Superconductors with Topological Order

We propose a mechanism of superconductivity in which the order of the ground state does not arise from the usual Landau mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking but is rather of topological origin. The low-energy effective theory is formulated in terms of emerging gauge fields rather than a local order parameter and the ground state is degenerate on topologically non-trivial manifolds. The simplest example of this mechanism of superconductivty is concretely realized as global superconductivty in Josephson junction arrays.

Finite-Temperature Renormalization Group Analysis of Interaction Effects in 2D Lattices of Bose-Einstein Condensates

By using a renormalization group analysis, we study the effect of interparticle interactions on the critical temperature at which the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition occurs for Bose-Einstein condensates loaded at finite temperature in a 2D optical lattice. We find that the critical temperature decreases as the interaction energy decreases; when U/J=36/πone has a vanishing critical temperature, signaling the possibility of a quantum phase transition of BKT type.

Propagation of Discrete Solitons in Inhomogeneous Networks

In many physical applications solitons propagate on supports whose topological properties may induce new and interesting effects. In this paper, we investigate the propagation of solitons on chains with a topological inhomogeneity generated by the insertion of a finite discrete network on the chain. For networks connected by a link to a single site of the chain, we derive a general criterion yielding the momenta for perfect reflection and transmission of traveling solitons and we discuss solitonic motion on chains with topological inhomogeneities.

On Defect-Mediated Transitions in Bosonic Planar Lattices

We discuss the finite-temperature properties of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded on a 2D optical lattice. In an experimentally attainable range of parameters the system is described by the XY model, which undergoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition driven by the vortex pair unbinding. The interference pattern of the expanding condensates provides the experimental signature of the BKT transition: near the critical temperature, the k=0 component of the momentum distribution sharply decreases.

Topological Filters for Solitons in Coupled Waveguides Networks

We study the propagation of discrete solitons on chains of coupled optical waveguides where finite networks of waveguides are inserted at some points. By properly selecting the topology of these networks, it is possible to control the transmission of traveling solitons: we show here that inhomogeneous waveguide networks may be used as filters for soliton propagation. Our results provide a first step in the understanding of the interplay/competition between topology and nonlinearity for soliton dynamics in optical fibers.

Observable Signature of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition in a Planar Lattice of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the possibility that Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), loaded on a 2D optical lattice, undergo - at finite temperature - a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. We show that - in an experimentally attainable range of parameters - a planar lattice of BECs is described by the XY model at finite temperature. We demonstrate that the interference pattern of the expanding condensates provides the experimental signature of the BKT transition by showing that, near the critical temperature, the k=0 component of the momentum distribution and the central peak of the atomic density profile sharply decrease. The finite-temperature transition for a 3D optical lattice is also discussed, and the analogies with superconducting Josephson junction networks are stressed through the text.

Topology Induced Spatial Bose-Einstein Condensation for Bosons on Star-Shaped Optical Networks

New coherent states may be induced by pertinently engineering the topology of a network. As an example, we consider the properties of non-interacting bosons on a star network, which may be realized with a dilute atomic gas in a star-shaped deep optical lattice. The ground state is localized around the star center and it is macroscopically occupied below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature T_c. We show that T_c depends only on the number of the star arms and on the Josephson energy of the bosonic Josephson junctions and that the non-condensate fraction is simply given by the reduced temperature T/T_c.

Topology Induced Macroscopic Quantum Coherence in Josephson Junction Networks

We argue that Josephson junction networks may be engineered to allow for the emergence of new and robust quantum coherent states. We provide a rather intuitive argument showing how the change in topology may affect the quantum properties of a bosonic particle hopping on a network. As a paradigmatic example, we analyze in detail the quantum and thermodynamic properties of non-interacting bosons hopping on a comb graph. We show how to explicitly compute the inhomogeneities in the distribution of bosons along the comb's fingers, evidencing the effects of the topology induced spatial Bose-Einstein condensation characteristic of the system. We propose an experiment enabling to detect the spatial Bose-Einstein condensation for Josephson networks built on comb graphs.

On the Phase Diagram of Josephson Junction Arrays with Offset Charges

We study the effects of external offset charges on the phase diagram of Josephson junction arrays. Using the path integral approach, we provide a pedagogical derivation of the equation for the phase boundary line between the insulating and the superconducting phase within the mean-field theory approximation. For a uniform offset charge q=e the superconducting phase increases with respect to q=0 and a characteristic lobe structure appears in the phase diagram when the critical line is plotted as a function of q at fixed temperature. We review our analysis of the physically relevant situation where a Josephson network feels the effect of random offset charges. We observe that the Mott-insulating lobe structure of the phase diagram disappears for large variance (σ> e) of the offset charges probability distribution; with nearest-neighbor interactions, the insulating lobe around q=e is destroyed even for small values of σ. Finally, we study the case of random self-capacitances: here we observe that, until the variance of the distribution reaches a critical value, the superconducting phase increases in comparison to the situation in which all self-capacitances are equal.

