V1294 Aql = HD 184279: A bad boy among Be stars or an important clue to the Be phenomenon?

A reliable determination of the basic physical properties and variability patterns of hot emission-line stars is important for understanding the Be phenomenon and ultimately, the evolutionary stage of Be stars. This study is devoted to one of the most remarkable Be stars, V1294 Aql = HD 184279. We collected and analysed spectroscopic and photometric observations covering a time interval of about 25000 d (68 yr). We present evidence that the object is a single-line 192.9 d spectroscopic binary and estimate that the secondary probably is a hot compact object with a mass of about 1.1-1.2 solar masses. We found and documented very complicated orbital and long-term spectral, light, and colour variations, which must arise from a combination of several distinct variability patterns. Attempts at modelling them are planned for a follow-up study. We place the time behaviour of V1294 Aql into context with variations known for some other systematically studied Be stars and discuss the current ideas about the nature of the Be phenomenon.

Light-time effect detected in fourteen eclipsing binaries

The available minima timings of 14 selected eclipsing binaries (V1297 Cas, HD 24105, KU Aur, GU CMa, GH Mon, AZ Vel, DI Lyn, DK Her, GQ Dra, V624 Her, V1134 Her, KIC 6187893, V1928 Aql, V2486 Cyg) were collected and analyzed. Using the automatic telescopes, surveys, and satellite data, we derived more than 2500 times of eclipses, accompanied with our own ground-based observations. These data were used to detect the period variations in these multiple systems. The eclipse timing variations were described using the third-body hypothesis and the light-time effect. Their respective periods were derived as 2.5, 16.2, 27, 20, 64, 5.6, 22, 115, 27, 42, 6.9, 11.2, 4.1, and 8.4 years for these systems, respectively. The predicted minimal mass of the third body was calculated for each of the systems, and we discuss here their prospective detectability. The light curves of HD 24105, GH Mon, DK Her, V1134 Her, KIC 6187893, V1928 Aql, and V2486 Cyg were analyzed using the PHOEBE program, resulting in physical parameters of the components. Significant fractions of the third light were detected during the light-curve analysis, supporting our hypothesis of the triple-star nature of all these systems. The majority of these systems (nine out of 14) were already known as visual doubles. Our study shifts them to possible quadruples, what makes them even more interesting.

V348 And and V572 Per: Bright Triple Systems with Eccentric Eclipsing Binaries

The eclipsing binaries are still important objects for our understanding of the universe. Especially these ones located within the more complex multiple systems can help us solving the problem of their origin and subsequent evolution of these higher order multiples. Photometry and spectroscopy spanning over more than 25 yr were used for the first complete analysis of the two bright triple systems, namely V348 And and V572 Per. The light curves in photometric filters were combined together with the radial velocities and analyzed simultaneously, yielding the precise physical parameters of the eclipsing components of these multiple systems. The system V348 And consists of two eclipsing components with its orbital period of about 27.7 days. The system is a very detached one, and both eclipses are rather narrow, lasting only about 0.016 of its period. The visual orbit of the wide pair has the period of about 87 yr. All three components of the system are probably of B8-9 spectral type, and the parallax of the system was slightly shifted to the value of 2.92 mas. On the other hand, the system V572 Per shows apsidal motion of its inner orbit, the orbital period being of about 1.2 days, while the apsidal motion of about 48 yr. The components are of A and F spectral types, while the motion with the third component around a common barycenter is only negligible. According to our modeling, this system is not a member of open cluster Alpha Persei.

V773 Cas, QS Aql, and BR Ind: Eclipsing Binaries as Parts of Multiple Systems

Eclipsing binaries remain crucial objects for our understanding of the universe. In particular, those that are components of multiple systems can help us solve the problem of the formation of these systems. Analysis of the radial velocities together with the light curve produced for the first time precise physical parameters of the components of the multiple systems V773 Cas, QS Aql, and BR Ind. Their visual orbits were also analyzed, which resulted in slightly improved orbital elements. What is typical for all these systems is that their most dominant source is the third distant component. The system V773 Cas consists of two similar G1-2V stars revolving in a circular orbit and a more distant component of the A3V type. Additionally, the improved value of parallax was calculated to be 17.6 mas. Analysis of QS Aql resulted in the following: the inner eclipsing pair is composed of B6V and F1V stars, and the third component is of about the B6 spectral type. The outer orbit has high eccentricity of about 0.95, and observations near its upcoming periastron passage between the years 2038 and 2040 are of high importance. Also, the parallax of the system was derived to be about 2.89 mas, moving the star much closer to the Sun than originally assumed. The system BR Ind was found to be a quadruple star consisting of two eclipsing K dwarfs orbiting each other with a period of 1.786 days; the distant component is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of about 6 days. Both pairs are moving around each other on their 148 year orbit.

