Inferring physical parameters of compact stars from their f-mode gravitational wave signals

We propose here a robust scheme to infer the physical parameters of compact stars from their f-mode gravitational wave signals. We first show that the frequency and the damping rate of f-mode oscillation of compact stars can be expressed in terms of universal functions of stellar mass and moment of inertia. By employing the universality in the f-mode one can then infer accurate values of the mass, the moment of inertia and the radius of a compact star. In addition, we demonstrate that our new scheme works well for both realistic neutron stars and quark stars, and hence provides a unifying way to infer the physical parameters of compact stars.

Universality in oscillation modes of superfluid neutron stars?

It has been well established that the $f$-mode of relativistic ordinary-fluid neutron stars displays a universal scaling behavior. Here we study whether the "ordinary" $f_{\rm o}$- and "superfluid" $f_{\rm s}$-modes of superfluid neutron stars also show similar universal behavior. We first consider a simple case where the neutron superfluid and normal fluid are decoupled, and with each fluid modeled by a polytropic equation of state. We find that the $f_{\rm o}$-mode obeys the same scaling laws as established for the $f$-mode of orindary-fluid stars. However, the oscillation frequency of the $f_{\rm s}$-mode obeys a different scaling law, which can be derived analytically from a homogenous two-fluid stellar model in Newtonian gravity. Next the coupling effect between the two fluids is studied via a parameterized model of entrainment. We find that the coupling in general breaks the universal behavior seen in the case of decoupled fluids. Based on a relativistic variational principle, an approximated expression is derived for the first-order shift of the $f_{\rm s}$-mode squared frequency due to the entrainment.

Efficiency of feedback process in cavity quantum electrodynamics

Utilizing the continuous frequency mode quantization scheme, we study from first principle the efficiency of a feedback scheme that can generate maximally entangled states of two atoms in an optical cavity through their interactions with a single input photon. The spectral function of the photon emitted from the cavity, which will be used as the input of the next round in the feedback process, is obtained analytically. We find that the spectral function of the photon is modified in each round and deviates from the original one. The efficiency of the feedback scheme consequently deteriorates gradually after several rounds of operation.

Generalised Inverse-Cowling Approximation for Polar $w$-mode Oscillations of Neutron Stars

Adopting the Lindblom-Detweiler formalism for polar oscillations of neutron stars, we study the $w$-mode oscillation and find that the Lagrangian change in pressure, measured by the physical quantity $X$, is negligibly small. Based on this observation, we develop the generalised inverse-Cowling approximation (GICA) with the approximation $X=X'=0$, where $X'$ is the derivative of $X$ with respect to the circumferential radius, for $w$-mode oscillations of neutron stars. Under GICA, $w$-mode oscillations are described by a second-order differential system, which can yield accurate frequencies and damping rates of quasi-normal modes.

Determination of the internal structure of neutron stars from gravitational wave spectra

In this paper the internal structure of a neutron star is shown to be inferrable from its gravitational-wave spectrum. Iteratively applying the inverse scheme of the scaled coordinate logarithmic perturbation method for neutron stars proposed by Tsui and Leung [Astrophys. J. {\bf 631}, 495 (2005)], we are able to determine the mass, the radius and the mass distribution of a star from its quasi-normal mode frequencies of stellar pulsation. In addition, accurate equation of state of nuclear matter can be obtained from such inversion scheme. Explicit formulas for the case of axial $w$-mode oscillation are derived here and numerical results for neutron stars characterized by different equations of state are shown.

Theory of Light Emission in Sonoluminescence as Thermal Radiation

Based on the model proposed by Hilgenfeldt {\it at al.} [Nature {\bf 398}, 401 (1999)], we present here a comprehensive theory of thermal radiation in single-bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL). We first invoke the generalized Kirchhoff's law to obtain the thermal emissivity from the absorption cross-section of a multilayered sphere (MLS). A sonoluminescing bubble, whose internal structure is determined from hydrodynamic simulations, is then modelled as a MLS and in turn the thermal radiation is evaluated. Numerical results obtained from simulations for argon bubbles show that our theory successfully captures the major features observed in SBSL experiments.

Probing the interior of neutron stars with gravitational waves

We show here how the internal structure of a neutron star can be inferred from its gravitational wave spectrum. Under the premise that the frequencies and damping rates of a few $w$-mode oscillations are found, we apply an inversion scheme to determine its mass, radius and density distribution. In addition, accurate equation of state of nuclear matter can also be determined.

Perturbative Analysis of Universality and Individuality in Gravitational Waves from Neutron Stars

The universality observed in gravitational wave spectra of non-rotating neutron stars is analyzed here. We show that the universality in the axial oscillation mode can be reproduced with a simple stellar model, namely the centrifugal barrier approximation (CBA), which captures the essence of the Tolman VII model of compact stars. Through the establishment of scaled co-ordinate logarithmic perturbation theory (SCLPT), we are able to explain and quantitatively predict such universal behavior. In addition, quasi-normal modes of individual neutron stars characterized by different equations of state can be obtained from those of CBA with SCLPT.

Universality in Quasi-normal Modes of Neutron Stars

We study the universality in gravitational waves emitted from non-rotating neutron stars characterized by different equations of state (EOS). We find that the quasi-normal mode frequencies of such waves, including the $w$-modes and the $f$-mode, display similar universal scaling behaviours that hold for most EOS. Such behaviours are shown to stem from the mathematical structure of the axial and the polar gravitational wave equations, and the fact that the mass distribution function can be approximated by a cubic-quintic polynomial in radius. As a benchmark for other realistic neutron stars, a simple model of neutron stars is adopted here to reproduce the pulsation frequencies and the generic scaling behaviours mentioned above with good accuracy.

