Finite groups with a soluble group of coprime automorphisms whose fixed points have bounded Engel sinks

Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits a soluble group of coprime automorphisms $A$. We prove that if, for some positive integer $m$, every element of the centralizer $C_G(A )$ has a left Engel sink of cardinality at most $m$ (or a right Engel sink of cardinality at most $m$), then $G$ has a subgroup of $(|A|,m)$-bounded index which has Fitting height at most $2α(A)+2$, where $α(A)$ is the composition length of $A$. We also prove that if, for some positive integer $r$, every element of the centralizer $C_G(A )$ has a left Engel sink of rank at most $r$ (or a right Engel sink of rank at most $r$), then $G$ has a subgroup of $(|A|,r)$-bounded index which has Fitting height at most $4^{α(A)}+4α(A)+3$. Here, a left Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr E}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ belong to ${\mathscr E}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is a left Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr E}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) A right Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr R}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]$ belong to ${\mathscr R}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr R}(g)=\{ 1\}$.)

Strong conciseness of Engel words in profinite groups

A group word $w$ is said to be strongly concise in a class $\mathscr C$ of profinite groups if, for any group $G$ in $\mathscr C$, either $w$ takes at least continuum values in $G$ or the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ is finite. It is conjectured that all words are strongly concise in the class of all profinite groups. Earlier Detomi, Klopsch, and Shumyatsky proved this conjecture for multilinear commutator words, as well as for some other particular words. They also proved that every group word is strongly concise in the class of nilpotent profinite groups. In the present paper we prove that for any $n$ the $n$-Engel word $[...[x,y],y],\dots y]$ (where $y$ is repeated $n$ times) is strongly concise in the class of finitely generated profinite groups.

Profinite groups with an automorphism of prime order whose fixed points have finite Engel sinks

A right Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr R}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]$ belong to ${\mathscr R}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr R}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) We prove that if a profinite group $G$ admits a coprime automorphism $φ$ of prime order such that every fixed point of $φ$ has a finite right Engel sink, then $G$ has an open locally nilpotent subgroup. A left Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr E}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ belong to ${\mathscr E}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is a left Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr E}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) We prove that if a profinite group $G$ admits a coprime automorphism $φ$ of prime order such that every fixed point of $φ$ has a finite left Engel sink, then $G$ has an open pronilpotent-by-nilpotent subgroup.

On finite groups with an automorphism of prime order whose fixed points have bounded Engel sinks

A left Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr E}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ belong to ${\mathscr E}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is a left Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr E}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) We prove that if a finite group $G$ admits an automorphism $φ$ of prime order coprime to $|G|$ such that for some positive integer $m$ every element of the centralizer $C_G(φ)$ has a left Engel sink of cardinality at most $m$, then the index of the second Fitting subgroup $F_2(G)$ is bounded in terms of $m$. A right Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr R}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]$ belong to ${\mathscr R}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr R}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) We prove that if a finite group $G$ admits an automorphism $φ$ of prime order coprime to $|G|$ such that for some positive integer $m$ every element of the centralizer $C_G(φ)$ has a right Engel sink of cardinality at most $m$, then the index of the Fitting subgroup $F_1(G)$ is bounded in terms of $m$.

On profinite groups with automorphisms whose fixed points have countable Engel sinks

An Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr E}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ belong to ${\mathscr E}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is an Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr E}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) It is proved that if a profinite group $G$ admits an elementary abelian group of automorphisms $A$ of coprime order $q^2$ for a prime $q$ such that for each $a\in A\setminus\{1\}$ every element of the centralizer $C_G(a)$ has a countable (or finite) Engel sink, then $G$ has a finite normal subgroup $N$ such that $G/N$ is locally nilpotent.

Compact groups in which all elements have countable right Engel sinks

A right Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr R}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]$ belong to ${\mathscr R}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr R}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) It is proved that if every element of a compact (Hausdorff) group $G$ has a countable (or finite) right Engel sink, then $G$ has a finite normal subgroup $N$ such that $G/N$ is locally nilpotent.