The study of triple systems V819 Her, V2388 Oph, and V1031 Ori

The systems V819 Her, V2388 Oph, and V1031 Ori are triples comprised of an eclipsing binary orbiting with a distant visual component on a longer orbit. A detailed analysis of these interesting systems, combining the two observational techniques: interferometry and apparent period variation, was performed. The interferometric data for these three systems obtained during the last century determine the visual orbits of the distant components in the systems. The combined analysis of the positional measurements together with the analysis of apparent period changes of the eclipsing binary (using the minima timings) can be used to study these systems in a combined approach, resulting in a set of parameters otherwise unobtainable without the radial velocities. The main advantage of the technique presented here is the fact that one needs no spectroscopic monitoring of the visual orbits, which have rather long periods: 5.5 yr for V819 Her, 9.0 yr for V2388 Oph, and 31.3 yr for V1031 Ori, respectively. The eccentricities of the outer orbits are 0.69, 0.33, and 0.92, respectively. Moreover, the use of minima timings of the eclipsing pairs help us to derive the orientation of the orbit in space with no ambiguity around the celestial plane. And finally, the combined analysis yielded also an independent determination of the distance of V819 Her (68.7 +/- 1.8 pc), and V2388 Oph (70.6 +/- 8.9 pc). We also present a list of similar systems, which would be suitable for a combined analysis like this one.

Revised physical elements of the astrophysically important O9.5+O9.5V eclipsing binary system Y Cyg

Thanks to its long and rich observational history and rapid apsidal motion, the massive eclipsing binary Y Cyg represents one of the cornestones to critical tests of stellar evolution theory for massive stars. Yet, the determination of the basic physical properties is less accurate than it could be given the existing number of spectral and photometric observations. Our goal is to analyze all these data simultaneously with the new dedicated series of our own spectral and photometric observations from observatories widely separated in longitude. We obtained new series of UBV observations at three observatories separated in local time to obtain complete light curves of Y Cyg for its orbital period close to 3 days. This new photometry was reduced and carefully transformed to the standard UBV system using the HEC22 program. We also obtained new series of red spectra secured at two observatories and re-analyzed earlier obtained blue electronic spectra. Our analyses provide the most accurate so far published value of the apsidal period of 47.805 +/- 0.030 yrs and the following physical elements: M1=17.72+/-0.35$ Msun, M2=17.73+/-0.30 Msun, R1=5.785+/-0.091 Rsun, and R2=5.816+/-0.063 Rsun. The disentangling thus resulted in the masses, which are somewhat higher than all previous determinations and virtually the same for both stars, while the light curve implies a slighly higher radius and luminosity for star 2. The above empirical values imply the logarithm of the internal structure constant log k2 = -1.937. A comparison with Claret's stellar interior models implies an age close to 2 millions yrs for both stars. The claimed accuracy of modern element determination of 1-2 per cent seems still a bit too optimistic and obtaining new high-dispersion and high-resolution spectra is desirable.

Magnetotransport in graphene on silicon side of SiC

We have studied the transport properties of graphene grown on silicon side of SiC. Samples under study have been prepared by two different growth methods in two different laboratories. Magnetoresistance and Hall resistance have been measured at temperatures between 4 and 100 K in resistive magnet in magnetic fields up to 22 T. In spite of differences in sample preparation, the field dependence of resistances measured on both sets of samples exhibits two periods of magneto-oscillations indicating two different parallel conducting channels with different concentrations of carriers. The semi-quantitative agreement with the model calculation allows for conclusion that channels are formed by high-density and low-density Dirac carriers. The coexistence of two different groups of carriers on the silicon side of SiC was not reported before.

