Laser-induced ultrafast structural transformations in thin Fe layer revealed by time-resolved X-ray diffraction

The ultrafast structural response of a thin iron film to sub-ps pulsed laser-induced heating has been investigated using time-resolved X-ray diffraction in the partial melting regime. A tetragonal distortion of the bcc-phase emerges at ~6 ps. Its formation is delayed relative to the initial heating (1-2 ps) and partial melting (2-5 ps) of the material, and controlled by the stress release in the quasi-instantaneously pressurized film. The distortion persists for at least 60 ps indicating the formation of a metastable bct phase between the equilibrium bcc and fcc phases.

Analyses of Flight Time During Solar Proton Events and Solar Flares

Analyzing the effects of space weather on aviation is a new and developing topic. It has been commonly accepted that the flight time of the polar flights may increase during solar proton events because the flights have to change their route to avoid the high-energy particles. However, apart from such phenomenon, researches related to the flight time during space weather events is very rare. Based on the analyses of 39 representative international air routes around westerlies, it is found that 97.44% (94.87%) of the commercial airplanes on the westbound (eastbound) air routes reveal shorter (longer) flight time during solar proton events compared to those during quiet periods, and the averaged magnitude of change in flight time is ~10 min or 0.21%-4.17% of the total flight durations. Comparative investigations reassure the certainty of such phenomenon that the directional differences in flight time are still incontrovertible regardless of over-land routes (China-Europe) or over-sea routes (China-Western America). Further analyses suggest that the solar proton events associated atmospheric heating will change the flight durations by weakening certain atmospheric circulations, such as the polar jet stream. While the polar jet stream will not be obviously altered during solar flares so that the directional differences in flight time are not found. Besides the conventional space weather effects already known, this paper is the first report that indicates a distinct new scenario of how the solar proton events affect flight time. These analyses are also important for aviation since our discoveries could help the airways optimize the air routes to save passenger time costs, reduce fuel costs and even contribute to the global warming issues.

New sensitivity of current LHC measurements to vector-like quarks

Quark partners with non-chiral couplings appear in several extensions of the Standard Model. They may have non-trivial generational structure to their couplings, and may be produced either in pairs via the strong and EM interactions, or singly via the new couplings of the model. Their decays often produce heavy quarks and gauge bosons, which will contribute to a variety of already-measured "Standard Model" cross-sections at the LHC. We present a study of the sensitivity of such published LHC measurements to vector-like quarks, first comparing to limits already obtained from dedicated searches, and then broadening to some so-far unstudied parameter regions.

Interplay between unconventional superconductivity and heavy-fermion quantum criticality: CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ versus YbRh$_2$Si$_2$

In this paper the low-temperature properties of two isostructural canonical heavy-fermion compounds are contrasted with regards to the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality and superconductivity. For CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, fully-gapped d-wave superconductivity forms in the vicinity of an itinerant three-dimensional heavy-fermion spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum critical point (QCP). Inelastic neutron scattering results highlight that both quantum critical SDW fluctuations as well as Mott-type fluctuations of local magnetic moments contribute to the formation of Cooper pairs in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. In YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, superconductivity appears to be suppressed at $T\gtrsim~10$ mK by AF order ($T_N$ = 70 mK). Ultra-low temperature measurements reveal a hybrid order between nuclear and 4f-electronic spins, which is dominated by the Yb-derived nuclear spins, to develop at $T_A$ slightly above 2 mK. The hybrid order turns out to strongly compete with the primary 4f-electronic order and to push the material towards its QCP. Apparently, this paves the way for heavy-fermion superconductivity to form at $T_c$ = 2 mK. Like the pressure - induced QCP in CeRhIn$_5$, the magnetic field - induced one in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is of the local Kondo-destroying variety which corresponds to a Mott-type transition at zero temperature. Therefore, these materials form the link between the large family of about fifty low-$T$ unconventional heavy - fermion superconductors and other families of unconventional superconductors with higher $T_c$s, notably the doped Mott insulators of the cuprates, organic charge-transfer salts and some of the Fe-based superconductors. Our study suggests that heavy-fermion superconductivity near an AF QCP is a robust phenomenon.