Self-Consistent Mean-Field Theory for Frustrated Josephson Junction Arrays

We review the self-consistent mean-field theory for charge-frustrated Josephson junction arrays. Using (ϕis the phase of the superconducting wavefunction) as order parameter and imposing the self-consistency condition, we compute the phase boundary line between the superconducting region ( not equal to zero) and the insulating one ( = 0). For a uniform offset charge q=e the superconducting phase increases with respect to the situation in which q=0. Here, we generalize the self-consistent mean-field theory to include the effects induced by a random distribution of offset charges and/or of diagonal self-capacitances. For most of the phase diagram, our results agree with the outcomes of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations as well as with previous studies using the path-integral approach.

Low-lying meson spectrum of large $N_C$ strongly coupled lattice QCD

We compute the low energy mass spectrum of lattice QCD in the large $N_C$ limit. Expanding around a gauge-invariant ground state, which spontaneously breaks the discrete chiral symmetry, we derive an improved strong-coupling expansion and evaluate, for any value of $N_C$, the masses of the low-lying states in the unflavored meson spectrum. We then take the 't Hooft limit by rescaling $g^2 N_C\to g^2$; the 't Hooft limit is smooth and no arbitrary parameters are needed. We find, already at the fourth order of the strong coupling perturbation theory, a very good agreement between the results of our lattice computation and the known continuum values.

Adiabatic Control of the Electron Phase in a Quantum Dot

A Berry phase can be added to the wavefunction of an isolated quantum dot by adiabatically modulating a nonuniform electric field along a time-cycle. The dot is tuned close to a three-level degeneracy, which provides a wide range of possibilities of control. We propose to detect the accumulated phase by capacitively coupling the dot to a double-path inteferometer. The effective Hamiltonian for the phase-sensitive coupling is discussed in detail.

QCD meson spectrum in the large $N_C$ limit

The low energy mass spectrum of QCD in the large $N_C$ limit is computed. The low-lying states in the meson spectrum are explicitly evaluated up to the fourth order in the strong coupling perturbative expansion. The 't Hooft limit is smooth and the meson masses are in very good agreement with the experimental values.

A Ginsparg-Wilson Approach to Lattice Chern-Simons Theory

The concept of lattice modified symmetry formulations is adapted to the parity symmetry of gauge fields and applied to the pure Abelian Chern-Simons action in three dimensions. We derive an analogue of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation for the parity anti-symmetry, which is motivated from the perfect lattice action, and which we denote as the Chern-Simons-Ginsparg-Wilson relation (CSGWR). In addition to the overlap type solutions, we construct explicitly simple and local polynomial solutions to the CSGWR. We show that these actions are exactly invariant under a lattice modified parity transformation. That transformation is local as well, and it turns into the standard parity transformation in the continuum limit.

Phase diagram of Josephson junction arrays with capacitive disorder

We study the phase diagram at finite temperature of Josephson junction arrays with capacitive disorder (i.e., random offset charges and/or random charging energies): in the limit of large particle numbers per junction, this is a remarkable physical realization of the disordered boson Hubbard model. By using a mean-field approximation, we compute the average free energy and the equation for the phase boundary line between the insulating and the superconducting phase. We find that the Mott-insulating lobe structure disappears for large variance ($σ\gtrsim e$) of the offset charges probability distribution. Further, with nearest-neighbor interactions, the insulating lobe around $q=e$ is destroyed even for small values of $σ$. In the case of random charging energies, until the variance of the distribution reaches some critical value the superconducting phase increases in comparison to the situation in which all self-capacitances are equal.

Chern-Simons theory on the lattice

We present new proposals for the representation of a Chern-Simons term on the lattice. In the first part, such a term is constructed from the fermion determinant, and in the second part directly from the Abelian gauge term. In both cases, the parity transformation is modified on the lattice without affecting its continuum limit.

Bose-Einstein Condensation on inhomogeneous complex networks

The thermodynamic properties of non interacting bosons on a complex network can be strongly affected by topological inhomogeneities. The latter give rise to anomalies in the density of states that can induce Bose-Einstein condensation in low dimensional systems also in absence of external confining potentials. The anomalies consist in energy regions composed of an infinite number of states with vanishing weight in the thermodynamic limit. We present a rigorous result providing the general conditions for the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation on complex networks in presence of anomalous spectral regions in the density of states. We present results on spectral properties for a wide class of graphs where the theorem applies. We study in detail an explicit geometrical realization, the comb lattice, which embodies all the relevant features of this effect and which can be experimentally implemented as an array of Josephson Junctions.

On the Doubling Phenomenon in Lattice Chern-Simons Theories

We analyse the pure Chern-Simons theory on an Euclidean infinite lattice. We point out that, as a consequence of its symmetries, the Chern-Simons theory does not have an integrable kernel. Due to the linearity of the action in the derivatives, the situation is very similar to the one arising in the lattice formulation of fermionic theories. Doubling of bosonic degrees of freedom is removed by adding a Maxwell term with a mechanism similar to the one proposed by Wilson for fermionic models.