First detailed analysis of multiple system V2083 Cyg

Main aim of this paper is the first detailed analysis of multiple system V2083 Cyg and to reveal its basic physical properties. The system was studied by method of the light and radial velocity curves analysis, together with the interferometric data of the visual pair obtained during a last century. There was found that the close subsystem contains two very similar stars of spectral type A7-8. Moreover, the third body is orbiting around this pair with period of about 177 years. Due to the discrepancy of total mass as derived from two methods, there arises that the third body is maybe also a binary, or some object with lower luminosity but higher mass than normal main-sequence star. Another explanation is that the Hipparcos value of parallax is incorrect and the system is much closer to the Sun.

GK Boo and AE For: Two low-mass eclipsing binaries with dwarf companions

A study of late-type low-mass eclipsing binaries provides us with important information about the most common stars in the Universe. We obtain the first light curves and perform period analyses of two neglected eclipsing binaries GK Boo and AE For to reveal their basic physical properties. We performed both a period analysis of the times of the minima and a BVR light curve analysis. Many new times of minima for both the systems were derived and collected from the data obtained by automatic and robotic telescopes. This allowed us to study the long-term period changes in these systems for the first time. From the light curve analysis, we derived the first rough estimates of the physical properties of these systems. We find that the analyzed systems are somewhat similar to each other. Both contain low-mass components of similar types, both are close to the Sun, both have short orbital period, and both contain another low-mass companions on longer orbits of a few years. In the case of GK Boo, both components are probably of K3 spectral type, while the distant companion is probably a late M star. The light curve of GK Boo is asymmetric, which probably causes the shift in the secondary minima in the O-C diagram. System AE For comprises two K7 stars, and the third body is a possible brown dwarf with a minimal mass of only about 47 Jupiter Mass. We succeed in completing period and light curve analyses of both systems, although a more detailed spectroscopic analysis is needed to confirm the physical parameters of the components to a higher accuracy.

Photometric and spectroscopic investigation of TW Draconis

Context. TW Draconis is one of the best studied Algol-type eclipsing binaries. There is significant evidence for miscellaneous physical processes between interacting binary components manifesting themselves by period and light curve changes. Aims. Obtaining new set of photometric and spectroscopic observations, we analysed them together with the older spectroscopic and photometric data to build model of this eclipsing system with respect to observed changes of O-C diagram and light curve. Methods. Reduction of new spectra was carried out in the IRAF and SPEFO programs. Radial velocities were determined manually using SPEFO, by CCF using the Zverko's code and from the program KOREL. Orbital elements were derived with the FOTEL program and via disentangling with KOREL. The final combined solution was obtained with the programs PHOEBE and FOTEL. Results. Photometry shows small irregularities in light curves as a results of pulsating of one component and spot activity. Using net of KOREL outputs we found the mass ratio q=0.405(3).We confirm the presence of stellar matter around the primary. Even after subtraction of ADS 9706B influence, light curve solutions show third light in the system. Models in FOTEL and Phoebe are presented. Conclusions. TW Dra is an astrophysically very interesting eclipsing binary. Future combination of interferometry, spectroscopy, and photometry is promising. It could definitely confirm the hypothesis of quadruple system for TW Dra and explain behaviour of this system in complex.

Systematic study of Mn-doping trends in optical properties of (Ga,Mn)As

We report on a systematic study of optical properties of (Ga,Mn)As epilayers spanning the wide range of accessible substitutional Mn_Ga dopings. The growth and post-growth annealing procedures were optimized for each nominal Mn doping in order to obtain films which are as close as possible to uniform uncompensated (Ga,Mn)As mixed crystals. We observe a broad maximum in the mid-infrared absorption spectra whose position exhibits a prevailing blue-shift for increasing Mn-doping. In the visible range, a peak in the magnetic circular dichroism blue shifts with increasing Mn-doping. These observed trends confirm that disorder-broadened valence band states provide a better one-particle representation for the electronic structure of high-doped (Ga,Mn)As with metallic conduction than an energy spectrum assuming the Fermi level pinned in a narrow impurity band.

A catalog of visual double and multiple stars with eclipsing components

A new catalog of visual double systems containing eclipsing binaries as one component is presented. The main purpose of this catalog is to compile a complete list of all known multiples of this variety, both for current analysis and to highlight those in need of additional observations. All available photometric and astrometric data were analyzed, resulting in new orbits for eight systems and new times of minimum light for a number of the eclipsing binaries. Some of the systems in the catalog have acceptable solutions for their visual orbits, although in most cases their orbital periods are too long for simultaneous analysis. Also included, however, are a number of systems which currently lack an orbital solution but which may be suitable for simultaneous analysis in the future.

