Towards the understanding of heavy quarks hadronization: from leptonic to heavy-ion collisions

The formation of hadrons is a fundamental process in nature that can be investigated at particle colliders. As several recent findings demonstrate, with $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collisions as a "vacuum-like" reference at one extreme, and central nucleus--nucleus as a dense, extended-size system characterized by flow and local equilibrium at the opposite extreme, different collision systems offer a lever arm that can be exploited to probe with a range of heavy-flavour hadron species the onset of various hadronization processes. In this review, we present an overview of the theoretical and experimental developments. The focus is on open-heavy-flavour measurements. The comparison with model predictions and connections among the results in electron-positron, proton--proton, proton--nucleus, nucleus--nucleus collisions are discussed. After reviewing the current state, we suggest some prospects and future developments.

Antenna Showers with One-Loop Matrix Elements

We consider the probability for a colour-singlet qqbar pair to emit a gluon, in strongly and smoothly ordered antenna showers. We expand to second order in alphaS and compare to the second-order QCD matrix elements for Z -> 3 jets, neglecting terms suppressed by 1/NC^2. We give a prescription that corrects the shower to the matrix-element result at this order for both soft and hard emissions, thereby explicitly reducing its dependence on evolution- and renormalization-scale choices. We confirm that the choice of pT for both of these scales absorbs all logarithms through order alphaS^2, and contrast this with various alternatives. We include these corrections in the VINCIA shower generator and study the impact on LEP event-shape and fragmentation observables. An uncertainty estimate is provided for each event, in the form of a vector of alternative weights.

Physics at a 100 TeV pp collider: Standard Model processes

This report summarises the properties of Standard Model processes at the 100 TeV pp collider. We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches.

Automated Parton-Shower Variations in Pythia 8

In the era of precision physics measurements at the LHC, efficient and exhaustive estimations of theoretical uncertainties play an increasingly crucial role. In the context of Monte Carlo (MC) event generators, the estimation of such uncertainties traditionally requires independent MC runs for each variation, for a linear increase in total run time. In this work, we report on an automated evaluation of the dominant (renormalization-scale and non-singular) perturbative uncertainties in the PYTHIA 8 event generator, with only a modest computational overhead. Each generated event is accompanied by a vector of alternative weights (one for each uncertainty variation), with each set separately preserving the total cross section. Explicit scale-compensating terms can be included, reflecting known coefficients of higher-order splitting terms and reducing the effect of the variations. The formalism also allows for the enhancement of rare partonic splittings, such as $g \to b \bar{b}$ and $q\to q γ$, to obtain weighted samples enriched in these splittings while preserving the correct physical Sudakov factors.

Report of the Snowmass 2013 energy frontier QCD working group

This is the summary report of the energy frontier QCD working group prepared for Snowmass 2013. We review the status of tools, both theoretical and experimental, for understanding the strong interactions at colliders. We attempt to prioritize important directions that future developments should take. Most of the efforts of the QCD working group concentrate on proton-proton colliders, at 14 TeV as planned for the next run of the LHC, and for 33 and 100 TeV, possible energies of the colliders that will be necessary to carry on the physics program started at 14 TeV. We also examine QCD predictions and measurements at lepton-lepton and lepton-hadron colliders, and in particular their ability to improve our knowledge of strong coupling constant and parton distribution functions.

Antenna Showers with Hadronic Initial States

We present an antenna shower formalism including contributions from initial-state partons and corresponding backwards evolution. We give a set of phase-space maps and antenna functions for massless partons which define a complete shower formalism suitable for computing observables with hadronic initial states. We focus on the initial-state components: initial-initial and initial-final antenna configurations. The formalism includes comprehensive possibilities for uncertainty estimates. We report on some preliminary results obtained with an implementation in the Vincia antenna-shower framework.