Compact groups with countable Engel sinks

An Engel sink of an element $g$ of a group $G$ is a set ${\mathscr E}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ belong to ${\mathscr E}(g)$. (Thus, $g$ is an Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr E}(g)=\{ 1\}$.) It is proved that if every element of a compact (Hausdorff) group $G$ has a countable (or finite) Engel sink, then $G$ has a finite normal subgroup $N$ such that $G/N$ is locally nilpotent. This settles a question suggested by J. S. Wilson.

Profinite groups with restricted centralizers of commutators

A group G has restricted centralizers if for each g in G the centralizer C_G(g) either is finite or has finite index in G. A theorem of Shalev states that a profinite group with restricted centralizers is abelian-by-finite. In the present article we handle profinite groups with restricted centralizers of word-values. We show that if w is a multilinear commutator word and G a profinite group with restricted centralizers of w-values, then the verbal subgroup w(G) is abelian-by-finite.

Profinite groups with an automorphism whose fixed points are right Engel

An element $g$ of a group $G$ is said to be right Engel if for every $x\in G$ there is a number $n=n(g,x)$ such that $[g,{}_{n}x]=1$. We prove that if a profinite group $G$ admits a coprime automorphism $φ$ of prime order such that every fixed point of $φ$ is a right Engel element, then $G$ is locally nilpotent.

Right Engel-type subgroups and length parameters of finite groups

Let $g$ be an element of a finite group $G$ and let $R_{n}(g)$ be the subgroup generated by all the right Engel values $[g,{}_{n}x]$ over $x\in G$. In the case when $G$ is soluble we prove that if, for some $n$, the Fitting height of $R_{n}(g)$ is equal to $k$, then $g$ belongs to the $(k+1)$th Fitting subgroup $F_{k+1}(G)$. For nonsoluble $G$, it is proved that if, for some $n$, the generalized Fitting height of $R_n(g)$ is equal to $k$, then $g$ belongs to the generalized Fitting subgroup $F^*_{f(k,m)}(G)$ with $f(k,m)$ depending only on $k$ and $m$, where $|g|$ is the product of $m$ primes counting multiplicities. It is also proved that if, for some $n$, the nonsoluble length of $R_n(g)$ is equal to $k$, then $g$ belongs to a normal subgroup whose nonsoluble length is bounded in terms of $k$ and $m$. Earlier similar generalizations of Baer's theorem (which states that an Engel element of a finite group belongs to the Fitting subgroup) were obtained by the first two authors in terms of left Engel-type subgroups.

Compact groups all elements of which are almost right Engel

We say that an element $g$ of a group $G$ is almost right Engel if there is a finite set ${\mathscr R}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]$ belong to ${\mathscr R}(g)$, that is, for every $x\in G$ there is a positive integer $n(x,g)$ such that $[...[[g,x],x],\dots ,x]\in {\mathscr R}(g)$ if $x$ is repeated at least $n(x,g)$ times. Thus, $g$ is a right Engel element precisely when we can choose ${\mathscr R}(g)=\{ 1\}$. We prove that if all elements of a compact (Hausdorff) group $G$ are almost right Engel, then $G$ has a finite normal subgroup $N$ such that $G/N$ is locally nilpotent. If in addition there is a uniform bound $|{\mathscr R}(g)|\leq m$ for the orders of the corresponding sets, then the subgroup $N$ can be chosen of order bounded in terms of $m$. The proofs use the Wilson--Zelmanov theorem saying that Engel profinite groups are locally nilpotent and previous results of the authors about compact groups all elements of which are almost left Engel.

Finite groups with Engel sinks of bounded rank

For an element $g$ of a group $G$, an Engel sink is a subset ${\mathscr E}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ belong to ${\mathscr E}(g)$. A~finite group is nilpotent if and only if every element has a trivial Engel sink. We prove that if in a finite group $G$ every element has an Engel sink generating a subgroup of rank~$r$, then $G$ has a normal subgroup $N$ of rank bounded in terms of $r$ such that $G/N$ is nilpotent.