The BVRI Light Curves And Period Analysis Of The Beta Lyrae System XX Leonis

The contact eclipsing binary system XX Leonis (P = 0.97 days, sp A8) has been analysed using the PHOEBE programme, based on the Wilson Devinney code. The BVRI light curves were obtained during spring 2006 using the 20-cm telescope and ST-7 CCD detector. The effective temperature of the primary component determined from the photometric analysis is T=(7889+/-61)K, the inclination of the orbit is i=(89.98+/-2.45)deg and the photometric mass ratio q=(0.41+/-0.01). Also the third body hypothesis was suggested, based on the period analysis using 57 minimum times and resulting the period of the third body p3= (52.96+/-0.01)yr, amplitude A=(0.057+/-0.029)d and eccentricity e=(0.79+/-0.08) which gives the minimum mass m3,min=(3.6+/-0.8)M_sun.

Electron magnetotransport in GaAs/AlGaAs superlattices with weak and strong inter-well coupling

We report on magnetotransport measurements in two MBE-grown GaAs/AlGaAs superlattices formed by wide and narrow quantum wells and thin Si-doped barriers subject to tilted magnetic fields. It has been shown that illumination of the strongly coupled superlattice with narrow wells leads to reduction of its dimensionality from the 3D to 2D. The illumination-induced transition is revealed by remarkable change of magnetoresistance curves as compared to those measured before illumination. The experimental data along with tight-binding model calculations indicate that the illumination not only enhances the electron concentration but also suppresses the electron tunneling through the barriers.

Illumination-induced changes of the Fermi surface topology in three-dimensional superlattices

The magnetoresistance of the MBE-grown GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice with Si-doped barriers has been measured in tilted magnetic fields in the as-grown state, and after brief illumination by a red-light diode at low temperature, T is approximately 0.3 K. A remarkable illumination-induced modification of magnetoresistance curves has been observed, which indicates a significant change of the superlattice Fermi surface topology. Analysis of magnetoresistance data in terms of the tight-binding model reveals that not only electron concentration and mobility have been increased by illumination, but also the coupling among 2D electron layers in neighboring quantum wells has been reduced.

Magnetovolume effect in Ce(Ni{1-x}Cu{x})5 alloys

Magnetic susceptibility of the isostructural Ce(Ni{1-x}Cu{x})5 alloys (0< x <0.9) was studied as a function of the hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar at fixed temperatures 77.3 and 300 K, using a pendulum-type magnetometer. A pronounced magnitude of the pressure effect is found to be negative in sign and to depend strongly and non-monotonously on the Cu content, showing a sharp maximum in vicinity of x = 0.4. The experimental results are discussed in terms of the Ce valence change under pressure. It has been concluded that the fractional occupation of the f-states, which corresponds to the half-integer valence of Ce ion (3.5), is favorable for the valence instability in alloys studied. For the reference CeNi5 compound the main contributions to magnetic susceptibility and their volume dependence are calculated ab initio within the local spin density approximation (LSDA), and appeared to be in close agreement with experimental data.

Magnetoresistance oscillations in GaAs/AlGaAs superlattices subject to in-plane magnetic fields

The MBE-grown GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice with Si-doped barriers has been used to study a 3D-2D transition under the influence of the in-plane component of applied magnetic field. The longitudinal magnetoresistance data measured in tilted magnetic fields have been interpreted in terms of a simple tight-binding model. The data provide values of basic parameters of the model and make it possible to reconstruct the superlattice Fermi surface and to calculate the density of states for the lowest Landau subbands. Positions of van Hove singularities in the DOS agree excellently with magnetoresistance oscillations, confirming that the model describes adequately the magnetoresistance of strongly coupled semiconductor superlattices.

Interplay between mesoscopic phase separation and bulk magnetism in the layered NaxCoO2

Specific heat of the layered NaxCoO2 (x=0.65, 0.70 and 0.75) oxides has been measured in the temperature range of 3-360 K and magnetic field of 0 and 9 T. The analysis of data, assuming the combined effect of inter-layer superexchange and the phase separation into mesoscopic magnetic domains with localized spins embedded in a matrix with itinerant electronic character, suggests that the dominant contribution to the specific heat in the region of short-range ordering is mediated by quasi-2D antiferromagnetic clusters, perpendicular to the CoO2 layers.
