Magnetocaloric effect in Tb$_{31}$Co$_{69}$ and Dy$_{31}$Co$_{69}$ thin films deposited on Si substrates

We present the structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of thin films with stoichiometry Tb$_{31}$Co$_{69}$ and Dy$_{31}$Co$_{69}$ deposited on naturally oxidized silicon Si (100) substrates. Samples with a thickness $d=50$ nm covered with a protective Au overlayer with a thickness $d_{\rm Au} =5 $ nm were produced using the pulsed laser deposition technique. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the presence of crystallized Laves phases and amorphous phases in the prepared materials. Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature revealed ferrimagnetic behavior in both samples. We estimated the compensation temperature $T_{\rm comp}$ of the amorphous phase for Tb$_{31}$Co$_{69}$ at 81.5 K and for Dy$_{31}$Co$_{69}$ at 88.5 K, while we found the Curie temperature $T_{\rm C,\ Laves}$ of the crystallized Laves phases at 204.5 K and at 117 K, respectively. We investigated the magnetocaloric effect in a wide temperature range, covering $T_{\rm comp}$ of amorphous phases and $T_{\rm C,\ Laves}$ of crystallized Laves phases. The analysis for the magnetic field change of $\Delta \mu_0H=5$ T showed values of the magnetic entropy change of $-\Delta S_{\rm M}=4.9$ mJ cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ at $T_{\rm comp}$ and $-\Delta S_{\rm M}=6.6$ mJ cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ at $T_{\rm C,\ Laves}$ for Tb$_{31}$Co$_{69}$, while for Dy$_{31}$Co$_{69}$, we determined the values of $-\Delta S_{\rm M}=35$ mJ cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ at $T_{\rm comp}$ and $-\Delta S_{\rm M}=28$ mJ cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ at $T_{\rm C,\ Laves}$.

Electronic structure of CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge$_3$ studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles calculations

A transformation between the magnetically ordered CeCoGe$_3$ and heavy fermion CeFeGe$_3$ is isostructural but not isoelectronic, therefore the characterization of the electronic structure of the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge$_3$ series is of special importance. We report both the experimental investigation by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements and the first-principles calculations within the full-potential local-orbital (FPLO) scheme based on the density functional theory. Experimentally, we investigate mainly the valence band and the Ce $3d$ spectra, both giving the possibility to conclude about the level of the $f$ states localization. Computationally, we investigate the most characteristic CeCoGe$_3$, CeCo$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$Ge$_3$, and CeFeGe$_3$ compositions. Based on the electronic band structure results, we calculate the X-ray photoelectron spectra of the valence band. We consider the effects of the spin-orbit coupling and intra-atomic Hubbard U repulsion. Furthermore, we discuss the charge distribution and occupation of valence-band orbitals. The experimentally observed evolution of the 3$d$ band with the Fe concentration is related to the decrease of the number of electrons and reduction of the 3$d$ photoionization cross-sections. Calculations indicate that charge is transferred mainly from the Ce to Ge sites and the bondings are formed mainly by the Ce 5$d$, Fe/Co 3$d$, and Ge 4$p$ and 4$s$ orbitals.

Influence of Pr substitution on physical properties of Ce$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$CoGe$_3$ system: A combined experimental and first-principles study

We present the results of our investigations of physical properties for the novel Ce$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$CoGe$_3$ system performed with a number of experimental methods: magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and thermoelectric power. Moreover, the electronic structure was studied by means of photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations. All investigated compositions of the Ce$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$CoGe$_3$ series crystallize in the tetragonal BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. The lattice parameters and unit cell volumes decrease with increasing Pr concentration. On the basis of the measurements taken, a preliminary magnetic phase diagram was created. A continuous suppression of the long-range magnetic ordering was observed with increase of Pr concentration. The critical Pr concentration for magnetic moment ordering was determined from linear extrapolation of the ordering temperature $versus$ $x$ to the lowest temperatures ($T = 0$ K) and is equal to about 0.66. Based on the first-principles calculations we show how the substitution of Pr for Ce affects the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the considered alloys. Within a single model we take into account the magnetic ordering, fully-relativistic effects, and Hubbard U repulsion on Ce and Pr. The impact of Hubbard U on the results of calculations is also discussed. We present the valence-band analysis, Mulliken electronic population analysis, and calculated electronic specific heat coefficients. For CeCoGe$_3$ it is found that the $++--$ configuration of magnetic moments on Ce is slightly more stable than the $+-+-$ one, and also that the calculated value of total magnetic moment on Ce (including spin and orbital parts) is in good agreement with the measurements.

CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge$_{3}$ -- crystal electric field effects and fine tuning around critical substitution

In this article we present some particularly important issues regarding the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge$_{3}$ alloys. Firstly, the electrical resistivity below 2 K, down to 500 mK is studied to confirm the non-Fermi-liquid behavior around the critical substitution range x~0.65. Secondly, the scheme of the crystal electric field (CEF) levels has been investigated employing methods like inelastic neutron scattering, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility. It aims to clarify different reports on the parent CeCoGe$_{3}$ compound and to provide first data concerning CEF in the entire CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge$_{3}$ series. Third, the effect of hydrogenation, especially around the quantum critical point (QCP) (x~0.65) is verified.

X-ray photoemission and resistivity studies of the Pd-covered Ce thin films

We have fabricated Ce/Pd bilayers grown on the SiO$_2$ substrate by magnetron sputtering under ultrahigh vacuum. Usage of palladium layer on top of the Ce film appears to prevent effectively the sample oxidation. The thickness of the cerium films is between 10 - 200 nm and 10 nm-thick palladium overlayers are always used. We have performed $in - situ$ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on the as-deposited films and $ex - situ$ electrical resistivity measurements and XRD characterization. XPS confirms a very good quality of the samples. The analysis of the Ce $3d$ spectrum suggests that the $f$ states of Ce are on the border between the fluctuating valence and localization. The resistivity measurements reveal a competition of the Kondo scattering, semiconducting and metallic behaviors as well as the influence of the dimensional effect.

Complex magnetism and non-Fermi liquid state in the vicinity of the quantum critical point in the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge$_3$ series

We report extensive studies on the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge$_3$ alloys, which show quantum critical point (QCP) due to damping the antiferromagnetic order in CeCoGe$_3$ down to 0 K by doping with the paramagnetic CeFeGe$_3$ compound. The presence of QCP is confirmed by detecting the non-Fermi liquid behavior (NFL) using a wide range of the experimental methods: magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and thermoelectric power. In the case of the thermoelectric power we find a clear enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient for $x$ around 0.6, i.e. in the neighborhood of QCP. Finally, the different complementary studies enabled construction of the complex magnetic phase diagram for the CeCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Ge$_3$ system, including the energy scale imposed by the crystal electric field splitting of the Ce ground state.