The SM and NLO Multileg and SM MC Working Groups: Summary Report

The 2011 Les Houches workshop was the first to confront LHC data. In the two years since the previous workshop there have been significant advances in both soft and hard QCD, particularly in the areas of multi-leg NLO calculations, the inclusion of those NLO calculations into parton shower Monte Carlos, and the tuning of the non-perturbative parameters of those Monte Carlos. These proceedings describe the theoretical advances that have taken place, the impact of the early LHC data, and the areas for future development.

Flavour Les Houches Accord: Interfacing Flavour related Codes

We present the Flavour Les Houches Accord (FLHA) which specifies a unique set of conventions for flavour-related parameters and observables. The FLHA uses the generic SUSY Les Houches Accord (SLHA) file structure. It defines the relevant Standard Model masses, Wilson coefficients, decay constants, bag parameters, flavour observables, etc. The accord provides a universal and model-independent interface between codes evaluating and/or using flavour-related observables.

Monte Carlo tuning in the presence of Matching

We consider the impact of varying alpha_s choices (and scales) on each side of the so-called "matching scale" in MLM-matched matrix-element + parton-shower predictions of collider observables. We explain how inconsistent prescriptions can lead to counter-intuitive results and present a few explicit examples, focusing mostly on W/Z + jets processes. We give a specific prescription for how to improve the consistency of the matching and also address how to perform consistent tune variations (e.g., of the renormalization scale) around a central choice. Comparisons to several collider processes are included to illustrate the properties of the resulting improved matching, relying on Alpgen+Pythia6, with the latter using the so-called Perugia 2011 tunes, developed as part of this effort.

Efficient Matrix-Element Matching with Sector Showers

A Markovian shower algorithm based on "sector antennae" is presented and its main properties illustrated. Tree-level full-color matrix elements can be automatically incorporated in the algorithm and are re-interpreted as process-dependent 2 -> n antenna functions. In hard parts of phase-space, these functions generate tree-level matrix-element corrections to the shower. In soft parts, they should improve the logarithmic accuracy of it. The number of matrix-element evaluations required per order of matching is 1, with an unweighting efficiency that remains very high for arbitrary numbers of legs. Total rates can be augmented to NLO precision in a straightforward way. As a proof of concept, we present an implementation in the publicly available VINCIA plug-in to the PYTHIA 8 event generator, for hadronic $Z^0$ decays including tree-level matrix elements through ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$.

Proceedings of the First International Workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions at the LHC (MPI08)

The objective of this first workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is to raise the profile of MPI studies, summarizing the legacy from the older phenomenology at hadronic colliders and favouring further specific contacts between the theory and experimental communities. The MPI are experiencing a growing popularity and are currently widely invoked to account for observations that would not be explained otherwise: the activity of the Underlying Event, the cross sections for multiple heavy flavour production, the survival probability of large rapidity gaps in hard diffraction, etc. At the same time, the implementation of the MPI effects in the Monte Carlo models is quickly proceeding through an increasing level of sophistication and complexity that in perspective achieves deep general implications for the LHC physics. The ultimate ambition of this workshop is to promote the MPI as unification concept between seemingly heterogeneous research lines and to profit of the complete experimental picture in order to constrain their implementation in the models, evaluating the spin offs on the LHC physics program.

A proposal for a standard interface between Monte Carlo tools and one-loop programs

Many highly developed Monte Carlo tools for the evaluation of cross sections based on tree matrix elements exist and are used by experimental collaborations in high energy physics. As the evaluation of one-loop matrix elements has recently been undergoing enormous progress, the combination of one-loop matrix elements with existing Monte Carlo tools is on the horizon. This would lead to phenomenological predictions at the next-to-leading order level. This note summarises the discussion of the next-to-leading order multi-leg (NLM) working group on this issue which has been taking place during the workshop on Physics at TeV colliders at Les Houches, France, in June 2009. The result is a proposal for a standard interface between Monte Carlo tools and one-loop matrix element programs.