Almost Engel compact groups

We say that a group $G$ is almost Engel if for every $g\in G$ there is a finite set ${\mathscr E}(g)$ such that for every $x\in G$ all sufficiently long commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ belong to ${\mathscr E}(g)$, that is, for every $x\in G$ there is a positive integer $n(x,g)$ such that $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]\in {\mathscr E}(g)$ if $g$ is repeated at least $n(x,g)$ times. (Thus, Engel groups are precisely the almost Engel groups for which we can choose ${\mathscr E}(g)=\{ 1\}$ for all $g\in G$.) We prove that if a compact (Hausdorff) group $G$ is almost Engel, then $G$ has a finite normal subgroup $N$ such that $G/N$ is locally nilpotent. If in addition there is a uniform bound $|{\mathscr E}(g)|\leq m$ for the orders of the corresponding sets, then the subgroup $N$ can be chosen of order bounded in terms of $m$. The proofs use the Wilson--Zelmanov theorem saying that Engel profinite groups are locally nilpotent.

Almost Engel finite and profinite groups

Let $g$ be an element of a group $G$. For a positive integer $n$, let $E_n(g)$ be the subgroup generated by all commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots ,g]$ over $x\in G$, where $g$ is repeated $n$ times. We prove that if $G$ is a profinite group such that for every $g\in G$ there is $n=n(g)$ such that $E_n(g)$ is finite, then $G$ has a finite normal subgroup $N$ such that $G/N$ is locally nilpotent. The proof uses the Wilson--Zelmanov theorem saying that Engel profinite groups are locally nilpotent. In the case of a finite group $G$, we prove that if, for some $n$, $|E_n(g)|\leq m$ for all $g\in G$, then the order of the nilpotent residual $γ_{\infty}(G)$ is bounded in terms of $m$.

Finite groups and Lie rings with an automorphism of order $2^n$

Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits an automorphism $φ$ of order $2^n$ such that the fixed-point subgroup $C_G(φ^{2^{n-1}})$ of the involution $φ^{2^{n-1}}$ is nilpotent of class $c$. Let $m=|C_G(φ)|$ be the number of fixed points of $φ$. It is proved that $G$ has a characteristic soluble subgroup of derived length bounded in terms of $n,c$ whose index is bounded in terms of $m,n,c$. A similar result is also proved for Lie rings.

On varieties of groups satisfying an Engel type identity

Let m, n be positive integers, v a multilinear commutator word and w = v^m. Denote by v(G) and w(G) the verbal subgroups of a group G corresponding to v and w, respectively. We prove that the class of all groups G in which the w-values are n-Engel and w(G) is locally nilpotent is a variety (Theorem A). Further, we show that in the case where m is a prime-power the class of all groups G in which the w-values are n-Engel and v(G) has an ascending normal series whose quotients are either locally soluble or locally finite is a variety (Theorem B). We examine the question whether the latter result remains valid with m allowed to be an arbitrary positive integer. In this direction, we show that if m, n are positive integers, u a multilinear commutator word and v the product of 896 u-words, then the class of all groups G in which the v^m-values are n-Engel and the verbal subgroup u(G) has an ascending normal series whose quotients are either locally soluble or locally finite is a variety (Theorem C).

On the length of finite groups and of fixed points

The generalized Fitting height of a finite group $G$ is the least number $h=h^*(G)$ such that $F^*_h(G)=G$, where the $F^*_i(G)$ is the generalized Fitting series: $F^*_1(G)=F^*(G)$ and $F^*_{i+1}(G)$ is the inverse image of $F^*(G/F^*_{i}(G))$. It is proved that if $G$ admits a soluble group of automorphisms $A$ of coprime order, then $h^*(G)$ is bounded in terms of $h^* (C_G(A))$, where $C_G(A)$ is the fixed-point subgroup, and the number of prime factors of $|A|$ counting multiplicities. The result follows from the special case when $A=\langleφ\rangle$ is of prime order, where it is proved that $F^*(C_G(φ))\leqslant F^*_{9}(G)$. The nonsoluble length $λ(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is defined as the minimum number of nonsoluble factors in a normal series each of whose factors either is soluble or is a direct product of nonabelian simple groups. It is proved that if $A$ is a group of automorphisms of $G$ of coprime order, then $λ(G)$ is bounded in terms of $λ(C_G(A))$ and the number of prime factors of $|A|$ counting multiplicities.
