Factorization of the characteristic function of a Jacobi matrix

In a recent paper a class of infinite Jacobi matrices with discrete character of spectra has been introduced. With each Jacobi matrix from this class an analytic function is associated, called the characteristic function, whose zero set coincides with the point spectrum of the corresponding Jacobi operator. Here it is shown that the characteristic function admits Hadamard's factorization in two possible ways -- either in the spectral parameter or in an auxiliary parameter which may be called the coupling constant. As an intermediate result, an explicit expression for the power series expansion of the logarithm of the characteristic function is obtained.

On the two-dimensional Coulomb-like potential with a central point interaction

In the first part of the paper, we introduce the Hamiltonian $-Δ-Z/\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$, Z>0, as a selfadjoint operator in $L^2(R^2)$. A general central point interaction combined with the two-dimensional Coulomb-like potential is constructed and properties of the resulting one-parameter family of Hamiltonians is studied in detail. The construction is also reformulated in the momentum representation and a relation between the coordinate and the momentum representation is derived. In the second part of the paper we prove that the two-dimensional Coulomb-like Hamiltonian can be derived as a norm resolvent limit of the Hamiltonian of a Hydrogen atom in a planar slab as the width of the slab tends to zero.

The characteristic function for Jacobi matrices with applications

We introduce a class of Jacobi operators with discrete spectra which is characterized by a simple convergence condition. With any operator J from this class we associate a characteristic function as an analytic function on a suitable domain, and show that its zero set actually coincides with the set of eigenvalues of J in that domain. Further we derive sufficient conditions under which the spectrum of J is approximated by spectra of truncated finite-dimensional Jacobi matrices. As an application we construct several examples of Jacobi matrices for which the characteristic function can be expressed in terms of special functions. In more detail we study the example where the diagonal sequence of J is linear while the neighboring parallels to the diagonal are constant.

A charged particle in a homogeneous magnetic field accelerated by a time periodic Aharonov-Bohm flux

We consider a nonrelativistic quantum charged particle moving on a plane under the influence of a uniform magnetic field and driven by a periodically time-dependent Aharonov-Bohm flux. We observe an acceleration effect in the case when the Aharonov-Bohm flux depends on time as a sinusoidal function whose frequency is in resonance with the cyclotron frequency. In particular, the energy of the particle increases linearly for large times. An explicit formula for the acceleration rate is derived with the aid of the quantum averaging method, and then it is checked against a numerical solution with a very good agreement.

On the eigenvalue problem for a particular class of finite Jacobi matrices

A function $\mathfrak{F}$ with simple and nice algebraic properties is defined on a subset of the space of complex sequences. Some special functions are expressible in terms of $\mathfrak{F}$, first of all the Bessel functions of first kind. A compact formula in terms of the function $\mathfrak{F}$ is given for the determinant of a Jacobi matrix. Further we focus on the particular class of Jacobi matrices of odd dimension whose parallels to the diagonal are constant and whose diagonal depends linearly on the index. A formula is derived for the characteristic function. Yet another formula is presented in which the characteristic function is expressed in terms of the function $\mathfrak{F}$ in a simple and compact manner. A special basis is constructed in which the Jacobi matrix becomes a sum of a diagonal matrix and a rank-one matrix operator. A vector-valued function on the complex plain is constructed having the property that its values on spectral points of the Jacobi matrix are equal to corresponding eigenvectors.

On the Spectrum of a Quantum Dot with Impurity in the Lobachevsky Plane

A model of a quantum dot with impurity in the Lobachevsky plane is considered. Relying on explicit formulae for the Green function and the Krein $Q-$function which have been derived in a previous work we focus on the numerical analysis of the spectrum. The analysis is complicated by the fact that the basic formulae are expressed in terms of spheroidal functions with general characteristic exponents. The effect of the curvature on eigenvalues and eigenfunctions is investigated. Moreover, there is given an asymptotic expansion of eigenvalues as the curvature radius tends to infinity (the flat case limit).

Generalized Bloch analysis and propagators on Riemannian manifolds with a discrete symmetry

We consider an invariant quantum Hamiltonian $H=-Δ_{LB}+V$ in the $L^{2}$ space based on a Riemannian manifold $\tilde{M}$ with a countable discrete symmetry group $Γ$. Typically, $\tilde{M}$ is the universal covering space of a multiply connected Riemannian manifold $M$ and $Γ$ is the fundamental group of $M$. On the one hand, following the basic step of the Bloch analysis, one decomposes the $L^{2}$ space over $\tilde{M}$ into a direct integral of Hilbert spaces formed by equivariant functions on $\tilde{M}$. The Hamiltonian $H$ decomposes correspondingly, with each component $H_Λ$ being defined by a quasi-periodic boundary condition. The quasi-periodic boundary conditions are in turn determined by irreducible unitary representations $Λ$ of $Γ$. On the other hand, fixing a quasi-periodic boundary condition (i.e., a unitary representation $Λ$ of $Γ$) one can express the corresponding propagator in terms of the propagator associated to the Hamiltonian $H$. We discuss these procedures in detail and show that in a sense they are mutually inverse.

