Steps towards determination of the size and structure of the Broad-Line Region in Active Galactic Nuclei. XIII. Ultraviolet observations of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy 3C 390.3

As part of an extensive multi-wavelength monitoring campaign, the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to observe the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 during the period 1994 December 31 to 1996 March 5. Spectra were obtained every 6-10 days. The UV continuum varied by a factor of 7 through the campaign, while the broad emission-lines varied by factors of 2-5. Unlike previously monitored Seyfert 1 galaxies, in which the X-ray continuum generally varies with a larger amplitude than the UV, in 3C 390.3 the UV continuum light-curve is similar in both amplitude and shape to the X-ray light-curve observed by ROSAT. The UV broad emission-line variability lags that of the UV continuum by 35-70 days for Ly-alpha and CIV 1549; values larger than those found for Seyfert 1 galaxies of comparable UV luminosity. These lags are also larger than those found for the Balmer lines in 3C 390.3 over the same period. The red and blue wings of CIV and Ly-alpha vary in phase, suggesting that radial motion does not dominate the kinematics of the UV line-emitting gas. Comparison with archival data provides evidence for velocity-dependent changes in the Ly-alpha and CIV line profiles, indicating evolution in the detailed properties and/or distribution of the broad-line emitting gas.

BeppoSAX observations of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 3516

We present the results of two observations of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, obtained with BeppoSAX in 1996 November and 1997 March. Useful signal is detected between 0.2 and 60 keV, allowing for the first time the simultaneous observation of all main spectral features. The source was brighter by a factor 2 at the second epoch of observation. Both spectra present a strong Fe Kalpha line, and a reflection hump at high energy. An absorption edge at 0.8 keV is visible in the later spectrum, but not in the earlier one, indicating that this feature is strongly variable.

Modelling the ENLR in NGC1068

We present photoionization models of the high excitation gas in the Extended Narrow Line Region (ENLR) of NGC1068. The ENLR line fluxes have been calculated allowing for attenuation of the central-source ionizing continuum as a function of distance from the centre. Diffuse continuum emission from low density ENLR gas is included as an important secondary source of ionization. The observed high excitation emission further than 25 arcsec from the centre of NGC1068 can be fitted by photoionization models using a central-source luminosity of 3.6x10^44 erg/s between 10^14.6 and 10^18.4 Hz, with the continuum shape attenuated by nuclear gas with an integrated column density of N_h=10^22 cm^-2. The reflected soft X-ray continuum from the attenuating gas could be responsible for about 10% of the observed, resolved circumnuclear soft X-ray continuum extending out to 15 arcsec from the centre (Wilson et al 1992).

The extended narrow line region in Mkn79. I.Observations

We present deep long slit spectra of Mkn79 in position angles PA=12$^{o}$ and PA=50$^{o}$ obtained with the WHT. These data prove the existence of an extended narrow line region in PA=12$^{o}$, which coincides with the triplet radio structure (Ulvestad \& Wilson 1984) and the observed outflow of material from the nucleus at PA=10$^{o}$ (Whittle et al. 1988). The ratios of the high to low ionization lines indicate a higher level of gas excitation in PA=12$^{o}$ compared to PA=50$^{o}$. The [NII]$λ$6583/H$α$ and [SII]$λ$6717,31/H$α$ versus [OIII]$λ$5007/H$β$ line ratios are consistent with excitation by an AGN continuum rather than a HII region.
