucleation.

Persistence in One-dimensional Ising Models with Parallel Dynamics

We study persistence in one-dimensional ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor Ising models with parallel dynamics. The probability P(t) that a given spin has not flipped up to time t, when the system evolves from an initial random configuration, decays as P(t) \sim 1/t^theta_p with theta_p \simeq 0.75 numerically. A mapping to the dynamics of two decoupled A+A \to 0 models yields theta_p = 3/4 exactly. A finite size scaling analysis clarifies the nature of dynamical scaling in the distribution of persistent sites obtained under this dynamics.

Dynamical growth of the hadron bubbles during the quark-hadron phase transition

The rate of dynamical growth of the hadron bubbles in a supercooled baryon free quark-gluon plasma, is evaluated by solving the equations of relativistic fluid dynamics in all regions. For a non-viscous plasma, this dynamical growth rate is found to depend only on the range of correlation $ξ$ of order parameter fluctuation, and the radius $R$ of the critical hadron bubble, the two length scales relevant for the description of the critical phenomena. Further, it is shown that the dynamical prefactor acquires an additive component when the medium becomes viscous. Interestingly, under certain reasonable assumption for the velocity of the sound in the medium around the saddle configuration, the viscous and the non-viscous parts of the prefactor are found to be similar to the results obtained by Csernai-Kapusta and Ruggeri-Friedman (for the case of zero viscosity) respectively.

Inhomogeneous nucleation in quark hadron phase transition

The effect of subcritical hadron bubbles on a first-order quark-hadron phase transition is studied. These subcritical hadron bubbles are created due to thermal fluctuations, and can introduce a finite amount of phase mixing (quark phase mixed with hadron phase) even at and above the critical temperature. For reasonable choices of surface tension and correlation length, as obtained from the lattice QCD calculations, we show that the amount of phase mixing at the critical temperature remains below the percolation threshold. Thus, as the system cools below the critical temperature, the transition proceeds through the nucleation of critical-size hadron bubbles from a metastable quark-gluon phase (QGP), within an inhomogeneous background populated by an equilibrium distribution of subcritical hadron bubbles. The inhomogeneity of the medium results in a substantial reduction of the nucleation barrier for critical bubbles. Using the corrected nucleation barrier, we estimate the amount of supercooling for different parameters controlling the phase transition, and briefly discuss its implications to cosmology and heavy-ion collisions.

Supercooling in viscous hydrodynamics for QCD phase transition

First order quark hadron phase transition is considered in scaling hydrodynamics including the Csernai-Kapusta model of nucleation of hadronic bubbles leading to supercooling. The effect of viscosity on the entropy production is studied in ideal as well as in viscous hydrodynamics with and without supercooling. It is found that the excess entropy produced due to supercooling depends weakly on viscosity.

phi-Meson Mass Modification in Heavy-Ion Collisions

We recently presented a method of analyzing invariant-mass spectra of kaon pairs resulting from decay of $ϕ$ mesons produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. It can be used to extract the shifts in the mass and the width ($ΔM$ and $ΔΓ$) of the $ϕ$ mesons when they are inside the dense matter formed in these collisions. We have now performed a Monte-Carlo simulation of this process. We illustrate our method with the help of available preliminary data. Extracted value of $ΔM$ is significantly larger than that obtained with an earlier method. Our results are consistent with the experimentally observed $p_T$ dependence of the mass shift.