Two-mode entanglement in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the generation of two-mode entanglement in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential. By applying the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, we show that the problem is exactly solvable as long as the number of excitations due to atom-atom interactions remains low. In particular, the condensate constitutes a symmetric Gaussian system, thereby enabling its entanglement of formation to be measured directly by the fluctuations in the quadratures of the two constituent components [Giedke {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 107901 (2003)]. We discover that significant two-mode squeezing occurs in the condensate if the interspecies interaction is sufficiently strong, which leads to strong entanglement between the two components.

Spontaneous emission of homogeneous broadening molecules on a micro-droplet's surface and local-field correction

We consider the spontaneous emission of a broadening molecule on the surface of a micro-sphere in this paper. The density of states for the micro-cavity is derived from quasi-normal models(QNM's) expansion of the correlation functions of electromagnetic fields. Through detailed analysis we show that only weak coupling between a broadening atom(molecule) and the electromagnetic fields exists in a dielectric sphere cavity whether the sphere is small or big. From these results we find the explicit expression of the spontaneous emission decay rate for a surfactant broadening molecule on the surface of a micro-droplet with radius $a$, in which only $1/a$ and $1/a^{2}$ components exhibit. Then we apply this expression to a real experiment and obtain a consistent result with the experiment. We also show that the real-cavity model of local field correction is accurate, and reveal that the local-field correction factor can be measured precisely and easily by fluorescence experiments of surfactant molecules. Moreover, the spontaneous decay of a surfactant molecular on droplet's surface is sensitive to the atomic broadening, so that the fluorescence experiment in a micro-sphere cavity can be used to estimate the radiative broadening.

Swapping and entangling qubits of single photons and atoms

A scheme is proposed here to achieve swapping and entangling of photonic and atomic qubits with high fidelity. The mechanism is based on the scattering of a single photon from a $Λ$-type three-level atom. The evolution of the coupled system is analyzed by projecting the quantum state onto a `bright' and a `dark' state. Quantum interference of these two states, which is determined by a frequency-dependent phase angle, can be exploited to perform various two-qubit transformations. It is remarkable that the probability of success of such transformations can approach unity in the strong coupling cavity QED regime.

Generation of entangled states of two atoms inside a leaky cavity

An in-depth theoretical study is carried out to examine the quasi-deterministic entanglement of two atoms inside a leaky cavity. Two $Λ$-type three-level atoms, initially in their ground states, may become maximally entangled through the interaction with a single photon. By working out an exact analytic solution, we show that the probability of success depends crucially on the spectral function of the injected photon. With a cavity photon, one can generate a maximally entangled state with a certain probability that is always less than 50%. However, for an injected photon with a narrower spectral width, this probability can be significantly increased. In particular, we discover situations in which entanglement can be achieved in a single trial with an almost unit probability.

Linearized Perturbations of a Black Hole: Continuum Spectrum

Linearized perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole are described, for each angular momentum $\ell$, by the well-studied discrete quasinormal modes (QNMs), and in addition a continuum. The latter is characterized by a cut strength $q(γ>0)$ for frequencies $ω= -iγ$. We show that: (a) $q(γ\downarrow0) \propto γ$, (b) $q(Γ) = 0$ at $Γ= (\ell+2)!/[6(\ell-2)!]$, and (c) $q(γ)$ oscillates with period $\sim 1$ ($2M\equiv1$). For $\ell=2$, a pair of QNMs are found beyond the cut on the unphysical sheet very close to $Γ$, leading to a large dipole in the Green's function_near_ $Γ$. For a source near the horizon and a distant observer, the continuum contribution relative to that of the QNMs is small.

Unconventional Gravitational Excitation of a Schwarzschild Black Hole

Besides the well-known quasinormal modes, the gravitational spectrum of a Schwarzschild black hole also has a continuum part on the negative imaginary frequency axis. The latter is studied numerically for quadrupole waves. The results show unexpected striking behavior near the algebraically special frequency $Ω=-4i$. This reveals a pair of unconventional damped modes very near $Ω$, confirmed analytically.

Effect of collision dephasing on atomic evolutions in a high-Q cavity

The decoherence mechanism of a single atom inside a high-Q cavity is studied, and the results are compared with experimental observations performed by M. Brune et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1800 (1996)]. Collision dephasing and cavity leakage are considered as the major sources giving rise to decoherence effect. In particular, we show that the experimental data can be fitted very well by assuming suitable values of collision Stark shifts and dark count rate in the detector.

Entangled quantum tunneling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We examine the quantum tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species trapped in a double well configuration. We discover the condition under which particles of different species can tunnel as pairs through the potential barrier between two wells in opposition directions. This novel form of tunneling is due to the interspecies interaction that eliminates the self- trapping effect. The correlated motion of tunneling atoms leads to the generation of quantum entanglement between two macroscopically coherent systems.

Dynamic depletion in a Bose condensate via a sudden increase of the scattering length

We examine the time-dependent quantum depletion of a trapped Bose condensate arising from a rapid increase of the scattering length. Our solution indicates that a significant buildup of incoherent atoms can occur within a characteristic time short compared with the harmonic trap period. We discuss how the depletion density and the characteristic time depend on the physical parameters of the condensate.