Propagators associated to periodic Hamiltonians: an example of the Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonian with two vortices

We consider an invariant quantum Hamiltonian $H=-Δ_{LB}+V$ in the $L^{2}$ space based on a Riemannian manifold $\tilde{M}$ with a discrete symmetry group $Γ$. Typically, $\tilde{M}$ is the universal covering space of a multiply connected manifold $M$ and $Γ$ is the fundamental group of $M$. To any unitary representation $Λ$ of $Γ$ one can relate another operator on $M=\tilde{M}/Γ$, called $H_Λ$, which formally corresponds to the same differential operator as $H$ but which is determined by quasi-periodic boundary conditions. We give a brief review of the Bloch decomposition of $H$ and of a formula relating the propagators associated to the Hamiltonians $H_Λ$ and $H$. Then we concentrate on the example of the Aharonov-Bohm effect with two vortices. We explain in detail the construction of the propagator in this case and indicate all essential intermediate steps.

A Quantum Dot with Impurity in the Lobachevsky Plane

The curvature effect on a quantum dot with impurity is investigated. The model is considered on the Lobachevsky plane. The confinement and impurity potentials are chosen so that the model is explicitly solvable. The Green function as well as the Krein Q-function are computed.

On the harmonic oscillator on the Lobachevsky plane

We introduce the harmonic oscillator on the Lobachevsky plane with the aid of the potential $V(r)=(a^2ω^2/4)sinh(r/a)^2$ where $a$ is the curvature radius and $r$ is the geodesic distance from a fixed center. Thus the potential is rotationally symmetric and unbounded likewise as in the Euclidean case. The eigenvalue equation leads to the differential equation of spheroidal functions. We provide a basic numerical analysis of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in the case when the value of the angular momentum, $m$, equals 0.

On a semiclassical formula for non-diagonal matrix elements

Let $H(\hbar)=-\hbar^2d^2/dx^2+V(x)$ be a Schrödinger operator on the real line, $W(x)$ be a bounded observable depending only on the coordinate and $k$ be a fixed integer. Suppose that an energy level $E$ intersects the potential $V(x)$ in exactly two turning points and lies below $V_\infty=\liminf_{|x|\to\infty} V(x)$. We consider the semiclassical limit $n\to\infty$, $\hbar=\hbar_n\to0$ and $E_n=E$ where $E_n$ is the $n$th eigen-energy of $H(\hbar)$. An asymptotic formula for $<{}n|W(x)|n+k>$, the non-diagonal matrix elements of $W(x)$ in the eigenbasis of $H(\hbar)$, has been known in the theoretical physics for a long time. Here it is proved in a mathematically rigorous manner.

Dynamics of a classical Hall system driven by a time-dependent Aharonov--Bohm flux

We study the dynamics of a classical particle moving in a punctured plane under the influence of a strong homogeneous magnetic field, an electrical background, and driven by a time-dependent singular flux tube through the hole. We exhibit a striking classical (de)localization effect: in the far past the trajectories are spirals around a bound center; the particle moves inward towards the flux tube loosing kinetic energy. After hitting the puncture it becomes ``conducting'': the motion is a cycloid around a center whose drift is outgoing, orthogonal to the electric field, diffusive, and without energy loss.

Zero modes in a system of Aharonov--Bohm solenoids on the Lobachevsky plane

We consider a spin 1/2 charged particle on the Lobachevsky plane subjected to a magnetic field corresponding to a discrete system of Aharonov-Bohm solenoids. Let $H^+$ and $H^-$ be the two components of the Pauli operator for spin up and down, respectively. We show that neither $H^+$ nor $H^-$ has a zero mode if the number of solenoids is finite. On the other hand, a construction is described of an infinite periodic system of solenoids for which either $H^+$ or $H^-$ has zero modes depending on the value of the flux carried by the solenoids.

Propagators weakly associated to a family of Hamiltonians and the adiabatic theorem for the Landau Hamiltonian with a time-dependent Aharonov-Bohm flux

We study the dynamics of a quantum particle moving in a plane under the influence of a constant magnetic field and driven by a slowly time-dependent singular flux tube through a puncture. The known adiabatic results do not cover these models as the Hamiltonian has time dependent domain. We give a meaning to the propagator and prove an adiabatic theorem. To this end we introduce and develop the new notion of a propagator weakly associated to a time-dependent Hamiltonian.

Zero modes in a system of Aharonov-Bohm fluxes

We study zero modes of two-dimensional Pauli operators with Aharonov--Bohm fluxes in the case when the solenoids are arranged in periodic structures like chains or lattices. We also consider perturbations to such periodic systems which may be infinite and irregular but they are always supposed to be sufficiently scarce.

Progressive diagonalization and applications

We give a partial review of what is known so far on stability of periodically driven quantum systems versus regularity of the bounded driven force. In particular we emphasize the fact that unbounded degeneracies of the unperturbed Hamiltonian are allowed. Then we give a detailed description of an extension to some unbounded driven forces. This is done by representing the Schroedinger equation in the instantaneous basis of the time dependent Hamiltonian with a method that we call progressive diagonalization.

On the Pauli operator for the Aharonov-Bohm effect with two solenoids

We consider a spin-1/2 charged particle in the plane under the influence of two idealized Aharonov-Bohm fluxes. We show that the Pauli operator as a differential operator is defined by appropriate boundary conditions at the two vortices. Further we explicitly construct a basis in the deficiency subspaces of the symmetric operator obtained by restricting the domain to functions with supports separated from the vortices. This construction makes it possible to apply the Krein's formula to the Pauli operator.