Setup for meV-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering measurements at the Matter in Extreme Conditions Endstation at the LCLS

We describe a setup for performing inelastic X-ray scattering measurements at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) endstation of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). This technique is capable of performing high-, meV-resolution measurements of dynamic ion features in both crystalline and non-crystalline materials. A four-bounce silicon (533) monochromator was used in conjunction with three silicon (533) diced crystal analyzers to provide an energy resolution of ~50 meV over a range of ~500 meV in single shot measurements. In addition to the instrument resolution function, we demonstrate the measurement of longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in polycrystalline diamond. Furthermore, this setup may be combined with the high intensity laser drivers available at MEC to create warm dense matter, and subsequently measure ion acoustic modes.

Study of time evolution of the bend-over energy in the energetic particle spectrum at a parallel shock

Shock acceleration is considered one of the most important mechanisms for the acceleration of astrophysical energetic particles. In this work, we calculate the trajectories of a large number of test charged particles accurately in a parallel shock with magnetic turbulence. We investigate the time evolution of the accelerated-particle energy spectrum in the downstream of the shock in order to understand the acceleration mechanism of energetic particles. From simulation results we obtain power-law energy spectra with a bend-over energy, $E_0$, increasing with time. With the particle mean acceleration time and mean momentum change during each cycle of the shock crossing from diffusive shock acceleration model (following Drury), a time-dependent differential equation for the maximum energy, $E_{acc}$, of particles accelerated at the shock, can be approximately obtained. We assume the theoretical bend-over energy as $E_{acc}$. It is found that the bend-over energy from simulations agrees well with the theoretical bend-over energy using the non-linear diffusion theory, NLGCE-F, in contrast to that using the classic quasi-linear theory (QLT).

Thermal and Electrical Transport across a Magnetic Quantum Critical Point

A quantum critical point (QCP) arises at a continuous transition between competing phases at zero temperature. Collective excitations at magnetic QCPs give rise to metallic properties that strongly deviate from the expectations of Landau's Fermi liquid description, the standard theory of electron correlations in metals. Central to this theory is the notion of quasiparticles, electronic excitations which possess the quantum numbers of the bare electrons. Here we report measurements of thermal and electrical transport across the field-induced magnetic QCP in the heavy-fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. We show that the ratio of the thermal to electrical conductivities at the zero-temperature limit obeys the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law above the critical field, $B_c$. This is also expected at $B < B_c$, where weak antiferromagnetic order and a Fermi liquid phase form below 0.07 K ($B = 0$). However, at the critical field the low-temperature electrical conductivity suggests a non-Fermi-liquid ground state and exceeds the thermal conductivity by about 10%. This apparent violation of the WF law provides evidence for an unconventional type of QCP at which the fundamental concept of Landau quasiparticles breaks down. These results imply that Landau quasiparticles break up, and that the origin of this disintegration is inelastic scattering associated with electronic quantum critical fluctuations. Our finding brings new insights into understanding deviations from Fermi-liquid behaviour frequently observed in various classes of correlated materials.

Unchanged thermopower enhancement at the semiconductor-metal transition in correlated FeSb$_{2-x}$Te$_x$

Substitution of Sb in FeSb$_2$ by less than 0.5% of Te induces a transition from a correlated semiconductor to an unconventional metal with large effective charge carrier mass $m^*$. Spanning the entire range of the semiconductor-metal crossover, we observed an almost constant enhancement of the measured thermopower compared to that estimated by the classical theory of electron diffusion. Using the latter for a quantitative description one has to employ an enhancement factor of 10-30. Our observations point to the importance of electron-electron correlations in the thermal transport of FeSb$_2$, and suggest a route to design thermoelectric materials for cryogenic applications.

Field dependence of the thermopower of CeNiSn

Previously measured thermopower data of CeNiSn exhibit a significant sample dependence and non-monotonous behavior in magnetic fields. In this paper we demonstrate that the measured thermopower S(T) may contain a contribution from the huge Nernst coefficient of the compound, even in moderate fields of 2 T. A correction for this effect allows to determine the intrinsic field dependence of S(T). The observed thermopower behavior can be understood from Zeeman splitting of a V-shaped pseudogap in magnetic fields.
